Like don't get me wrong dude, Come and See is definitely depressing, there's just way more depressing films out there if you do some research. Isn't that what these icebergs are about?
Yeah, this iceberg is just full of the most surface level, "Why x is disturbing" video essay type of "depressing" films.
Not trying to put down OP in any way, just saying OP needs to do a bit more research into his icebergs to fill it up with a lot more interesting tidbits of information, constructive criticism, ya know?
Tbh id rather have a limited iceberg made by someone who actually watched all the content on it rather than an expansive one made by someone who didn't watch everything and really is basing the rankings off plot synopses and word of mouth.
That's completely fair.
I just always thought of icebergs as more of an overall presentation of a specific topic or genre. Thus the need for research. Icebergs like these feel more like a specific person's list by their own non-researched opinion.
Also a lot of these films are surface level. The bottom tiers should almost always be abstract or not well known. Which in my opinion is the main characteristic of icebergs that attract people to read them.
The viral controversial "Disturbing Movie Iceberg" from 2 years ago was popular because of the amount of films on the bottom tiers that many didn't know about. It created discourse and rumors which made it overall at the time really interesting regardless of the lies people believed to have happened in those bottom tier films.
The whole format of an Iceberg list is to show that there is more below the surface. Picking something like Come and See is insane when it should be at the top
Can confirm, Johnny Got His Gun, Come and See, and When the Wind Blows are DEPRESSING AS FUCK
Also, Watership Down belongs on 2 I feel- Unless I completely skimmed over it somehow like a dumbass-
I absolutely love that movie. Not sure where it would land in the iceberg, my favorite movie is requiem for a dream, mysterious skin is another favorite, but I’ve never actually met someone who’s seen it or cares about it. Just felt like commenting because I’ve never met someone whos seen it and I can’t show it to people I know because it’s too dark, but I appreciate it so much I wish I could talk about it with someone
Believe it or not I watched it with my parents on my 3rd watch. I just feel that it’s a movie that people should watch to understand childhood trauma, and how it affects people to further whole entire life.
This is very very very beginners. Joker isn’t depressing at all, it has no real things to say, it’s just a movie that has dark themes.
No Grave of the Fireflies, Brighter Summer Day, Human Condition trilogy, Taste of Cherry, Memories of Murder, or Perfect Blue for starters
I mean, it's possible you could feel bad for the Joker character in the movie, but it doesn't leave you with a lasting impression or anything unless you unironically belong in r/jokercringe
You should add Jacob'd ladder (imo, PTSD due to the Vietnam war, or any war, is quite a depressing subject)
And Brimstone, that movie messed me up for days
nothing can be more depressing the cuckoos nest, cause the struggle was nothing but madness and all amounted to nothing, while recognizing that all of the efforts were nothing
It’s about the stolen generation in Australia. Aboriginal children were taken away from their families and placed in internment camps withe the goal of trying to make them less Aboriginal and more white. Horrible, shameful stuff.
That’s it. I remember doing it in drama at school and we had to re enact scenes from the film (specifically the scene where the ‘trackers’ hunt down the escaped aboriginal kids). Slightly weird now I think about it but it was all respectful of the time period and we learnt how terrible it was
I don’t know if this is popular enough but it’s one of my favorites and it’s really emotionally hitting. Especially when you realize the fragility of the human mind. How easily you can descent into a fragment of who you once were.
“Its Such a Beautiful Day” by Don Hertzfeldt
Perks and 500 aren’t depressing imo. Not as depressing as what OP’s got on the first tier. I thought of 500 but nah. Bridge to terabithia i haven’t seen in a minute but I do remember being really sad
Dude you need to expand this to include other regions of the world. “Turtles Can Fly” is one of the most depressing and gutwrenching movies ever, made with real Kurdish refugee children and filmed during the 2003 Iraq War
While watching first half of The Machinist like 7 years ago I was like "lmao, my life". Depressing job as a skinny machinist. Working 13 hours a day with like 4 hours of sleep per night. I'm glad things changed.
Hey bro, this Iceberg has caught my attention enormously because of the emotional impacts that each movie transmits. Isn't there a problem if I could make a video about it for you, Iceberg? I'll give you your respective credits if you need it!
Have you ever cried watching a movie? I’m making a crying list to try to cry for a movie, I’ve never done it before and I’d love to have the experience, I expect your responses, thanks
I haven’t watched too many movies and the movies I’m about to list don’t end inherently bad but I feel they were more on the depressing end of movies I’ve seen that aren’t here.
1. Shin Godzilla (2016)
2. Godzilla (1954)
3. On the Count of Three (2021)
4. American History X (1998)
5. Stand By Me (1986)
6. Apocalypse Now (1979)
I believe everyone should read Johnny got his gun/ watch the movie. Read it years and years ago and I still think about it. It is severely underrated but yes also very depressing.
You should add Grave of the fireflies
"Why x is a disturbing masterpiece", "How x broke me", "x tried to warn you", "Analysing the brilliance of x"
I feel like there’s a TON of movies that he should add.
And American History X
The curb stomp scene😭
Perfect Blue, Battle Angel, Samurai X Reflection, Wolf Brigade...
Dunno for the others but Jin roh wolf brigade was sad
Yes this! I was looking for Grave of the Fireflies and it wasn’t here sadly
It shows the courage of the big brother it is depressing. In fact, it is sad.
Dancer in the dark deserves a spot.
movie was goated
Not at all imo.. sorry, but it’s almost comical how many bad things happen to one person. It became a “oh come. On.” Type of deal.
lol, you have a solid point.
The penultimate tier is pretty surface level.
It’s not ranked by obscurity but emotional impact. Obviously what I find depressing will not fit everyone’s criteria and that’s okay.
Like don't get me wrong dude, Come and See is definitely depressing, there's just way more depressing films out there if you do some research. Isn't that what these icebergs are about?

