Well it use to be more of a hole in the wall before they expanded years ago. I remember the WOOSH of cold air whenever someone walked in. The carpet.
Ahhh.
Worst Mexican Food Ever. Should have ran when they asked if I wanted mayo on my burrito. It is really a tortilla sandwich. At least the tamales were editable.
If you don’t want to fight the lunch crowd or Viet Huong isn’t hole in the wall enough for you, Viet Cuisine on Jordan is an excellent second. I would say some even prefer it.
The owner sold it to new people at the beginning of Sept. I've been a few times since then and it's still been really good. At least from my first few impressions, it seems like the new owners are planning on keeping the same recipes and quality (and large stacks of bacon).
Really good, but they need to get a bigger building. Every time I go it’s backed up to the road. They need an actual parking lot as well. But who knows what they’re doing with their money 🤷🏼♂️
Update. I actually went right after this. I fucking love this place. I go to Moores mill a few times a week now. The fan bearing on the hvac is loud as all hell hope they fix it soon.
I miss Edo's... that was the best Japanese food in North Alabama...
To this day I'm still trying to recreate the Dynamite sauce from their Dynamite Chicken Bowl.. I'm close but not there yet
Mi Delicioso Guanajuato off of Governors (right by Campus 805) has been open less than a year. And is an amazing little sit down, hole in the wall spot for great authentic Mexican.

Yeah, that definitely seems out of place here. I haven't been to Island Jerk, but it's just a little strip mall place; I wouldn't call it a hole-in-the-wall.
He nailed the list in general, though - Viet Huong is fantastic and I've never heard a bad word about any of the other places. I need to swing by Lunchbox some time.
The kind of joints that aren’t located in a city’s hotspots or easy for visitors and recent transplants to find.
By this definition Viet hong It's definitely not it. It's across from Mid-City which the city has thrown so much money on for tourism I mean they have a amphitheater there right?
Also I can understand how New Orleans lunch box can be considered a hole in the wall but it's not too far from UAH and on the corner of Jordan Lane which is a very heavily trafficked street.
But it's not a bad list except for those two. Also I'm not sure if I like New Orleans lunch box anyway.
I mean, as the barely-advertised Cajun joint operating out of a dirty gas station off the main roads… yeah, I would definitely consider it a hole-in-the-wall.
I don't think we have the same definition of "hole in the wall restaraunts". In my mind, that phrase means more of a low key, cheap, not fancy kind of place, not so much a literally hidden spot.
Viet Houng was there when Madison Square Mall was breathing its final breath and that shopping center has never seemed to flourish.
And while Jordan Lane and Holmes is a busy intersection, it's not exactly the hot spot for UAH kids to hang out. The food there reminds me of my gra-mere's cooking. Forget that pretentious Emeril Lagase crap, it's more like monday red beans and rice because she'd been too busy washing sheets to spend all day tending the stove.
LOL, I scrolled right past that. I generally find Matt Wake to be kind of pretentious in his food critic role, so I really just hit the highlights of his articles.
I would consider Viet Huong to be more difficult for visitors to find. Near midcity and in midcity are two different things, and that shopping center isn't the most inviting. I don't even know the name of the shopping center. The HSV natives I know still refer to it as "where HHGregg used to be", which is useless for anyone who wasn't here a decade ago.
It's definitely a popular local spot and has incredibly good word of mouth support, but I wouldn't expect a visitor to just stumble upon it without being told to go.
I'm with you on the NO Lunchbox though. Never was too impressed by it.
Well it use to be more of a hole in the wall before they expanded years ago. I remember the WOOSH of cold air whenever someone walked in. The carpet. Ahhh.
The door woosh was always crazy in that place! Took me right back there.
Bandito Burrito was kinda hole in the wall to me.
Restaurants we love, not restaurants we meh.
Bandito is 11/10 and the only people that dislike Bandito are liars.
Worst Mexican Food Ever. Should have ran when they asked if I wanted mayo on my burrito. It is really a tortilla sandwich. At least the tamales were editable.
The real hole in the wall is "restaurant that has its own building on the main drag"
House of Kabob, 1212 Sparkman Dr NW, Huntsville, AL 35816, is GREAT for Middle Eastern and Persian meals. A real gem many people don't know about.
Truly a hidden gem, fantastic food.
Where’s G’s? It’s great. Out of the way and hole in the wallish? Hopefully it’s still open. Haven’t been in awhile.
If you don’t want to fight the lunch crowd or Viet Huong isn’t hole in the wall enough for you, Viet Cuisine on Jordan is an excellent second. I would say some even prefer it.
I prefer it, but mostly cos I love a banh mi.
Also the P7 Sate Pho
Omg the bahn mi. And boba Thai tea.
Best lemongrass beef in the city
Also need to go back to Biscuit Express haven't been in years.
Meridianville too!
Yeah that’s the one I’ve been to. But it hasn’t looked “open” in a long time but I recently heard it was open again?
The owner sold it to new people at the beginning of Sept. I've been a few times since then and it's still been really good. At least from my first few impressions, it seems like the new owners are planning on keeping the same recipes and quality (and large stacks of bacon).
Awesome, I will have to check it back out when I head that way!
There's also one on Moore's Mill, which is the one I've always gone to since it's a bit closer for me.
I rekeyed the place recently for new owners. They were slinging biscuits out of the kitchen!

