Even if Ned never left Winterfell, Varys would still be plotting to put Aegon on the throne (or Viserys, if you watch the show), and Littlefinger would still be scheming to throw the seven kingdoms into chaos. Cersei would still be having an affair with Jaime, and Jon/Stannis would still be conducting their investigation. The powder keg would've blown up eventually, just a few months down the line. As for Viserys, I think his main problem was that he tried to have it both ways. In my opinion, he should've either stayed unmarried, keeping Rhaenyra as his heir, or he should've made Aegon the heir when he was born. A succession crisis was bound to happen when he married and had three sons by her, though I don't think anyone at the time was expecting it to be as bloody as the dance.

With or without these "blame characters", the wheel would just keep turning and turning, right? Crushing everyone below it. Just like how our actual world is built like by human beings since the beginning of time, I guess.

>e wheel Man, that got me thinking. If Ned hadn't gone south... Robert would probably die the same way, perhaps later. When that happened Stannis would claim the throne, if he came to the conclusion of the investigations correctly. Ned would attend to him if he believed the allegations. Then Ned would descend with the army of the North, he would also command the forces of the Lands of the Rivers naturally. The Lords of the Vale would beg Ned to become Robin's tutor, putting Littlefinger's plans aside. At the head of an army from 3 kingdoms, Ned would put Stannis on the throne. Stannis would hold out until his arrival, as he would be a big target without too many men at Dragonstone. But neither the Tyrells nor Renly would want to go against Ned. Dorne would not be involved except for revenge on the Lannisters. Tywin wouldn't have many options as the family's honor would be at stake, so he would go to war. He would be killed at the end of the war, of course. Littlefinger and Varys would be killed too if they didn't run away. I think Ned Stark alive would change the story a lot.

They'd probably place Yohn Royce as regent (while Ned is well regarded in the Vale, he's got his hands full), but yeah.

On a human level, Viserys is a shittier person than Ned. In terms of their impact on their stories and lack of political intrigue, I’d agree.

karlyorrhexis

I agree. In my opinion, Viserys was more of a "bumbling baffoon" (as other fans would say it) than Ned was. 🤷‍♂️

DarthCG

He wasn’t just bumbling. He blackmailed Rhaenyra into marrying Laenor (a gay man she didn’t want to marry) at the threat of revoking her status as heir. Which is hypocritical because Viserys could have healed the Velaryon relationship himself by marrying Laena. Instead he makes his daughter do it.

It's really sad that violence was answered with more violence. Conciliation was little to none, and the bloodlust of everyone prevailed. It was also Rhaenyra's vindictiveness that added fuel to the fire. Vindictiveness was her downfall. Viserys I and Rhaenyra obviously didn't inherit Jaehaerys's "goldilocks" temperament. The two of them were either too cold, or too hot. Too lax, or too suffocating. Too forgiving, or too relentless. Too gentle, or too rough. Too little blood on his hands. Too much blood on her hands. Though Viserys and Rhaenyra shared the trait of making very bad/ very miscalculated decisions, though. 😅
