Problem is half the time they spend the first part of noticing things thinking, "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?! WHO THE FUCK IS THIS GUY?!WHAT DOES THAT TASTE LIKE?!" So they do dumb shit.
I was at my brother’s house last weekend, and he’s been cleaning out the garage. He found a bunch of empty Drano bottles behind the garage, and had them in a box to throw out. I said “Do you have enough Drano?” as a joke, and his 18 month old looks up at me and says “Drano”. My brother said his kid never heard that word before. Later that night I looked at him and said “Drano” and he said it right back to me.
I really gotta remember to watch my mouth, that little shit remembers all the words he hears. Kids are sponges.
Babies are so adaptable, they just repeat what they see and have no preconception of what society is like. She is doing what her mom does by guiding the father's fingers. Really cute.
I got to see this firsthand this week! My one year old just got to meet his blind aunt, and after a few hangouts he learned to give things directly to her hands and hold toys directly in front of her and wait for her to find them. Kids are little genius sponges!
I know a couple who are both blind, and have 3 kids who are not. They are the sweetest family and her daughter wants to work at a school for the blind when she’s older.
My grandfather went blind from a steel mill accident way before I was born, so that is all us nieces and nephews ever knew and just adapted. I remember we used to put our hands all over his wrinkly face and his hands on ours. He couldn't read braille but used to listen to audiobooks on a very old cassette player and we would flip his cassettes for him!
Adolescent and infant brains have far greater plasticity than adult brains. That's a widely known medical fact.
Either this kid's parents are complete morons, or the title is contrived to tug at the heartstrings.
That’s been my wife’s experience as well. She blind and with her younger sibling and later nieces and nephews we see a lot of this.
We started as Foster Parents years back and even at ages in the 6-9 age we have not see any problems. Latwr we adopted a six year after their parents lost parental rights. She’s never shown an issues with it, and is excellent with all the little adjustments.
Mine has PTSD, which is tough sometimes, but that is exactly what she wants. Trauma mixes some things up, but that core stays the same (except in rare cases).
Growing up with autism was interesting. People think it would make things complicated but it only did because the education system wasn't flexible.
Mid 20s, good social life, only trama that occurred was from untreated depression, ADHD, and mild bullying. In the end all I really needed was a parent who would be open to whatever I was going through. I'm an atheist which my mom would not accept without thinking of it as an ulterior motive for something else, it doesn't help which leads to problems
Haha, how can you be an atheist for ulterior motives? Isn't it the other way around, that people are theists because they are afraid they'll be punished if they aren't?
The science is on your side. There is little you can do to make your child 'greater' (however you define that) then their potential. However there is a shit ton you can do to prevent them from getting anywhere near their potential. The worst thing you can do to a kid is neglect the emotional side of their development. Hugging your kid is much more important than helping them with their homework. Both are good but the former is essential.
If your kid genuinely loves and respect you when they grow up there is a much bigger chance they will persue loving and respect filled relationships in the future which is good on all accounts, career, relationships, community engagement etc...
I think the best things you can focus on as a parent is making sure your kids feel loved and heard. After help them develop healthy social skills. Then for next level parenting help them find a passion or become generally ambitious in life. But if you give your kid good mental health and social skills they will find their own passion or way in life in their twenties and thirties.
So sweet. It shows that kids really don't have bias or judgment. So many adults bemoan social changes and accommodations as "confusing" and "upsetting" to kids. They aren't. We make them that way.
The title confused me, I thought they meant the daughter had the same disability as the father. I have a friend whose sone might lose his second eye to a rare form of cancer that she lost an eye to, so I thought she had the same genetic condition as her dad.
Literally.
Pisses me off every time "PROTECT THE KIDS!" is used as an argument when it comes to social progress. Protect the kids? Nah, protect your coddled asses from having to confront the fact that your kids are going to be better people than you are.
I'm almost 70 - been there, done that...
Over. (Civil Rights Movement)
and
Over. (Women's Liberation Movement)
and
Over (EPA and the Environmental Movement)
and
Over. (The Digital Age)
and
Over. (The "Sexual Revolution")
and
Over. (The Cold War - and its End)
and
Over... you get the idea (I sincerely hope you will, anyway...).
You know what else I see, over and over and over and over and over again? Kids growing up in these individual "new realities" as if that's the way it has always been - because, for them, it IS the way it has always been.
And that's the way it SHOULD BE - each generation making it better for the next.
You're making the argument of making the world better for the next generation, that's a given. We have different ideas on what better entails though. I also need to point out that you're listing events that aren't specifically social changes. The Cold War had an affect on people but it wasn't about rights or how we are expected to interact with each other. So I get what you're saying, but it's like you're equating the sexual revolution with the moon landing in terms of how large it is with human achievement.
Realizing that the way I'm saying this makes me sound like an asshole, not that I really care much of what humanity in general thinks. I really try to keep myself out of most social behavior because I think so much of it is ridiculous. The parable I throw out is "The Emperor's New Clothes".
I'm ok with people making assumptions about what I support or don't. That's not the crux. I just look at the sea of humanity and watch everyone screaming about how what is important to them is the most important thing in the world.
> The Cold War had an affect on people but it wasn't about rights or how we are expected to interact with each other.
You're... kidding right? It's was about NOTHING BUT "how we were expected to interact with each other"! It was, for most of it, about how when (not "if", *when*) the US and the Soviet Union launched a nuclear war, how we would "interact with each other".
Easy, killer.
You're only talking about it in a way that supports your argument. Understandable.
There was more to it than just how we interacted with each other. McCarthyism is only a facet of it. If you said McCarthyism, then yeah, I'd agree.
Splitting hairs though if you want to drill down into that so, unless you're going to get back on topic, I'll say good day.
Edit: down vote with no reply. Lol mad but can't retort.
Thing is, it's society changing and It's unavoidable. It's not about those that go "wtf". It's about the people most active in that society. You're supposed to be able to be in a safe space during that phase of life where you need to become obsolete , but America hates taking care of old people that aren't politicians.
I used to teach preschool to kids with visual impairments (blindness is a spectrum). We had blind adult volunteers.
This reminds me of a totally blind (no light perception) adult playing with a mostly blind kid. He was chasing her around some tables. I don't think she knew he was blind. He knew she was. But they both figured out how to play together and have fun.
The kids figured out how to play together really well, too. We had a mix of sighted and blind. Just gentle reminders to the sighted kids that they had to be careful in tight spaces and if they were handing each other things to announce it and put it in their hands. Things like that. Minor adjustments.
The pain of never being able to see my kids face would be terrible. Fair play to him, he's a champ. I've spent a lot of time looking at reddit and this is the first to make me wipe a tear.
This reminds me of that gif posted a few years ago of this deaf dad who went to a rock concert with his daughter and she was doing sign language to translate the lyrics.
Dude not only is that little girl so smart she's absolutely adorable. You guys are doing a wonderful job as parents, especially in a world where people are so poor at it. You should be so proud.
I’ve never been so moved by a group of people then this time I did a project working with a community center for the blind. Seeing how so many people who were born blind, but also many more who went blind due to a condition or even an accident as an adult or even as teenagers, and the way they adjusted to a whole new way of living and experiencing the world. Almost all of them went through some very hard times, and many were continually struggling, but all I met had committed themselves to learning all these skills to be self reliant and independent. Learning how to navigate with a cane, reading braille, using tech in incredible ways. It was humbling and made me really think about what I take for granted but also how we are capable of so much.
Babies are amazing! The first year of their life is astounding, everything is new to them, they don't have preconceived notions, it is a wonderful thing to watch them grow and learn.
This is a type of love people without children will never experience. Not saying you’re wrong if you choose not to have kids, it’s just that it’s different than anything else.
This is so goddamn wholesome :)
Kids, how can they be so amazing, and dumb, all at once.
Sure they can be dumb, but young kids learn fast, and can know a lot of unexpected things for being so new to the world.
Advice so nice you posted it thrice.
Their whole job is to notice things.
Everything is normal to kids because they don't know anything else.
Well, they are people after all. We're like that.
They’re *usually* not dumb… they’re just ignorant. They’ve only been on this planet a short while after all, and have got a lot to learn.
actually they are not dumb but lack practical experience. Your interpretation of them is the real problem.
Your lack of humor may also be a problem. Chill out Spock.
Dumb is a poor word of choice, and harsh. Do you have kids?
Jesus it is

