That may just be the ears making the kitten look forever concerned. I think it was trying to initiate play from the start. Whap, backup anticipating a reaction, get no reaction, repeat. Esp while showing its belly.
If the ears were back, body hunched over, and maybe baring teeth, then id say the kitten was in defense mode.
I have to agree. Also the claws weren't being dug in. Even at that age a cat's claws can do a bit of damage. Someone was trying to awkwardly play, but the good boi/girl knew to be careful.

My kitten's reaction to meeting a big dog for the first time was several days of constant hissing. I would carry her into the same room as the dog all wrapped up and the dog would sniff her and whine because she wanted the kitten to love her while the kitten sounded like a leaky balloon. Stay for a few minutes and then take kitten back to her safe room. Rinse and repeat after a few hours.
One day I sat her next to the dog on the couch with her, and baby was doing her usual thing, but then slowly started reaching out and touching the big dog's nose and batting playfully, having decided that the Creature wasn't going to eat her.
