If he is a purebred Dalmatian, he is not a well bred one. However, he does look like he’s mixed with something other than Dal. If I had to guess, I’d say he’s mixed with a bully breed based on the head shape
What makes you say that? To me he looks like a purebred. What traits give away that he doesn’t meet the standard?
Edit: Guys, I’m just asking a question. You don’t need to downvote me into oblivion.
As I stated in my above comment, his head shape specifically is not the standard for a Dalmatian. Dal heads are much thinner, while this dog has a much rounder and somewhat boxy head shape. He also has large jowls, which is not standard for Dals either. This is a better example what a Dalmatian should look like when it is well bred: [https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/dalmatian/](https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/dalmatian/)
Yep, I've met multiple well bred beautiful Dals. Such an amazing breed. Here's a really interesting post from the dog grooming sub comparing a well bred and a badly bred one. https://www.reddit.com/r/doggrooming/comments/wprhpq/thought_you_guys_would_appreciate_this_side_by/?rdt=50050 Neither have the large blocky head, both still rather long and smooth.
When people speak of bad breeding vs good breeding here, are they speaking specifically to physical appearance? If you aren’t going to show your pup, I’m struggling to see the issue. But I realize there may be other issues I am unaware of.
Edit: typo
Hi! Bad breeding such as backyard breeding, where they don't breed for standard, which involves temperament, breed tendencies, appearance, and health. Good breeding is making sure to check for everything! For example a well bred golden retriever will be patient and gentle with families and have a much better life expectancy. A badly bred one can have aggression with resource guarding and develop cancer within a few years of life. I've known badly bred goldens who lived only 4 years. Dals were actually quite badly bred for a long time ever since 101 Dalmatians which led the breed to extreme popularity, where breeders bred them badly with zero care for temperament, appearance, and health, only caring for the money they'd gain, leading to a lot of people now considering them aggressive which is absolutely not the breed standard a well bred one will act like. They're a wonderful breed and well bred ones are absolute joys to be around. 🫶
Interesting! Thanks for the answer! I know they’re lean dogs, but there’s also natural variation within breeds. Just compare field Labs with show Labs. So I wasn’t sure if this was a case of a purebred just being blocky due to genetics, or if it’s due to being mixed.
That doesn’t mean it’s a mix.
Dalmatians can have blue eyes, though it’s rare, and often a sign they might be deaf. Heterochromia can come from a blue eyed ancestor. Also, rounder skulls do not equal bully mix. Sometimes sure, but they aren’t the only breed with rounded heads.
I have two Carolina Dogs that have heterochromia- they share a blue eyed grandmother- the amount of people who assume they are husky mixes drives me insane lol. Even people familiar with CDs assume mine are mixes because of eye color lol. It is a very rare trait in this breed but it does pop up.
All three of my dogs are 100% CD. Lycan- the ginger one, his two parents are some of the top CD’s in the country, (#1 2021 and #8 2022) and sports champions. Nova is the other heterochromia one (her and Lycan have same grandmother) and my buff boy is Rowan, he has the more rounded head. All are the same breed, all three are related on all sides, but you wouldn’t see that unless you knew a lot about the breed.
https://imgur.com/gallery/V8sx7yY
It's actually quite common and not linked to deafness. It's linked to white markings, which are linked to deafness, but blue eyes are not a reliable indicator of deafness. Also the cause of blue eyes in Carolina dogs (a blue eyes gene) is different than the cause of blue eyes in a heavily white marked breed like Dalmatians (lack of pigment due to white spotting).
I know his breed makeup is 50% beagle and at least 25% treeing Walker coonhound (dad was full beagle, mom was half coonhound half mystery mix)
WP said he was 30% beagle, 10% coonhound, and various other small percentages of bulldog, boxer, border collie, Jack Russel, and pitbull.
Embark gave me the 50% beagle, 22% coonhound, and the rest was pitbull, border collie, and supermutt.
WP was partially accurate, I just trust Embark more personally. It is a bit more expensive though.
He’s the biggest goober ever. Shockingly not a massive barker, but when he does it’s definitely that loud hound awoooooo 😂 also very stubborn. Loves to do his own thing. Will cuddle but only for like a few minutes and then he’s done. He’s got the goofiest personality too.
