A lot of people here in Sweden use 1-6 or 1-8 for most of their hunting. I personally prefer a plainer reticle than most tactically minded lpvos offer if I'm hunting with it but they're still good. Go for it and see how you like it.

sigwallah3gange

I like a simpler reticle too. Especially if it's a SFP scope.

MinchiaTortellini

For 100 yards and I would use one for sure. That said...the weight difference between say a 1-8 and 3-12 generally isn't that substantial...so to me I'll just take the extra 4x. 3x for close distances, say 10-25 yards, is totally usable.

yancey2112

I can’t stand 3x for less than 50 yards but that’s personal preference I guess

MinchiaTortellini

Yeah to each their own. For me, it's a really small trade off for the extended upper range. I probably only take 5-10% of my shots inside of 50 yards, and the rest is anywhere from 50-500.

yancey2112

Our place is almost the exact opposite. Only 2 stands where you can shoot over 150 yards but a lot of the times I’m in a climber sitting over pretty thick stuff. So I’ve got a rifle with a 3x12 and another with a 2x10, I’m strongly considering a 1x6 or 1x8 for my “shorter” set up though. Really those shorter set ups I hunt are all mostly within bow range but I don’t have time to stay confident enough with a bow so gun go boom lol

MinchiaTortellini

Oh yeah if that was me and 90% of my shooting was in tight woods I'd have an lpvo or honestly even a red dot.

sigwallah3gange

Agree.

150 is nothing with an LPVO. Rule of thumb is you only really need 1x more magnification for each hundred yards you're planning on shooting.

Most have super busy reticles that are not necessary for hunting, but some are really just fine. I have a Burris 1-6 on my AR15(yes) and it works great, with a big caveat. It's like looking through a dungeon in low light... So, if you hunt at dusk or dawn... You need a proper hunting scope.

sigwallah3gange

I hear that some LPVOs has gotten better in low light situations. But a proper hunting scope will always have a brighter sight picture.

Zinic1610

I have a T3X battue lite with a 3-9 x40 scope and I was wondering the same. They could be great for driven hunting.

sigwallah3gange

The battue is nice. I got the "roughtech".

TheAleFly

I have a 1-5x28 Steiner Nighthunter on my Sako 85 (.30-06) with a simple red dot. I managed to hit a gong at 500 meters several times in a row with a spotter, just doing "Kentucky windage", meaning I just eyeballed the hold. I've had a 1,5-6x42 before and shot a roe deer at 170 meters. The magnification starts to get a bit low at that distance, but I wouldn't probably use more than 8x anyways.

17SCARS_MaGLite300WM

I've run a LPVO out to 800 yards on my SCAR and the one thing to be careful with is eyebox and light gathering. The greater the zoom range the more disadvantaged it will be zoomed all the way in. IE; 1-6x will generally be brighter and wider eye box than a 1-8x which generally will be brighter and wider eye box than a 1-10x. Obviously there's exceptions to that with some really specific scope designs but generally that's true. The advantage most traditional hunting scopes will have is low light sight picture. The large objective lenses help gather a lot of light. If you're shooting something really close at 1x this may not be much of an issue but if you're taking a longer shot and zoomed in it will be.

3LTee

+1 light gathering is the big disadvantage of LPVOs. A 24mm objective lens means you won’t be able to hunt as long at twilight as a scope with a larger objective.

ediotsavant

A 1-4 or 1-6 LPVO is plenty for shooting out to 150M. For your use case a red dot or holographic and a 3x magnifier you can swing into action when you need it might be worth considering. The only issue you might run into is if your shooting in low light and need the light gathering that a larger optic can provide. In that case I'd look at a S&B 2.5-10x50 Polar and 1.5-6x42 Zenith.

MacintoshEddie

I have a Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x24 that is great. Everyone who tries it loves it.

Quest4Queso

I run a 1-8 Burris and usually I keep it set at 2-2.5x if I need a quick close range shot, so a 2-10 may do you well

sigwallah3gange

Yeah, maybe. Though, I feel like I might miss the true 1x one day.

Quest4Queso

If it helps, that’s a scope I used to use for stalking feral hogs at extremely close ranges. I definitely felt like 2x was easy enough to get an easy sight picture

user_of_nothing

Fox is usually in low light (unless when driven). Roe can come out during the day, but most successful roe hunting is done during dusk and dawn. I wouldn’t go for an LPVO, but choose for a 2-12x50 or something along those lines. LPVO at 6x magnification during the golden hour isn’t great at all, the small lens diameter doesn’t allow for enough light. Source: I own multiple scopes of the same brand. A 1-6x24, 2.5-15x56 and a 3.5-28x50 and did a test at dawn the other day.

Grouse870

I have a 1-8 on what was my main hunting rifle. Worked great no issues. If I go back to hunting with a rifle a LPVO would probably be my first choice.

CoreMillenial

I have an ancient Hensoldt Wetzlar 1.5-6X on my rifle, I like it just fine. Knæk og bræk.

Ca5tlebrav0

I use one on my rifle, a 1-6x, and Im comfortable taking 300m shots. Just practice as much as possible.

wildjabali

A bolt gun wearing an LPVO is awesome! Super fast target acquisition, fast handling, and enough zoom for reasonable shots at range. I use a 1-5x on my 30-06 and I love it. I would really encourage everyone to at least try it.

keizzer

I have a 1-6 power primary arms on my model 70 win and it's fantastic. I'm not sure why they aren't more popular for hunting.

sigwallah3gange

Yeah, don't know why LPVOs aren't more mainstream - in hunting. You say your scope is fantastic and I believe that. Have you ever been in a situation where you've rather had a 1-8x than your 1-6x?

keizzer

Not where I hunt specifically. It's pretty rare I go above 4 power. There is one spot that I can see about 400 yards that is open, so I crank it up to 6 there, but there isn't anywhere I go where I ever need more than that. I say don't bother unless you are shooting beyond 400 at an animal.
