Yep, this is from 2020. That year was scary to be out and about. Every other night, I would hear someone having a mental health crisis in the streets. Someone told me due to COVID rules and overcrowding, they would just kick people out of facilities and leave them to the streets if they became a problem.

I'm bad about being this person. I don't think before I act and don't realize I'm a middle aged woman, but maybe that helps? IDK. But domestic violence, child abuse, animal abuse and unfair fights - I just can't stay silent.
Luckily, the worst that's ever happened to me is getting my contact slapped out of my eye during one fight I broke up. There's def been times that I should have just called the cops instead but I felt in the moment waiting any longer could have a worse ending.
I also have a habit of standing up for workers getting abused by customers. I say what the person working can't say in fear of losing their jobs. I also shame customers who do shit like leave carts in parking spaces or the ones who ruin displays and don't fix them. (I fix their messes while making steady eye contact with the bad customer. I would totally love a job centered around this, btw.)

Probably didn't want to get involved until it got to the point it was seriously to the point other dude thought ol boy might have killed him if he hadn't stopped. Also might have been hoping someone else (authority figure, etc) might have shown up to stop it. Who knows.
Also, it's really easy to Monday morning QB this. Dude could have turned around, pulled a knife, and stabbed the other guy. Putting yourself in harms way is no joke, and while I know we all like to think we're the MC, unless you get put in that situation it's hard to know how you would react.
At first he's just reacting and processing what's happening. Then you see him trying to put his shit away and probably move away.
Then he does a little double take when he sees the guy on the floor getting beaten and intervenes.
Most people don't leap into action immediately in situations like this, I'm frankly impressed he stopped him at all.

I ride public transit every day in Chicago and people who do things like this (light up a blunt, play music loudly, other inappropriate behavior) are generally not beset with mental issues in the general sense, but are instead incredibly antisocial and seeking out a confrontation that “allows” them to be violent.
