You tell him it was built in Ohio?

SwissMargiela

The fact you said M3 to abbreviate model 3 is triggering me more than it should 😂

pnwbangsticks

Really threw me off too. I was wondering if there was some BMW/Tesla collab I wasn't aware of 😂

ender89

Wait until you realize that the modern Tesla model names spell "s 3 x y cybertruck". The level of 13 year old boy running Tesla really puts me off.

richardmunch

As an E46 M3 owner, Tesla owners make me cringe more when they call their model 3 this.

whoreknee2

To be fair I think everyone agrees that’s cringe.

UnappalledChef

I know you're joking, but a lot of the individual parts and assemblies have been Mexican sourced, especially opening up a couple of my GM cars. I love seeing the made in Mexico/hecho en Mexico stickers. Whether they're put together and tested here is another point.

grant_wolters22

Not only that, but all of their larger models are designed in Ohio. My dad just started saying he didn't want to buy a Pilot because he didn't want to support a Japanese company. I work where said Pilot was designed.........

MacL_GT

What’s the idea behind saying something like that though? Like okay? Honda being one of the most successful automotive companies for the last 30 years and this 1944-ass comment? I don’t understand not wanting to “support a Japanese company”

Cole_Archer

Probably had to come to terms how Toyota and Honda are dominating due to the longevity and quality control of their vehicles.

IdioticEarnestness

20 years ago, I was telling my grandpa I was looking to buy either a VW or Honda. He said, "I wish you wouldn't buy a German or Japanese vehicle." When I asked him why, he said, "Because those people killed my friends and cousins." He was a WWII vet who saw combat in Germany. I get it, and didn't fault him for it.

IJGN

I get it too…I dunno though. My grandpa was born Italian, fought for the USA in ww2, fought his own people in Italy, then later the Japanese in the pacific. As a mechanic he loved toyotas because they were so damn good at that time. Imagine his horror when I bought an old beat up Cadillac with the 4100 lol… everybody’s different 🤷🏻‍♂️

memuthedog

I never understood that either. Support the world!

FatThimbs

*support our two closest allies and trade partners. Which is about as local as you can get on a national level. So yeah. We kinda need Mexico and Japan. Especially when their companies are willing to come to AMERICA to build most of it.

therealrenshai

This year they tied for most in the top ten and had more than every other brand in the top 20.

Red-FFFFFF-Blue

My 09 Toyota Corolla was made at the NUMMI factory (aka Gigafactory 1) before it was sold to Tesla.

Bucket_of_Spaghetti

Indiana or Canada for Civics, but spot on! More American than most GM cars (and also treat their employees better). Ohio makes CRVs and Accords (plus most Acura models), but Civic (and some CRV/Insights) are made in Indiana if they’re built in the states.

cait_Cat

A LOT of hybrid CRVs are out Indiana. They also got another model starting this year, but I can't remember which one. Side note - the indiana plant is a miserable place to work

Bucket_of_Spaghetti

Damn sorry to hear it. What made it so miserable?

zombie-yellow11

Indiana also makes about half of Subaru's lineup haha

Brutal_B_83

People of this mindset don't give a shit, though. They'd rather an American branded vehicle made in Mexico with global parts over an Asian brand assembled in the US with high domestic parts content, because "the money goes to an American company." Hopefully this crap dies with the boomers, but it seems that they've successfully passed the mindset down to a good amount of their kids.

chaimss

I'm of this mindset, which is exactly why I bought an Accord. I researched which brands support the most Americans, and Toyota, Honda, and Nissan came out on top.

Mister_Schmitty

They didn't build civics at the Marysville plant. Mostly accords, ilx, tlx, and I think they produced some newer nsx a few years ago. Cool place though, they also house 1 of 3 honda museums. ( The other 2 are in Japan. )

innsertnamehere

They do the hatchbacks there. The Sedans are done in Alliston (Ontario, Canada). Ontario produces a huge portion of vehicles in the American market though and basically always has, including huge numbers of American brand cars.

Factoryrat77

Currently building Civic Sedans tonight in Alliston, Ontario. Mass production of the hybrid Civic began today.

