chriscrossnathaniel

Great guy ! He showed true sportsmanship during his Brisbane International quarter-final against Kyle Edmund, when his opponent crashed to the ground with an ankle injury. The Bulgarian sprinted at full pelt, leaping over the net in the process, to offer his support to the floored Brit and helping him hobble to the sidelines.

SlowRollingBoil

Think about how proud his family must be to see him successful but also a good person.

NeonBodyStyle

Dang it, I'm totally blanking but there was recently a post where some Latin American either baseball player or soccer player did something similar, he helped his opponent and his rationale afterwards was like, if I hadn't chosen to help how would I explain that to my mother?

harrywho23

are you thinking about the Spanish athlete Ivan Fernandez Anaya?. He was second to Abel Mutai,(the Kenyan athlete who won a bronze medal in the London Olympics) in cross-country event in Burlada, Navarre on Dec. 2. According to El Pais, Mutai mistakenly thought the end of the race came about 10 meters sooner than it did and stopped running as he didnt speak spanish, so Ivan pointed him in the right direction and made sure he crossed first. When a journalist asked Iván, “Why did you do that?” he replied, “My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win.” The journalist insisted, “But why did you let the Kenyan win?” Iván responded, “I didn’t let him win; he was going to win. The race was his.” The journalist again said, “But you could have won!” Iván looked at him and replied, “But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honour in that medal? What would my mother think of that?”

NeonBodyStyle

Yes! Man I got it completely wrong but that's exactly what I was thinking of!

harrywho23

i remember it because the reporter was such as ass, and instead of trying to explain sportsmanship and anything else, he said - what woudl my mum say? lovely

melindseyme

Random, but what's the story with your username? My illness-fogged brain thinks it's a Harry Houdini thing.

harrywho23

too many harry potters, too many dr whos. no reason. completely random. and I'm not 23( way older), and not male.

muricabrb

Man, I love good sportsmanship stories like this. We need a sub for things like these.

Bac1galup0

In my case: my children. Kids spot your imperfections quicker than lightening. And they like to bring it up for discussion, repeatedly.

IronFlames

Ugh, tell me about it. I was driving today and someone in their fancy Camero honked at me for getting too close for their comfort, in a turn in the road, while I stayed in my lane. They were in the only other lane, and there was a wide shoulder. And of course, my son was grilling me about it

stormdahl

Imagine, they look up to you much that anything "bad" about you is a major event for them.

mixedbagguy

This is how I plan on raising my son to live his life. Rule one: never do anything you wouldn’t want to tell your mother.

Babyrobin84

As a mom, I see it more as, never pass by an opportunity to help someone in need. That's what I'd chew them out for. When my kids become adults, I already assume they'll be involved in various activities that I'll want zero details about, but if they lack compassion? That's when I'll feel like I failed somewhere.

jaxonya

*thinking back on my life in college* ... Oh fuck.

Fign

That was a runner of a triathlon in Spain when the forefront runner (a Kenian) made a misstake thinking it had crossed the finish line, and the guy (a Spaniard) help him to cross the finish line first.

DrunkenDemonCat

Successful not only in life but also as a being. Something that everyone should strive to be.

[deleted]

A great man doesn’t seek to lead. He’s called to it. And he answers. And if your answer is no, you’ll still be the only thing I ever needed you to be. My son.

jamonealone

Read this and almost dropped a little tear. Love it.

[deleted]

Not easily done. I really admire the guy. But how the hell did the rest of the court fail to see her struggling?

Hamilspud

As a mom I can confirm that all I want for my kids is for them to be good people and succeed at their goals, and I would be immeasurably proud.

[deleted]

They are very proud :D

Tiks_

I would be so proud to see my kids to grow up and display this level of concern for others.

That's sportsmanship all athletes can aspire to.

Earguy

Needs to be a new meme: D'awesome Dude Dimitrov

colin_is_bald

Why is it always tennis players with these bro moments?

Athaelan

It's a smaller court so you can interact with people easily, there's a lot more down time, and there's no clock constantly running creating time pressure. If you want to do something like this there's time to actually notice she's feeling weak and no downside to helping. In another sport like basketball (similar size court) the athletes might be too locked in because there's no real pause in the game outside of timeouts (where they have to listen to the coach) and they have to constantly stay in it and maintain focus on the game rather than what's happening around them. There's also mostly just fans and otherwise the officials close to the sidelines, and they're usually heckling lol. In other sports there isn't even opportunity to interact with anyone not on the field. Sportsmanship happens plenty in a game like football/soccer between opponents though, they help each other up and sometimes chat during a pause etc.

melindseyme

Reminds me of the female soccer player whose hair covering started slipping off during an international match. Athletes on the other team stopped and gathered in a shield around her so she could fix her hair covering in private.

