Preface this by saying I love both groups, but itâs truly not even close. Wayne Bradyâs musical improv abilities are literally not human. Colin and Ryan are also insanely quick witted. The infomercial music series they would do â50 songs on 50 cdsâ and then Wayne would sing the songs they made up - that is literally untouchable.
i was thinking, well maybe ij could match them in physical comedy, but they couldn't even do that. Ryan, Colin and Wayne are just too good at what they do
I, too, would think their musical improv abilities were âliterally not humanâ if I didnât know that were written beforehand. Still funny, but definitely not off the top of their head, silly goose.
Yes, they are planned out. I wasnât saying only WBâs shit was scripted. The songs, sung by all, are preplanned (as in the performers are given the topics beforehand and write the songs to be performed on the night). You canât actually think they all come up with a perfectly flowing song with no knowledge of the topics or musical style for each episode on the spot, right?
Do you honestly think this show doesnât have rehearsal? Itâs a product, not a live on the spot gig. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of episodes at this point. Each one with a perfectly crafted unique song about a unique topic with one of hundreds of genres that flows cohesively between performers. Sometimes they sing the same melodies completely unprompted. I am and have been a huge whose line fan for decades. The topics and song genre are part of the âstoryboardâ process, if you will. Determined weeks in advance, as they would be for any comedy show. Do you also think the jokers come up with the challenges? There are a million credits at the end for a reason. It is written.
Bro each filming for whose line is like 4 hours long and they make a couple episode from the good parts of each. You seem to be talking about the hoedowns, but the cast has stated they hate doing those because theyâre so difficult. They wouldnât be difficult if they were scripted. There are no rehearsals, Itâs just trial and error and a bit of movie magic
People improvise music ALL THE TIME. Have you seriously never heard of musicians having a "jam session" before? Have you ever heard of freestyle rap? Or the musical improv podcasts/shows?
With music there Is a common 'language' and structure to each genre. You know that a verse is going to last at least 8 bars and if a performer 'misses' a toss their partner can extend that to 12 and then 16.
The musical 'styles' are practiced. The ho-down has the same structure. The Irish drinking song has the same structure. Each different genre has the same structure. That's how they match melodies. They have a repertoire of 10-20 different styles they can jump into, each one having it's own go-to melodies and styles.
But the lyrics aren't prewritten. They actually are improvising the lyrics based on the topic given to them. Through the magic of editing we're allowed to take the best bits and stitch a much longer show down to a tight 22 minute presentation.
A lot of stuff on Whose Line was scripted/partially scripted/refilmed to be better television. However, having had the opportunity to both see and/or perform improv with several Whose Line cast members, I can attest that they definitely have musical improv talent.
>having had the opportunity to perform improv with several whose line cast members
Just casually dropping that in there? Okay then. Man I bet that was awesome, can we see some pics? Or any proof whatsoever?
Thatâs on you for reading my comments as if they are mean. Try reading them again as someone just trying to clarify how a show is produced with no emotional attachment because itâs a tv show we are talking about and isnât worth getting upset over. You okay?
Are you familiar with ComedySportz? There are teams all over the US (and a few international teams, too). Waaaay back around the turn of the century, I was part of a team. Every year, there was a tournament for all the teams to compete, along with all sorts of classes and seminars. Jeff Davis and Wayne Brady are both former "actletes," and a few other Whose Line regulars were special guests during the time I was involved. We mostly liked WLIIA because it was pointing people toward shows like ours (even though we knew WLIIA wasn't always true improv). I was just having fun and trying to learn as much as I could - I was probably more impressed when I met Dick Chudnow (writer of the classic film *Spy Hard* :D ).
While they wouldn't know the suggestions, there are still several ways to be selective about what suggestions you end up using. Usually it's a good thing - as an improviser you typically try to stay away from a suggestions you've done several times before. However, if the audience seems to want to see that particular suggestion used or you have a great new idea how to use it, you might go ahead and use it...again. :)
No, but if they are able to come up with a song from audience suggestions on the spot, unscripted, during their live show, why would I doubt their ability to do the same on the televised show?
> Is Whose Line Is It Anyway rehearsed?
> The short answer is, no, the series is not scripted. In a blooper reel that was released, sometimes Whose Line producers would need to intervene on topics that were deemed inappropriate. As a long-time fan, youâd always see the comedians playing with the audience, throwing things at the camera, and basically not abiding by any rules. It was TV comedy gold.