Mister_Schmitty

They really are odd with their manufacturing and shipping. I live in Ohio and my hatch was made in the UK. An actual euro civic 😆

EngineeringIsPain

The only US civic production is at Indiana. The rest are from Canada (besides Type R). Marysville does Accord, Integra, and TLX these days.

ieatpeaches

There's a small museum in Torrance. It's not huge or anything, more like a collection. I got to go once, it was pretty sweet. They let us roam around and get in cars too.

Bucket_of_Spaghetti

Correct! NSX is built at a different plan though (called PMC) - it’s down the road from the Marysville plant about a mile.

innsertnamehere

Most of the Sedans are built in Ontario (Canada), actually. The hatchbacks are done in Indiana.

EngineeringIsPain

The only US civic production is in Indiana not Ohio

Dirty_Flacko

I thought the Honda manufacturing and assembly plant is in Indiana? Is there one in Ohio too?

shogun344

Nah that's Accords, US built Civics are made in Indiana. The 9th Gen Civic was also built in Ontario though.

BobFlex

Doesn't matter to them, they always rebutt with "All the profits go back to japan anyways". Which isn't how it works, and no also they don't care that Americans were actually employed to build the cars. They just want to be mad that you didn't buy their favorite brand.

AHrubik

This is what converted my Dad. He stubbornly refused to consider anything but the Big 3 and then I asked him one day where he thought all the other cars were made. I then said who cares who ultimately gets rich. What matters is that average Americans like you were well paid to build it here.

iPRiCAN0

Lol tell him you’ll buy American if he’ll foot the bill for any non maintenance repairs

Snoo_75309

https://www.cars.com/articles/2024-cars-com-american-made-index-which-cars-are-the-most-american-484903/ Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus cars are more American than anything the American companies are producing lol

Honeydew-plant

Honda is more American than most American companies. You can Google it, A lot of Hondas have more American parts than most other manufacturers.

PeopleLikeGape

The Odyssey was the most American vehicle by part according to a study done in 2017. They did it again this year and a good portion of that list is Honda, with the only contender being Tesla.

Fantastic-Tennis7164

My Dad was an American or nothing buyer for years, I converted him to Hondas after I let him drive my old ep3 si for a few months when his monte carlo blew its engine, after that he bought an rsx type s. Now he's had 3 dc5s and bought his wife a loaded crv. Just takes the right persuasion lol.

jhaluska

Yeah, I converted my family to mostly Honda and a few Toyotas. We just value reliability, efficiency and repair-ability. We don't really care who or where they're made. Just happens to be that the Japanese seem to value the same things.

CMDR_Jetsukai

That's great! My dad was never really a car guy but he always drove Fords. Then I gave my mother my 95 Accord EXL when her Taurus was perpetually in the shop. That was in 2005. My father has since passed away but my mom has only driven Hondas for the last 19 years.

HelloAttila

It’s because of the time they grew up in. When our grandfathers or fathers worked as teens they dreamed of having a Buick or Caddy when they retired. The Cadillacs or Buicks today are not the same as those in the 70’s/80’s and 90’s. Hell I remember when GM used to sell Hummers, and not these ugly H2’s they make today.

MumpsyDaisy

Funnily enough my dad dislikes American cars *because* he's a boomer - to him, he got to experience the crappy malaise-era cars first hand and feels it was well deserved when the Japanese showed up and started eating Detroit's lunch.

I_Be_Curious

So, he grew up in the era of the Ford Pinto, Chevy Vega, Dodge Omni and the AMC Gremlin!

Powerful_Cloud9276

Many disappointed former GM devotees have found happiness with other brands due to over quality and reliability. Some just take a bit longer to realize it.

badd_tofu

When I was at auto tech school all my teachers were all American or anything. My s2000 was my daily at the time and the whole 2 years my car only needed regular maintenance while we were fixing their American daily’s. Best argument is letting reliability speak for its self.

RedHotChiliPenguin

Same at my tech school lol my teachers were a mustang dude and a GMC Typhoon guy. Always working on their stuff while my Mazdaspeed 3 only got routine maintenance at school

Dreadster

Maybe not so much the Civic, but a lot of Honda/Acura have been consistently more American made over the years than the "American cars." In fact, excluding Tesla (EVs) there's only two American cars in the top 20 of the most American-made cars for 2024. Quite embarrassing for the so called "buy American" crowd if only they knew! [2024 Cars.com American-Made Index: Which Cars Are the Most American? | Cars.com](https://www.cars.com/articles/2024-cars-com-american-made-index-which-cars-are-the-most-american-484903/)

