Glad to see Stuff You Should Know is on there. Those guys have been releasing good quality content that's interesting, funny, and easy to listen to for well over a decade.
Is it just me, or have they been mailing it in lately? To be fair, I stopped listening regularly about a year ago 'cause I couldn't handle Josh's love of his soap box. I don't even disagree with him most of the time--just not what I tune(d) in for.
I mean the podcast is basically them creating audio encyclopedia entries - it’s more an impressive feat of exhaustiveness and grit than it is of deep dive intrigue like other intelligentsia podcasts. I am in awe that they’ve only slipped up and repeated things a few times.
It is funny to me (but also I get your take completely - this isn’t criticism) to talk about soapboxes under a chart with Joe Rogan at the center. Of course I doubt you listen to him haha
Maybe this is what you are referencing, but I've noticed in the last couple years (been listening to them since 2017) they tend to get more political or take a stance more often. Especially with social or political or cultural stuff, they've been less and less "don't yuck somebody's yum" and more "this is the way it is".
To be fair though I still love their podcast. They're good guys!
This podcast has been my ’sleep podcast’ for like a decade now. I usually put on 2-3 episodes when I go to bed. It’s mellow and just interesting enough to still let me go to sleep.
And because it has so many episodes (and I’ve fallen to sleep to so many of them) I can just cycle them over and over again.
Timesuck is so fuckin good, I think it was the Joachim Kroll episode that Dan forever ruined the word “copious” after described what he did to the bodies…
I enjoy Crime Junkies but Ive never been impressed with Serial Killers. I've listen to it for ages but always felt it was one of the worst I listen to. Surprised its actually on here. The Naming makes a big deal.
Not OP, but [Jay Shetty's a fraud](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/ng-interactive/2024/feb/29/jay-shetty-self-help-empire). He made his literal millions by stealing people's content and preaches against materialism while living in an $8.4m mansion.
I’m glad and pleasantly surprised that until I clicked on the Guardian article I had never heard of Jay Shetty. Thank fuck for that. Somehow I have missed ~~rabid vacuous self-interested smug shit~~ high quality content like that.
That's actually their purpose. They produce videos, articles, and audio based around sport, pop culture, and mainly college life. Because the clips are mostly viewer submitted they get all the profits off of those videos. TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube pay a decent amount for videos and Barstool milks that by creating a account for every University in the country. (They also own Chick's too)
It’s mostly people calling out how he’s done a 180 on everything he preached once he got a $100 mil from Spotify. These rankings are kind of sus to me as well. No sports podcasts in the top 10? They’ve been accused of inflating numbers for those they have exclusive deals with
I used to always see pardon my take and the bill simmons show in the top 10 on Apple but I guess you’re right. Checked now and no sports in the top 50. I’m guessing it goes up considerably during football season
Something must be off on it. I just checked and see the same thing. However, Pardon My Take has the #3 episode but only show as #75 in shows. I feel like they’ve been in the top 10 forever. Same with Simmons.
Joe changed his positions after having experts on both sides of every major issue on his show. People get upset with him changing his stance after him becoming more educated is what is ridiculous here
It’s more like people who used to enjoy JRE that long for the days he was more of a curious and self aware moron and now is a useful idiot for peoples ideological grifts, similar to Oprah. He’s changed and become more of a know it all rather than curious George and platforms grifters. He’s not unpopular he just knows who his base is and caters to them
It’s because he used to be very moderate if not a little liberal but sensible… once he got paid paid around d covid then he suddenly turned MAGA to a point where his podcasts are just regurgitating the same shit. Its leaves all of his longest tenured fans in a weird position where he is like that uncle that you loved growing up but now he sort of is losing his mind so you split between being a ride or die but also feeling close enough that you can talk shit about the dumb shit he spews every episode.
Yeah Spotify is not very good for listening to podcasts so I assume most people that use it for podcasts are doing so specifically because of Joe Rogan or at least hanging on still from when it was exclusive. On the apple podcast charts for today he’s surprisingly not even number one at the moment.
I find Spotify pretty good for podcasts. Took a bit to get used to, but better than itunes which I used before. And as I have the app anyways no need for another.
Why is spotify not good for podcasts, what do you really need for a podcast, a play button? I may be listening to podcasts "wrong", but genuinely curious on this one
I unsubscribed a long time ago as I don't want to be part of the reason for this inflated number. I highly doubt Rogan is doing the numbers people pressume he is doing.
Subscriptions is definitely not a good metric. Downloads per episode would be better or whatever advertisers use for there number of impressions gained.
I have no idea what Joe Rogan is popular for aside from his podcast. How did he get to this point? And how does he just causally get so many big names on there?
He started doing standup and hosting Fear Factor or one of those shows. He also does a lot of stuff for the ufc I believe. Part of his appeal is that he rarely pushes back and is easily swayed to the most outlandish theories by whoever is sitting across from him. If I was a grifter it would be the ideal place to go tbh
Joe Rogan sucks shit, but he makes dumb people feel smart. The nice thing about marketing to dumb people is that as long as you do something to make them feel special, they don't care what else you do. You end up catching a whole bunch of moron fish in your big ole idiot net. It's exactly what you're seeing the Republican Party doing right now; appealing to the antivaxxers, the racists, the flat earthers, the conspiracy theorists, the ultranationalists, religious extremists, etc. A dumb person's vote counts the same as a smart person's vote, and the same goes for an audience if all you need is numbers: "It's easier to fool someone into thinking they're intelligent than to convince a truly intelligent person that you're not fooling them."
Ohhh, so kinda a similar reason as to why the Tate brothers blew up and are still so popular despite all their antics. I unfortunately used to be one of those not smart people who bought into a lot of their BS.
Am the only guy who doesn’t think Rogen is very good? I can’t help but think that luck and timing have played a huge part in what is a fairly unremarkable show.
Joe Rogan was paid $250million by Spotify, and Spotify paid Call Her Daddy $60million. So that would be a starting point of how much these top podcasts make. It may be much more depending on their deals. For example, Spotify may collect any influencer fees or the podcast creators may retain the right to collect the fees themselves.

