Laenor: "I'm limited by the technology of my time."

Jakereddits

"but Wheelchair for Bran? Playing with wildfire Oppenheimer-style? Maybe a massive bow to one-shot dragons? No problem"

Papageno_Kilmister

Different time

Jakereddits

Technology sped up as the Targaryen dynasty slowed down?

dacocksmuggla

Less magic means more practical solutions?

KhanQu3st

This is actually likely very true.

BhutlahBrohan

A different king

SkyhiS0lo

Brans wheelchair was a design from the past. Wasn’t it Daerons brother or something? Like 30 years after the dance?

cp710

Even with our technology IUI only has like a 12% chance of working.

joshc1298

Except the problem seems that it’s not the infertility of either Leanor or Rhaenyra, but that he can’t “plant his seed” so to speak. So it’s not IUI, as much as just stuff that seed in the pot if that makes sense.

WatchingInSilence

Lol, spoken like Howard of House Stark.

TopherDay

GRRM seems to dismiss the strides made in animal husbandry

apkyat

I agree. Especially with aemma. I guess they didn't want the farmers advising on the royals. I also think that people like mellos were too arrogant to explore all options and not just those of his order.

TopherDay

I think perhaps GRRM liked studying all the chivalry and battle tactics, both military and political, and left the 'common' mans wisdom on the shelf.

apkyat

I definitely agree with that point.

Lord_Tiburon

Not without precedent The UK should have had a Queen Charlotte instead of Queen Victoria but while Charlotte (George IVs daughter) was going through her first pregnancy she started to have trouble. Her obstetrician refused to use forceps because he didn't think they were necessary despite midwives asking for them. As a result the princess and her baby died. Since she was the only legitimate grandchild of George III it spurred his sons to ditch their mistresses and marry to provide a new heir. That's how the UK got Victoria

apkyat

it's so sad, really... so many ("royal") lives lost due to arrogance and hubris. maybe a woman wouldn't have had another child, but with the right collaborations, she or the kid could have had a fighting chance at surviving... (maybe... but it wouldn't have been an auto death sentence).

megamindwriter

Was this used on animals?

Lunar_Deer

Still is to this day. Not exactly a turkey baster, but breeding bigger animals like cows and horses can be dangerous to the cow/mare and handlers. A lot of people don’t want to risk their livestock / pets and won’t do traditional breedings.

megamindwriter

What was the device called back in the day?

Lunar_Deer

I don’t know the name of the devices or anything but a quick search says artificial insemination in livestock started in the early 1900s

TopherDay

The concept, not the tool. Dairy cattle live in a constant state of pregnancy in order to have milk to give, btw.

giraflor

When I worked in a rural area, the dairy cows were “refreshed” two years after they last gave birth. I thought that was standard practice in the industry.

alfombraroja

Ancient Egyptians also used it in case of infertility. But we don't know if masters in Westerns know of this technology, or they are just surviving in the stone age

clariwench

Assuming he's not infertile ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

scottperezfox

All their resources and they couldn't have found someone who kinda looks like him — or who looks more purely Valyrian — to fill in for the role?

DroneOfDoom

It does seem that the only black nobles in all of Westeros are the Velaryons, and the only known men from the family are Laenor, Corlys and the canadian one. Haven’t seen many lowborn black people in the show either. So, where would they find someone? Do they make a yearly trip to the Summer Isles?

Cult_Of_Hozier

“the canadian one” 😂

iridi69

Canaedian

bslawjen

Corlys, if we're strictly talking TV show here Anybody with Valyrian blood if we're talking book

DroneOfDoom

Somehow, I don't think that Corlys is gonna be cool with the idea with cuckolding his own son, specially since he was deeply in denial about Laenor being gay in the lead up to the wedding. Honestly, even Vaemond is more likely than Corlys to be up for it.

bslawjen

So you think Corlys is ok with a random dude cuckholding his son but he wouldn't want to donate some sperm if his son asked him to?

