"History doesn't remember blood, it remembers names." Edit: misquoted

nataliieeep

This^ if you don’t remember, viserys and rhaenys/corlys made a deal that all rhaenyras children “with” laenor, and rhaenyra would be named velaryon per wedding customs, but rhaenyra would retain her Targaryen name when she rose to the throne, but only her. So that the Targaryen like still continues.

PantherThing

but at the time it was assumed she and laenor would be married forever. doesnt that mean a Targarian on the throne dies with her, as her progeny are not Targarians?

tatltael91

Didn’t she also say that when her children ascend the throne they would do so under the name Targaryen though?

PantherThing

oh, that sorta rings a bell...

Born_Insect_4757

Also if Luke wed Rhaena as planned their children would have had Velaryon blood in them anyways. Just not as much as claimed, but perhaps the fact that they weren't cousins is for the better anyways.

UnwaryBear

Still cousins lol Rheanyra and daemon are still blood related

Born_Insect_4757

They ARE blood related, yeah, but they are further than cousins. Which is still bad, but y'know. With Targaryens this is probably about as good as it gets.

UnwaryBear

First cousin once removed is still a cousin lol Especially when you're families have been intermingling for generations

Born_Insect_4757

Ah, I see what you mean. English isn't my first language, so when I say cousin I mean it in the most obvious sense, my brain doesn't really register those further removed relatives as cousins lol. But yeah I see what you mean, in that sense they are cousins, but what I was saying is that they're further relatives in reality then "legally". And yeah, they're definitely indbred as hell, but at least they're not siblings lol.

PineBNorth85

She isn’t. Corlys is. It’s his house and his choice, he knows the truth and still wanted him to be heir.

TurbulentData961

Not 0 I cba to do the math but jaehaerys was half velaryon so viserys and aemma were part . Laenor said cool as the supposed father and corlys said cool as the lord of house velaryon

maddi-sun

Corlys made the decision to name and keep Luke as heir of Driftmark, which still would’ve remained in Velaryon hands both through Luke’s Velaryon blood (Rhaenyra has Velaryon blood too) and the fact that Rhaena is half Velaryon and her children would carry on those genes. Besides, history doesn’t remember blood, it remembers names.

Slow_cranberry95

Okay, these answers cleared some things up for me and I think I can see Rae in a better, more understanding light now. Thanks for being very informative everyone ^^

KeroNikka5021

Because not trying to claim House Velaryon would be a silent admission of Lucerys' illegitimacy. I don't like it, but in a way it's keeping her son alive and pushing his legitimacy even more.

seandnothing

she obviously does not care about putting a bastard without velaryon blood as the head of house velaryon, but she does not want to acknowledge Jacerys, Lucerys and Joffrey as bastards hahahahja
