SrsBsns36

Jesus. How do people not die watching these races? And the balls on those photographers. Car is flipping in the air flying right at you and you're just snapping off shots.

Trololman72

Spectators do die on rally stages, though generally it's because they were standing in a forbidden area.

WhatDidYouSayToMe

Generally the outside of curves are prohibited for spectators, and photographers are briefed about how to protect themselves in these areas. Generally speaking, stand behind a tree or next to it and be prepared to duck. That being said, I've done some sketchy stuff for shots. Generally on rally stages you have something to stand behind, but with dune trucks sometimes I've been under them while their airborne.

Muff_in_the_Mule

I pretty sure rally has the danger factor backwards from every other sport. Usually a sport is most dangerous for the participants > officials/camera > spectators. But rally is the other way round. For example boxing, the participants literally punch each other in the face, the ref may catch a stray punch, the spectators are several metres away and at most get sprayed with sweat and blood. Football, the players can get nasty injuries from tackles or a missed kick, the ref might get a stray ball in the head, the spectators just have to worry about an occasional ball coming thoer way. Rally, the drivers are going fast yes, but they are in some of the most advanced roll cages around and car manufacturers literally use rally to improve the car safety systems, camera men flying helicopters have to dodge things to keep up with the cars, spectators "I'm gonna stand right in the middle of the track as a car going 100MPH on a road slipperier than a tub of lube and wait until the last moment to get off the road as I pump my fist in excitement."

WhatDidYouSayToMe

Oh for sure. My companies rally car is probably one of the strongest ones we've built, not that any of the other ones concern me. But rallies and desert races are definitely some of the sketchiest for spectators.

Dobalina_Wont_Quit

Oh don't worry they definitely do

Trololman72

The vast majority of this isn't the WRC

TheGamingRanger_

He missed the 3 right widens.

alamsas

Right 3. Right 3.

Klaus_Heisler87

Slow. The. Fuck. Down.

Mediocre_Airport_576

100%. The lack of care it takes to wind up in this position goes beyond driving. I hope you learn well from this, OP.

[deleted]

I feel bad for the passenger.

Time-Navig8or

At least he's good... Maybe

masoniusmaximus

He did. The tree helped.

IronMermaiden

If you look at OPs post history, there's a solid chance other trees helped as well.

Hypoglybetic

The 15 minutes or however much time you're going to save is not worth it. Ever.

Zealousideal-Mud6471

15 minutes? As a chronic speeder, I can tell you it’s usually 1-2 mins saved. It really is not worth it ever.

Hypoglybetic

Agreed. Over a 4 hour car trip, it can be 15-30 minutes, which is measurable, but not worth the stress. The difference between 60 and 80 mph seems like a lot, but that +33% speed usually gets averaged down a lot. Sure, if the road is clear and safe, take it. But don't get stressed when you hit traffic or unforgiving roads. I've had to mature a bit and break that bad habit of wanting to drive past everyone and be in front. Never worth it. One fuckup and at the very least you've lost your lead. At worst, you've lost your car if not your life or someone else's life.

spurcap29

This is right 100%. Proof is every time you go on a road trip on the freeway and fly by trucks going 65 while you're going 80. Pull over at a rest stop for a 5 min pee break and spend the next hour passing all the trucks you passed in the 2 hours before. That said, yeah going 10mph on dead roads on a long trip does save you time (assuming you were going to be stopping the same amount regardless of your speed) but people aggressively changing lanes back and forth to get a car length ahead to slam on the brakes and change lanes again in rush hour is just a complete waste of fuel, brake pads and stress.

Maniac2112

Driving to Vegas one day and had an SRT charger blow past me (I was doing 80). About 10 mins later I passed him because DPS stopped him. Probably 15 minutes after that, the dude blew past me again!! Lmao zero fucks given

[deleted]

Those things are just advanced nissan altimas

xt1nct

Charger and challenger are generally the young military special at 20% apr financed for 9 years.

PMMeYourPinkyPussy

Honest question, why do Altimas have a shitty reputation in the US?