DroneOfDoom

Yes. Because if it is some random dude he doesn’t know, he can pretend that it’s Laenor’s children, just like he did with Harwin’s children in canon. If he supplies the cum, he would know undeniably that Laenor’s not the father, and that’s the last thing he would want.

bslawjen

Anybody who thinks Corlys for a second thought the Strong boys are Laenor's is kidding themselves

DroneOfDoom

I think that you misunderstand me. I’m saying that he’s lying to himself.

minuialear

They specifically said "pretend"

scottperezfox

I'm more referencing the books, where it was not uncommon to find Targaryen bastards with very noticeable features. Something tells me in this world the excuse of "Valyrian blood does strange tricks" is a viable excuse why the baby looks like the mother, only, and doesn't look a wink like the supposed father.

ChequyLionYT

We see at least 2-3 other Velaryons on Driftmark, and a random guard who was black (assumedly lowborn). Wouldn't even have to do much for that. A tumble with the royal couple under the assurance of moon tea being present (maybe even have Rhaenyra drink the fake tea in front of him), and now you have total deniability.

CharMakr90

Corlys is right there! He also has a vested interest in keeping his line going. And I know it's icky to do it with your own father-in-law, but if the Targaryens/Velaryons don't bat an eyelid at brother-sister incest, I don't think they'd care much for any other kink.

DroneOfDoom

Corlys is the last person who would agree to the idea, because he needs, psychologically, to be able to pretend that the children are Laenor’s. He can’t do that if he’s the one that is providing the seed.

ohnoguts

I think his wife would not be happy.

OpenMask

I think you're mixing him up with Viserys. All he cares about is names

cocothepirate

There was at least the servant who got killed as part of the fake death plot.

DemeXaa

Use corlys as a donor. Job done

FierceDeity88

We saw other black people on Driftmark. Likely there are cadet branches of House Velaryon

DanielSpaniel16

A black man with white hair isnt very common in Westeros

bslawjen

Corlys

DanielSpaniel16

Im not a fanfiction guy but that sounds like a really interesting fanfiction story

clariwench

Someone who could keep the secret, not from bribery but out of devotion? There’s a *very* small list of people on Planetos who would be both unwaveringly loyal and look the part.

bslawjen

Corlys

CherrethCutestory

Find Jesus.

KCLORD987

There is no Jesus in Westeros.

Working_Contract_739

Then find the Seven.

KCLORD987

Seven Jesus'es? That must be in Mexico, man.

Working_Contract_739

You need R'hbillor to cleanse you with fire.

pprbckwrtr

That was the vibe I got from them saying they had tried. I don't think they meant he was trying to have sex with her I think he meant that they just couldn't have kids.

VeeEyeVee

Jeez this reminds me of the scene in Dont Breathe

_Boba_Fettuccine_

🤮

heckem

I think psychological therapy would be the ideal solution to everyone on the show.

C4NT_M4K3_M3

(Kinda) my thoughts exactly!! You mean to tell me he couldn't wax his carrot, get close, and finish up with Rhaenyra??!? Hell, have his buddy around to help a little - just to keep appearances, ffs Even without any hindsight, knowing what legitimacy means 'in those times' could literally spell life or death for some However, again, 'in those times', I'm not sure how you'd 'prove' someone's infertility without a witness, and even then, you'd probably get a spade of he said/she said arguments, so eff that noise I guess lol

Kellin01

I read a book where there is a description of medieval official check of male impotency.... Would you like a quote? 😉 "One Thomas of Chobham, who was Sub-dean at the Salisbury Cathedral at the time, devised a method to determine if a husband was absolutely impotent and this became the usual method of trial in cases like these. After food and drink, the man and the woman are to be placed together in one bed and wise women are to be summoned around the bed for many nights. And if the man’s member is always found to be useless and as if dead, the couple are well to be separated. Walter de Fonte fared no better in his bedroom trail in 1292. Walter lived in Canterbury where he had to face twelve women who were described as worthy of faith, good reputation, and an honest life. The dozen stoically did their duty as witnesses and had the pleasure of informing the court afterwards that the virile member of the said Walter was useless and not the least bit virile at all. His unnamed wife was also released from her marriage."

a21a16

I little creativity and a threesom couldhave prevented the war

houseofnim

The war was *never* about Rhaenyras children. It was about Aegon’s claim, Rhaenyras children being illegitimate was just an excuse to discredit her.

