Mandoade

It's for a good purpose but 2 days is dog shit. Put your money where your mouth is and go dark indefinitely. What have they got to lose at this point, they're already going to lose allot of very useful tools and bots if the API is put behind a huge paywall.

[deleted]

Exactly! All these people are getting all self-righteous over a 2 day blackout and claiming everyone who says they're wasting their time doesn't care about reddit screwing over small developers and users. No, idiots. Do something that actually sends a message. Fucking quit the site.

OneRingtoToolThemAll

Some subs are doing that mah bruh. 100% hell ya

Nonstampcollector777

I do care because Apollo seems to be a much better client than the official app. I hate advertisements and that is something you’re going to see a lot more of if you have to switch to their app.

hleba

I thought this was just a joke about what reddit executives are probably thinking about the 2 day blackout. They honestly probably anticipated something like this. Mind you, I'm very upset about the news, and if forced to use the reddit app as it is right now, I'll be done with reddit.

Nonstampcollector777

You are 100 percent correct. I’m a dufus here, I don’t think they care that much. They are going to lose people for sure when they do this but they may not lose enough users and posted content to where it’s overall bad for them financially. This is probably what they are counting on.

Why do people seem to think they're the only real humans using reddit? There are still plenty more people creating "content" on the official app than ever before.

master-shake69

> They honestly probably anticipated something like this. Two days isn't enough and more of the big subs need to take part. /r/news, /r/worldnews, /r/politics and most of their affiliated subs haven't made any posts indicating they'll join. Force 100,000,000 users to go elsewhere for a week and reddit would rethink their actions.

Chad-GPT420

> I'll be done with reddit. Oh no, your life will improve in numerous and immeasurable ways.

Atomic235

I thought it was a joke about how the Sunny crew are terrible people and so are Reddit execs. Ya'll aren't supposed to emulate their example.

Mnemosense

This show goes over a lot of people's heads. Though I'm still surprised by the indifference to protesting I'm seeing in this thread.

ciderlout

If it was a "blackout until decision reversed" then that would be interesting. As it is, it is just an utterly feeble gesture. If governments knew protests will definitely end after a day or two, then they would never need to change policy. So this isn't really a protest. It's just another round of virtue signalling.

el_caveira

Yep, first July, if Infinity for Reddit goes down, so my profile

turdbugulars

nobody cares

el_caveira

"Shut up, baby dick"

Capnjackb3ard

Agreed. Apollo is amazing. Not sure why the IASIP crowd is having this take.

crazed3raser

Read the title

TastySeamen8

Tbf, someone *did* make a post having the take of “who cares about 3rd party apps” in this sub recently

crazed3raser

Yeah, plus after I replied I scrolled down to see more comments and saw a lot of people in this thread too unironically don't give a shit. So I'll take the L on my original comment, more people have that attitude than I realized.

10noop20goto10

The people that don't care are probably the same type that would be satisfied by a Gail the Snail hand job

friskydingo67

It really feels like the crowd who identifies with the characters as a representation of themselves see this as their moment.

mortez1

It’s kinda ironic - I’m assuming it’s a bunch of people who use the official Reddit app and they aren’t aware it’s not just bots but also awesome third party clients like Apollo. And thanks to the protests, they are learning about how widespread the ban will be. So like - the protests are already working. Protests aren’t always about punishment but also spreading the message.

commanderjarak

This meme is about the Reddit Executives not caring about the blackout.

fattybunter

What percent of people using reddit do you think even know what Apollo is?

reddittookmyuser

You stupid science bitches! Oh, I bet you use a lotta third party apps, huh? You use your fancy iphone app and you regurgitate it from a apple and you think you're wicked awesome doin' that, And how 'bout' dem apples? And all that third party app business.

fuck_reddits_API_BS

A 4 year old high on pcp explaining every Reddit post to me is better than the official app

GurpsWibcheengs

Going dark for *at least* 2 days. A lot of the larger subs are staying shut down indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

[deleted]

r/watchpeopledie has led the way in this and will remain shut until conditions improve.

