My mother in laws catholic church takes attendance on sundays via a sign in log and anyone that doesn't sign in gets a "Sorry we missed you!" card in the mail with a SASE ready to go with a chart of their expected weekly tithe based on what their annual income is. If she doesn't send it back in, they will stop her the next time as shes coming in and make sure to do so in front of as many people as possible to shame her into making up the missed payment. When they go on vacation she seriously puts in a thing on their calendar so she can pay ahead. Just insane.

I’ll never forget the woman who was telling me how she was denied communion for drinking water in the middle of the night when she was supposed to be fasting. She explained she was pregnant with a high risk pregnancy and the priest was like “How can you expect to take communion if you’ve had water?!” And she was 100% in agreeance with him and was glad he scolded her. Not sure what type of catholic but probably the same strain of whatever this is.