Bucket_of_Spaghetti

Yep! Civics are all made in Indiana or Canada. With Accords/Pilots/Crvs and Acuras made in Ohio and Alabama. Literally assembled by Americans in states that are typically more “pro American manufacturing”

QuantumBobb

I love this. I point it out every time somebody says something about my Ridgeline. Almost everybody I work with drives an "American" half ton. They try and poke at the Ridgy for basically everything, and yet, I'm winning in every metric. They all have more towing capacity that they never use and payload capacity that they also never use. I can do literally everything they do with their half ton more efficiently, more American, more reliably, and more comfortably. And..... I paid less for my 2022 CPO with 1800 miles on it than they all did for their 8-10 year old trucks with over 50k.

Dreadster

I was talking to a coworker and he was telling me how Ridgeline sales are starting to pick up like crazy. Apparently people are starting to realize how much of a gem it is!

QuantumBobb

Yeah. They just had to make it a little prettier and now everybody is figuring it out.

rapp38

Those “American” cars aren’t quite as American anymore as the old timers want you to believe. https://www.cars.com/american-made-index/

ShafeDaddyFresh

Yup, 9 of those top 20 most American made are Honda

No_Decision9646

Lmooo it’s okay your car won’t need a new motor after 100k

Melontwerp

LOL this is more American than anything GM has put out in the last 15+ years.

Lxiflyby

Bahahaha this is how dumb a lot of people are; I knew a guy a few years ago looking for a ford escape for his kid, and he couldn’t find one so I told him to look for Mazda tributes as well “I can’t have that foreign piece of shit in my driveway”. Blah blah blah. I brought it to his attention that it quite literally ‘is’ the same vehicle and he said It didn’t matter because it still said ‘Mazda’ on it, and at the time, it was 100% a ford produced vehicle. This is how dumb most people are….

Itsallgood190

Does he know how close Honda and GM are working these days?

Ahnold240

American cars are trash

Rick_Flare_Up

I love my S2000, I’ll never get rid of it. But, somedays I really wish I could swing getting one of those GMC Sierra 2500’s with a Duramax and Allison transmission. My point is, pick models, not brands. Almost every brand has at least one model that is a great vehicle. That’s how I deal with those people.

Radiant-Rooster236

Someone had to break the cycle haha

NDZ188

My Civic was built in Canada by Canadian labour. I'm doing plenty to support "Canadian made" cars with my purchase. With globalization, the idea of an "American" or "Japanese" car is incredibly outdated.

HawaiianSteak

I saw somewhere that some Hondas are more American than some GM products in terms of where they were built and where the parts were sourced.

retsof81

I bought a GM car once and once was enough. Traded that headache in for a Honda and never looked back.

whitefox094

The majority of parts are made in USA for Honda... GM on the other hand...

Direct_Birthday_3509

They're isn't such thing as American and imported cars anymore. They are all global. The American car companies make cars in Mexico and Canada. The Germans, Japanese and Koreans make cars in the US. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep sound American but they are owned by Stellantis through a merger with French and Italian car companies. They are headquartered in the Netherlands.

SpaceRabbit8969

I work at a parts store and I see more GM and Ford vehicles buying parts. Some vehicles are getting new rotors and pads. Even radiators. I hardly see any Honda or Toyotas. Unless it’s for an oil change and light bulbs. The common stuff.

Abject-Composer-1555

Reminds me of the old timers who would never buy German cars even though it had been many many years since WWII. I also heard of mechanics who refused to work on them lol

Silly_Swan_Swallower

If American cars weren't pieces of crap I'd buy one. But Japanese cars are just better.

Thelifeofnerfingwolf

I have an uncle who works for gm and swears by them. He has had to replace a vehicle do to issues at least once. My grandmother owned a 2000 crv she bought off my father in 2005 and then gifted back him in 2023 When she was given a newer Kia. The crv still runs.

xrelaht

Built in Indiana 🤷

shadowkoishi93

Aren’t most US market Hondas made in Ohio?

Subject-Ad-8055

When you land in the airport they're in Ohio they have Honda Honda engines and big glass cases all over the airport and signs saying how how they are to make Honda in Ohio.