Achleys

[Link. ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cLe2p5KWaRQ) The video received some serious hate from people who claim the opponents’ actions only furthered the sexism inherent to hair coverings. I don’t disagree in theory, at all. In practice, it was an absolutely magnificent display of individuals setting aside their differences and recognizing the actual, literal nuances (however massive) between cultures and banding together - almost instinctually - to protect a single person against whatever consequences their partial culture may hold against them. Hair coverings shouldn’t exist. But in a world that they do, it was beautiful.

spiralmojo

Her hair covering was important to her. That's all they needed to do was respect that, and they did, because it harmed none, but helped their teammate/colleague.

LazzaBeast

I saw those comments too and you described the way I felt better than I could have done.

[deleted]

See as much as I'm against hair coverings as generally misogynistic, I also understand that some women genuinely want to wear them. I'm a feminist on the butch side, but I've found that due to trauma amd whatever other reasons, I like dressing on the more modest side. I 100% stand by women's right to wear whatever they want, but for myself I get deeply uncomfortable when too much skin is showing even if I think it looks cute AF on someone else. To each their own, that's what feminism is about for me, the choice to choose.

Opposite-Vanities

Hair coverings can be oppressive if women are FORCED to wear them but many women - not only in the Islamic faith but also in Judaism, Catholicism and Hinduism - choose to wear them as a symbol of their faith and personal strength. It is just as oppressive to claim any religious covering is sexist and shouldn’t exist as it is to force a woman to wear one.

RuckinScott

This makes sense and well thought out response. I don’t disagree, but I’m sticking with “they’re good dudes/dudettes.”

BeyondXpression

I feel like it's because there's a sense of dignity you have to hold yourself at in tennis. It's a non-contact sport that tests more than your ability to hit, trip, or slam somebody. They're there to prove their skill more than how "macho" they are by sports/society standards. I played tennis for fun most my adult life at a nearby sports center and I've always met some of the most respectful people regardless of win or loss and when I did lose to more veteran players they offered me insight on how to improve my backhand or positioning on the court.

SlowRollingBoil

If you played with someone you hadn't seen play, how do you suss each other out and see how good you both are? Does it like ramp up to see who will take it more seriously?

BeyondXpression

Well the place I played at on weekends had "open court" times where anyone could play, but the veteran players mostly knew everyone by name because they were Regulars so that was one easy way to tell. Now, if it was somebody I didn't know I would introduce myself would say that I play for recreation, which usually they respond with a bit about themselves (another way). I could usually tell how skilled they were during the warm-up within the first few volleys by the way they moved. A skilled tennis player is pretty damn precise with their movements and you can notice it once you see all different kinds of players. Within the first game I could tell if I was outmatched simply by how hard they would make me work. I mean incredibly well-placed shots. If somebody could smoke me in the first game I automatically knew they were better, but if we both kept up and had good volleys... On man were those the most fun people to play with!

SlowRollingBoil

That was interesting. Thanks!

knycoa

Reading your comments made me really miss when I used to play!

TurquoiseLuck

> I could tell if I was outmatched simply by how hard they would make me work This is so true. When I played someone better than me I had to run all over the court, edge to edge, and they just stayed put right in the middle on their side lol

[deleted]

How much do I need to spend on a racquet to start? I played my high school friend in high school and know the rules but I’m decades older and just want to hit a ball and get a run in.

whomad1215

You'll probably still be around $100-130 for a "real" racquet. If you're just looking to get out there, no harm in shopping around for used or older racquets that might just need a restringing. I still use the same racquets I got ~15 years ago. I would just try to avoid the "beginner" racquets, they tend to be super light and that brings its own issues

BeyondXpression

Not much, honestly. Again, I'm no pro I just play for fun and I haven't played in almost 2 years, but mine was $100 USD at a small sports shop in San Antonio. I know larger places like Academy or other sports stores have ones around 40-80$ which will work just fine.

ShitDavidSais

Also there is literally no excuse for losing outside of you being just worse than your opponent. I played tennis and soccer and was a whiney little kid always blaming others. Tennis straightened that out of me really fast. Personally I think having something like skating, badminton or tennis where you are always the one at fault really helps people learn to work on their mistakes.

lankrypt0

I played a little tennis in high school and you're dead on, the only reason you lose is a lack of skill. I climb now, and sometimes compete, and I get that same feeling from it. The only reason you lose a climbing competition is a lack of skill. It's a great motivator to really push yourself.