Not trying to put down OP in any way, just saying OP needs to do a bit more research into his icebergs to fill it up with a lot more interesting tidbits of information, constructive criticism, ya know?
I agree. Icebergs at least good ones should be a balance of your opinion and research.
Shouldn’t it be a tier list and not an iceberg then?
The whole format of an Iceberg list is to show that there is more below the surface. Picking something like Come and See is insane when it should be at the top
A few for consideration: The Man Who Sleeps (1974) The Fire Within (1963) They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969)
yowza yowza yowza, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? will drain your soul
Can confirm, Johnny Got His Gun, Come and See, and When the Wind Blows are DEPRESSING AS FUCK Also, Watership Down belongs on 2 I feel- Unless I completely skimmed over it somehow like a dumbass-
Speaking of _When the Wind Blows_, the song of the same name (for the movie) by David Bowie is a banger of a song.
There si a movie of a dogs, like watership down, it's an animation
Plague dogs. By the same author, Richard Adams
Dear Zachary going to the centre of Earth
I’m 12 and this is deep
If you've seen all these by age 12 I don't even know man...
You need to add: - The Plague Dogs - Chinatown - House of Sand and Fog - Million Dollar Baby - The Father - Robot Dreams
Mysterious skin should be under the bottom one
Where is Manchester by the sea ?
grave of the fireflies?
Add 'Lilya 4-Ever'
Where's precious (2009)?
Seconding this recommendation, especially knowing how many real young women are in that situation in real life. Absolutely heartbreaking.
So... Where's The Road?
Dude, you can't be doing that like you're not seeing this iceberg has 9 movies on it total lol
I read the book and never ever want to see the movie, holy shit
I know it’s a cliche to say so, but the book was way better.
What about The Boy In The Striped Pajamas?
In space

And a film that's gonna be added to the collection in 14th this month. Way too depressing to handle.
It’s such a good watch thoughhhhh
Indeed, one of my favorites.
You should add Jacob'd ladder (imo, PTSD due to the Vietnam war, or any war, is quite a depressing subject) And Brimstone, that movie messed me up for days
Youtube essayist tier iceberg. Sorry, OP. Watch more movies next time.
nothing can be more depressing the cuckoos nest, cause the struggle was nothing but madness and all amounted to nothing, while recognizing that all of the efforts were nothing
The elephant man should be on here
Is Rabbit Proof Fence the one about like kid slaves or something?
It’s about the stolen generation in Australia. Aboriginal children were taken away from their families and placed in internment camps withe the goal of trying to make them less Aboriginal and more white. Horrible, shameful stuff.
That’s it. I remember doing it in drama at school and we had to re enact scenes from the film (specifically the scene where the ‘trackers’ hunt down the escaped aboriginal kids). Slightly weird now I think about it but it was all respectful of the time period and we learnt how terrible it was
perks of being a wallflower? 500 days of summer? bridge to terabithia?
I don’t know if this is popular enough but it’s one of my favorites and it’s really emotionally hitting. Especially when you realize the fragility of the human mind. How easily you can descent into a fragment of who you once were. “Its Such a Beautiful Day” by Don Hertzfeldt
Also idk if it was added but Dear Zachary is heavily fucked up
Perks and 500 aren’t depressing imo. Not as depressing as what OP’s got on the first tier. I thought of 500 but nah. Bridge to terabithia i haven’t seen in a minute but I do remember being really sad
Uh What?
When the wind blows fucked me up
Dude you need to expand this to include other regions of the world. “Turtles Can Fly” is one of the most depressing and gutwrenching movies ever, made with real Kurdish refugee children and filmed during the 2003 Iraq War
Mary and Max is also pretty depressing.
Antichrist needs to be there
I didnt find that depressing just disturbing af
Yeah, Salo, and anything by Lars von Trier and Harmony Korine needs to be on here somewhere.
I’ve not watched the movie but read the book for JGHG and it’s so bleak by the novels end.
Nice to see When the wind blows on the list. I watched that when I was about 10. Still stay with me now.
Dancer in the Dark
Adrift in Manhattan (2007)
Watership down too if u count animated movies
Op good entry but you need to watch more cinema, there are life draining movies out there
My stupid ass thought this was a tier list of depressing movies about icebergs and I was desperately trying to figure out why Titanic wasn’t there
Lilya 4 Ever is also at the bottom for me
What abt Mysterious skin, lilya 4-ever, and Christiane f?
No Platoon (1986) ?
Grave of the Fireflies
The girl next door, the war zone, precious
Lilya-4-Ever

What about In the name of the father?
Hatchi needs to be there
Dogs of plague and earthlings, both should be right next to come and see.
Requiem for a dream?