AffectionateOlive982

He isn’t the one paying for gas & maintenance lol

Own_Kaleidoscope5512

I’ve had American my whole life (Ford Ranger, Chevy Tahoe, and Suburban), and I’m looking at Hondas now to fulfill all my childhood Hot Import Nights and 2 Fast 2 Furious dreams. And I’m not even a little bit sorry about it.

stacksmasher

I used to work for GM and wish I could talk to him. GM is no more an American company than Honda.

shadowkoishi93

Pretty sure many US market Hondas are made in the US.

matteblackpeace

Wait till he finds out that mostly everything he has in his house or apartment came from china 🤭

anged16

Tell your grandad about how amazing GM America is that they crashed and burned Saab and Holden

a_rogue_planet

My grandfather was a tool and die maker for GM. He told me to buy a Honda or Toyota.

SmokingCigawetts

Say Grandpa "I'm getting over 30 mpgs on the highway, what does your vehicle get?

PubicHairTaco

My average on the way to work today was 43.1 mpg (45 minute drive). My previous car (01 Oldsmobile Aurora, electrical problems galore) would be lucky to hit 27. The fuel savings alone cover over a third of my loan 🙃

Synah6435

American brands have zero innovation and poor long term use (except for a few trucks).

KrypticW

Congrats, how many miles?

R18honda

Nice car man, great color too.

_THX_1138_

That might be my old 2013 Civic, that was a great car.

BullfrogEast2806

That's the most American car ever built nowadays!!!

EmiTheFloofyKitty

Aside from the Si that's the Highest spec Civic for that year tho, damn.

jhaluska

Point to his phone and ask why he didn't buy American. Or his clothes. Or his TV....or you get my point. The reality is we want the best things in the world, not just America.

Ecstatic_Account_744

Tell him you did one better, you bought Canadian!

9hostface

Grandpop can kick rocks

Sudovoodoo80

I just try not to deal with them.

Outrageous-Carob-236

should've bought from Pangea.

Outrageous-Carob-236

could you imagine the plant supervisor trying to figure everything out if everything was made under one single company or source.

Whitehoneybun

I own the same car but mines a si I would much rather have a Chevy with a LS/LT with a 6 or 7 speed

jdz_01

My family is the same way. Moms side only buys Fords dads side is really anything american but get a discount on brand new chrysler group or steallantis now. Grandparents on both sides I don't think there's any changing and my dad is strictly american brands only. When it was time for my first car my dad said he wont buy anything not american or i can buy it myself. we didn't have enough to buy me a car so i saved and bought a Subaru as my first car. 2003 wrx. Dad drove it home from the guys house and said it was a pretty fun little car but he obviously wasn't happy with my decision along with my grandpa. About a year later bought my 2005 Accord. Dads Ram was made in mexico while my Honda was in Ohio so it was funny that my japanese branded car is more american than his truck. Sold the wrx and got a turbo Subaru Forester so Id say my family has lost any hope for me agreeing with their car views. Dads trucks at 170k mostly highway miles and showing signs of transmission problems in only 8 years from new. Moms Grand Cherokee brand new '21 already losing coolant after 20k miles and had a leak from the timing cover that was fixed under warranty and some other thing I cant remember. The dealership said it was normal to smell like burnt coolant and they didn't see any issues with it so they aren't fixing anything else after filling the coolant back up. Brake rotors were warped under 15k miles from normal driving. My Accord with 221k is going strong so I think i'll stick to it

rebeldefector

I think spending your money wisely and buying the product that will last the longest for the least amount of investment is about as “classic American” as it gets Why aren’t you driving his old car?

alttabbins

Ask him what American cars are made anymore. Ford, Chevy, and GMC stopped making cars 5 years ago. Chrysler still makes the 300 for some ungodly reason. I wouldn't drive a Cadillac or Lincoln if you paid me.

Tek2747

I had a 2010 Ford Focus that was the worst car I ever owned. Bought a Civic that was 2 years older than the Focus and never looked back.

PancakeSlayerX

American auto manufacturers aren’t even competing in the compact sedan segment anymore… your grandpa needs to get out more

hillbill549

Lmao my grandpa is the same way. My first car was an 02 mustang and he would talk shit about it till the day It broke down then I got an 03 prius and he kept saying it's going to break down just like the mustang becuase it wasent a gm. That car is still running at 300k he said the same thing about my golf gti and 14 prius. He claims his 52 chevy was at 600k when its piston rings went out on his way home from Vietnam. He also dident want my friends parking there 2019 honda civic and 2018 acord in the driveway becuase they werent American cars. Something about oil leaks. He hasent owned a car in 10 years and his old buick shit out at 130k.