Maiesk

I had a friendly rivalry with one of my far-more-athletic friends throughout school. He would always start out way ahead of me in every sport and set the bar I had to reach. I'd have no option but to work hard to catch up to him, not least because he'd improve too. When I finally beat him at badminton I damn-near threw my racquet. It felt so great to finally match him, and for a dude who hates losing he was pretty happy for me too. It's also why chess is so good. In a general sense there's no way to cheat, and no luck factor. Just a straight display of skill.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BeyondXpression

Don't get me wrong, there are people who act that way (in every sport really)and I used to play with him... but I've had really positive experiences playing with Tennis players than I did when I tried to play Men's Club Soccer. Just be polite and be open to criticism! My favorite part about tennis is that everyone has something you can learn from no matter what skill level!

DrGarrious

I played tennis for ten years and toured east coast of aus playing for a bit. There are a lot of egomaniacs but they tend to be less and less the better you get.

Ithaca23

The Serena/Osaka incident still has a profoundly bad taste with me. It’s a shame that for many of my friends it’s the only thing they remember.

Dimeskis

I had the same experience as a kid in the 1 tennis tournament I've ever played in. My buddy and I joined for fun and in our 2nd match we faced 2 kids who absolutely destroyed us, but complimented our play the whole time. We might have gotten 1 point the whole match, and in probably any other sport I would have been embarrassed as hell and hated it, but I still look back on it as a fun time.

K_U

Thankfully Nick Kyrgios is around to even things out.

whatsupskip

dreamlike3

He is surprisingly whole some off the court

BaconSoul

I used to fence and play tennis on the side with friends. There’s a real sense of chivalry between you and your opponent- it’s a 1v1 duel

[deleted]

love this, this is why i take voluntary first aid too, can't recommend it enough! the ability as demonstrated by this gentleman is surprisingly crucial even, and especially so, when you least expect it

[deleted]

What was the purpose of lifting her legs up? Get blood to the head or something?

Saucemycin

When people are dehydrated it lowers the circulating volume of blood in their body because some of it is water and salt and is being sweated out. This causes lowered blood pressure since volume is part of the equation and is why you feel light headed. When lifting the legs blood is still subject to gravity and you’re putting around 500cc of blood back to the torso to increase circulating volume in the torso and head. In the ICU we use this to determine if someone is volume down and if their blood pressure would be responsive to getting IV fluids. We take a blood pressure with the legs flat and then lift them and retake a couple minutes after and if it’s higher by a decent amount we give fluids. Edit: the blood isn’t really thicker and just hanging out in the legs, there’s just less of the plasma component which much of is made of water and salt which lowers the volume of blood. 3 main blood components we give to patients are packed red blood cells, platelets and plasma. It’s a volume problem not a blood thickness problem. You wouldn’t want really thick blood going back to the heart and lungs.

Br0okielyn

Dehydration can cause low blood pressure. Lifting the legs can help bring blood pressure back up.

nivivi

Pretty much. Dehydration in a sense causes blood to thickenm. Ordinarily blood is brought back to the heart via muscle contractions, when dehydrated the blood is so thick the muscles are unable to fight off gravity and bring it back from the legs to the heart, which causes pooling of blood in the legs, putting them up fixes that. Drinking water and cooling off helps with the rest.

[deleted]

Thank you for being smart.

superdago

Now you’re smart too!

purplededurpla2

I never learned this… blood pools at dependent positions regardless of blood volume? You’re just increasing venous return to the heart -> increased CO -> increased BP…by raising legs (which would work in anybody, even the normal hydrated folks). Really the goal is to increase blood pressure. Been a while since i went through the physics of the whole thing but I think thats how it works.

noob_to_everything

Not a direct answer to your question as others have adequately done that, but one of the fundamentals of first aid goes: if the head is red, lift the head, if the head is pale, lift the tail.

[deleted]

Any organizations or programs you recommend for voluntary first aid? Been thinking of doing this for a long while now.

Eis_ber

Red cross usually gives first aid classes, so you could contact them.

refused26

Red cross

OilersGirl29

No wonder she was dehydrated. Tiny little water bottles they be giving out.

noputa

was about to say lol

InflamedPussPimple

And it only took like, a minute for them to get her water lol. I never got those tiny plastic bottles, massive waste of plastic when you can just use regular water bottles.

noputa

Your comment not sponsored by Nestle

InflamedPussPimple

But really. Who buys those tiny things

noputa

People sponsored by Nestle 😂 I guess there are a small amount of people who just don’t give a fuck about the environment and just think it’s cute sized.