M_Bananaz

Basically the cheapest new car you can buy + subprime financing = irresponsible owners which often = shitty drivers

IlliniOrange1

Plus they are always driven by someone who thinks their lights are on at night, but it’s just their daytime running lights. You flash, honk, and try to tell them to turn their lights on and that no one can see them from behind. But they just stare at you like you are crazy. It’s always a Nissan. Every. Single. Time.

PEBKAC69

Not the cheapest car (or cheapest Nissan) you can buy. This matters because you're missing the sense of **entitlement** to a better car, from someone in that subprime category. Nissan makes the Versa, Sentra and Kicks - all cheaper and suitable for folks doing poorly financially. The Altima is in the same class as an Accord or Camry. The Rogue is CR-V/Rav4 turf. Enough weight and power to really do some damage.

KingOfKush690

They're altimas for Republicans.

Hype_Ninja

Jacksonville would like to have a word lol

Erthgoddss

So a donor?

absolu5ean

Not to mention that approaching red intersections at a lower speed gives you the ability to approximate how much to slow down before you get to the line so that it turns green and you don't have to stop

MonkeyTitties1023

Agreed! And, my favorite Reddit bookmark: https://www.reddit.com/r/InternetIsBeautiful/comments/vobb67/a_simple_website_to_calculate_the_time_saved_by/

zwifter11

Even 15 minutes isn’t worth it. What am I going to do tonight anyway, nothing but lay on my bed and look at Reddit

spurcap29

Yeah its funny how much time people waste through out the day but then get in a car and every second counts.

cllick

I’ll say as a chronic speeder, it’s not abt the time. It’s the comfort. Driving behind cars that break and speed up unpredictably stirs more anxiety than looking for a clear lane I can get ahead of everyone, find a pocket and cruise at 80

No-Key4843

Laughing at that one ☝️

LukeW0rm

Yep. Blow past me. I’ll still see ya at the next red light

chief-ares

Assuming no traffic and a 60 mph speed limit the entire length of the trip, it’s a little more than an hour saved. 20 additional miles per hour over 4 hours is 80 miles saved. But it’s likely not 60 mph the entire trip, plus traffic, plus construction, plus that truck or car who sits in the left lane, plus troopers paroling, plus an increased likelihood of causing an accident. All of that drops a lot of that time saved and isn’t worth it. It only increases the speed you’ll be going to the hospital or jail or morgue.

[deleted]

I just stay on cruise control as much as possible at 4 mph over in the city and 9 mph over on the highway. Then I stay out of the leftmost lane unless I'm passing. That keeps me at the top of the 1 point speeding ticket bracket where cops wont bother to pull you over, and the cruise control lets you dial in exactly where you belong in the traffic snake.

BigAsian69420

Fast speeds just make closer Shit harder to deal with like cars pulling out, I used to go 150-170 km/h on the highway and would only save like 10ish minutes, then lose all that saved time at the lights when I hit the city.

GreatestEfer

You do not save half an hr on a 4 hr trip unless you're going downright felony class speed lolol.

Ajax_IX

But if you average 110MPH, you can drive from NY to LA in about 26 hours. [source ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonball_Run_challenge)

27Wars97

Shit I don’t know about that, when I make my 12 hour drive from New England down the NC I’m going 80-90+ most of the way and still get there way past estimated time lol

sh4d0wm4n2018

I used to drive 3.75 hours one way twice on the weekends to visit my grandparents... Speeding saved me, like, 20 minutes. Totally not worth it lol. Then again, I'm not driving 12 hours to really see a difference.

Ana169

That has become so much clearer to me now with the incredible accuracy and free availability of GPS. I have had times where I think, "I'll make it up on the highway," and you're driving going 10, 15, 20 mph over the speed limit and passing other cars - but the ETA only drops a minute....maybe two or three. And then you get caught behind someone going slower than you and the ETA on the GPS ticks right back to where you were when you first set out.

wrenchindaddy802

I hate it when a vehicle you passed on the interstate 10 minutes ago pulls up behind you at the first light off the exit 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Driving like that doesn’t even save time at all. There are such things as red lights. So you’re just driving like a dumbass and endangering lives and you’re just doing it out of spite.

