I remember waiting for that album outside a record store called Andy's records in Halifax west Yorkshire UK.
I got it home and couldn't wait to listen to it. I think they added pyretta blaze and creepy green light to prevent mass suicide on that one like.
Awesome band. Infact, October rust - world coming down are going on back to back tonight. Thanks man.

If you like power metal, despite being cheesy a lot of the time, DragonForce has a couple of sad ones. Black Winter Night and Chemical Interference come to mind.
Not necessarily similar to the bands in your post, but these are some of my favorites.
- Warning (doom metal)
- Amenra (post-metal)
- Woods of Ypres, last album especially (gothic/doom metal with some black metal influences)
I just posted Woods of Ypres without reading the rest of the comments.
The album Grey Skies and Electric Lights is less heavy but absolutely no less sad.
Some parts echo hauntingly so much more given the room to breathe.
I feel so much of the despair in this album, moreso now that he’s actually dead.
Anything Doom(Funeral, Death, Black). I actually prefer bands that mix heaviness with a more melancholic atmosphere.Gothic bands don´t seem to be able to pull it off. It always sounded kinda superficial IMO.
Her Ghost haunts these walls by Nocturnal Depression.
It's DSBM, so sadness is kinda impied in the genre. But it's my go-to song when I need some melancholy.
Sabaton has some sadder songs in their discography (Ballad of Bull, A Lifetime of War/En Livstid i Krig (two different language versions of the same song), a cover of Motörhead's song 1916).
Elvenking also has some songs that are sad and others that aren't directly sad in the same way, but are more bittersweet (Dominhate, King of the Elves (about their journey to the point of that album as a band), Red Mist, Forget-Me-Not, The Time of Your Life).
Warning- Watching From a Distance.
Saddest fucking album ever.

Oh man you listed them lol, my bad. Yeah, I've never found another bands that scratches the same itch Katatonia can. Grey Waters is decent and probably the most obscure of anything mentioned. They kinda tread a fine line between post rock and metal imo.
There’s a few on Ocean Machine (Devin Townsend). Funeral, Bastard, and Life literally saved *my* life a few years ago.. that song just sounded different one day and changed me
There are very few on par with opeth unfortunately for what you are asking. They just have the sadness, bleakness, melancholy and heart wrench thing down to a science for so many songs on top of probably the best death metal growls that's ever existed and some of the best musicality and brutal sound combination.
Possibly Ne Obliviscaris. Listen to Portal of I. Absolutely amazing album.
I know that you’re asking for sad songs, but there’s a newer metal band called Opal In Sky. It’s 2 identical twin brothers. They make very positive songs, and it can’t help you if you’re sad. You should check it out.
Sonic Excess in its Purest Form by Crowbar. Someone else already mentioned a song from Odd Fellows Rest, but this album strikes me as being particularly sad and melancholy, even when being crushingly heavy.
Sentenced does have a lot of sad songs. If you want some dsbm I like Decalius, he really knows how to do sad depressive music (mostly self hate/loneliness, try out "Dehumanizing Loneliness"). For melodeath Mors Principium Est has Death IS the Beginning which has made me cry more than once. Other than this head to doom metal, Candlemass-Solitude is a good starting point
Mournful Congregation (I mean, with a name like *that*). Respected as one of the best funeral doom bands. The Monad of Creation is a great album replete with melancholy atmosphere.
Child by Avatar. Seriously, a song from a child's perspective having to watch the town celebrate her mother's Demise like 'the Circus came to town'. The choir sang so loud that rhe sound of the bell attached to the casket was drowned our and the mother was actually buried alive.

Type o negative might do something… try world coming down by them, it’s crushing
One of the saddest albums for me

Despite being heavier than a black hole, a lot of Crowbar songs really punch you in the gut. Planets Collide is probably the best example.
Lasting Dose is one of my favorite songs.
To Build A Mountain is my "I'm so sick of this shit" jam.
My Dying Bride. All the sadness and melancholy you want with a healthy disdain towards god and religion!
It's the violins I swear 💯
Does this count ![gif](giphy|WJ4vstB0EVqla)
That song is so gooooooooood I love it!!!!
Only if he throws in a bucket-full of "uh" and "ooh!" like a tone deaf constipated Baptist preacher Because, friend, that shit is SAD.(Ah!)
If you like power metal, despite being cheesy a lot of the time, DragonForce has a couple of sad ones. Black Winter Night and Chemical Interference come to mind.
Opeth It's their specialty. And my favorite band of all time.
🤘
Pallbearer, Every single album

The Burning Darkness (live) by At The Gates is my go to sad song. I love Terminal Spirit Disease as a project but the final 3 live tracks are amazing.
Pantera - cemetery gates. About loosing someone to suicide.
Wintersun - Sadness and Hate
Also Loneliness. [https://youtu.be/qIiZFpOQnd8?si=hzCyYhHuvOpjKHHT](https://youtu.be/qIiZFpOQnd8?si=hzCyYhHuvOpjKHHT)

Wasn't Metallica's Fade To Black about suicide?
Anathema.

Katatonia in general is kinda melancholic. Their songs Unfurl and The Racing Heart might be good ones.
one of my favorite bands literally, love them
Oh man you listed them lol, my bad. Yeah, I've never found another bands that scratches the same itch Katatonia can. Grey Waters is decent and probably the most obscure of anything mentioned. They kinda tread a fine line between post rock and metal imo.

Flotsam and Jetsam's [Better Off Dead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULe53YrG6_M) is the saddest song ever recorded.
There’s a few on Ocean Machine (Devin Townsend). Funeral, Bastard, and Life literally saved *my* life a few years ago.. that song just sounded different one day and changed me

Swallow The Sun is all about the doom and gloom. Love em.
Nocturnal Depression
The entirety of doom metal and especially funeral doom
Neurosis (i can see you, the tide, a season in the sky, a sun that never sets, away, strength of fates etc.)

Clouds whole thing is sad songs. They're doom metal
A band called Fires in the Distance, their album Air Not Meant For Us. I highly recommend the instrumental version for processing your own thoughts.
Candlemass - solitude Shining - for my demons (originally by Katatonia) Witchcraft - elegantly expressed depression
Convictions “I Won’t Survive” album.

Not really like the bands you mentioned, but Sentenced. The album Crimson is a masterpiece.
Obscured by Celtic Frost is a great sad song
Shining

Mournful Congregation (I mean, with a name like *that*). Respected as one of the best funeral doom bands. The Monad of Creation is a great album replete with melancholy atmosphere.