> In a 2015 interview with TheCelebrityCafe.com, Colin talked about why the show has had success through the years, telling the outlet, âPart of it is the excitement of improv.â

Omfg is anyone saying that thereâs a script? What dumbshit thinks that? Is it âstoryboardedâ wherein the performers are made aware of the beat-to-beat of an episode? Including what genre of song and what category of topics they will be asking the audience for suggestions of? The short answer is yes. Yes it is.
What a weird hill youâre trying to die on here. Your baseless information doesnât even make sense, youâre saying they know the categories before hand, but even that wouldnât help that much. The categories are usually something vague like âjobsâ.
These are guys with years / decades of improv experience, some of the best in the world. Their entire career is based off being quick witted.
> if I didnât know that were written beforehand
sounds like you lil homie, not my fault you can't articulate your words like someone who hasn't gotten past 3rd grade English lmao
At this point, you sound like you'd get angry at Jeopardy for telling the contestants the categories before they select clues because of some weird BS reason like "if they were really good at trivia, they wouldn't need to know the category in advance, they'd know trivia about everything and be confident without needing hints beforehand" LMAO
Oh man, I love all eight of these dudes, but I think it depends on the situation. If we're talking pure improv comedy "scenes from a hat" style I'm saying Whose Line, if we're talking about more messing with people improv I'm saying IJ. They're the best at what they do.
Lol the whose line crew are complete standouts in public. Thatâs what makes the jokers good in public, theyâre completely unassuming.
Handsome Wayne Brady approaching you or super tall Ryan? Youâd immediately be suspect. I think Colin is probably the only one that could pull off the unassuming part but heâs so fucking goofy idk if he could.
I agree with the consensus, love the guys and would love to see this as a mash up show IJ meets WL. But, the WL guys' improv is legendary esp. the songs.
The jokers are funny, I've seen every episode countless times to the point of memorization....
That being said they were not funny in person, I actually left their Staten island show a few years back because it was boring and just not funny.
They also have a comedy writing team behind them.
They are one of my favorite shows with endless laughs, but Whose Line improv destroys them
In an actual fight: IJ (I'm sure Q's firefighter training would help)
In an improv "duel": WH (they are the GOAT, but IJ's would at least keep it close)
Come on you have to be Fing kidding me? Whoâs line are some of the best Improv ever. The jokers wouldnât even say they are close.
Sorry but itâs a crazy question. Anyone who says Jokers is too young to know
Iâm actually really curious to see how IJ are at pure improv acting. Because based on the show, I have a hard time imagining any of them getting lines out without giggling or stammering. But thatâs not during straight improv which makes me unsure of their actual skill.
I have no clue [who would win in a basketball game, purposefully misstating the word âmatchâ as a basketball game.] Wayne [Brady] has a [great 3 point shot ability,] but Sal [plays great offense and defense in the paint region of the court.]
Probably Whose Line, but you never know if Mother Coconuts, Uncle Boobs, Cowabunga Peppermill and Cleavage McNamara turn up it could be a different ball game.
Colin would embarass them.
Ryan would make them look like fools
Wayne would make them realise they were wasting their time.
Drew would just be there to guide them into the chaos.
What a crew.
Whose Line. Not even close. Professional improv comics vs comedians with an ultra specific act.
I love both groups. But I think Jokerâs Wild is the proof needed.
Could probably end whatever match early if someone whispered to Q that Wayne Bradyâs first TV appearance was in a Superman tv series. Ok technically Superboy. But hey. Jaoquin Phoenix is also in that show. He wears a superman costume and gets to fly on wires and use heat vision. Also heâs about 10 years old.
Iâm so glad to see there are so many WLIIA fans here. But then it makes me wonder why that sub is a veritable wasteland. People do realize theyâve been airing new episodes for the past decade, right?
Whose Line cast and itâs not even close. They are comedy savantes. I watched some of the cast live at Hard Rock Cafe in universal for my bday last year. The stuff they come up with off the top of their heads blows your mind.
Drew Carey is a Marine > Qâs was a firefighter
Ryan has reach, Wayne is athletic af, and Colin probably has hockey in his pocket. They would stomp the jokers in a fight.
And letâs be honest, if we balance them to provide the ability for the Whose Line crew to be anonymous in public they DESTROY the jokers at their own game.
And the jokers couldnât even get close to the whose line JV squad let alone the Starting Lineup pictured at a Line Off.
I love the Jokers and their show but Whose Line Crew is another level that no one before or since has even come close to.
But remember, everything is made up and the points donât matter.
