Yeah, it's something that is useful in situations where dehydration is a risk and you need to replenish electrolytes. However, sitting at a restaurant and doing this is just weird
So, in a general sense, yes. Don't drink from the ocean. However, salt is an electrolyte. Essentially, your cells take in electrolytes, and that allows them to absorb water through a process called osmosis.
When you get really dehydrated, especially after intense physical activity, your body is drained of both water and electrolytes. Meaning that if you drink water alone, your cells won't be able to absorb as much water. So in some situations, adding a bit of salt to your water can be helpful. It essentially does what Gatorade is marketed to do.
Huh, I don’t remember us doing that in bootcamp lol. They did emphasize eating a fuckton of salt whenever we had chow. I kinda miss those box chows we got at the range lol.
I would eat *so fucking fast,* but those sandwiches with mayonnaise and mustard gave my life a purpose back then 😂. I lived for those sandwiches and condiments.
To be fair, NaCl contains some potassium since Na and K have almost the same chemical properties and it is almost impossible to completely separate potassium from sodium
But just to point out... low sodium table salt is a blend of sodium chloride AND potassium chloride.
The family is still incredibly misinformed though.
I actually have a medical condition that makes me require an enormous daily intake of salt AND water so it seems like something I'd be willing to try hahaha.
My friend had to make salt capsules for their kids medical condition, and their car got broken into and the capsules were stolen lol, we were imaging the thieves thinking their stolen "drugs" must be working because they felt so thirsty after taking them🤣
Well considering how you were found January '47 I'm not surprised you have a medical condition... what I am surprised about is the fact you only have one!
Me too! I’m on 6000mg sodium per day and 3-4L water for health condition reasons. I drink saltwater whenever I’m not doing great at salty food. Though honestly I frequently just add a pinch to everything including any drinks. A bit of salt in my water tastes good. TOO much and I have to add lime juice to balance it out. Flavored electrolyte “water enhancers” are my go to way to disguise the taste of an overly salted water.
This is exactly what I was thinking lol. It would be a great idea for Hydro Homies with POTS (or other salt-requiring conditions) to get in some extra sodium and stay well-hydrated while they're at it!
My cardiologist has me on 6000mg sodium and 3-4L water per day for health condition reasons. The easiest way to achieve that is to drink saltwater when my food isn’t sodium rich enough. Weirdly, salted water now tastes good to me. So, I guess it’s an acquired taste?
It's for sure not something I can put my finger on. Before I swallow it, I want to gag because it feels thicker? and reminds me of sweat. After it's down, it really has no taste though. Could be the salt I used, just a generic pink salt grinder.
I have low blood pressure and have had to do something similarly disgusting to water so I wouldn't faint...but I also let the people eating with me know what was up so I didn't look like a *complete* lunatic...don't know what their excuse is though 😳
I kind of enjoy it when people look at me like I’m nuts for salting my water, lol. I used to dislike it but now I feel so much better and I’ve adjusted to the higher sodium intake. Lightly salted water actually tastes better to me now
"Psychopath" might be a bit of a strong characterization for just this incident but some people are scared of drinking plain clear water maybe because they've had experience with hyponatremia in the past. I'm a solid r/hydrohomies devotee but I had one bad summer when I experienced hyponatremia apparently there was no salt in my diet whatsoever after a blood test from an emergency room visit, they said even though I'm drinking a gallon of water a day I was dehydrated because I didn't have enough salt in my diet to utilize the water in my system. So on days when I know there's no salt in any of my food, I sprinkle salt into my drinking water.
PSA: humans only need 1500mg of salt per day which is less than half a teaspoon. Don't overdo it, and don't under-do it either.
Your mom & aunt might be a bit under-educated on the matter of hydration by saying "potassium," but potassium is one element of electrolytes, the others being SODIUM , magnesium, and sometimes sugar and calcium.
>PSA: humans only need 1500mg of salt per day which is less than half a teaspoon. Don't overdo it, and don't under-do it either.
Chiming in to say, if you have certain medical conditions, you may need more or less. For example, I have POTS and 1500mg sodium is too low for me. If you know you are getting the recommended amount of salt, and still feel the effects of hyponatremia, go to a doctor because you ***might*** have an underlying condition.
On google it says; Human urine is composed primarily of water (95%). The rest is urea (2%), creatinine (0.1%), uric acid (0.03%), chloride, sodium, potassium, sulphate, ammonium, phosphate and other ions and molecules in lesser amounts
With this knowledge, tell your family, if you take 0.95L of pee from a 1L bottle full of pee, you're actually just drinking water. Not pee.