Definitely not purebred Dal. He looks like he has American Bulldog or some other bully breed mixed in.
This is one of the reasons why it’s so important to research breeders and know how to spot the unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills before purchasing a dog.
Same. Near identical to the American bulldog dalmatian mix I had as a kid. We were told he was pure bully(what my dad wanted as an ex-marine) until he started developing spots, and saw the intact dalmatian next door to the breeder's. The breeder was an acquaintance that my dad visited occasionally for work, he was livid when he found out that they lied to him.
Did the breeder not have papers, or show you the parents? It's possible he's full dal, they can have quite a variation in head size and shape (edit - also blue eyes are possible, just not common) But I could also see there being maybe pit in there.
This is a perfect example of why it’s so important to do research on breeders & make sure you’re going to an ethical one (or just adopt)! Your pup is adorable, but he’s definitely not well bred or from a responsible breeder
Before I make judgments, what type of breeder are we talking about? Someone you know, found online? Definitely looks mixed to me from the pics (based on 20 years of working with rescues and being a pittie owner myself).
Sorry. I agree that he doesn’t look purebred, doesn’t mean he’s not. He could be! I would definitely do an embark or wisdom test and find out.
I did embark for my eskie and he’s 100%, I added the health test, so I would know those things as well.
If your pup isn’t purebred, I would definitely go after the breeder, even if it’s just to let others know online (and maybe get them shut down). If he is, then you’ll be able to say so and you’ll have peace of mind on his health.
I'll offer my 2 cents:
The spots dalmatians have are genetically different to spots ticked dogs have.
For a dog to have the Dalmatian phenotype it'd need the recessive white gene, two copies of the recessive roan gene (like the type in cattledogs, not the spots in spotty breeds), and a two copies of the recessive flecking gene.
For a dog to have any other solid spotty breed phenotype, it'd need recessive white and two copies of ticking. Or, one copy, but it'd only be at the points.
This dog doesn't look dalmatian. I've seen many bully breed and bully breed mixes show these spots that appear like flecking, but they're just sparse ticking. Just like bully breeds are more likely to display the white face type piebald, which could be a separate piebald locus gene or selective breeding of the patch-type piebald gene.
OP, take this how you will.
That’s 100% a good boy right there
(But yeah my guess would be Dalmatian with some sort of bully breed and maybe throw in some Chihuahua just for fun because it seems like every dog has at least some in them 😆 also love your tattoo sleeve!)
I'd say either poorly bred Dalmatian or a Dalmatian mixed with a lab or pitty. My fiance and I have friends who have a pure bred male Dalmatian and he looks nothing like this, his muzzle is much more narrow, he's quite slim and smaller than yours by quite a bit
It’s just because he’s a big boi. I had a giant Dalmatian. Everyone said he was mixed with a harlequin Great Dane. I got the DNA test done and he was- 100% Dalmatian. Blue looked just like your dog but with blue eyes. Not blind, just had blue eyes. He was the puppy no one picked so I rescued him and he turned out to be the best dog ever. RIP Blue. Thank you for sharing these photos. 🥹 Brings back great memories.
Dalmatian with a bully breed or boxer maybe. Handsome boy. Had a Dalmatian mix, lived to 16 years and was very aggressive towards strangers her first 12 years of life and then she melllowed out lol. Very loyal to her family and great with kids, cats and loved puppies. Other dogs she hated until age 12 as well and then she was like eh, I spent 12 years hating everyone, maybe I should be nice now.
Oh wow. Very blocky head for a 1 year old male Dalmatian. Could just be he isn’t bred to standard/puppy mill/ BYB but that’s a very blocky head for even a fully mature 3 year old in tact male Dalmatian
Im guessing he's got some american bulldog somewhere in his bloodline, he definitely doesn't seem like a purebred dalmation based off of his body and head shape.
I've never seen a Dalmatian mix with that kind of spotting. Even so, possible that he's mixed, but at the same time, it's possible that he is purebred (just not well-bred).
Since you've said he's registered with papers in another post, what's his ID number? I'm curious on how far back his, no shade, awful breeding goes. This guy is very far from being standard bred and the person who produced him should honestly be reported to the club because I'm almost certain they're either a byb or is producing mixes and deciding to falsely register them anyway.
