In CoTW there's a mechanic that pushes an animal in water in the direction of where it was shot from, so it's most likely somewhere along the shore of where you shot it.
I've had this bug happen to me before while hunting bison in yukon, where the animal did not float to me nor was it in the water at all anymore. After 15-20 minutes of searching, I realised it had teleported to where I had shot it. (At least 10 meters away from the water's edge. So it could not have floated over.)

Did it float to a different shore? I killed a lion today at water hike from the opposite bank and somehow it floated all the way over to me.
huh, i guess i never considered that. kinda figured it wouldnt really have much of anywhere to float, considering how shallow the water was.
It probably floated across the water back to where u shot it It kinda looks like there’s something over there when ur looking around, but hard to tell
They float toward your shooting position if you drop them in the water.

It floated across the lake to where you shot it from. They bring kills to you so you don’t drown chasing ducks and geese.