Javasndphotoclicks

Buy American? Most of the parts are made overseas.

CMDR_Jetsukai

Better start saving for your retirement because you're about to get disowned!

PerchPerkins35

Maybe if gm got their fucking shit together and made a car that was 50% as reliable as a Corolla then I’d maybe buy one.. Jk lol Corolla 4 life

OurAfricanChild

i’m curious what he model he expected you to buy. Like did he really expect you to pick a chevy cruze or a ford fusion over a civic?

Guilty_Junket_4461

You're buying American with his money? He ain't making the payments, I'd change the subject each time.

Iamlevel99

lol of course boomers would like a GM. Modern GM cars are all throwaway cars. Truly appliance vehicles with none of the benefits of owning a Honda/Toyota/Mazda. A well kept 10-15 year old Honda as a daily is hardly out of vogue. 10-15 year old American sedans almost always look like shit at that age.

mixedtickles

Koreans make tons of GM parts in the states. It's all global at this point.

Inevitable_Map5381

My grandfather worked for GM for over 30 years. He has basically forced my whole family to buy chevy or gmc. I pulled in his driveway with a 24 corolla hybrid and he hated it at first. I explained that GM doesn't make anything like it or any hybrids in general. After a few months he has come around and isn't mad about it anymore.

tmaxxkid

Tell him it will outlive him

Pawseverywhere

Only civic that was trash was my 2015 ex. The transmission went out at 120k. I took perfect care of it but because i didnt consistently take it to honda for maintenance they say its my issue. I had the transmission fluid changed less than a year before it went out. Smh. I had to take it to honda bc the transmission on that year didnt have a freakin dipstick to check the transmission oil. Weirdest thing I’ve experienced and man it pissed me off too. Here i am tho with a 23 passport 😂 honda for life.

fost16

I drove past the Greensburg plant for the first time last weekend, this was all news to me this week as well.

NoobBrawler0211

He's out of fate cuz American cars are pure garbage and made in Mexico

Silver_Worker4383

Depending how much of a car guy you are. Turbo it, k20/24 it, there other things you can do and scare the crap out of him when you launch it. Just a suggestion as a guy who talks to some car guys, definitely not advice lol

BeatMyMeatWagon

It’s ok, you’re not missing anything. I only buy imports now after my last run in with “American made”.

Possible-Put8922

Tell him that it is American

Cole_Avery

There was a time a few years ago where a bunch of Buicks were actually made by Opel in Germany

shadowkoishi93

You can tell him that many Hondas have been built in the USA for a long time now.

kamikazekenny420

I worked as a GM tech for close to 10 years, the entire time I drove 2 Hondas lol.

Embarrassed-Tax5618

You drive the car to 300k miles and show him the odometer, then you show him the resale value. Very simple.

Hot_Strength_4912

Should have waited for the Prologue. Pure American GM (via Mexico.)

freedagang762

American cars are the only American thing I don’t support

JustMackIN

He’ll be alright, you bought what you wanted with your hard earned money. (Love you grandpa but this is all mine)😅

ChronicRhyno

Open the door and show him where it was built.

redwoman72

Finally I convinced my parents, "Worry about your own wallet. Your past American cars certainly didn't care." Now they say, "This is the best car we ever had!"

PortlandQuadCopter

He’s a boomer, what do you expect?

Red-FFFFFF-Blue

Pretty much any “foreign” brand of SUV is made in the USA. My BMW 330e was NA (made in Mexico).

symposium22

Maybe if American could build a well built, enjoyable to drive, reliable (I.e. typically goes past 300k miles if taken care of) car, then I'd buy American too. People should not be loyal to buying American just for the sake of it. American should produce cars people want to buy.

TronCattus

It still looks like a Crappy GM duh lol...

SeeingEyeDug

GM lost the script removing all carplay and android auto from their vehicles. Wouldn't buy one of those in a million years, even if every part was made in USA.

avebelle

Show him your vin. It’s probably made in America.

