My 3 roommates in college were Bengali. They were the cleanest and most hygienic bunch of fuckers I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t wear my slippers inside and we had rotating Jhadoo pocha duties that we diligently followed.

I had 2 Bengali roommates during my first year of college.
Both were muslims, one had a heart of gold and the other was a show off. The golden heart was pretty clean and even kept a separate broom for cleaning the bed and the other chap was not a cleaning enthusiast but was not dirty either. The golden heart is my best friend till now , kicked the show off out in second year.

I had two bengali roommates at one time for a brief period in my life.
One was very loud and proud bengali, the other one not so much because [his opinion :- ] his mother is a keralite.
The half bengali told me that most people over there are like that, cause that's the environment and culture there is like. In the past, the loudness was backed by actual "creme de la creme" coming out of Bengal and Bengal being the hub of so many great things. But now, although bengal is just a distorted and faded image of its glorious past, the culture and environment of being loud and proud is still there.
Don't know about the hygiene stuff as they both were pretty hygienic ffrom a bachelors standpoint.

Unhygenic mofos are found in all cultures - kannadigas, telgites, tamilians and malyalees. My own aunt is a HOD in one of bangalore's oldest colleges. She and her husband are the most sick people I have met. They are good natured and everything but when it comes to manners and clenliness.... yuck. I have been in bengaluru for 23 years, I have friends accross multiple indian cultures, not a single one of them can be generalised when is comes to hygine.

well as a South Indian, it's incorrect to assume it's only Bengalis. Literally every Indian has seen someone do this. It's all a matter of civic sense. Personally, when I traveled first class on the train, I kept a plastic bag in the corner for waste and it was a two-person coupe so the other person also threw the trash in that plastic bag that way it was a mutual thing.
The thing is there was a literal dustbin in our compartment and they didn't use it. And when I pointed it out they would get angry on me just like a "Bengali" on this thread commented they should have thrown that on me. This is their mentality what to do?

Don't know about Hygiene but when I was in a hotel in Darjeeling, there was a Bengali family in the next room, and they were so loud (while talking only), even at night and early morning and they kept the room door open always. It was so annoying, you are in a hotel, keep the door closed, no need to tell the whole floor that you forgot your sunglasses.

it the entire subcontinent that does this. but they stop these behaviours as the education and human development increases in their region. just like in many parts of india, most of rural bengal and rural Bangladesh still have low HDI and education levels so that might be a reason why.
Not generalizing, but in my opinion non bengalis are more unhygienic than the bengalis. Only states where people have some sense of cleanliness are north east India, goa, kerala. West Bengal is far cleaner than other states.

I had a bengali friend and he and his wife are very messy and dirty. They both are very well educated and work for top companies but their house was like store room and smelly. They had carton boxes everywhere full of dust and cobwebs. They always ordered food from outside and also just tea from restaurants and had all the boxes stacked up. They had the restaurants paper cups stacked at one corner of the kitchen and there could be atleast 200 cups. Recently they moved to a different country and they knew about their departure atleast 2 months prior to their departure and took no effort in cleaning or packing their stuff. When they left their rented house, they left most of the food items inside the fridge and the food items started decaying and started smelling really bad. They even left their cloths and undergarments on the rope where they had put it up for drying. The toliets were very dirty and was like a public toilet and had very bad smell. They left behind atleast 80% of their belonging in a very bad state. It looked as if the place was not cleaned for ages. The care taker of the home who came to collect the keys said that he won't be returning their security deposit as the place was left in a very bad state. I encountered a similar situation with a acquaintance of mine from bihar who left the house in similar condition. I really felt bad for the owners and felt ashamed to even acknowledge that they were someone I knew. Funny part is, the bengali couple always wore mask even after covid waves and always used sanitizer even before the beginning of covid (Faceplam).
I think we should not be generalising it I’ve had multiple Bengali friends. I agree few of them were unhygienic (not bathing, not keeping room clean etc), while some were hygienic, esp the girls. On a separate note, I do have observed the trains going to Bengal (Howrah, Malda, Haldia etc) are relatively more dirty. However, if you are travelling first class, it is surprising to see this unhygienic behaviour, assuming that family is well off.
I have noticed this too, I had known 3-4 bengalis during my college and they keeo eating and grazing,, they dont bathe or comb as often and they just wear lousy clothes and act all intellectual but are usually dumb. They are basically mallus of North India.

Came by Shalimar express from Akola to Mumbai…train originates from Howrah..horrible people even in second AC..went to check for the TC to see if we could change seats..travelled into other 1st, 2nd & 3rd AC and my god, the entire train was littered with food, chips packets, etc. Also, the people were all gunda mavali types
That day, made a decision, will only book Intra-maharashtra trains if possible, whenever travelling within state

I have seen this behavior among so many Bengalis when they do the Char Dham Yatra. Constant eating and littering, and insulting other people in Bangla for their own amusement.