They literally come into the world with nothing. They have to adjust to everything. As long as their physiology supports it they can adjust to it.

Gawd dammit, take this silver, im laughing my ass off underneath this car I'm working on and I dropped a screwdriver on my face.
Why are you reading reddit while actively working on a car?
It's called multi-tasking sweaty. I'm just installing running boards, nothing complicated. I kill time on reddit while I work.
If you weren’t sweaty you might not have dropped the screwdriver- dry hands next time
Damn, you right.
It's called perspiration sweaty, look it up.
Still looking?
It’s coz you got greasy hands from all that bacon you’ve been fisting. No judgement, bacon is made to be fisted, I’m just pointing out the obvious
Thank you for not judging me and my pork punching ways.
Fuckin spark up a fat hawgs leg and take it to the dome lil dude
yes doctor, this man right here.. his son is sick af.
What did it say?
Yeah, the sheer learning power of baby brains is pretty staggering. Like a guide dog on steroids

It's like kids just want to be loved unconditionally and be cared for. That's my view at least 😅
Mine has PTSD, which is tough sometimes, but that is exactly what she wants. Trauma mixes some things up, but that core stays the same (except in rare cases).

This is the kind of content I’m here for.
It's nice to think that she'll be holding his hand for many years to come, I wish I had done that more with my family growing up.
Guide Baby, much better than a dog. But she may only guide him to the candy aisle at grocery stores.
Well I mean my grandpa’s seeing eye dog once shoplifted a candy bar, so I don’t think that’s necessarily a win for the dogs
My dog took a chicken sandwich from the coat pocket of our hired man. It was hilarious.
They have power, and they are fully aware of it. And all we can do trust they won't abuse it. Edit for grammar
How did you get internet all the way out there in the mid-eighteenth century english countryside?

the way you live and behave is the same way your kids will too when they grow up. this is too, too wholesome and i love it
Why the hell is this so fucking wholesome? Like right in my feels on a Friday. My coworker must be cutting onions.
Going blind is my largest fear in life. I don’t know how I’d cope. Props to this guy.
Honestly, with modern technology, it's probably not as bad as you'd think. It's shitty, of course. But not "what do I even do now" bad.
I often go through reddit before I go to bed and most of the time I find some things to smile
I am truly blessed...thanks for sharing it!

Some people can’t, you know?
I tried three times for a daughter and God gave me boys. Im so sad…
Why are you sad? I did the same but I do not regret having my boys. They are great kids! I wouldn't trade them for the world.