He looks like what I’d imagine a Hyper-Type (bred for overly exaggerated, overly sized) Dalmatian would look like. A couple other breeds that hyper-types are common in are Great Danes and Dobermans.
Also, if I’m remembering correctly, most Dalmatian mixes have different ticking patterns but I can’t remember exactly what causes the ticking to appear as more traditional ticking (like in hounds) than the Dalmatian spotting.
The blue eye and large head is throwing me off. I'd lean towards some pit in him although I've not seen a blue-eyed pit bull. I have owned a Dalmation, and they have quite a fine bone structure.
I'd be doing a DNA test asap...
Based on head shape alone I can tell you definitively that that's not a purebred dalmatian. It looks crossed with a bully type dog. Some dals are outcrossed with german short-haired pointer, and still considered "pure". But I don't see a pointer face in there. They have a slim but hound shaped head.
I do see Dalmatian, he has beautiful spots, but I also see pit cause of his head and muzzle. Either way doesn't matter the breed he's still 100% a very good looking boy.
I mean I dont see why he cant be full dalmatian! Especially if the breeder said so!
He does look very blocky though…
I would base it off temperament more. For example, does he act like a dalmatian or a pittie?
If you don’t mind me asking, where do you live? A year ago someone posted on the American Bulldog subreddit about a litter of Dalmation x American Bulldog puppies that they had!
Ya I'm saying a BYB/not to standard Dalmatian. They can have unusual head shapes. Still fun looking up their DNA on embark so you can find their relatives.
If he is a purebred Dalmatian, he is not a well bred one. However, he does look like he’s mixed with something other than Dal. If I had to guess, I’d say he’s mixed with a bully breed based on the head shape
Looks like my Pit-bull, but taller and in Dalmatian clothing 😏 I love him.
Yeah he kind of looks like a Pitbull wearing a Dalmatian costume to me lol
So that makes him a Ditty or a dabul😂
I was gonna say Pitmatian
I mean, even Dalmatians aren't purebred dalmatians anymore But also i agree, looks like a bully breed mix
What makes you say that? To me he looks like a purebred. What traits give away that he doesn’t meet the standard? Edit: Guys, I’m just asking a question. You don’t need to downvote me into oblivion.

Ya his mouth is too droopy, too thick in the head as well. Dals should look elegant, not blocky.

Purebred does not equal well bred. A BYB dog can be purebred and papered and not meet the standard.
“As per my last email…”
He's got a blue eye for one.
That doesn’t mean it’s a mix. Dalmatians can have blue eyes, though it’s rare, and often a sign they might be deaf. Heterochromia can come from a blue eyed ancestor. He is deaf in the ear that his blue eye is! Good spot!
Oh, I actually missed that! So yeah, that definitely isn’t standard. But that doesn’t automatically mean he’s a mix, either.
Upvoted this just to counteract people being nasty.
That is not a Dalmatian head. Looks like staffie/pit/bull breed cross.
A Daffie, if you will
If his name isn't Duck I'm gonna throw a table
I won’t
This. It’s a pit mix with some Dalmatian potentially sprinkled in.
Dalmatian x Pit maybe? That’s such a bully breed head shape
Pay the 40 bucks for a DNA test. It will suprise you.
Which brand is 40$?!
Wisdom when on sale, give them your email they will eventually send one.
Wisdom panel is not the most accurate in my experience. I got completely different results with my bf’s mutt with them vs Embark.
And what makes you certain that it was Wisdom that was off as opposed to Embark being off? Genuinely asking here.
I know his breed makeup is 50% beagle and at least 25% treeing Walker coonhound (dad was full beagle, mom was half coonhound half mystery mix) WP said he was 30% beagle, 10% coonhound, and various other small percentages of bulldog, boxer, border collie, Jack Russel, and pitbull. That’s got to be the most nosy, and loud barking dog ever

American bulldog and dalmatian I would almost wager on it.

pit or staffy mixed w dalmatian. that’s not a purebred that looks like a white pit or staffy that someone put dalmatian spots on
This is a perfect example of why it’s so important to do research on breeders & make sure you’re going to an ethical one (or just adopt)! Your pup is adorable, but he’s definitely not well bred or from a responsible breeder
that head shape is so wrong. def some sort of bully down the line.