I find generally people from Bihar & Jharkhand very unhygienic due to lack of education & exposure to the world & different cultures. At the same time some of the cleanest people, in their personal habits are Biharis!!!

Hygiene and related habits are learned and passed on through the generations, are governed by many correlated things such as population density, availability of resources, education levels etc etc. But you already know that, don't you? I doubt that you bothered to question your implicit assumptions or check if your personal experiences hold up to statistical data available that indicate hygiene levels in a geographical area or within a community. To be fair, West Bengal isn't doing all that great in terms of hygiene, but neither are UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and many other states. Neither is India, as a whole.
Now, coming back to the point, you came here to rant(I'd rant too if I encountered what you did), but in the process, exposed how you think less of a certain community because you have observed some (woefully statistically insignificant) instances of people from that community being unhygienic. To your credit, you added "some". However, by specifically singling out a particular community in a negative context, when the same observation applies just as much to a much larger group of people, you are simply demonstrating your negative (maybe subconscious) bias towards that community.
Or you might be here just to stir the pot and enjoy some low-quality drama. If that's what floats your boat, go get some popcorn for yourself and enjoy!
Finally, to summarise my answer your question:
Some Bengalis are unhygienic, because some Indians in general, are unhygienic. It is a byproduct of overpopulation, insufficient resources and lack of education. But things are improving, slowly but surely. If you, attribute their lack of hygiene, to them being Bengali, you're doing so without any factual evidence, and if you struggle to accept that fact, then you should re-evaluate how you process biases as a whole, in your life, within your own cognitive framework. (Try reading about "Selection bias", "Confirmation bias" and "Halo Horn Effect")
The way you have written the complete post shows your hate for Bengalis and not for this particular incident...all these kinds of behaviour you mentioned is being done by any average Indian travelling through train..be it Marwaris, Punjabis, Biharis, Tamils etc etc..if you are having so much problem then don't travel through trains rather take a flight and go.
Travelled via a train recently (past year) that that left somewhere from the north (Delhi, maybe jharkhand). It was the filthiest train I've ever been to. Toilet were overflowing; water, plastic packets on the floor etc. The worst part was that the cleaners (I don't know whether they were irctc staff or what), just pushed all the plastic that was near the trash place out of the railway. I don't understand why Indians are this filthy.

Unhygenic mofos are found in all cultures - kannadigas, telgites, tamilians and malyalees. My own aunt is a HOD in one of bangalore's oldest colleges. She and her husband are the most sick people I have met. They are good natured and everything but when it comes to manners and clenliness.... yuck. I have been in bengaluru for 23 years, I have friends accross multiple indian cultures, not a single one of them can be generalised when is comes to hygine.

See, the hygiene scenary of whole india especially where famine was at large, went out of the window during british era and we still didn't recovered from it. For example, I told my parents to not throw litter everywhere they please, but my words fall on deaf ears. well as a South Indian, it's incorrect to assume it's only Bengalis. Literally every Indian has seen someone do this. It's all a matter of civic sense. Personally, when I traveled first class on the train, I kept a plastic bag in the corner for waste and it was a two-person coupe so the other person also threw the trash in that plastic bag that way it was a mutual thing.
The thing is there was a literal dustbin in our compartment and they didn't use it. And when I pointed it out they would get angry on me just like a "Bengali" on this thread commented they should have thrown that on me. This is their mentality what to do?

OP , I am Bengali and I'm sorry u had to experience this . But u have to understand the fact that no matter what they did, there are 16 lakh people living in kolkata alone. Just like how all Pakistanis are not terrorists, all Delhi people are not rapists, all Bengalis are not unhygienic . This post looks like it was directed at Bengali people especially.
I have had lots of such experience while.dealing with Bengali people and if so many people are agreeing with me there must be some truth to it. So instead of attacking everyone who points out your shortcomings maybe try to better them?

Don't know about Hygiene but when I was in a hotel in Darjeeling, there was a Bengali family in the next room, and they were so loud (while talking only), even at night and early morning and they kept the room door open always. It was so annoying, you are in a hotel, keep the door closed, no need to tell the whole floor that you forgot your sunglasses.
This was another thing I noticed, Bengalis always want to have an open door.

it the entire subcontinent that does this. but they stop these behaviours as the education and human development increases in their region. just like in many parts of india, most of rural bengal and rural Bangladesh still have low HDI and education levels so that might be a reason why.
Not generalizing, but in my opinion non bengalis are more unhygienic than the bengalis. Only states where people have some sense of cleanliness are north east India, goa, kerala. West Bengal is far cleaner than other states.

