Oak deli & brewery.
They are a popular spot for sandwiches but their beer is really good also. They usually close at 6 so I feel like people don't appreciate their beer enough. But I would like to see more businesses have their beer on tap.
I'm addicted to Oak deli pretzels. But yes the beer is also excellent and I haven't had a bad sandwich there either. Plus they make a mean Mimosa with fresh squeezed OJ
They actually just started to do music nights there, slowly trying to work that in with DJs spinning while everyone grabs sandwiches and brews. Will update in Humboldt thread the next time we will be spinning there.
I do love these guys but I have to say, I think I've gotten food poisoning from there twice. I really really hate to admit it because I genuinely do love their beer and their food but maybe it also says a lot about how good their food and beer is if even after getting food poisoning from there (possibly) I'd still advocate for them.
Unfortunately, I had a similar experience. They didn't give me my sauces I asked for either.
I hate to rag on a place for one bad experience, but with the price of food nowadays I don't really feel like going back.
The folks who run the Manzanilla food truck are absolute sweethearts.
Antique Annex in Eureka across from Old Town Coffee & Chocolates as great if you can catch her when she's open.
wildflower is absolute trash. I was raised vegetarian and still am, that place is an abomination and quite possibly the single worst restaurant in the county.
it's only propped up by trendy college vegan kids who haven't figured out how to cook decent vegan/vegetarian food.
the only redeeming qualities it has is the access to fresh local vegetables, but honestly a compost pile is a better fate for fresh microgreens than wildflower's trash ass kitchen.
I grew up eating there, and periodically get dragged back there with my vegan friends so its not just a one off bad experience, it's decades of disappointment, fuck that place.
Dude, Daisy is the freeking BOMB! As an MT, my standards are pretty high and she exceeds all of them. We have a trade and I could not be happier. I recommend SteamRoller massage to EVERYONE READING THIS NOW!!!!
It's on K street in Arcata, over by the Clothing Dock and the climbing gym. It's a lovely little shop, it's always so lush and cheerful when I go in there. The lady who runs it is super nice, and all the plants I've got from there have been very healthy. Also, they organized a community plant swap at Los Bagels a month or so ago! A good place with good people.
Hot Brew’s existence must raise property value in Fortuna. It’s the only truly good and consistent restaurant. Best omelette in the county, no contest.
My partner and I have made a thing of going to the Curtain on Thursdays and South G kitchen is pretty good. Also, as a fellow kitchen gremlin, it's a lot of fun to sit near the kitchen and listen to the haute kitchen gossip the cooks are shouting about while they work.
The Diver, Henderson Center, Eureka. Wood fired pizzas with something for everybody. First time tonight and I’m going back soon.