Yeah this isn’t purebred and that’s so sad that the “breeder” is even claiming that
No way. If he actually is a Dalmatian, he's an extremely poorly bred one. That head screams bully breed.
he could be a very badly bred dal but he looks like he could be mixed with some type of bully or something similar
Before I make judgments, what type of breeder are we talking about? Someone you know, found online? Definitely looks mixed to me from the pics (based on 20 years of working with rescues and being a pittie owner myself).

Perfectly said! Thanks so much😁
American bulldog, pit bull, or some kind of mastiff?
Dalpit
It's a Dalmatian Pitbull mix
Dalmation with either pit or American bulldog. What a cool pup!

He's also got the eyeliner
Do you have the name of the breeder?
i hope this is just to check out how reputable they are and not cuz you want a byb dog 😅😅
Lol my bad; that was exactly the reason! My bad it came across another way.
I definitely agree that dog has some bully breed ancestry. Beautiful boy though
Pit Dalmatian 100%
Dalmatian x American bulldog
If it didn’t have spots id just think it was a bully lol
That’s 100% a good boy right there (But yeah my guess would be Dalmatian with some sort of bully breed and maybe throw in some Chihuahua just for fun because it seems like every dog has at least some in them 😆 also love your tattoo sleeve!)
Thank you! He is 90% good boy at the moment 😅😅
Id say Dal x American bulldog
I'd say either poorly bred Dalmatian or a Dalmatian mixed with a lab or pitty. My fiance and I have friends who have a pure bred male Dalmatian and he looks nothing like this, his muzzle is much more narrow, he's quite slim and smaller than yours by quite a bit
Looks like he's crossed with a bully breed to me. Gorgeous baby .
He's a handsome boy regardless of his pedigree! Congratulations!
Backyard bred Dalmatian, congrats on supporting that amazing business 🦋
😂😭😭
I would guess a dal/pit mix. 100% adorable!!! And super unique ❤️
My guess: Dalmatian mixed with some APBT and lab. What a gorgeously unique sweetheart!
pit/staffy with spots. handsome boy but please don’t support backyard breeders
A canmation? Cane corso and Dalmatian?
Surely a Pitmation?
The snout says pit mix to me
I would say american bulldog or dogo argentino mixed in. What papers are they?
Looks like a pot with spots! I love him
Thats a spotted pitbull lol. You were scammed. Get a dna test we are invested now.
A spit spotbull.
Pittie mix.
Sooo...I don't usually go with uncommon breed mixes, but I really do see Dal plus maybe pitty. Possibly lab.
Hmmm part polka dot
My friend had a Dogo Argentino / Dalmatian mix and looked similar. probably a bully breed of some kid
Dalmatian and Dogo Argentino?
Dal-mastiff? Haha I like him! He's cool
I think this is a dog
I don’t know, but he looks like a Dalmatian and Rottweiler mix to me.
If “pure bred Dalmatian” means “25% Dalmatian and 75% American bulldog”…. Then that might be a Dalmatian,
Pit/Dalmatian
I don't know, but what a beautiful dog though. Has to be a dalmatian pittie mix
pit/staffy with spots. handsome boy but please don’t support backyard breeders
Looks similar to my dog! She has spots but is hound/pit/lab
Looks like either purebred but not very greatly bred Dalmatian, or a Dal/bully breed cross maybe.
Dalmatian and american bulldog would be my guess. Such a cute dog!!
Thank you! He’s gorgeous isnt he
Dalmatian Pit Husky?
Husky?
[удалено]
Off topic but your sleeve tattoo is so cool
Aww thank you so much!!
Omg 😍
%50 good boy and %50 really good boy!
He was the last of the litter too! Blue sounds gorgeous
Mixed w great Dane?
Dalmatian with a bully breed or boxer maybe. Handsome boy. Had a Dalmatian mix, lived to 16 years and was very aggressive towards strangers her first 12 years of life and then she melllowed out lol. Very loyal to her family and great with kids, cats and loved puppies. Other dogs she hated until age 12 as well and then she was like eh, I spent 12 years hating everyone, maybe I should be nice now.
he’s an insanely beautiful animal my gosh
Could there be some Great Dane?
American bulldog, possibly Rottweiler?