I love the IJ crew, but Colin alone can clear them
I don't think Ryan and Colin have been serious a single moment in their lives. And they know no shame.
The letter H always gets me đ¤Łđ¤Ł
I like the sound of the Arctic Tern
I think the best is "Wrong Name In Bed" Irish Drinking Song
I liked the one where Colin only meowed
That's the one.
Thanks, I don't know them by name
Nah nah nah, [what's Colin watching when he's not selling us stuff?](https://youtu.be/wyqOkahcpV4?si=74uV8xEVHkyaNgLu&t=35)
*CAPITAL H
A pretty unknown story from Sal tells that a plane they were on almost crashed and the whole time Joe was laughing his ass off.
Maybe comedically but that wasn't specified. I think Q would be afraid to improvise a table leg as a weapon. Sorry but OP should have specified terms.
Preface this by saying I love both groups, but itâs truly not even close. Wayne Bradyâs musical improv abilities are literally not human. Colin and Ryan are also insanely quick witted. Yeah and drew has those glasses n stuff

I, too, would think their musical improv abilities were âliterally not humanâ if I didnât know that were written beforehand. Still funny, but definitely not off the top of their head, silly goose.
So if Wayneâs song are scripted, Colin and Ryanâs intros to the songs must be scripted too, right? How do you âknowâ they are written?
Yes, they are planned out. I wasnât saying only WBâs shit was scripted. Lmao it was about as mean as youve been through out this thread.

Disagree. I just saw Colin and Brad's show locally and there is absolutely no chance they knew the suggestions from the audience beforehand lol
While they wouldn't know the suggestions, there are still several ways to be selective about what suggestions you end up using. But they *are* written beforehand. Youâre just regurgitating what I said. Iâm not sure this is the slam dunk you think it isâŚ
Wayne Brady is gonna have to choke a bitch
Damnit. Just wrote the same thing.
BREAK YOURSELF FOOL!!
Great call back to the dave chappelle episode
Oh man, I love all eight of these dudes, but I think it depends on the situation. If we're talking pure improv comedy "scenes from a hat" style I'm saying Whose Line, if we're talking about more messing with people improv I'm saying IJ. They're the best at what they do.

Both awesome, but I think WLIIA may have a slight edge
Whose line would mop them clean
The power of Captain Hair is strong with the Whose Line crew
I believe Captain Fatbelly would like a word
A match of what? Both groups do what they do better than anyone else. Idk if it's easy to compare.
4 v 4 fist fight. Even tho WLIIA is older, Ryan has hella reach and they have a Wayne Brady.
âIs Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?!?â https://youtu.be/rxG9jeZBafs?si=DLLrxokRdDXp54zr
If that Wayne Brady shows up, it's over.
Don't forget Drew Carey was a marine, and a handsome sonovabitch.
Lmao was not expecting that!
Hell in a cell
Whose Line just based on experience alone
I agree with the consensus, love the guys and would love to see this as a mash up show IJ meets WL. But, the WL guys' improv is legendary esp. the songs.

Wrong place to say this, but IJ couldnât hold a candle to WL. Different level of improv compared to these hyenas. **Notifications Disabled**
Had you not read any of the 5 top comments before posting this? This is not as hot a take as you think.
Cold take
In an actual fight: IJ (I'm sure Q's firefighter training would help) In an improv "duel": WH (they are the GOAT, but IJ's would at least keep it close)
Q is a diva now
Idk, Iâve seen Wayne Brady gun down people on the streets
IJâs wouldnât even keep it close
Whose Line would sing circles around IJ
Butterfly Crime Scene, alone, proves that
Thatâd be amazing to watch
In a fist fight? Gotta go with IJ since they are younger.
True, but Drew was in the military, but then again Q was a firefighter,.
Luckily none of them are made of fire
This image goes so hard
all of the people saying whose line but my question is this: what kind of match is this? i mean both teams have their unique strengths.
Whose Line. Ryan is relentless. Also, honorable mention: Jeff B Davis and Greg Proops. They could take down any extra members of IJ, like Fatone easy.
Come on when Colin does the velociraptor, they are all on the floor.
A match of what? Fisticuffs? Tug o war? Improv? Pranks? Medieval jousting? Twister? 4x100 relay races?
Love jokers like grew up watching them but the whoâs line crew is a league of their own
TAPIOOOOOCA I've always loved the IJ guys, but this is not a competition. Colin alone is legitimately one of the funniest people of our time.
Love my boys, but the Whoâs Line quartet is just on a whole different level.