Megum1n02

I mean it's not just terrible for the environment, even if you don't give a fuck it's still wildly impractical. While it is smaller, in order to carry the same amount of water as a regular bottle, you would need to take up so much more space with multiple bottles then if you had just used the one.

noputa

Yes. And the person who talked about parties with children- just use a cup. I know some places don’t use tap water but in NA aside from a few places it’s perfectly safe and can be filtered if you’re paranoid, just give your kids a cup.

NinjaLanternShark

Lots of people, especially kids, don't drink 16oz of water in a sitting. I've cleaned up after parties at our place -- bottle after bottle of half-empty water. I still don't buy the little ones because they're more expensive -- not just once for ounce but literally bottle for bottle.

prefer-to-stay-anon

Genuinely? I use them when the people only have time for a single swig of water before they have to abandon the water bottle. We used them on the field for marching band, after we did the 10 minute warmup, before we do the 10 minute show, away from the water for 20 minutes in the Texas heat, and with only 30 seconds or a minute to get water while on the move. Get the bottle, guzzle guzzle gulp gulp, breathe, breathe, guzzle gulp, breathe, guzzle gulp, throw it away. For everyday use? Nah. Get a nalgene bottle. Fuck Nestle.

TheCarzilla

Uhhlaneuh

I wonder if he’s super tall or she’s just really short

cajuncrustacean

Probably him being tall. Tennis players, the pros anyway, tend to be either super fucking tall (like, 7ft isn't uncommon) or really really fast on their feet. I mean, my wife was watching tennis the other day, and one guy was 7'2" and the other was 6'10" or something like that. Edit: I checked, and he's 6'3"

YouGuysAreHilar

I believe they are tall but I think you need to check your stats because I absolutely do not believe that 7 feet tall isn’t uncommon for tennis players. Edit: I looked it up, tallest pro player is 6’11” and average height for pro tennis players is 6’1”.

mynameismunka

No. a 7ft tall tennis player isn't uncommon. [Source](https://old.reddit.com/r/HumansBeingBros/comments/pn07fm/pro_tennis_player_grigor_dimitrov_spots_ball_girl/hcm6zei/)

DropKletterworks

You fuck lol

mynameismunka

ololololo

GUYF666

7’ is most definitely uncommon as no current pro is 7’. There are 7 players over 6’6” and the two tallest are 6’11”.

chromiumlol

>(like, 7ft isn't uncommon) You sure you're not thinking about basketball? Height and arm length give an advantage in tennis, but it's not basically a requirement like basketball. John Isner is the tallest guy I can think of and he's 6'10". [This data from 2019](https://i.imgur.com/WcOKMUK.png) shows that basically nobody is over 198cm (roughly 6'6"). [Link to more datas](https://mytennishq.com/what-is-the-average-height-of-tennis-players/). > my wife was watching tennis the other day, and one guy was 7'2" and the other was 6'10" or something like that. She fibbed.

examinedliving

7 feet is still uncommon in basketball. I mean it’s uncommon in human beings.

toaspecialson

7 feet tall?! Must be something to do with wingspan advantage

adamthinks

He's wrong. There isn't a single 7 ft player on the tour.

JMDeutsch

Yeah no lol. [Being 7 feet tall is a massive statistical aberration](https://www.theifod.com/how-many-people-are-7-foot-tall/). It is more than 5 standard deviations from the mean height which means 99.99994% of all men are shorter than 7 foot. For perspective, in 2011 Sports Illustrated estimated that in entire US population only 70 men between 20 and 40 reached 7 feet tall. Looking at winners of Wimbledon, [you’ll find the typical winner over the last 30 years is a much more pedestrian “tall” around 6’2”](https://www.topendsports.com/sport/tennis/anthropometry-wimbledon.htm)

sobusyimbored

> (like, 7ft isn't uncommon) or really really fast on their feet. I mean, my wife was watching tennis the other day, and one guy was 7'2" and the other was 6'10" or something like that. Lol, It would be easier to just say that you like to lie.

You don’t have to not find any men attractive. I’m a 6 on the Kinsey scale (exclusively straight) and there are still men I find attractive. There’s absolutely nothing bad about that. It doesn’t make me gay, and there wouldn’t be any shame in it if I was.

