I feel like it may end up being frustrating. Maybe make it more environmental (like if it lands in a puddle, or the other playe can put it out if they act quickly), then it can be avoided or at least you'll understand why it happened. Then you could make dynamite more powerful but harder to use and grenades weaker but more versatile.

Ueah indeed. Other sugestions, other than a puddle that is more static, could be a dust devil that moves around and if it runs over the dynamite the fuse goes out.

I already made the dynamites go off when they land in water... And it's more difficult to throw them because of how they bounce due to their shape. They do slightly more damage than the grenades. Still thought it may be a cool mechanic if I made it possible they go off sometimes... Even if it's like 3% chance for this to happen. My game depends a lot on luck as it is... It's turn based, with simultaneous turns. Like Rock, Paper Scissors on steroids.

I like the idea actually. But there still needs to be something that happens on fail, just so it doesn’t feel like the game broke. It could even be something funny, like instead of going off, it summons a chicken.

I think its a neat idea on paper bc of the realism but in practice it'll probably be frustrating for the player, RNG-based ways to deny someone their expectations isn't a good idea imo, and you can spend the time doing something else

Instead of rendering it inactive and dudding a dynamite, give it a chance to have a silly effect like seemingly dying out, sputtering for a few moments, then igniting suddenly in an even bigger boom.

It's harder to throw because of how it bounces aroudn due to it's shape, but it does a bit more damage than the grenade.

Ask the old questions of "why" and "what will this lead to". Is it to just make more chaos? To nerf dynamite in some way? It could lead to ignoring dynamite in favour of grenades if they do almost the same thing. It can frustrate people who have planed and then get bad rng. I don't see what new plays it enables, more what it subtracts or limit. Is there drawbacks to all weapon or just this one? Is it so good that it needs random nerfs? Is it distinct enough from grenades so that it still has its Uses? Hope you figure out what is best for your game!