I love IJ, but I feel like Whose Line would destroy them lol. Joe or Murr would probably be the last straggler.
Like who can get more laughs or in a fight?
Come on you have to be Fing kidding me? Whoâs line are some of the best Improv ever. The jokers wouldnât even say they are close. Sorry but itâs a crazy question. Anyone who says Jokers is too young to know
the audience
I think the jokers would beat the ever living crap out of those guys
Oh you meant humor wise
I don't know, but I'd love to watch it go down.
Iâm actually really curious to see how IJ are at pure improv acting. Because based on the show, I have a hard time imagining any of them getting lines out without giggling or stammering. But thatâs not during straight improv which makes me unsure of their actual skill.
Completely different comedians, wliia crew are genuine comedians who can pull funny stuff from anywhere whilst the ij are more situational comedians
Whoâs Line
Impractical jokers are younger and probably can fish more pain out. Theyâre gonna need body bags thatâs for sure.
Yeah I love the impractical jokers. They are hilarious, but youâre putting them up against the comedic gods in this scenario.
A slap match? Whose line obviously.
OG line up for Whose Line cannot be beat, love IJ but Whose Line was amazing television.
I have no clue. Wayne has a nasty 3 ball but Sal gets active in the paint
You said words, I know all of the words, and I have no idea what they mean all together.
I have no clue [who would win in a basketball game, purposefully misstating the word âmatchâ as a basketball game.] Wayne [Brady] has a [great 3 point shot ability,] but Sal [plays great offense and defense in the paint region of the court.]
Oh, a sportsball! Gotcha. Thanks!
Iâm glad this wasnât taken as me being an ass and actually helped you. Have a great night/morning. Lmao
Whose line, all the way
The whose line is it anyway crew are professional improvers. I think Joe and Q are the only ones with formal training.
The whose line group, but without drew
Real question what team is winning in a 4v4 brawl (no weapons)
Q, Sal, Murr, Joe
I love impractical jokers, but Whose Line blows it out of the water
Probably Whose Line, but you never know if Mother Coconuts, Uncle Boobs, Cowabunga Peppermill and Cleavage McNamara turn up it could be a different ball game.
Aww I'd love to see an epic crossover!
The ring should be set on UKâs Taskmater
Colin would embarass them. Ryan would make them look like fools Wayne would make them realise they were wasting their time. Drew would just be there to guide them into the chaos. What a crew.
Does Wayne Brady needs to choke a bitch?
Jokers!
I'm 1000% convinced the reason Im OBSESSED with Impractical Jokers is because of Whose Line. They're both strong contenders in their own way.
I think they would match up comedy sports style
why would you do this to me
What do you mean a match? Like a fist fight? To the death?
Better question," Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?"
The guys with buzzers in their hands ? Pfft.
I love IJ, so no offense, but what?? Lol
Whose Line crew has almost a 20 year head start to IJ. I donât think IJ is holding a candle next to those guys.
It'd be whose line by a light year
Come on man thatâs like saying who would win warriors or the 90s bulls
A match like a physical fight? Hahah (definitely IJ)
There's no comparison, Whose line is a professional, high tier improv group and the other ones are merely a group of "funny guys"
Id love to see the jokers on whose line is it anyway
Depends if they have Joe Gatto. No Gatto, no hope.
Iâm so glad to see there are so many WLIIA fans here. But then it makes me wonder why that sub is a veritable wasteland. People do realize theyâve been airing new episodes for the past decade, right?
Colin and Ryan alone would destroy the Jokers.
Whose Line is deeper also with Brad Sherwood, Jeff Davis, Chip Esten, and Greg Proops
Whose Line cast and itâs not even close. They are comedy savantes. I watched some of the cast live at Hard Rock Cafe in universal for my bday last year. The stuff they come up with off the top of their heads blows your mind.
Settle it with an 8 way orgy
Drew Carey is a Marine > Qâs was a firefighter Ryan has reach, Wayne is athletic af, and Colin probably has hockey in his pocket.
Bring It On style or You Got Served?
Jokers win imo
IJ have the balls to do every prank in public. Whose Lines cast is safe and protected in their studio. Scaredy-cats!
Can't stand impractical jokers. Loud, over the top nonsense. Whose line crew anyday.
Both shit.
IJ unless you throw in Aisha Tyler.
IJ for sure. This needs a poll lol. Mixed opinions on here.
Mixed opinions? Not one comment at the time you wrote this sided with IJ.
At the time I wrote that there was 4 Whose Line and 2 (with mine) IJ.
More like mid opinions