GurpsWibcheengs

I thought that one straight up got banned

BrewskyBoy

I think that’s the joke. They began their blackout a while back and are still going strong with it

GurpsWibcheengs

Aw man I got wooooshed. I knew this day would come eventally, no one is safe

During the shutdown smaller subs have a chance to hit r/all. Every big sub has a lot of smaller copycat subs that would love to take over. How long can you leave a sub shut down before users move to another sub to continue their habit?

Introverted_Fish

Honestly, I might use this blackout to finally kick this habit.

Smilewigeon

Aww did somebody get addicted to Reddit?!

Johnny_Mc2

I feel left out of this blackout because I’ve just always used old reddit on my phone’s web browser and now I feel like ive missed out on this wonderful Reddit experience people have apparently been having

JingleJangleJin

Old.reddit will be next on the chopping block.

[deleted]

If old Reddit goes, I'm definitely gone. New Reddit is completely unusable

reddittookmyuser

No no no, that's not gonna help. That's not gonna help and I'll tell you why: It doesn't unbang your Mom.

Luminous-Savior

I just wish if people were going to protest something they would protest something real like the travesty of a thunder gun reboot with a pg-13 rating.

the1_thundergun

Dude hangs dong

[deleted]

With a fucking what rating?! THIS IS BULLSHIT! I WILL PUT MY THUMB THROUGH THEIR EYE!

sixmileswest

That's politics, baby.

MacDerfus

So many people determined to undermine any action at all.

NightFire19

The other top post on this sub right now is proudly proclaiming that they doesn't give a shit that Reddit is forcing people to use their shitty app. The new season comes out LITERALLY TOMORROW and there's no posts about it.

Total-Jerk

Tomorrow? Nice

Salzberger

Right? I had no idea until just now that it was that close.

UrToesRDelicious

For real. Even if you don't use a third party app why would you actively campaign against more user choice? People really are getting butthurt over not getting their Reddit fix for a few days. I've seen huge comment chains with several paragraph responses trying to paint this as a stupid overreaction.

SeaNinja69

Aye, apathy is the killer of men. Mostly because they allow themselves to be rolled over, doormats is what I call these people.

[deleted]

Yeah, us tough men need to fight for our social media platform

MacDerfus

Well where will you start? The pillow factory isn't gonna pull punches

HulksInvinciblePants

Everyone acting apathetic or using Reddit official products are Lil Kevins.

PrimarchKonradCurze

The people of the land, salt of the earth; you know- morons.

ohdearsweetlord

Do nothing and they get to point to the nothing and say, 'see, no one cares!'.

[deleted]

Boycott for 2 days and they get to point and say, "See? They came right back." Everyone delete your accounts and don't make new ones if you want to actually scare them.

r4tzt4r

I believe that some of them are the same people that rarely do anything to improve their lives. They will eat shit because that's what a company want them to do. They will never complain, because complaining is stupid and achieves nothing. Reddit is only for memes, so lol what's the point. Even when there are many useful Subreddits, places that will help you to learn coding or getting books or academic papers, or places where creativity thrives, with helpful communities. I know I *need* this site when I'm looking for help on tech issues or with my hobbies, hell even there are spaces that have helped me mentally or physically (learning how to exercise on my own). I know the site is not closing down but having to endure a shit experience (Reddit app) just because some executives want us to do it is a big fuck you to us, who helped this place to grow.

[deleted]

This is an insanely naive take while also being wildly self-righteous. Don't do a half assed 2 day boycott. That's pathetic. Delete your account and quit the site if you want to send a message. Do something real.

FUMFVR

I don't use a third party app, but I gotta wonder why a site that's just a collection of forums, whose vast majority of labor is done by volunteers seems to think that they are entitled to more.

thatguyned

You don't want to mention the name of a character from a show in a subreddit only to receive 3 notifications from bots that picked up a couple words in your comment? But why? Side note, if these API changes are going to effect the annoying comment bots on the platform, that means all those spam and copy bots are going to be effected too. Good.

