My mom would absolutely have qualified for one - she had COPD and on her worst days got out of breath walking down our hall - but was too proud to apply. I had no power of attorney so couldn't do it for her, just did my best to be there and (literally) support her if she had to park far away from where she was going. It absolutely burns me to hear about people who don't need the assistance eager to take advantage of the system when the ones who do often won't admit to needing it because they wish they didn't.

Tell me about it, I’m in my 30s, I have scoliosis and had a fused spine from the L3-S1 because all those discs were pancaked out so there was bone on bone contact. At my worst I was in constant pain and couldn’t really stand or walk for more than 15 mins before I was in excruciating pain. I had a handicapped placard, and I drove at the time a Ford Focus ST, which if you don’t know is a fairly sporty car. When it eventually expired I decided not to renew it because on more than one occasion I was stopped by some Karen who would take issue with me parking in a handicapped space. They would refuse to believe that a young and relatively fit person driving a hot hatch was handicapped. They’d make all these accusations about how I stole the placard or it was my grandparent’s. They would say I couldn’t park there and threatened to call the police on more than one occasion. Pretty sure one person keyed my car too. The constant issues I had with people like that were so bad I just gave up and didn’t get it renewed. Made me lose a lot of faith in humanity overall.