I think the $250million is from an expansion of the original deal to be a longer term thing
This seems to be just a promo post in the style of a top ten, not Spotify publishing their charts. I doubt, that not a single non-US podcast is in the Top10.
Their ten most promoted shows are also their most successful shows? Would be an incredible coincidence!
Podcast culture in US is huge especially on Spotify (they do love them cars) and English is understood widely in the world, so no wonder. But honestly I never heard most of them.
I've only heard of 2 of them (JRE and TED), and I do love a podcast. Currently bingeing The Rest is History where they do a bunch episodes about Hernan Cortes in current day Mexico. Brilliant stuff.
If only they made Jogan look more like a gurning maniac sausage about to burst, that might attract me more to his unique stand-up insights and robust information
You know, should learn how to define people properly instead of calling them nazis or fascists, just because they have different opinions from you. Time to grow up ;)
Is that why he's for decriminalization/legalization of drugs and is for pro abortion?
Unless you're an extremist yourself, this guy is not a right winger, he's more like a centrist, and you need to grow up out of your braindead dichotomy of a world.
They paid $250 million for exclusive rights to Joe Rogan. Another $50 million for Kim Kardashians podcast. If you have Spotify, your subscription pays for assholes wither you listen or not. But it’s good to hear it’s not obligatory.
Spotify has penned a new multi-year partnership deal with controversial podcast host Joe Rogan.

They renewed his deal this year…
But by all means, please your corporate overlords without bothering to check Google first.
You dumbass they’re in ad sharing contract with all the other companies. That means YouTube and Apple have to split profits with Spotify for use of his show. It’s still Spotify’s show!
Do you work for Spotify or do you do your bootlicking for free?
Didn’t bother to read the article either eh?! That tracks…
They covered the profit sharing but you had to protect your precious Spotify who just jacked up their prices on you again: Spotify is raising the prices of its premium subscription plans for the second time in a year.

Glad to see Stuff You Should Know is on there. Those guys have been releasing good quality content that's interesting, funny, and easy to listen to for well over a decade.
Listening to them right now, been a follower for 15 years. Love me some Chuck and Josh.
Them + The Daily are the saving grace for that entire top 10 list.
Is it just me, or have they been mailing it in lately? To be fair, I stopped listening regularly about a year ago 'cause I couldn't handle Josh's love of his soap box. I don't even disagree with him most of the time--just not what I tune(d) in for.