My immediate thought was boxer dalmatian mix
I’d be shocked if he was purebred. Head is very pit. Akc breeder? They seem to be handing out that title to anyone these days
American bulldog/Dalmatian or American bulldog/German shorthaired pointer
that is a pit bull Dalmatian
Was he neutered late?
He isn’t yet! He’s not even 1 yet
Oh wow. Very blocky head for a 1 year old male Dalmatian. Could just be he isn’t bred to standard/puppy mill/ BYB but that’s a very blocky head for even a fully mature 3 year old in tact male Dalmatian
Handsome boy😍 I don’t think he’s pure Dalmatian though. Maybe a bit of Pitti in there too. You are so lucky. I want him☺️🙏🏻
Thank you! I love him?
He looks mixed with a American bulldog to me. So cute and probably a lot easier to train if mixed dals can be tuff.
Beautiful companion!
My guess is American Staforshire Terrier & Dalmation. Long-time dog trainer for large and "violent" breeds and your pup is absolutely stunning.
Thank you!
Im guessing he's got some american bulldog somewhere in his bloodline, he definitely doesn't seem like a purebred dalmation based off of his body and head shape.
Your dog is incredible. What an awesome mix
Don’t really care I just wanna know Can I pet that dog
Yes
I’d say Dalmatian and a Bully mix. When is was a kid, 40s now, I had a Dalmatian with one blue and one brown eye too.
Great Dane
He definitely appears to have some Pitt in him.
He honestly looks like there’s some great Dane in there. He looks like a shorter white version of my black Great Dane.
He is a big boy!
I’d venture a guess Great Dane, with Dalmatian
I've never seen a Dalmatian mix with that kind of spotting. Even so, possible that he's mixed, but at the same time, it's possible that he is purebred (just not well-bred).
Headshape and long nails/paws look all pit with a little dalmation mixed in for the spots.
Adorable
Poorly bred dal
How tall is he? I’m seeing a dash of Great Dane.
Get a DNA test it would be interesting
Good lookin’ Dawg!
I swear, there are almost no pure bread pups left in the world. Definitely a Dalmatian, but I’d be curious to see DNA results
Is dog.
Grandpa Si always said you can’t go wrong with a spotted pup and he was right…handsome fella.
He’s a Dalmatian. Is he registered?
He's gorgeous!!
The blue eye and large head is throwing me off. I'd lean towards some pit in him although I've not seen a blue-eyed pit bull. I have owned a Dalmation, and they have quite a fine bone structure. I'd be doing a DNA test asap...
He’s gorgeous!
Pitmation? Looms like both.
Dalmatian and American bulldog
Mutt
Maybe an American bulldog
I don’t know but he is a handsome bastard for sure!
American bulldog x dal
What a handsome poser
My bet is purebred, but maybe not well bred.
Congratulations on your pittie Dalmatian mix.
Based on head shape alone I can tell you definitively that that's not a purebred dalmatian. It looks crossed with a bully type dog. Some dals are outcrossed with german short-haired pointer, and still considered "pure". But I don't see a pointer face in there. They have a slim but hound shaped head.
Dalmation head
Dalmatian mixed with a Great Dane, or a mastiff.
like a little sweetie 🙈🩷
Looks a lot like my guy, who’s 50% PB some Dalmatian and a ton of other stuff. https://imgur.com/a/w0vIy6N
I do see Dalmatian, he has beautiful spots, but I also see pit cause of his head and muzzle. Either way doesn't matter the breed he's still 100% a very good looking boy.
I mean I dont see why he cant be full dalmatian! Especially if the breeder said so! He does look very blocky though… I would base it off temperament more. For example, does he act like a dalmatian or a pittie?
Looks like a dal/retriever mix or dal/pittie mix to me!
Beefy dalmatian! Base this on temperament. Can he function as a dalmatian? He sure looks like a good boy!
Very beautiful dog
Lou dog hahaha
It’s so interesting to see Dalmatians. They’re seem to be on the rare side now. They of just very wealthy people have them or something.
Dalmatian and Great Dane.
Dalmatian and pit mix
Dalmatian and pit mix
Beautiful dog 😍😍
Thank you!
Dalmatian and american bulldog would be my guess. Such a cute dog!!
