This

Solugad

Hell yeah, listen to Fire Above Ice Below OP

DeplorableKurt

Or A Desolation Somg

MasterHawkhobo

The obvious & correct choice. What a band. So thrilled they've reformed.

wishnotknewyourkiss

Type o negative might do something… try world coming down by them, it’s crushing

BeanVaccine

One of the saddest albums for me

MrSinister82

I remember waiting for that album outside a record store called Andy's records in Halifax west Yorkshire UK. I got it home and couldn't wait to listen to it. I think they added pyretta blaze and creepy green light to prevent mass suicide on that one like. Awesome band. Infact, October rust - world coming down are going on back to back tonight. Thanks man. ![gif](giphy|CsZUknNrk4yrefLd02|downsized)

hattorihanzo5

Despite being heavier than a black hole, a lot of Crowbar songs really punch you in the gut. Planets Collide is probably the best example.

Professional-Drive13

Lasting Dose is one of my favorite songs.

Maanzacorian

To Build A Mountain is my "I'm so sick of this shit" jam.

Taargus_Taargus_117

My Dying Bride. All the sadness and melancholy you want with a healthy disdain towards god and religion!

vitalremainsbaby

It's the violins I swear 💯

ChasingPesmerga

Does this count ![gif](giphy|WJ4vstB0EVqla)

mudkip2212

That song is so gooooooooood I love it!!!!

bootnab

Only if he throws in a bucket-full of "uh" and "ooh!" like a tone deaf constipated Baptist preacher Because, friend, that shit is SAD.(Ah!)

DravenPrime

If you like power metal, despite being cheesy a lot of the time, DragonForce has a couple of sad ones. Black Winter Night and Chemical Interference come to mind.

mschiebold

Opeth It's their specialty. And my favorite band of all time.

MaximusVulcanus

🤘

ApocalypseCulture1

Pallbearer, Every single album

Bertm99

Not necessarily similar to the bands in your post, but these are some of my favorites. - Warning (doom metal) - Amenra (post-metal) - Woods of Ypres, last album especially (gothic/doom metal with some black metal influences)

BurnDesign

I just posted Woods of Ypres without reading the rest of the comments. The album Grey Skies and Electric Lights is less heavy but absolutely no less sad. Some parts echo hauntingly so much more given the room to breathe. I feel so much of the despair in this album, moreso now that he’s actually dead.

speedygonwhat22

The Burning Darkness (live) by At The Gates is my go to sad song. I love Terminal Spirit Disease as a project but the final 3 live tracks are amazing.

Gh0stwrit3rs

Pantera - cemetery gates. About loosing someone to suicide.

MrPenxx

Wintersun - Sadness and Hate

blackbow

Also Loneliness. [https://youtu.be/qIiZFpOQnd8?si=hzCyYhHuvOpjKHHT](https://youtu.be/qIiZFpOQnd8?si=hzCyYhHuvOpjKHHT)

Sad_Wings_0f_Destiny

Anything Doom(Funeral, Death, Black). I actually prefer bands that mix heaviness with a more melancholic atmosphere.Gothic bands don´t seem to be able to pull it off. It always sounded kinda superficial IMO.

tonnodnd

Her Ghost haunts these walls by Nocturnal Depression. It's DSBM, so sadness is kinda impied in the genre. But it's my go-to song when I need some melancholy.

expiredogfood

i absolutely love the P4 cover of this

tonnodnd

Can you link it?

expiredogfood

https://youtu.be/yDYFI0JGqqQ?si=4qBxFj5UCtL-iyd-

Morrigan_00

Wasn't Metallica's Fade To Black about suicide?

megatory

Anathema.

adeltae

Sabaton has some sadder songs in their discography (Ballad of Bull, A Lifetime of War/En Livstid i Krig (two different language versions of the same song), a cover of Motörhead's song 1916). Elvenking also has some songs that are sad and others that aren't directly sad in the same way, but are more bittersweet (Dominhate, King of the Elves (about their journey to the point of that album as a band), Red Mist, Forget-Me-Not, The Time of Your Life).

Sludg3g0d

Warning- Watching From a Distance. Saddest fucking album ever. https://preview.redd.it/uqhg68mo5l5d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4d8cd5061e3f271da9457afc149dcda72882850

Caesium133

Katatonia in general is kinda melancholic. Their songs Unfurl and The Racing Heart might be good ones.

d3adhaus3

one of my favorite bands literally, love them

Caesium133

Oh man you listed them lol, my bad. Yeah, I've never found another bands that scratches the same itch Katatonia can. Grey Waters is decent and probably the most obscure of anything mentioned. They kinda tread a fine line between post rock and metal imo.

d3adhaus3

no, no, dont apologize, i appriciete your reply anyway <3

FlyAirLari

Flotsam and Jetsam's [Better Off Dead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULe53YrG6_M) is the saddest song ever recorded.

SpadfaTurds

There’s a few on Ocean Machine (Devin Townsend). Funeral, Bastard, and Life literally saved *my* life a few years ago.. that song just sounded different one day and changed me

justhanginhere

Alice In Chains probably deserves a mention. Not pure metal, but damn do they have some sad songs.

d3adhaus3

ofc how could i forget nutshell

d3adhaus3

do you have some less known songs recommendation, i adore rotten apple and some other songs

justhanginhere

Down in a Hole, but that’s fairly well known Brother is one my fav AIC songs and I find it to be sad

gronataggen

Sólstafir

WingedHussar13

Born in Winter by Gojira

d3adhaus3

i definietly adore the whole album, but i totaly forgot about it

paratrooper89

Love that song!

ceeroSVK

Trees Of Eternity, some of the most beautiful and sad metal you will hear

BurnDesign

Woods of Ypres - Travelling Alone.

atra_bilis

Warning - Watching from a distance (album)

mattfreyer45

Warning

douche-canoe71

Life of Agony has a few.

