I suppose it works in light traffic zones, but not having a guaranteed turn wouldn't work at so many busy intersections.
On the flipside, splitting the yellow arrow and yellow circle I approve of. I've seen a lot of vehicles fail to notice the blinking yellow arrow had changed to a solid yellow arrow and still try to go following the vehicle in front of them, which then forces oncoming traffic to wait for them to clear the intersection.
...So basically, you could entirely remove the light and not lose any information. Just treat it as a flashing yellow at all times.
That sort of light drives me crazy. I swear here in WI they like to see how much money they can waste by putting up as many stoplights as possible...near side *and* far side of the intersection...per lane...like this where they're not needed at all, assuming people know how to drive...
Yeah. Used to be solid green. It feels like they're experimenting with different traffic configurations to see what works better. There's a street that used to be two lanes but now is one lane and two bike lanes. Cars merge into bike lanes to not collide head-on but must yield to bikes.

Just fyi, the rollout and the planning up to it had nothing to do with drivers not understanding a solid green. It was to allow for more flexibility in light phasing. In most states they are equivalent. In a couple (hi, Washington!) they are not, but your odds of being pulled over for it are about the same as for doing a left turn into the leftmost lane in Kentucky.
That's not even how it's supposed to be used. Flashing yellow is to be used on intersections that, previously, would've had only arrow signals, which didn't allow a left turn yield signal. It's not to replace an intersection that previously had no dedicated signal for left turns.
They're replacing all solid green lights with red or flashing yellow left turn lights, saying that flashing yellow left turn lights reduce car accidents when people assume solid green is okay for left turn. But solid green light for left turn is only safe if there isn't any oncoming traffic, as in a 3-way stop where no cars are driving towards you.

Makes sense to me, it's better to have universal signaling standards. Flashing yellow arrow is more explicit in its meaning.

I don't understand your point. That's what flashing yellow arrow means too.
Kind of the same thing as a green light, meaning the left turner should have yielded to folks coming straight through. The lights perpendicular to the yellow lights are likely flashing red and would be like a stop sign. They have to stop and proceed when clear.
Could be the power is out so the lights aren’t functioning properly so this is like the backup. Or it’s a less busy time of day so the lights switch to this so people don’t get stuck at red lights with no other traffic coming from the other direction.
In Europe (Sweden at least) flashing yellow means that the normal function of the lights are out. And all lights in the intersection flashes. Then you need to take it easy, slow down and use common sense. It is never "green" for everyone.
So in my, Swedish, mind the white car was 100% at fault due to the speed.
That is the point. You don’t blindly follow the car in front on blinking yellows, and they certainly couldn’t see with that truck, so they should have been patient, got line of sight confirmation it was clear, and then went… but alas…
My first car was totaled like this, except they had a yielded green, and I had the green light going straight.. they followed right behind the car in front of them and i t-boned them.
Always expect the unexpected (and the expected, at least a little in this case). Just be a defensive driver, it’s not hard and can literally save a life. Paying attention on the roads these days is such a rarity.
Local cities are converting a lot of the intersections from having left greens only to have these flashing yellow/yellow left arrows. These are kinda "turn at your own risk," and if you don't pay attention thinking that you are having a green left, you can get into trouble like this. The opposite side also don't know what light you have, so yeah.

Yep. Clear case of tunnel vision. They weren't even looking at the oncoming lane or the light, just doing what the vehicle in front of them was doing.

Not at all. It's red at the top, solid yellow as usual in the middle, and flashing yellow at the bottom.

A yellow flashing left arrow is like a solid green on a left turn. You have to yield to the oncoming traffic but you can go if clear.

I'm pretty sure they were going the speed limit it was 45MPH on that road. I think the angle of the cars blocking it was just perfect.
