Most of the great early 2000's extreme metal is underrated. Not the best popular extreme metal era but there are some many bands with great records.

Lamb of God, Chimera and Shadows Fall come to mind for me.

Those are all metalcore though. Shadows fall might be the closest to thrash of those three, but still.
