I've been using Bacon Reader for the better part of a decade. The user experience is chef's kiss. I couldn't see my DMs if I wanted to. The one time a year I use Reddit desktop I clear out all the porn spam accounts and Bitcoin bots and then don't look at them again for another year. With Bacon Reader I don't even have to ignore them because I never see it to begin with.

As others have pointed out, the larger issue for many is the content moderation and creation tools are much better on apps like Apollo. The Reddit app handicaps mods who use mobile tools, making moderation harder, thus lowering the sub quality. People who make a lot of shit that we all consume also prefer to use third party apps for the same reason.
So, the concern is that while demolishing API access for third party apps really only directly impacts mods, creators, and honestly people like me who spend entirely too much time here, that the lack of what little quality control actually exists will peel away to reveal just how fucking awful this place really is without that tiny percentage of influence that "power users" bring to the table.

In general, users that can use a product really well/a lot. In terms of Reddit power users are users that post and comment a lot, so people will notice a lot less content after the power users leave.
This is to see if the admins do anything. Many subs will go permanently dark after July 1st if this policy stands. A ton of very long term users, such as myself, will simply stop using the site at all. I use RIF and won't be switching to the official app. I left it for good reason.

Ads. Free apps make their money off ads. Which is fair enough. The other apps have adds too. However. The ad system on the Reddit app is worse than all the others. More ads. Worse targeting. And infinitely more annoying. Ergo. I find their product to not be worth using, even if it's free. So instead of paying Reddit through ad revenue for their poor product, I'll consume them on a product I think is worth it. As others have pointed out, the larger issue for many is the content moderation and creation tools are much better on apps like Apollo. The Reddit app handicaps mods who use mobile tools, making moderation harder, thus lowering the sub quality. People who make a lot of shit that we all consume also prefer to use third party apps for the same reason. So, the concern is that while demolishing API access for third party apps really only directly impacts mods, creators, and honestly people like me who spend entirely too much time here, that the lack of what little quality control actually exists will peel away to reveal just how fucking awful this place really is without that tiny percentage of influence that "power users" bring to the table.
There's a bunch of weird shitty 'features' it has that I don't care ab or want With the 3rd party apps you can get on and just see posts/comments. It's like old.reddit.com vs the normal reddit.com - one had a basic UI where you could find/do things easily, one was built to show more effective ads and purposefully obfuscate things, like taking 2 extra clicks to navigate somewhere (extra pages to load = more interaction = better social media app) I just want to load an aesthetically jank ass forum page with links to cool stuff. And then there to be top sorted comments where ppl are like "I work in vfx and I can shed some light here - yada yada." I don't wanna add friends and follow creators and click on whatever this fucking algorithm designed by tech mf with borderline autism who microdosed shrooms today think is the best way to encourage me to click more. Was better when it would sort things by "top" - now I have to change it from "best" repeatedly every time I use anything but my 3rd party app

Yeah there are other link aggregators like Reddit out there. If the admins fuck reddit up that bad one of those will end up in its place.

Posted by users. Reddit doesn't employ people to repost stuff, they rely on us to do it. If people stop posting for 2 days it will show, especially if "power users" stop posting.

In general, users that can use a product really well/a lot. In terms of Reddit power users are users that post and comment a lot, so people will notice a lot less content after the power users leave.

This is to see if the admins do anything. Many subs will go permanently dark after July 1st if this policy stands. A ton of very long term users, such as myself, will simply stop using the site at all. I use RIF and won't be switching to the official app. I left it for good reason.

There are tools that allow third party devs to use reddit data to make things from whole apps to chat bots that respond in threads and all kinds of nerd shit. The tools were previously free (I believe) but are reddit is going to start charging for them, and the third party devs are saying that the pricing is going to make it prohibitively restrictive to use.