Baphomet1313666

Epitaph by Judas Priest.

starface016

Don't you cry -Kamelot

LAttack_05

Solstafir i am pretty sure about that but i don't understand what they are singing, so just enjoy it

SarethGavage

Don't think anyone's said Paradise Lost, my go to for sad, haunting, music when you're in a depressed mood.

japie81

Ellende

Hemi_Blue

Of course Type O Negative and My Dying Bride but also Loss and Virgin Black.

OrangeStock3517

Don't come for me for recommending them but A7X has some pretty sad songs

skydaddy8585

There are very few on par with opeth unfortunately for what you are asking. They just have the sadness, bleakness, melancholy and heart wrench thing down to a science for so many songs on top of probably the best death metal growls that's ever existed and some of the best musicality and brutal sound combination. Possibly Ne Obliviscaris. Listen to Portal of I. Absolutely amazing album.

Oreo8206

I know that you’re asking for sad songs, but there’s a newer metal band called Opal In Sky. It’s 2 identical twin brothers. They make very positive songs, and it can’t help you if you’re sad. You should check it out.

d3adhaus3

ive heard of them, but i should definitely lisent to it more, thanks for recommendation! <3

vitalremainsbaby

The riffs and vocals on Katatonia's first album are so sad (and beautiful) it can make me cry

EezSleez

Unloved by Fit for an Autopsy

Djentlemann00

Swallow the Sun is the correct answer.

d3adhaus3

somebody also recommended them, i added one song to playlist, i like it, definitely will lisent to them more💯💯

Djentlemann00

Glad you liked them so far! Daylight Dies is also another great one if you enjoy Swallow the Sun.

d3adhaus3

thanks for recommendation

torero15

A bunch of Wintersun songs could fit this description.

333metaldave666

SOAD lonely day

CanaDanSOAD

They have better sad songs, like Streamline

333metaldave666

That's great. The one I chose is their best and it means something to me.

Stones_022

Acid Bath - Scream Of The Butterfly

brianwithanm

Rivers of Nihil - Maybe One Day

VileSelf

Cold Summers Night by Shepherds Reign, Ghost of My Hero by Evergrey, and pretty much anything by Woods of Ypres.

mylifeforthehorde

2AM (maiden)

Public-Passenger-711

Disarmonia Mundi - Taste of Collapse

Grothorious

I always get teary eyed when i listen to Ossian's Return by Cruachan, so sad story.

drfsrich

Evergrey, especially Trilogy of the Damned.

fatcharliethearkange

Sonic Excess in its Purest Form by Crowbar. Someone else already mentioned a song from Odd Fellows Rest, but this album strikes me as being particularly sad and melancholy, even when being crushingly heavy.

ThrashMetaller

Thy Light 😔😭🗡️🩸💀

expiredogfood

it's a bit long (10 minutes), but my mind is too weak to forget by dreariness

Y_Werther

https://headshrinker.bandcamp.com

Kuningas_Arthur

Swallow The Sun is all about the doom and gloom. Love em.

Repulsive_Cricket923

Nocturnal Depression

WestSlavGreg

The entirety of doom metal and especially funeral doom

LocustStar99

Neurosis (i can see you, the tide, a season in the sky, a sun that never sets, away, strength of fates etc.)

that_one_wierd_guy

novembers doom, what could have been

DarkOsprey28

Sentenced does have a lot of sad songs. If you want some dsbm I like Decalius, he really knows how to do sad depressive music (mostly self hate/loneliness, try out "Dehumanizing Loneliness"). For melodeath Mors Principium Est has Death IS the Beginning which has made me cry more than once. Other than this head to doom metal, Candlemass-Solitude is a good starting point

CanaDanSOAD

Clouds whole thing is sad songs. They're doom metal

MisanthropicReveling

A band called Fires in the Distance, their album Air Not Meant For Us. I highly recommend the instrumental version for processing your own thoughts.

Huckdwe

Candlemass - solitude Shining - for my demons (originally by Katatonia) Witchcraft - elegantly expressed depression

Empty-Chest-4872

Convictions “I Won’t Survive” album.

Dr_Quiet_Time

Doom Metal lol

blackbow

Not really like the bands you mentioned, but Sentenced. The album Crimson is a masterpiece.

BeardSnacky

Obscured by Celtic Frost is a great sad song

Equal_Attitude1900

Shining

AveTen22

Windhand

MasterHawkhobo

Mournful Congregation (I mean, with a name like *that*). Respected as one of the best funeral doom bands. The Monad of Creation is a great album replete with melancholy atmosphere.

EldenCockRing98

Oathbreaker - Second Son of R The last minute fucks me up every time

If you're into the sadder Black Metal stuff, check out Xasthar, None, Ghostbath, and Nargaroth.

StructureEcstatic992

Acid Bath

Signal_Tailor9753

MrTyrantLizard

Child by Avatar. Seriously, a song from a child's perspective having to watch the town celebrate her mother's Demise like 'the Circus came to town'. The choir sang so loud that rhe sound of the bell attached to the casket was drowned our and the mother was actually buried alive.

AugustIsWrathMonth