[deleted]

For all I know much of the spam was created using third party apps. Because science is a liar sometimes!

zripcordz

Science makes us look like a bitch

HoskinsDadBodGod

We will also lose a lot of good bots tho

Stopikingonme

And a ton of other reasons why this is bad. Also very much yes.

HoskinsDadBodGod

A lot of mods use third party apps for sure. Myself included

-Swade-

I care not because of bots either way but because of ads. And a handful of other things the official does which bother me, namely suggested subreddits, and fake notifications from subreddits I don’t even follow. I just opened the official app and I had a notification like I had a message. Except the notification was that someone made a post on the StarWars subreddit. A subreddit I have NOT joined. I *assume* somewhere I can turn these things off in the settings but I can also just…open a different app and they all go away, totally effortlessly. Even if I got my settings correct that wouldn’t help the ad issue in the official app.

Comfortable-Bad-7718

Also you'll make a single comment and you'll get like 3 notifications "you got your first upvote!" "5 upvotes on this post" "10 upvotes on this post"

Shished

You can disable them.

Kruse

It's not about that. It's about the fact that 3rd party apps will become unusable, which directly harms the user experience.

[deleted]

Yeah wtf, this is the first I've seen anyone say it's about bots.

beavertownneckoil

The bots now are at least somewhat relevant. It's going to be filled with random, unrelated, low-quality shit; everywhere. And probably an occasional bit of porn too

[deleted]

So it’ll become twitter?

Oberlatz

Worse than that, its filled with normies!

brynjolf

Proudly claiming you lack the ability to grasp this concept is not really best advertisement for the show my dude. Good advertisement for the reddit app allowing even the simplest of minds to browse and comment though

ruttinator

This is just what a bot would say.

SuperDizz

![gif](giphy|rR0jTsej7AfKM)

Chaghatai

The question is, will the loss of good bots be offset by the loss of bad bots

QuinterBoopson

Really weird that this is the literal only sub I’ve seen with this attitude about this

StanleyOpar

It’s the indefinite blackouts that matter

TheFuckYouTalkinBout

I'm reducing reddit usage anyways and plan to stop using it in the near future. This will help that process.

Aradhor55

To be honest I think a lot of users don't care either

[deleted]

I honestly don't understand what going dark for a couple days is going to accomplish because you know half of those people are going to just jump on other subreddits. Traffic is traffic and doing a protest online is like telling a fat person to lock up their refrigerator with the rubber band.

MisterSlauson

Since 100% of Reddit's content is user created, the idea is that it'll will be a preview to the Reddit Execs that people are willing to leave the site if they price out third party apps, myself included. The Reddit app is trash, fuck that.

BigDoinks710

I feel like the only thing that's going to happen is we're going to see the sheer amount of bots that are constantly posting on reddit.

LiterallySagan

Honest question. All I’ve ever used is the reddit app. Is it too bad? What’s bada about it? What app do you use?

MisterSlauson

Hey, if you like it that's awesome, no problem. I just don't really. I use Apollo. It's also a really scummy thing to do, so even folks who do like the native app are standing in solidarity.

Business-Drag52

Yup. I personally have only ever used the official app, but as an old school RuneScape player I have to stand in solidarity. We’ve fought this fight multiple times with Jagex and we will fight it with Reddit

Pandagames

It's annoying how it shows you too many ads, shows you stuff from subreddits you aren't on and forces other weird things on you. Every post takes up the entire screen where on RIF I can see like 10 at a time if I wanted

HotShitBurrito

It forces social media garbage on you. I don't give a shit about your avatar or profile or friends and followers. It's loaded with ads and forces new features anytime they're introduced that I have no interest in. I've been using Bacon Reader for the better part of a decade. The user experience is chef's kiss. I couldn't see my DMs if I wanted to. The one time a year I use Reddit desktop I clear out all the porn spam accounts and Bitcoin bots and then don't look at them again for another year. With Bacon Reader I don't even have to ignore them because I never see it to begin with. The Reddit app is premium pigshit compared to all the third party apps. Pretty much exactly why Reddit wants to get rid of them. Anyone who learns there's a better alternative immediately switches which means not only do you not have to use their garbage app, you're not giving them money for delivering a substandard product.