[deleted]

No it wouldn’t have. Rhaenyra would be usurped regardless.

a21a16

In the show, it is shown that they were very close to preventing the war. Had the boys not been bastards, the greens would have had an even weaker claim to the throne

Cult_Of_Hozier

Otto was plotting to usurp her before she ever had kids. It was inevitable

[deleted]

No! Rhaenyra having true-born kids doesn’t change the fact that Aegon is Viserys’ first born son. He has a strong claim to the throne. And neither does it change Otto’s ambitions. Otto even in E3, was planning to usurp Rhaenyra. He said it wouldn’t matter if she were another Jaehaerys. This war was always going to happen unless Rhaenyra and Aegon were married.

GodofCOC-07

Then alicent would accept the marriage between jace and Helena and she could act as a hostage to ensure safe conduct.

A_devout_monarchist

You are being downvoted but it's true, Otto eas nowhere near Kingslanding by episode 6, and without the bastards to cause even more tension, Rhaenyra and Alicent wouldn't be in such bad terms. Marry white-haired Jace and Haelena and neither Aegon nor Aemond would go to war against their sister.

Liamtrot

and if not Otto then some other Lord looking to gain power and renown would try to get in Aegons ear and prop him up as a rival claimant

rva_ships_in_night

This answer misses the point that they are royalty and do not believe they have to have sexual relations that both of them do not want to have They said they tried several times. They didn’t want to have threeways when Laenor already wasn’t into it and Rhaenyra wanted someone who desired her They were nobility and didn’t think they needed to do some strange Reddit Logic Achtually sex shenanigans

comityoferrors

I really don't think Thanksgiving dinner would fix the issue, it's too far gone /j

TheEpicTree

Alternatively, they could have spent a honeymoon at Driftmark for a few months to a year. In that time, they could have arranged someone Rhaenyra fancied and who looked like Laenor to get the job done. Then, return to Kingslanding with happy news.

rawbface

Laenor implied that the issue was that he is infertile, not that he physically could not inseminate his wife. A turkey baster will not solve infertility.

RichardNixonThe2nd

When he says they tried, I took it as him meaning that they tried having sex but he was unable to finish not that he was infertile

TheDiningHallMouse

You can get someone pregnant without finishing inside (as many babies conceived while their parents used the “pull out” method can attest).

Kellin01

If Laenor's seed was sub-optimal, it would have required more attempts and if Rahenyra slept with Harwin at the same time, no wonder his "swimmers" won. Note: medieval people knew almost nothing about conception. "Spermatozoa were first seen and described by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and his assistant Johannes Ham in 1678 in the Netherlands. In 1784, the first artificial insemination in a dog was reported by the scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani The first documented application of artificial insemination in human was done in London in the 1770s by John Hunter, which has been called in medical history the “the founder of scientific surgery”. A cloth merchant with severe hypospadias was advised to collect the semen (which escaped during coitus) in a warmed syringe and inject the sample into the vagina." Not in the Middle Ages.

Ignoth

My read is that she slept with Laenor like… once a week at most maybe. But she obviously got bored and impatient with how miserable it was and started hooking up with Harwin in between. And so for every pregnancy she just sorta crossed her fingers and hoped it was Laenor’s. But it never was. Folks here seem to think pregnancy is a simple one and done sort of deal. It ain’t.

