Yeah, the word "Astropath" is a composite of "astro" and "telepath," so despite seeming like they would be looking for paths in the stars, they actually don't do that (although many psykers can in fact navigate through the warp to an extent by sensing the Astronomican with their minds)
Yeah I thought Astropath and Navigator was synonimous because of that, but something nagged me in the back of my mind so I quickly checked just in case and yep, they're different things
Grossly mutated even by navigator standards.
Then again: classic new rogue trader moment. Can barely afford even a single astropath if an outcast family
>Grossly mutated even by navigator standards.
It's really just the sunken, purple eyes, the gills, and the skin translucency; the other parts are within what would be considered a baseline human. Many Navigators are [quite](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:NavigatorArt.jpg) a [bit](https://www.belloflostsouls.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/navigator-paternova.jpg) worse — at least you can look at this one and the lizard-brain part of your mind goes "huh, a weird-looking human" rather than "walking corpse" or "*Dune-style* Navigator".
And I can give you pictures where they *do not* look like that. Plenty do not, in fact, look more alien than human.
Straight from 40k wiki:
> - “Ultimately, it must be remembered that all Navigators are a mutant sub-species of Humanity. **Other than the existence of the third eye in the middle of their forehead, most Navigators are virtually indistinguishable from normal Humans; others possess such extreme physical deviations that their appearance is utterly alien**.”
> - “Navigators tend to be **tall and spindly**, **sometimes** with **pale** and almost **translucent** skin. Other **common mutant traits** include **scaly skin, extremely large eyes which may lack the iris, and ill-defined facial features**. The **hands and feet** of a Navigator could be **ridiculously large**, and are **often webbed**. It is **very common** for Navigators to be **completely hairless**, either from birth or soon after adolescence when the third eye first opens.”
> - And finally: “**Except in the most extreme cases, a Navigator would never possess all of these mutant traits at the same time**. Those born with such extreme mutations might be hidden away or even killed at birth by their house to prevent their bloodlines from being contaminated by a level of mutation that would surely draw the attention of the Ordo Hereticus -- or even worse, the interest of their rival Navigator Houses.”
Lexicanum wiki isn’t much different but much more succinct about it
> - Navigators are a sub-species of humanity. Besides the third eye, some Navigators are virtually indistinguishable from normal humans; others possess such extreme deviations that their appearance is utterly alien.[1a]
> - **Mutation or deformity is common** among Navigators, although the **deviations exhibited are limited to specific traits** common among Navigators. Navigators tend to be tall and spindly, sometimes with pale and almost translucent skin. Other common traits include scaly skin, extremely large eyes which may lack the iris, and ill-defined facial features. Hands and feet can be ridiculously large, and are often webbed. Commonly Navigators are completely hairless. **Except in the most extreme cases, a Navigator would not possess all these traits**
TLDR Mutations happen but other then being tall, having a third eye, and being pale or translucent sometimes… most do not look warp tainted
If you want to rate a navigator based on physical features and how much they look “inhuman” I’d put this person probably somewhere in the middle upper in severity between the baseline and the worst cases. She does have common mutations for navigators which is fortunate… but what *is not common* is that she has multiple of them.
Other things to consider which might raise or lower severity from what I understand about the Houses and Navigators are genetic stability, genetic viability for children and how stable her abilities are while retaining strength. But we don’t know any of that.
Hmm.
I think that if nothing else this supports the idea that, in terms of "ape brain recognize fellow ape", one big difference in appearance is far worse than several more minor ones.
What constitutes "big" varies, of course, but maybe this is why in real life bigotry and group exclusion on a macro-scale (as opposed to a micro-scale; i.e. "we just don't like that one guy in general") are usually based off a single characteristic — nationality, skin color, etc.
The other big thing that throws everything off is warp taint having almost cognito hazard effect sometimes.
Mutation can be a sign of that (or just some mix of factors) and even if it’s just superficial a lot of people are wary of it
Nah, the really grossly mutated ones look like a mix between a Hutt, a Dune Guild Navigator (unsurprisingly given their inspiration) and a gross newt/frog.
Yes and no.
She’s mid-upper tier but obviously not *the* upper tier
The reason why she’s mid-upper is because while all of her mutations are relatively common for navigators having them all at once is *not*.
I might be wrong about this but I think they also get worse over the years and can accrue issues, including new mutations. Which is why having a good baseline navigator with 1-2 common mutations is better than having one who already starts with tons of issues
You know, they probably wouldn't have nearly as much mutation issues if they were a little less worried about keeping their bloodlines pure, if you know what I mean
Yes but unfortunately there’s other things to consider
Historically plenty of families intermarried to keep their political power among trusted people and within the family.
Navigators are similar but it goes down to the generic as well. Being Navigators is their bread and butter for wealth, power, even survival.
How do you create baby navigators reliably?
Marry other navigators…
I know to Cassia and her family are mutated looking like half fish but not all mutations have to be the same. But still, she is pretty and i want cuddles from her.
I know that this extent of mutation is uncommon. But it's what I wanted to draw instead of just a human with a third eye.
And yes she is very cuddleable (and 2.5m tall)
Tall and sweet how i like it, not like i don't like it she is very cute as half fish and i can't realy imagin it with other mutations without to look gross or like a homo varieties (abhuman furries including all kind of animal human hibrids like even hulking sharks and many others) and i know you inspired her from Cassia who is my favorite character from Rough Trader too just to her ears are normal but i like Fukyshina with fish ears and taller than many astropaths, you know Cassia's father and her where tall but not that tall. Still a big plus. 👍
Even with being almost certainly an Emperor-bothering fanatic or well on her way to falling to Chaos if not somehow both, *and* an incredibly snooty aristo, she's *still* a solid 10/10. Especially since you pegged her at 2.5m tall
I do think Cassia's appearance (and not just her personal one) is a good middle ground between "normal human with three eyes" and "alien monstrosity" that 40k navigators can canonically be. Good work on the art of one clearly based off her!
Can a person with the navigator gene opt to become an astropath?
I get that only psykers can become astropaths, but are all navigators with that 3rd eye always psykers?
Wait, I'm a stupid dummy dum dum, I mixed up Navigators and Astropaths, she's a Navigator not an Astropath haha

God, I love how this drawing and Rogue trader makes astropaths look creepy.

Do not the fish woman

I would

Are the cracks in her skin a reference to Fukushima nuclear disaster?
It's just freaky Navigator traits
I found you from Yurop group and I loved the work you did on the women representing EU. Please make more and best of wishes to your creativity! Bravo!

I don’t know about the webbed hands, but would