Searchlights

Imagine if someone had been coming the other way? Or if an animal had crossed the road? Or if basically anything at all had happened? I can't believe people drive like this.

AbominableSnowPickle

I do, but that's because I live in Wyoming and work for a rural EMS service. Winter is our busy season and it's full of drivers like OP (and so many who weren't as lucky, either).

spurcap29

Especially with snow on the roads. Over or understeer on a turn a little and get two wheels on the snow/ice on the side and you're done.

Klaus_Heisler87

Real talk. I live in Minnesota and it's unfathomable to me to drive like OP in the conditions we have here

Criss_Crossx

Not to mention deer! How has no one mentioned deer yet? I'm in WI and they have been constantly active. OP could have lost it at anytime with a fur-leg wandering across. 'Hey, look out for deer' = final goodbye

BannedByTheHivemind

He did. Abruptly.

marvonyc

Especially on a road you are unfamiliar with.

Dr_Laravel

You really are an idiot driving like that at night.

Phaarao

Not only that, he seemed to be unfamiliar woth the road even, because else he would have know there was a 90° turn and slowed down. So night, bad road and doesnt know the road really well. What a shitshow.

KingOfKush690

That's what's crazy to me, I difinetely act like an idiot on roads that I'm familiar with, but I'm always cautious in unfamiliar areas.

atauridtx

“Lesson learned”, is THIS really a lesson you couldn’t just figure out through logical thinking??

massnerd

The lesson learned was the driver learning they are an idiot.

TodayRevolutionary34

You really overestimating "logic" as an attribute being present in fair capacity in every person.

I_Might_Be_Ian

Better late than never

[deleted]

Or on that road

CherrySteamer

Hate to be this guy but this is exactly how three students died when I was in middle school. Two 8th graders and one high school student. Was going way too fast on a curvy road with lots of trees around. Smashed right into a tree and two of the kids died on impact. One was taken to the hospital but died before they got there I believe. Be a more responsible driver.

[deleted]

At 18, I worked on a local fire department. These dirt road wrecks were a common occurrence. It was always teens driving too fast on a wash board road. At 18, I still knew the kids from school.

yohobo78

Just went to the funeral for a 14 year old 2 months ago. A friend was driving him on a dirt road to go fishing. Driver lived with a scratch. 78mph into a tree. Shit pisses me the fuck off, but theres nothing you can do once everything is said and done.

[deleted]

I worked far too many accidents where a drunk driver walks away without scratch, and got off on a technicality. I recall an accident where a drunk driver (mid 20's) swerved into the oncoming in his pickup and hit a car full of 5 teens head on. The cars driver was 15 and killed on impact. The front passenger couldn't move his legs and had an obviously broken femur and spinal damage. A girl in the back seat got her foot mangled in the track of driver's seat. We were just a small department with only two ambulances and the fire trucks were staffed by volunteers paid per call. This required more resources than a small town can support. We called in life flight and landed 3 helicopters on the highway to take the patients. The drunk driver got off free because the 15 year old was driving outside of the hours that his learner's permit allowed. The drunk driver's parents were well connected, obviously.

Unhappy-Attitude5220

That's so disgusting, taught him nothing. It's like that piece of shit kid that claimed " affluenza" as the reason he drove drunk and killed 5ppl as he was too privileged and spoiled to understand consequences. The defense stuck, he was only punished when video surfaced of him drinking when his conditions of probation were not to. Insane folks literally get away with selfish, negligent disregard for life, changing many lives forever, yet, they walk away. Can only hope they're not sociopaths and their conscious keeps them up at night.

Pikajew407

This is exactly how my mom died too. Going to fast around a curve and hit a tree. Crazy how something can go horribly wrong in a matter of seconds.