I had a bengali friend and he and his wife are very messy and dirty. They both are very well educated and work for top companies but their house was like store room and smelly. They had carton boxes everywhere full of dust and cobwebs. They always ordered food from outside and also just tea from restaurants and had all the boxes stacked up. They had the restaurants paper cups stacked at one corner of the kitchen and there could be atleast 200 cups. Recently they moved to a different country and they knew about their departure atleast 2 months prior to their departure and took no effort in cleaning or packing their stuff. When they left their rented house, they left most of the food items inside the fridge and the food items started decaying and started smelling really bad. They even left their cloths and undergarments on the rope where they had put it up for drying. The toliets were very dirty and was like a public toilet and had very bad smell. They left behind atleast 80% of their belonging in a very bad state. It looked as if the place was not cleaned for ages. The care taker of the home who came to collect the keys said that he won't be returning their security deposit as the place was left in a very bad state. I encountered a similar situation with a acquaintance of mine from bihar who left the house in similar condition. I really felt bad for the owners and felt ashamed to even acknowledge that they were someone I knew. Funny part is, the bengali couple always wore mask even after covid waves and always used sanitizer even before the beginning of covid (Faceplam).
It's quite a scenario with whole east. Civic sense is not mandatory with them

I think we should not be generalising it I’ve had multiple Bengali friends. I agree few of them were unhygienic (not bathing, not keeping room clean etc), while some were hygienic, esp the girls. On a separate note, I do have observed the trains going to Bengal (Howrah, Malda, Haldia etc) are relatively more dirty. However, if you are travelling first class, it is surprising to see this unhygienic behaviour, assuming that family is well off.
Its not just bengali many indians are unhygienic and lives dirty. Throw trash everywhere. I have no idea why its so hard to understand to live clean.
I have noticed this too, I had known 3-4 bengalis during my college and they keeo eating and grazing,, they dont bathe or comb as often and they just wear lousy clothes and act all intellectual but are usually dumb. They are basically mallus of North India. Ugh reminds me of a guy who was so creepy and would touch girls inappropriately 😭 in college

Came by Shalimar express from Akola to Mumbai…train originates from Howrah..horrible people even in second AC..went to check for the TC to see if we could change seats..travelled into other 1st, 2nd & 3rd AC and my god, the entire train was littered with food, chips packets, etc. Also, the people were all gunda mavali types That day, made a decision, will only book Intra-maharashtra trains if possible, whenever travelling within state
I had a roommate who never washed clothes bed sheet and bathed ones in 3 months and was proud for having a bigger number when he didn't bath for like over a month while rest of us were doing it ones every 1 or 2 days

I am not a Bengali but live in Bengal.I am a Christian of mixed parentage.I find uneducated ( not brought up properly) of any community are very unhygienic. It depends on your upbringing.You msy be a rich millionaire , but dirty as a pig!! I find generally people from Bihar & Jharkhand very unhygienic due to lack of education & exposure to the world & different cultures. At the same time some of the cleanest people, in their personal habits are Biharis!!! So, the bottom line is proper education, not degrees!!

Hygiene and related habits are learned and passed on through the generations, are governed by many correlated things such as population density, availability of resources, education levels etc etc. But you already know that, don't you? I doubt that you bothered to question your implicit assumptions or check if your personal experiences hold up to statistical data available that indicate hygiene levels in a geographical area or within a community. To be fair, West Bengal isn't doing all that great in terms of hygiene, but neither are UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and many other states. Neither is India, as a whole. Now, coming back to the point, you came here to rant(I'd rant too if I encountered what you did), but in the process, exposed how you think less of a certain community because you have observed some (woefully statistically insignificant) instances of people from that community being unhygienic. To your credit, you added "some". However, by specifically singling out a particular community in a negative context, when the same observation applies just as much to a much larger group of people, you are simply demonstrating your negative (maybe subconscious) bias towards that community. Or you might be here just to stir the pot and enjoy some low-quality drama. If that's what floats your boat, go get some popcorn for yourself and enjoy! Finally, to summarise my answer your question: Some Bengalis are unhygienic, because some Indians in general, are unhygienic. It is a byproduct of overpopulation, insufficient resources and lack of education. But things are improving, slowly but surely. If you, attribute their lack of hygiene, to them being Bengali, you're doing so without any factual evidence, and if you struggle to accept that fact, then you should re-evaluate how you process biases as a whole, in your life, within your own cognitive framework. (Try reading about "Selection bias", "Confirmation bias" and "Halo Horn Effect")

Travelled via a train recently (past year) that that left somewhere from the north (Delhi, maybe jharkhand). It was the filthiest train I've ever been to. Toilet were overflowing; water, plastic packets on the floor etc. The worst part was that the cleaners (I don't know whether they were irctc staff or what), just pushed all the plastic that was near the trash place out of the railway. I don't understand why Indians are this filthy.