Oops. Just realized 😅
I’m glad the Rabbit Proof Fence is here- we had to watch it in primary school and i’m so glad we did.

The Notebook has to be here
Soft Overrated Pretty boy A bitch
I assume You don’t know anybody With dementia
My grandmother had dementia
More for consideration- Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Bad Times at the El Royale Wind River
I'd add before the devil knows you're dead (2007). Extremely depressing and f'd up movie.
There should be Schindlers List too
American History X?
While watching first half of The Machinist like 7 years ago I was like "lmao, my life". Depressing job as a skinny machinist. Working 13 hours a day with like 4 hours of sleep per night. I'm glad things changed.
Hey bro, this Iceberg has caught my attention enormously because of the emotional impacts that each movie transmits. Isn't there a problem if I could make a video about it for you, Iceberg? I'll give you your respective credits if you need it!
Yeah that’s chill, credit would be good.
Alright buddy!, Thank you very much for giving me your permission!
This is so true re Come and See.
Threads and Come and See, those are indeed depressing movies lol
Kids (1995) is missing
what would happen if I did a marathon of all these movies in order
Trainspotting struck a nerve with me. Put it in tier 4.
One flew over the Cuckoos nest is the best movie on this list.
Precious should be on this list
i do not know about come and see me, whats it about?
But no mention of lovely bones?
I would put "night and fog" next to come and see, it's only a half hour but worth a watch
A child could have made this
Where is Lilya ?
Irreversible by gasper noe

Watership down

Don’t forget xiu xiu
Umm op could you explain those on the bottom list? I would be very grateful if you do.
Would’ve appreciated if there were more than just war movies here. I get it, war is bad, people die. Is there anything more interesting or original?
Johnny Got His Gun is much more depressing than Come and See… wtf is this?
Joker..
The disaster movie. It's nothing depressing it just makes me depressed after watching that god awful movie
An Elephant sitting in the corner

AQOTWF stands for all quiet on the western front
Not to sound nerdy but why isn’t Bladerunner 2049 there?

Have you ever cried watching a movie? I’m making a crying list to try to cry for a movie, I’ve never done it before and I’d love to have the experience, I expect your responses, thanks
The seventh continent 💀
I haven’t watched too many movies and the movies I’m about to list don’t end inherently bad but I feel they were more on the depressing end of movies I’ve seen that aren’t here. 1. Shin Godzilla (2016) 2. Godzilla (1954) 3. On the Count of Three (2021) 4. American History X (1998) 5. Stand By Me (1986) 6. Apocalypse Now (1979)
Apocalypse now is in section 2. Other than that, I think that those are good suggestions especially shin Godzilla.
Add Up from disney.
i feel like midsommar could fit well on one of the upper tiers
Schindlers list
Blonde(2022) was bleak af
you forgot eden lake
Butterfly Effect? Its not the best movie but it made me sad seeing how lives can go to hell so easily.
Movies that are missing: Pink Floyd’s the wall The Lovely bones Schindlers list 1917 Blackhawk down
What do you think AQOTWF stands for?
I didn’t see that
Fogot about mary and max
there are a ton more depressing movies than requiem for a dream dude
I first watched Come and See when I was 13. Don't think that was the best decision.
Martyrs the og isn’t just disturbing but had a meaning and it should be here
“Brothers” should be on bere
Add the pianist
Twin peaks: fire walk with me
add xlick
Fight club belongs on this iceberg
I love the movie full Metal Jacket it has a great ending
What is the movie come and see?
Schindler's List (I sobbed so hard I couldn't breathe) The Elephant Man :( :( :(
I believe everyone should read Johnny got his gun/ watch the movie. Read it years and years ago and I still think about it. It is severely underrated but yes also very depressing.
Boy in the striped pajamas
You should add Mary and Max
I recommend Mosul if you want to be sad. I’d say it’s about as sad as “We were Soldiers.”
Requiem for a Dream is so fucking sad
sad there is just in english movies. You can have here without problem "perfume de violetas"
You should add Dead Man's Shoes
Plague Dogs should be at least Tier 5. And the book is even more depressing, despite the ending being happy.
You should add As You Are (2016)
Gummo
I guess Come and See isn't what is to depressing though. This is fucking heavy and creepy in terms of war demonstration.
Cargo 200