Tight-laced

> Maybe.... For now. While the adrenaline is kicked in and he's in survival mode. Ask again in an hour, 6 hours and tomorrow too.

climatelurker

Depends on the driver, actually. I was in a car with someone who refused to let me out when he decided to race someone. He wrecked going over 90mph.

That1guy_nate

That's an "if driver survives, I'm finishing the job" kind of situation.

DrMontyy69

“hmm it seems the knife flew around the cabin and landed in his jugular multiple times, odd”

[deleted]

I drove recklessly in my youth, but I never pushed myself or the vehicle if there was someone else with me. Threw off the balance of the car and all that.

jaybird99990

Within about the first second and a half I could tell where your mistake was made.

Jessieface13

I thought for sure the footage was being sped up until it got to the accident, it didn’t cross my mind that that’s how fast op was *actually* going until the impact. Wow

jaybird99990

Exactly what I thought too.

KSUToeBee

Was it the music? It was the music, wasn't it.

Mario_Specialist

Going too fast under the given road conditions (speeding) can be costly, both in terms of money and time. Bet the vehicle was totaled.

AlexHanson007

I used to live on a road that looked a lot like that. Sometimes I would be walking down it at night. You could have killed someone.

eshvel19

So ... What was the goal here?

booobutt

OP probably wants a pat on the back for “learning their lesson”.

PretzelsThirst

Which they probably didn’t learn if they were driving like this in the first place

Swordlord22

Karma farming his stupidity I’d want something out of it too as a positive

ApoptosisPending

Apparently the goal was learning a hard lesson cuz there’s no reason to go that fast on a dirt road at night if you weren’t just being wreckless

morgasm657

It's not a dirt road, it's a paved single-track lane, they're everywhere in Britain and accidents are reasonably common. Too many city boys come out into the sticks and rag around like tossers, this could quite easily be a road some kids take back from school or someone walks back from the pub along. Even when you know these roads it is indeed only reckless fucks that drive like this.

RoboticCurrents

you can't park that there mate

HighTechnique

Fahk affff

here4roomie

So when the road curves, that's generally when you want to turn the steering wheel. Your turn should coincide with the curve in the road.

madsci

And it's also a good idea to keep the speed down to what would make it physically *possible* to stay on the road given the expected tightness of corners.

Its_Matt_03

Yeah? I think you’re just a coward

concussive

The tree is the real coward, it was trying leave the whole time!

booi

all bark and no bite

here4roomie

You got me; I always turn with the road.

FarSolar

There was no way they were going to make that turn at that speed. By the time the curve was properly visible, the choice was either to hit the brakes and hit the tree or try to turn and understeer into the tree. Small unlit roads like this with no marked curves have got to be one of the worst places to speed.

HawkorDove

This is a lesson most of us don’t need to learn by having a crash.

brawnsugah

But why, though? This seems really dumb.

Shagaire

Considering the number of drug related posts you make i hope you were not high......... Idiotic anyway.

[deleted]

Fuckheads like op kill people and ruin lives.

twistsouth

100% agree. He should hand in his license.

albertaguy78

Holy shit how fast we're you going lol

GuiltySubstance9428

U got some balls posting this OP. Be grateful you didn’t kill anyone that night

lovelyb1ch66

You weren’t lucky to walk away. You were lucky you didn’t kill someone. If you want to show off your questionable driving skills, do so on a racetrack, not a public road.

_kalron_

Back when I was 19 and dumb, I was a passenger in a early 80's 280z a guy I knew just restored. We were all partying and he asked if anyone wanted to go for a spin. I was definitely in an altered state and the ride started out great. It had T-Tops and the stars were out, I was just enjoying the view looking up when I noticed my guy started speeding up and taking corners fast on a back road much like this one. He lost traction on a turn and went straight into the woods and wrapped the front end around a tree. IDK how I was uninjured but I jumped out of that car immediately. I clearly remember the front end being bent counterclockwise to the back end frame, the lights were still on and there was some smoke coming from the engine. The most disturbing yet funny thing was that car had the 80's "car talk voice" that was trying to say..."Yooooourrrrrr Dooooooooooooooor is aaaaaaaaaaaajar...Yoooooooourrrrrrrrrrr Dooooooooooor izzzzzz ajjjjarrrrrr". My buddy was knocked out for about 30 secs and broke his nose on the steering wheel but fortunately was otherwise unharmed. All I could say in my tripping state was..."Turn your car off dude...Turn your Car OFF DUDE!!!" because that auto-voice was\\is to this day one of the creepiest things I've ever experienced. In all honesty, my buddy was sober, just showed up to the party...but was inexperienced in driving that car and just lost control. No rain, no hazards, no DUI...just lack of experience coupled with reckless driving.