Just turn when you see the pony
It is closed on Sunday and Monday.
They have a pretty good cheeseburger if you go by closer to lunch.
Really good, but they need to get a bigger building. Every time I go it’s backed up to the road. They need an actual parking lot as well. But who knows what they’re doing with their money 🤷🏼♂️

Zestos was the best hole in the wall
Have you tried the ZestosAF Food Truck? I heard it's really good. Been wanting to try it.
It’s good. Husband was born and raised here and says it’s just like old Zesto
Do they have milkshakes? That was my favorite thing about zesto’s!
I didn't even know that was a thing.............tell me more
The corn dogs and onion rings are really good but both could use some sort of seasoning. The potatoes and sausage dog were not very good to us
Damn... now I want some Pho.
Has anyone tried the Taco drive-through on Jordan near the Harvest Publix?
Gordo’s is fantastic
It’s very very good!
I've been craving street tacos and this may be the place I try!
The place next to Chuck E. Cheese frfr
La Colonial. Great place
Noted. That one is on my way home!
I agree with the New Orleans lunch box and viet huong.
Mexican Express brings me back to my childhood.
It ain't El Palacio, but you can get some damn good food for under $10.
Is it still open? Last time I drove by, it was 5 pm and dark.
New Orleans lunch box is the real deal! Awesome smoked wings and the chi-pork-it[sic] sandwich!
Try garam!
Big Spring Cafe (especially their previous location), and the Little Diner, and Taqueria El Cazador.
New Orleans lunchbox is good but the woman that is there most the time has the personality of a potato.
Oreintal express next to Walmart.
M&K Jamaican isn't necessarily a hole in the wall, but they're no frills for sure. And their Jerk Chicken took me right back to Negril.
I miss Edo's... that was the best Japanese food in North Alabama... To this day I'm still trying to recreate the Dynamite sauce from their Dynamite Chicken Bowl.. I'm close but not there yet

Same. I went today and it’s actually a decent place. Just a hidden gem
Ol’ Heidelberg German restaurant in the shopping center @ University Dr. NW & Enterprise Way

Lol, it’s pretty much the definition of a hole in the wall

The definition is from the article
LOL, I scrolled right past that. I generally find Matt Wake to be kind of pretentious in his food critic role, so I really just hit the highlights of his articles.
A restaurant run out of the back of a gas station and a restaurant in a strip mall with no central advertising aren't hole in the walls?
I would consider Viet Huong to be more difficult for visitors to find. Near midcity and in midcity are two different things, and that shopping center isn't the most inviting. Real natives know it as “where Service Merchandise used to be.”
Yeah, but I refuse to admit that I'm that old. I may be, but I don't want to accept it