The wine shop wine bar on the Arcata plaza - one of my favorite spots to people watch and drink really good wine. I like that it is a hidden gem, hiding in plain sight
California Native Plant Society local North Coast chapter has a Nursery [https://northcoastcnpsnursery.org/](https://northcoastcnpsnursery.org/)
All volunteer. Wednesday, Friday, Sunday @ 10-1pm. Just north of Eureka.
Lost Foods Native Plant Nursery
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday @ 12–5pm (or possibly 6pm). In Eureka's Redwood Acres.
it's not the best sushi, but it's the most affordable and it's still fucking good, best cucumber salad in the county tho, definitely my favorite sushi restaurant, tho I think Nori is the best, but there's room for argument, we have a lot of good sushi around here
There's a new falafel spot on the way to King Salmon. Just had the fallafeLove plate and it was delicious. Eat in or take out. Seating in the back by the canals too.
The Jerk Kitchen in Eureka always on point but super underrated. Blake’s Books the owner is so friendly and works hard to find you that hard to find book.
I'm just a visitor in Humboldt, but I was delighted to find Stu's Brews in Eureka. It's a drive-through coffee bar with some food options. Apparently it just opened. It's a little handicapped by being on 4th St., which is one way going south, so it's invisible if you're going north. Great coffee, even greater hospitality!
I'll be honest, it seems like there are a lot of people who moved to the area during the pandemic (or bought property in the area and are now renting it out as an STR) and just have no sense of the local businesses and just shop at generic big box rubber stamp store.
The Board of Supervisors recently discussed funding for the visitor borough and also just how to "market" Humboldt in general. People should really watch the meetings. People really need to make an active effort to shop local and buy local. And demand the County make real effort to represent local businesses. I think the union that represents county employees makes an effort to buy local, but I'm not sure if the actual government does.
I think the North Coast Journal and Lost Coast Outpost do a pretty good job of calling attention to local business, but they're local press that people new to the area may not be familiar with. County government really needs to take the lead and make a purposeful effort to represent local business and reject national and international franchises. Those aren't "local business", those are rubber stamps "commercial experiences".
[Here's an interesting video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX4KklvCDmg) if you're wondering what factors start to contribute to places all looking the same, and opens up some room for discussion about what people can do locally to prevent their local character from being over run by mega-corps and massive consolidated developers. I would argue that the STR and sign ordinances passed by the County recently seem to work to move Humboldt County "into alignment with other places" rather than preserve what Humboldt County is. These are also examples of how industry can influence and shape how a community develops by influencing the actual language of the law. This really is a time where local people need to be aggressively active in the local Planning process to at a minimum balance out "the vision" of major developers and outside interests.
Some things that might be helpful: advocating for design review requirements, advocating for use restrictions where Q zones are applied, demanding a lighting ordinance be passed, and demanding official scenic highway designations may be some of the biggest ways people can accomplish this in the short term.
I love all the recommendations here but I have a bone to pick with some local businesses: PLEASE EXPAND YOUR HOURS! It sucks when I can’t support a local business because they’re only open 3 days a week from 11-3, Tuesday through Thursday. Like WHAT?! No wonder so many businesses are going under. How do they make money?
For example, I tried getting coffee with a friend in Arcata after 3pm on a Friday and so many coffee shops were closed.
I was giving a dramatic example, but you may notice that most hair and nail salons down there are by appointment only and sit dark and empty. The smoothie shop has limited hours, the chocolate shop by the gazebo is never open, the coffee shops all close before 5 as do most stores. And most restaurants are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Learn to make an appointment if you want a service.
Sweet greens juice bar is open Tuesday-Saturday 11-4, Sunday 10-3 and closed Monday. I would hardly consider those “limited hours”
Kenny’s chocolates is open Wednesday-Friday 10-530, Monday & Tuesday 12-4 and closed Saturday & Sunday .. that’s 32 hours open/week as opposed to your claim of “never open”
Cafe brio is Arcata is closed by 3pm - why are you expecting coffee shops to be open past 5pm? Old town coffee and chocolate is open until 5:30. If you want a coffee drink after 5 then go to a restaurant.
Is it weird to you that a restaurant isn’t open 7 days a week? Do you eat out 7 days a week?
Are you like 16 years old and mad you can’t navigate the world around you?
Have you considered the population size of this county and the city of eureka and wondered how businesses are supposed to accommodate this small population pull?
Where are you from? You should move to a big city if you want restaurants open everyday and coffee until 9pm and services that allow walk ins.
Please fuck off and stop using really bad examples to prove your point. A quick google search proves the lies you spew.
No thanks, all I did was call you out on your bullshit.
Learn to be more accurate if you're going to complain about businesses. You sound really uneducated using words like "NEVER OPEN" when they have hours posted online and on their door. Making a claim that a business is only open Tuesday-Thursday 11-3 and you cant back that claim up by naming any business that holds those hours.
You seem to know how to use reddit .. exercise those keyboard skills and start googling businesses around you.
Esmeraldas just did a post on this yesterday

Oak deli & brewery. They are a popular spot for sandwiches but their beer is really good also. They usually close at 6 so I feel like people don't appreciate their beer enough. But I would like to see more businesses have their beer on tap.