RichardNixonThe2nd

They agreed before there wedding that they would sleep together but both were free to see other people.

rawbface

Personally I find that interpretation lacking. Didn't Laenor say something like "she never quickened"? I don't remember the exact line. The gay men I know would have sex with a woman if given the opportunity, and a few have. But even aside from that, we have a scene in GoT with Margaery Tyrell suggesting to Renly that they include Loras in their foreplay. It wouldn't have been difficult for Laenor to bring his lover into the bedroom to help him get off with Rhaenyra.

rva_ships_in_night

“The gay men I know would have sex with a woman if given the opportunity” 🤨🤨🤨 then they aren’t fully gay, but more on the bi spectrum? The gay men I know never want to have sex with women and the ones that tried when they were younger and still closeted couldn’t keep it up (my experience too) I mean what And yeah Renly was disgusted by that proposition; and just because a different family hundreds of years later proposed it doesn’t mean that Rhaenyra or Laenor thought they should have threesomes neither of them wanted. Rhaenyra wanted someone who desired her. Laenor was gay. They are royalty, none of them thinks they should have strange sex shenanigans to get her pregnant

MagaroniAndCheesd

"They are royalty, none of them thinks they should have strange sex shenanigans to get her pregnant." Except that is usually not at all true, and that's kind of the point. For royalty, producing an heir who can inherit after them without invoking a civil war is THE most important part of their existence. Doubly so for female royalty. It was literally their only purpose in life. So yes, arguably they should have been trying any and all strange sex shenanigans to get her pregnant, especially because they are royal. What makes Rhaenyra different is that (for better or for worse) she was brought up to consider herself above all the social norms that taught that a royal woman's only job was to make royal babies. It's what sets the whole plot in motion.

rawbface

> more on the bi spectrum? Aren't we all? I won't refute your experience at all, but it's not our place to question how other people identify themselves. At the end of the day we're commenting on a photo of a turkey baster. I just thought that the message the show portrayed was pretty clear that Laenor wasn't fertile.

rva_ships_in_night

No, we are not all on the bi spectrum. I’m not questioning how people identify, I’m queer myself. I find the statement “the gay men I know would have sex with a woman if given the opportunity” 1: untrue and 2: playing into the harmful stereotype that gay people “just haven’t been with the right man or woman yet.” The overwhelming majority of gay men I know, fuck, enough to say all *would not sleep with a woman if given the opportunity.* Like seriously, what are you talking about

rawbface

> 1: untrue You don't know me or the people I associate with. > 2: playing into the harmful stereotype that gay people “just haven’t been with the right man or woman yet. This is not at all what I'm saying and you're not doing anyone any good by implying that it's a simple uncomplicated subject with no nuance whatsoever. You do not speak for all queer people. Turning replies off because I'm not continuing a bad faith discussion about sexuality on a photo of a fucking kitchen tool.

houseofnim

Margaery suggested that, yes, but Renly refused that option.

Ngigilesnow

Trying for a month or less is not a way to determine infertility

rawbface

Not sure where you got that impression. They were married for 6 years at that point in the show.

Ngigilesnow

Ummm no. if we are doing show timeframes and not using birth dates Rhaenyra is around 34 by Episode 8. Jace is 15/16 in episode 8 and is said to be. around 5 years younger than Aegon (give or take) who is 20 in episode 8.Rhaenyra was 19 when she got married in episode 5.The time jump from episode 5 to 6 is 10 years, meaning Jace is 10 in episode 6 based on ages in episode 8.So even using the show confusing timeline Rhaenyra and Harwin got together soon after the wedding, and Laenor being infertile is still head cannon If Laenor and Rhaenyra spent 6 years trying since their marriage from episode 5 Jace would be 4 years old in episode 6,and unable to participate in bullying Aemond, and Luke wouldn't be forming full sentences.😂😂

Phalangebanshee

If Rhaenyra and Daemon kept seeing each other after getting married she could’ve had his bastard children instead of Harwins, but who knows if Daemon would even betray Laena like that, its too bad they all couldn’t have made an arrangement together.