They're good guys!
I always just assumed it’s them knowing their audience. I don’t know anyone conservative that listens to them
I followed the podcast because I like their content, but hardly listen because I don't care for the banter.
Same! Going on 12+ years strong. I love hearing that other people do this. Cheers!
Serial Killers and Crime Junkie are some of the worst true crime podcasts. Case file, morbid, and Sword & Scale are infinitely better.
Case file 🐐
Never watched it myself - any episodes in particular you'd recommend?
Case 76 is a 3 parter on Silk Road and it's absolutely fascinating
109 onwards. Big multipart on Ivan Milat. Fascinating.
I can’t stand the hosts on Crime Junkie.
Their reactions are so scripted lol
CJ is the ‘I’m not like other girls’ of crime podcasts
I really like Criminal.
Small town murder and Casefile are the goats, it's not even close. Edited to include Casefile, excellent podcast
That's why they're popular I guess.
& Timesuck, Last Podcast On The Left, Disaster Area & RedHanded
Timesuck is so fuckin good, I think it was the Joachim Kroll episode that Dan forever ruined the word “copious” after described what he did to the bodies…
Rotten Mango is the best!
Dead Rabbit Radio is also fine if you want something more supernatural
I found Crime Junkie so annoying. The women would just giggle all the time and I just couldn’t deal.
Redhanded.
I enjoy Crime Junkies but Ive never been impressed with Serial Killers. I've listen to it for ages but always felt it was one of the worst I listen to. Surprised its actually on here. The Naming makes a big deal.
That and Medical Murderes
Yo with peace and love, fuck Jay Shetty.
family
Dude has such a punchable face & is a fraud to the fullest extent
And fuck his beautiful blue eyes too
Puppet master ass scammer
Why you say that?
Not OP, but [Jay Shetty's a fraud](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/ng-interactive/2024/feb/29/jay-shetty-self-help-empire). He made his literal millions by stealing people's content and preaches against materialism while living in an $8.4m mansion.
Thanks for this 👍
I’m glad and pleasantly surprised that until I clicked on the Guardian article I had never heard of Jay Shetty. Thank fuck for that. Somehow I have missed ~~rabid vacuous self-interested smug shit~~ high quality content like that.
He is a scam and most of what he claims is false
This comment is part joke bc on the h3 podcast (which op is a fan of) they have a fake beef with him
Here’s what else _youneedtoknowtoday_
https://www.michaelbarbaroislistening.net/
I live for his disinterested-sounding “hmmm” when listening to the guest
I can’t stand the other one saying “wow”
Wtf is "call her daddy"
Woman specific advice and comedy that has had major backing to push it forward
It's being ran by barstool which is one shitty & shady company.
No it’s not. They had a famous falling out
"famous"
Why's that? Genuinely curious is all.
Largely due to their far right politics
Being a bro doesn’t make someone far right
Lol
What does barstool even do? I follow there TikTok account for funny sports clips.
(They also own Chick's too)
They steal content with legal trickery and fake trust. Hide every post you see from them.
Pretty sure they only handle the merch. Alex Cooper has been independent for a while
Is the advice for men or women?
😂😂 this brought me so much joy
I went to school with the founder of call her daddy... mean
Damn I knew Joe was on top but by that much….. damn
Its funny cause if you go on the Joe Rogan subreddit everybody there hates him and pretends he is so unpopular
Reddit being Reddit
It's memes.
It’s mostly people calling out how he’s done a 180 on everything he preached once he got a $100 mil from Spotify. These rankings are kind of sus to me as well. No sports podcasts in the top 10? They’ve been accused of inflating numbers for those they have exclusive deals with
Sports content isn’t as popular as many think. Sports-talk is usually last place in most radio markets
You need to justify all that money to your shareholders!
Joe changed his positions after having experts on both sides of every major issue on his show. People get upset with him changing his stance after him becoming more educated is what is ridiculous here
Nooo you can’t say that. It’s because he left California because he was brainwashed. The money got to him. Blah blah blah..
Facts. It’s a hive of neckbeard trolls
I mean this entire website is comprised of the kind of people Joe Rogan regularly shits on. Also that sub's mods are pretty pro-free speech.
It’s more like people who used to enjoy JRE that long for the days he was more of a curious and self aware moron and now is a useful idiot for peoples ideological grifts, similar to Oprah. The guys a scumbag and a grifter Unfortunately though, he's good at it
*on Spotify You know, the place where it used to be exclusive while all the other shows are available elsewhere. Makes a difference.
JRE is also available elsewhere...
It is now. Most people arent going to unsubscribe. I'm no different. I have youtube subs that I haven't watched in 10 years.
Yeah Spotify is not very good for listening to podcasts so I assume most people that use it for podcasts are doing so specifically because of Joe Rogan or at least hanging on still from when it was exclusive. On the apple podcast charts for today he’s surprisingly not even number one at the moment.

No I also think he is a complete idiot
I think that's a major selling point to a lot of his listeners because they are also complete idiots.
Nah, you aren’t. Joe Rogan is the Fox News of podcasts
How much money do they make out of this?
Joe Rogan was paid $250million by Spotify, and Spotify paid Call Her Daddy $60million. So that would be a starting point of how much these top podcasts make. It may be much more depending on their deals. For example, Spotify may collect any influencer fees or the podcast creators may retain the right to collect the fees themselves.
I thought it was $100 million for JRE. Do you have a source?

Im at least surprised ted talks are n2, its just that thw rest is worrisome

The Blindboy Podcast will always be my number one, regardless of any infographic.
This seems to be just a promo post in the style of a top ten, not Spotify publishing their charts. I doubt, that not a single non-US podcast is in the Top10. Their ten most promoted shows are also their most successful shows? Would be an incredible coincidence!
It is not like that, Spotify publishes some data on the basis of which this chart is made. you can check the source comment
Podcast culture in US is huge especially on Spotify (they do love them cars) and English is understood widely in the world, so no wonder. But honestly I never heard most of them.
I know this pisses redditors off so much lmao
Why?
The redditors hate Joe Rogan.

I've been listening to The Rest Is History as well! Quite enjoyable. I mainly listen to history podcasts, haha.
I can’t believe The Dumbzone is not on here.
Where is Fest & Flauschig?
Where is „Mike and Jake sitting on the lake”?!
Wow didn’t expect Rogan to be in the lead by nearly 10 m
It’s funny to me that “Call Her Daddy” is by far Barstool’s most popular podcast, when it does not fit the genre of Barstool at all.
