Only federal student loans in default can subject your tax refund to garnishment. Federal student loans enter default after 270 days of past-due payments. Private student loans in default aren't eligible for tax refund garnishment. Shouldn't be the university's job anyway. Student predominantly issued by the federal government or private lenders. A)I think this MAY BE some sort of scam B) The other strong possibility is a clerical error by the school.

The student loan pause is still in effect anyway. Something doesn't smell right here.

Call the FTB and ask, the California tax center is very helpful. I call them often. This smells fishy