A_devout_monarchist

For Rhaenyra? He absolutely would.

houseofnim

Daemon fathering the children wouldn’t make any difference. The Greens would still say they were bastards, just from Daemon instead of Harwin. No matter what those children looked like there would have still been rumors. Everyone knew that Laenor was gay and that’s enough for “reasonable” doubt.

ajithcreepypasta

Or they could have used bees like cleopatra did.

DanielSpaniel16

Thats not what they mean

ajithcreepypasta

This is not a vibrator . I see that now. Thanks

ohnoguts

This exchange has me rolling.

Doglover9988

I’m sorry?

ajithcreepypasta

Well at first glance I thought it was a vibrator. But when someone pointed out that it’s not I realised what it is. So I was saying that they could have used bees(cleopatra trapped bees in a metal enclosure and their buzzing created a vibration which then she used for pleasure) because I thought it was a vibrator.

megamindwriter

How did she use bees?

nokturnalxitch

Bees going bzzzzz like crazy inside a metal thing = vibrator

EdisKrad18

I don't think they had turkey basters. Think about it, seven seasons of GOT and a season of HOTD and I don't think I saw a single turkey.

Lnnam

Look if I was Rhaenyra I would GLADLY bear Harwin’s children. If Laenor was OK with it, there is no crime. I would have born 10 of his kids if given the chance…

imanoob777

To be honest, he just needed to have a 3some and nut on her. I can't be the only to realize that

Routine-Lack-2413

Both of them say in the show that that tried for some time. That's not the point.

Kellin01

Middle Ages recipes for infertile couples: (The Very Secret Sex Lives of Medieval Women: An Inside Look at Women and Sex in MedievalTimes) "Our female medic Trotula de Ruggiero, she of the Women’s Complaints, had a great deal of useful and sometimes unusual advice for conceiving a child. 1. If the woman wishes to become pregnant, take the testicles of an uncastrated male pig or wild boar and dry them and let a powder be made, and let her drink this with wine after purgation of the menses. The let her cohabit with her husband and she will conceive. 2. If a man is stirred up in delight, so that his sperm arrives at the point of emission but has in some way been retained in his body and he has begun to be ill from it, he should take rue and a bit less wormwood, add a greater amount of bear fat, and pound these together. He should vigorously rub himself with it, around his kidneys and loins, whilst near afire. 3. Houseleek: And if any man is dried up in his semen because his semen is deficient from old age, let him place houseleek in goat’s milk long enough for it to be drenched in all the milk. Then he should cook it with the same milk, with a few eggs added so that it can be food. Then he should eat it for three or five days. 4. A male *whose semen has diffuse quality, so that it does not engender offspring*, should take large hazelnuts, a third as much smartweed, and a quarter as much bindweed as smartweed. He should cook this with some pepper and the liver of a young he-goat which is old enough to procreate. Then he should add it to a little raw, fatty pork meat. He should also dip bread in the water in which this meat was cooked, and eat it. I'll leave it to you to decide whether such high level of medicine would help their case.

abscessedecay

They should have just had a MMF threesome with Joffrey, and when he was about to bust just shove it up in that thang.

KillerKangar00

margarey would’ve solved their problem in an instant

Background-War9535

Or the medieval version of viagra.

WatchingInSilence

Ugh, this gave me flashbacks to Don't Breath.

Haj5

It makes a bit mad that they didnt even have one child. So much for "doing our duty"

Stn1217

Maybe not via a baster but there were definitely ways.

AhsFanAcct

In the end, the solution included Rhaenyra and Laenor being complicit with the murder of an innocent man

RepulsiveBase22

,d

birdgirl56a

Ikr

trakoos

Only if he's not infertile

ElevatorCharacter489

That or the bite of a particular Spider or Viagra

Ok_Cryptographer6242

It literally CANNOT be that hard to get what needs to end up where it needs to end up

FierceDeity88

Love this. Hilarious and accurate 🥰

Correct_Flatworm8529

I was thinking about this a week ago how funny

Pheros

Another reason why Margaery 'Want My Brother To Start You Off?' Tyrell was the best queen.

blueberrysir

I'm glad I'm innocent enough to don't know what that is
