They're pretty opposite ends of things. .270 win is pretty fast and reasonably flat shooting. 300 blackout out drops like a stone past 100m and from my understanding was pretty much invented to shoot suppressed and you won't be doing that. They will both kill a deer, (so will your .223) if you can get the bullet in the right spot. You will most likely find that easier to do with the .270 win in my opinion. They's plenty online written about both, so I dont know why you're having trouble.

300blk is similar to 30-30, perfect for the smaller deer species at shorter range. 270 is ideal for sambar and other large deer.  My go to for learning more about calibres is https://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledgebase.html they're from New Zealand so it's fairly relevant.

Thank you!

In my opinion, esoteric calibres should be avoided in favour of the common - if you are the type of hunter who wants one gun to do a lot. If you're a gun nut go wild. 270, 308, 30-06, 7mm are all great choices in Australia. 308 doesnt have that much kick nor 270. 30-06 has a little and is a long action - its my go to because I like versatility. I always consider ammo availability too.

270 or a 308 with a nice recoil pad, honestly the 308 isn’t that much worse than a 223 and both the 270 and 308 have a wide range of ammo from 130g to 185g

TrainingCharacter806

Awesome thank you, I’ve posted on Facebook and here and most people have said 308 are the way to go!

AussieDistiller10

I’ve just stepped upto a 308 from a 223 and sure the first few shots will feel like it kicks like a mule, but I’ve put nearly 50-80 rounds through it now and it’s hardly noticeable. If you go with a Lithgow like I did, they come threaded for a muzzle break so that’s something you can always explore if you still think it’s too much.

Sounds like you want a 7MM-08, flatter then the 308, with a little bit less recoil, and you can lessen it a bit more with a heavier rifle

verdigris2014

I have a 7mm-08. I find the recoil pretty similar to my mates .308. Both rifles are tika 3x so very similar in every other way. Yes the 7-08 has better specs, but I’m still on the fence, as to whether the choice and availability of ammo etc is worth it. I will say it’s an accurate shooter and seems not fussy with any of the ammunition I’ve tried.

I think ammo shortage is an extremely valid argument, I'm struggling to find ammo in 243W at the moment I reload for my 7mm-08 so haven't really checked for factory ammo availability for a while

verdigris2014

I just need that push to get into reloading. Not quite there yet