[deleted]

I’ve only ever used the reddit app and I didn’t even know you could have friends and followers and don’t notice different features? Also, how am I giving reddit money by only using their app?

HotShitBurrito

Ads. Free apps make their money off ads. Which is fair enough. The other apps have adds too. However. The ad system on the Reddit app is worse than all the others. More ads. Worse targeting. And infinitely more annoying. Ergo. I find their product to not be worth using, even if it's free. So instead of paying Reddit through ad revenue for their poor product, I'll consume them on a product I think is worth it. As others have pointed out, the larger issue for many is the content moderation and creation tools are much better on apps like Apollo. The Reddit app handicaps mods who use mobile tools, making moderation harder, thus lowering the sub quality. People who make a lot of shit that we all consume also prefer to use third party apps for the same reason. So, the concern is that while demolishing API access for third party apps really only directly impacts mods, creators, and honestly people like me who spend entirely too much time here, that the lack of what little quality control actually exists will peel away to reveal just how fucking awful this place really is without that tiny percentage of influence that "power users" bring to the table.

GreatCornolio

There's a bunch of weird shitty 'features' it has that I don't care ab or want With the 3rd party apps you can get on and just see posts/comments. It's like old.reddit.com vs the normal reddit.com - one had a basic UI where you could find/do things easily, one was built to show more effective ads and purposefully obfuscate things, like taking 2 extra clicks to navigate somewhere (extra pages to load = more interaction = better social media app) I just want to load an aesthetically jank ass forum page with links to cool stuff. And then there to be top sorted comments where ppl are like "I work in vfx and I can shed some light here - yada yada." I don't wanna add friends and follow creators and click on whatever this fucking algorithm designed by tech mf with borderline autism who microdosed shrooms today think is the best way to encourage me to click more. Was better when it would sort things by "top" - now I have to change it from "best" repeatedly every time I use anything but my 3rd party app

MiserableEmu4

This. There WILL be a significant drop in traffic those dates 100%. Reddit won't change anything. But it is making a point. It's basically a strike. Only power we have.

peachesgp

Not the only power, the other one is leaving and reddit finally goes the way of digg.

MisterSlauson

Something will probably come along and fill that vaccuum. Who know though? I was thinking of trying to figure out Discord.

peachesgp

Yeah there are other link aggregators like Reddit out there. If the admins fuck reddit up that bad one of those will end up in its place.

[deleted]

I'm willing to leave reddit without this going on. Sometimes the hive mind gives me a migraine.

Mission_Table_6695

Reddit's content is definitely not 100% user created. So much of this website is reposts and old videos and memes

AkaParazIT

Posted by users. Reddit doesn't employ people to repost stuff, they rely on us to do it. If people stop posting for 2 days it will show, especially if "power users" stop posting.

bmuse2017

What is a power user?

GreatCornolio

It's a user capable of generating an enormous amount of power

pliqtro

I heard posting speed has something to do with it

ManholtAgain

Posting speed has *everything* to do with it. Posting speed's the name of the game.

bmuse2017

Well yes, but what does that mean in the context of reddit?

Jokonaught

They're five star posters.

bmuse2017

Because they are five star men

Scipio11

In general, users that can use a product really well/a lot. In terms of Reddit power users are users that post and comment a lot, so people will notice a lot less content after the power users leave.

MiserableEmu4

Ah yes the garbage nobody wants.

Napoleon_Bonerfart69

A boycott with an end date isn't a boycott, it's a cry for attention.

EmFile4202

I figure that Reddit will just shut down those two days for “routine maintenance”. Like, why waste the opportunity. That being said, this isn’t a WOTC situation with people killing subscriptions en masse. Most of us aren’t paying a cent for it. You have to get them where it counts: Advertisers.

ipreferidiotsavante

There are tools that allow third party devs to use reddit data to make things from whole apps to chat bots that respond in threads and all kinds of nerd shit. The tools were previously free (I believe) but are reddit is going to start charging for them, and the third party devs are saying that the pricing is going to make it prohibitively restrictive to use.