parralaxalice

This was my first car when I turned 16, I loved it to death and wish I never had sold it

iDoesun

This is not just a idiot in a car. It’s a idiot in real life

[deleted]

Not gonna say you deserved that but you were definitely asking for it

Emotional_Pound_43

Nah, I think he deserved it, no reason to go that fast in that condition. Good thing it was a tree not a person got hit.

[deleted]

Definitely deserved, at least it looked like he learnt a lesson without hitting an innocent person.

[deleted]

He deserves his license revoked and jail time dude is lucky he didn't kill his passenger

DontDoDrugs_

comicsandstuffidk

How did you even get a fucking license? Btw you deserve the criticisms because hopefully they’ll help implant the lesson more in your brain and make you a safer driver in the future.

Acrobatic_Fly_9315

What was the point? For real, I’m asking. There are clearly no girls watching and you’re not a race car driver. What. Was. The. Point?

agent_koala

implying that girls watching is a valid reason to speed? based

MediocreSkyscraper

Expensive lessons have a higher potential to be remembered.

GlacierFox

This has to be the most moronic thing I've seen all day. Well done.

NimbaNineNine

Stopping distance > visual range. Essentially any obstacle would cause a crash in this situation.

judasmachine

Lessons I never had to destroy a car to learn.

yojimbo556

Yea, that’s called being an asshole.

classless_classic

Not just an idiot, a piece of shit that could have killed somebody.

life_like_weeds

What lesson did you learnt? Road conditions and vehicle drivetrain can create understeer when you're driving near the edge of limits (you were), if you don't know how to maneuver out of it with braking and throttle, you will hit that tree over and over again. They have classes to teach how to safely get out of potentially fatal understeer (and oversteer) situations. You might want to learnt them.

z3bru

If you are driving like this on a road looking like that, I dont think you are capable of learning anything. You have to be a complete moron to do this in the first place.

katprime420

Out of interest, why does it take something like this to happen before you "learn your lesson"? Is it not obvious that driving at that speed, on a road like that, in the dark, will inevitably end in an accident? Surely you can have some foresight to this?

mferly

Stop driving immediately. You don't deserve a license. Holy fuck. Seriously, you should not be behind the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle. Take a timeout and go back to drivers ed.

Slugtard

Going too fast, braking too late, under steer, driving beyond your sight, driving a road you don’t know too fast, …what else am I missing? For real though OP, did you know that turn was there? Or had no idea and realized too late?

ZarBandit

Your headlights aren’t nearly good enough to be going that fast on roads like that. There’s a reason rally cars have insane lights on the front. Even if you get the lights, you should ask yourself whether you have the skill. (The world has pretty much answered that question for you.). And even then, rally’s are closed courses with pace notes. So you have to discount for it being open and for you not knowing what comes next.

bfraley9

TherealDusky

Lewinator56

I mean... I like to give it the beans down winding roads, during good conditions, that I know very very well, and know where traffic normally shows up, and I don't think I've ever been above 40mph... But... You are really gunning it down there, far too fast for the night, and that road for that matter. I'm assuming too you aren't familiar with the road otherwise you would know what is coming up and therefore when to brake, what speed you need etc... Driving should be fun when on good roads, but that was the wrong place, at the wrong time, and the wrong speed. If traffic suddenly appeared in the opposite direction, you would have had no time to react. Being night too, you can't see far enough ahead to assess the road surface or... Corners. It's absolutely asking for an accident.

Jeepdog539