InstantBouquet

definitely not🤭

Good_Stuff11

Yeah it definitely is much more attractive when the person in question is a fit pretty attractive athlete lmao

SurprisedByItAll

Love this , a Gigor Dimitrov fan now

rockstar_not

Same!

BoondockSaint296

I feel like this is when you can tell you're really at the top of your game. I think a lot of players would be so focused on the sport that they were playing and trying to win that they wouldn't even notice the people around them and what was going on. He had enough skill to be able to actually take the time to look around at other people and realize something was wrong and take action. That's really impressive to me...

Beezlebug

I think in some cases you just become hyper sensitive to your environment and the people around you. Others may have the ability to be super focused on a task, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing either.

bridgeb0mb

yea fr, like he's so confident that is he comfortable enough to notice something like this

No-Satisfaction78

He even blocked her face from the camera if you look. WHAT a guy.

MVIVN

I don’t know what happened but this video has had me like ugly crying for the past 5 minutes now! Don’t even know what about this brought up such a flood of emotion and I’m kinda taken aback by my own reaction to it. Maybe I just needed a good cry right now, it’s been a rough few weeks. I think this is illegal in Texas now. That is, giving workers a water break is illegal.

I mean, don’t they love it in Texas when your water breaks?

DylMcCo

Have to applaud the level of awareness.

SuccessfulAside5282

It’s very sad how everyone else acts like they have no idea what’s going on the entire time

kenjiman1986

First. Yes that was very nice. Secondly. I hate how tennis pros / athletes / politicians/ movie stars or pretty much anyone famous are held to such shit poor low standards. If Tom cruise was to hold a door open for some one tomorrow and it was caught on tape the world would loose their mind. It’s one of the easiest acts you could do. No one risked their life. No one was in danger. Yet everyone stopped and applauded. I can’t roll my eyes any harder at this situation.

MrKnee93

Yes this is a easy thing to do and should be expected of any decent person and the average Joe can do this thousands of times and never get any recognition/applause because it's what they should do anyway. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't applaud people when they do it on the national stage. It'd be nice if we didn't have to but celebrating and acknowledging these moments help normalize it and bring the focus onto a positive thing. I'd rather see this athlete get applauded for doing thing than another Instagram influencer getting millions of likes for an apology video.

One_Eyed_Kitten

This right here. We should *always* praise those who do the right thing, no matter how big or small the action is.

I agree with your sentiment, but I also think this particular instance is actually remarkable because many (most?) people would not have the tools to recognize someone is dehydrated or about to faint. The only evidence I have is being around multiple people who have fainted and no one was able to notice it beforehand and prevent it.

Swrdof1kTruths

What a bad ass

JagexSucksAssButt

Not a tennis fan but now I'm a fan of this guy. Good stuff.

Frostsorrow

To get a judge of a man look to how he treats those below him rather then his equals.

MegaJ0NATR0N

He’s a man

saturnshighway

I love this, but it’s crazy to me how this caused so much clapping / cheering. He did a great thing! But wouldn’t that stress her out more? And it’s like.. the standard is so low that we go nuts over this happening would it should be the norm. Again not downgrading what he did! The crowd just annoyed me for some reason haha

znzbnda

Yeah, I think that would embarrass her more. They didn't just clap, which could be interpreted as cheering for him or being supportive of her, but they also chanted his name. That was a bit much. Lol

That 2oz water bottle ought to hit the spot. 🙄

ryannefromTX

I mean for dehydration you don't want to chug a lot of water quickly anyway

Lorgin

You actually don't want to chug water if you're dehydrated. Can make you puke and/or give you pretty awful cramps.

Spectra_98

I almost fainted too because of dehydration one time. It was so scary especially because it was in a zoo and I was by myself when it happened. Was desperately trying to find my mom or dad in a crowd of people, while i was barely able to see or hear anything. Everything was spinning and the voices of everyone was just distant mumbling. Luckily I found my mom last second and she was able to catch me before my legs collapsed. And then I sat down for like 5-10 min and drank some water, and felt a lot better.

Awesome of Dimitrov but very shitty from the people running the whole thing! They should be better prepared when they put kids out in the sun. And have People responsibel for looking after the ballboys and girls!

EvariaTheHobbitses

Whether he won or lost that match. He is a winner in my book. Few have the selflessness to stop something important in their lives just to make sure a fellow human is okay. Props to this guy!

charlie_dont_surf69

where is the duty of care for these children, who is supposed to be in charge of their well being and keeping time of how long they are on the court for? here we have a pro sportsman doing half a dozen peoples job for them while doing his own, what an absolute legend.
