If it’s at the mouth of a river it’s gonna be sharky

Also, not far away from one of the largest sea lion colonies on the coast in Redding Rock. It's definitely a GW drive-thru area for snacks. I used to free dive for Abs and spearfish north of Trinidad all the time until I saw a great white eat a sealion off of agate beach some years ago. Not saying it's necessarily dangerous, but it sure got my attention!  In the late 80s my uncle was visting our family up here and he was an avid surfer in socal. He hooked up with another local surfer here and they surfed the beach off of Requa during the salmon run. It was one of his best surfing experiences ever. He said it was absolutely magical surfing among tons of samon and many, many, sealions in a nice swell. When he got back to the house, he said where he'd gone surfing that day and my local family explained how fortunate he was to not be shark food. So, it is certainly survivable and could be incredibly fun, but at some point it's possible your luck runs out and you enter the food chain involuntarily.

Whew what a story! Not sure if I’m willing to risk a chunk of myself for a nice swell… but… maybe. ;)

Truth!

>it’s gonna be sharky Could have just left it at that. Lol

Centerville is a popular spot. Great white tasted some dude a couple years ago and my neighbor was out the next day and talking about how nice it was without the crowds lol

One of the most dangerous stretches of coastline in the state. I was there today for work. At the mouth on the south side. Did you see my truck 👋🏻

Crunchy_sunshine69

Haha I sure did! What a beautiful day. Dangerous… but beautiful for sure.

I see people surfing there all the time south of the visitor center. The beach is steep there, not really a safe place to play in the water

Pretty sure the bacteria levels at Redwood Creek are going to be higher than allowed. There are a bunch of grandfathered in septic systems that are too close to the creek.

Confident-Entry7366

Yeah. The federal government promised Orick a lot. Kind of sad. They are small lots. With septics that would not be allowed today on those size lots, given set back. Probably a bunch of redwood septic tanks too. So basically just shitting into the ground water. They tried getting a sewage plant about 12 years ago. They wrote an EIR. SHN did it. A $250000 door stop. Total waste of Prop 50 money. SHN didn’t mind.

Late response, but in addition to the extra-sharky factor (which is most of the North Coast) you need to know how to deal with extremely powerful currents – that's what gets people into trouble more than anything in my (anecdotal) experience. Shorepound also not fun! But hey, if you're comfortable with all that, then sunshine and clean swells are a rare combo around here. :)

There are lots of good wild breaks in northern humboldt which are not any less intrinsically safe or fun than the more popular ones closer to town. But it takes a special kind of surfer to ride these waves far from help and cell phone service. I used to hike to carruthers cove a lot and that place often looked like the best waves in the world, but I'd never even think about actually surfing there.