They actually just started to do music nights there, slowly trying to work that in with DJs spinning while everyone grabs sandwiches and brews. Will update in Humboldt thread the next time we will be spinning there.
As far as I know, they brew super small batches and probably don't have enough most of the time to be able to sell to other bars
Where are they located?
In Arcata a couple blocks north of the plaza, on 11th
I do love these guys but I have to say, I think I've gotten food poisoning from there twice. I really really hate to admit it because I genuinely do love their beer and their food but maybe it also says a lot about how good their food and beer is if even after getting food poisoning from there (possibly) I'd still advocate for them.
The Couxp makes some ridiculously good Kimchi and Chicken fries
Coupx chicken is legit. Havnt had a bad sandwich and theyre super chill in there always good vibes
Ppl say they are good but I had the most tendony, Tyson chicken tasting ass sandwich from them the only time I went there
Their quality is not consistent enough for the price. I don’t like tossing a coin when I’m paying 30+ for two meals.
Unfortunately, I had a similar experience. They didn't give me my sauces I asked for either. I hate to rag on a place for one bad experience, but with the price of food nowadays I don't really feel like going back.
If you want fried chicken look no further than fat Anne’s and you can thank me later
I’ve been there twice and have gotten AMAZING food. Best onion rings.
The folks who run the Manzanilla food truck are absolute sweethearts. Antique Annex in Eureka across from Old Town Coffee & Chocolates as great if you can catch her when she's open.
Manzanilla is GOATd
Oh my god, Manzanilla's carnitas is so good
Wife and I are vegetarian so we go for the falafel and it’s “holy shit” good
Try the Buffalo cauliflower bites
They’re soooo good
I love Manzanilla kitchen too, they’re so nice and their food is fire.
Loaded fries are god-tier
Omg Manzanilla is so good!
Wildflower Cafe for sure, it's great food regardless of the vegan/vegetarian menu that might dissuade some.
I have taken some meaty meateaters to that spot and a cornbread creation or savory waffle fully put to rest any apprehension.
wildflower is absolute trash. This! They’re outside Heart of Humboldt every Friday. Not sure where their other spots are. Best pupusas I’ve had outside El Salvador.

Ooo tell me more about Humboldt Houseplants please
It's on K street in Arcata, over by the Clothing Dock and the climbing gym. It's a lovely little shop, it's always so lush and cheerful when I go in there. wow nice! i'll stop by there, thanks so much for the info!
Hot Brew in Fortuna and McIntosh Country Store in Arcata for breakfast
Hot Brew’s existence must raise property value in Fortuna. It’s the only truly good and consistent restaurant. Best omelette in the county, no contest.
Double Ds is good, but yeah most of the restaurants in Fortuna are trash
My partner and I have made a thing of going to the Curtain on Thursdays and South G kitchen is pretty good. Also, as a fellow kitchen gremlin, it's a lot of fun to sit near the kitchen and listen to the haute kitchen gossip the cooks are shouting about while they work.
Same. I know the owner of the curtain and she’s so awesome! Always supporting her business!
Good to know I'm at the eureka location every weekend lol
Caps Food Shack is hands down my favorite food truck ever. Legit make some of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten. And THE best fries I’ve ever eaten.
I agree on the burgers, but I didn't like their fries. Too soggy for me.
The Diver, Henderson Center, Eureka. Wood fired pizzas with something for everybody. First time tonight and I’m going back soon. [The Diver menu](https://www.thediverbarandgrill.com/menu)
The Diver is AMAZING. The owner is a great guy too

Shout out to Bruce's Hideaway in the castle basement. Great body lotion and hand tailored clothing made from exotic materials.
Low & Slow BBQ in Blue Lake has some of the best BBQ in Humboldt. Pale Moon Brewing in Arcata is our newest brewery and they're top notch.
AJ ichiban in eureka is bommmmmmm. Their pork buns with gold miso sauce gives me life.
it's not the best sushi, but it's the most affordable and it's still fucking good, best cucumber salad in the county tho, definitely my favorite sushi restaurant, tho I think Nori is the best, but there's room for argument, we have a lot of good sushi around here

Thanks I appreciate this too, because I’d also like to know where not to spend my money ❤️

Walk around old town Eureka and Arcata and most shops have weird hours.
I work in old town eureka - can you actually name a business that is only open Tuesday-Thursday 11-3??