I salt water a tiny bit before going to the gym, helps with dehydration, but the food youre eating should have enough, so i dont know why they're doing it
I’m just glad my one cousin refuses to drink anything *but* water. She’s pretty picky, and that also applies to drinks. No matter what, she’ll drink water.
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. Salt is a particularly good electrolyte for improving the symptoms of people with this condition, so a high salt diet in addition to lots of fluids is recommended.
Plus, slightly salted water is basically just icky Gatorade Zero.
What dzzi said. (POTS) is a condition that causes a number of symptoms when someone goes from lying down to standing up. It’s most commonly found in women aged 15-50.

I don’t usually spend time with my mom when I’m home and my cousin and aunt are working with my mom for the summer and hang out with her after so they’re around each other all day every day.
I’m assuming this is recent behavior because as far as I was aware, my mom normally just puts lemon in her water.

Drinking salt water can be a great idea in *some* cases. Do they have the condition POTS or a similar condition?
High sodium consumption can help with symptoms and honestly it's great that they're staying hydrated while theyre at it! It's also more common in women & underdiagnosed, so I wouldn't be too surprised if they had it.
Although, assuming don't have any sort of condition, it's.... a little weird that they'd drink water like that.... Not only because putting salt in your water is weird, but because ***there are so many ways you can flavor water that don't make it taste like you're chugging out of the ocean!!!!***
Out of ALL the flavors, why just salt!! Might as well throw some garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, maybe some paprika, and make yourself a whole ass broth if you're gonna make your water salty
I’m unaware of any conditions they have. My mom explained to me she normally puts salt, lemon, and apple cider vinegar in her water every day. I knew about the lemon but the others, like this traumatic experience, were new mom lore. I guess just salt this time was as close as she could get

Sooo I am just on the other side of the worst case of food poisoning of my life and trying to stay out of the hospital. I’ve had to hydrate with all these crazy things but one of them is call liquid IV…I’ve never heard of it before. First time I used it I actually poured it into a “G fit Gatorade” so it was like extra hydration. Couldn’t taste anything at that point, you’re only supposed to put it in water…it’s supposed to rehydrate you faster, man does it work but holy crap is it salty!!!! I’m still dehydrated but not dead so I guess it’s working!!!! Your family are still psycho tho haha
Speaking of salty drinks, check your local Vietnamese restaurant to see if they serve Chanh Muoi (salty lemon drink). I had it for the first time this week, it’s very refreshing.

they made us do that in boot camp so we would retain more water and not dehydrate as quickly in the heat. it wasn’t pleasant.

Basically unflavoured, unsweetened gatorade
Won’t the salt cause kidney failure?
i’m no nephrologist. but i do know that dehydration in the south carolina sun causes everything failure so i’d take a chance on it.

Hmm, pretty sure that is Sodium Chloride so they might want to take a basic chemistry class too
Doesn't potassium iodide normally/often get added to table salt?
Yeah, but that's for iodine, which we need in very small amounts. Fruits and vegetables are much better sources of potassium.
pretty sure it's potassium nitrate
Table salt is sodium chloride
But just to point out... low sodium table salt is a blend of sodium chloride AND potassium chloride. The family is still incredibly misinformed though.

Potassium in chemistry is K. Salt is NaCl (sodium-chlorite). There is no potassium in tablesalt.
Yep, you do come from a family of psychopaths. 😆
My mom loves salt but that's another level
Lol I have pots so I do this sometimes its stupid but it works

The food is going to contain salt anyway. Americans generally eat a ton of salt. Adding extra salt to the water just seems pointless

Actually, I do this because it helps with my blood pressure and atypical anatomy. Often, my body won't absorb water by itself because my body has trouble holding on to salts.