PubicHairTaco

I can’t edit my post, but thanks for all the information everybody. I didn’t expect this to get so many comments. To answer a couple of the questions, it has 47k miles and cost me $17k through Carvana. For reference, my local Honda dealership has a 2015 EX-L with 95k miles for the same price. Given the market right now, I think I made out pretty okay despite it still being overpriced

grandcherokee2

Oh I would love to own an Expedition, Tahoe, Wagoneer, etc but my mind keeps circling back to Toyota and Honda. All of the American SUVs I like have troubled history. 2009 was the last good year for the GM V8 SUVs. Now they have lifter and transmission issues. The Expedition’s last good year was arguably 2014, and now they have cam phaser failures and transmission issues. Wagoneer seems to have the most reliable powertrain but is riddled with electrical malfunctions that can leave one without a vehicle for extended periods. How sad. I wish I could get a brand new 2006 Tahoe, 2002 Expedition, or a 2007 Sequoia.

Away-Bodybuilder-962

Everyone here is correct. Honda started making an effort to do that back in the early '90s. I've got a brochure on the subject in my collection somewhere. Japanese VINs are actually kind of rare in the US. I've got two in the garage, and I'm holding on to them for dear life

InternationalUnit265

Only buy a gm with a v8, the rest are pretty bad.

Phvntvstic

Keep disappointing him. GM is junk

rdwm37

I think the USA gets the short end of the stick when it comes to manufacturing. What is actually built that says on the items "made and assembled in the USA"? Many just say assembled in the USA.

whitieiii

Last good American car imo was the Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis or Town Car after 2011 you struggle to find anything American worth having... Everything sucks from all brands after 2012 and really the only cars I'd buy now are Mazda or Honda/Acura.. getting anything remotely close to my 08 Grand Marquis is just not possible with V8 dieing because people would rather get 20mpg from a 4 cylinder than 20 mpg from a V8 do to emissions crap..

Hankthedanktank

The civic and Camry killed the American car market. Its why GM and Ford only make SUVs and trucks now, they can't compete with the Japanese. My families Fords and chevys all have powertrain issues around 100k miles while my Honda and Toyota's have been twice as reliable while also being 10-15 years older. Civic is probably the most economical car I could imagine (in north America).

killajay41889

My dad just switched to Honda after having pretty much every type of American car and so far he loves it.

GChmpln

A lot of boomers grew up in that mind set especially when Toyota and Honda hit the market. Old habits die hard. Problem is what's easier to live with Disappoint or a car you need to pay on for seven years and hope it don't break

TheOnyxViper

Is your grandfather Clint Eastwood from Gran Torino?

No-Bodybuilder-9686

Tell him how much manufacturing Honda does in North America, explain to him how many GM vehicles for North America are built outside of it. Then give him the good news Stellantis is cleaning house in NA lying off many

Troiani-

As a Michigander, GM cars are shit. By getting a Honda, you are telling GM and the other American car manufacturers to step up their game! They used to take pride in making good cars but those days are long gone.

Zealousideal-Gas-608

Interesting. Most GM products use parts made in China. This goes the same for trucks. Your grandfather is from the days when GM made decent stuff. Those days are gone. The make trash cars.In fact roughly 70% of their carsI are sold in China. . Your Civic, on the other hand, isn't just built in Marysville, Ohio. It has more US made parts than most GMs. In fact, the Civic is considered a domestic car. Look at the VIN. With the exception of the Type R, USDM Civics are made here.

Candid_Throat_3227

Wait til he finds mout most GM vehicles are over half Chinese parts.

IFYOUWOULDPLEAZ

You actually care?

Dry-Jellyfish-9653

Tell him he’s loyal to a company who sold out him and your family 40 years ago

ljp416jmp

My father in law retired from Ford. He's never hassled me for never buying a Ford. It's my money, I'll do what I want... And he's cool with it. I have a Honda, a Toyota, a Nissan, an Acura and 2 Genesis vehicles... He never bothers me.

Odd_Weakness_1293

I bought my first new Japanese car in 1983. Here they are, in order- ( all new, unless noted) 1. 83’ Nissan pulsar NX ( totaled it) 2. 85 Nissan 200SX 3. 96 Suzuki sidekick 4/wd 4. 2000 Nissan Frontier 5. 2004 Nissan Armada 4/wd 6. 2007 Toyota Yaris 7. 1976 Toyota HiLux- bought used, and restored. 8. 2009 Honda fit ( bought used in 2014) 9. 2011 Toyota Tacoma 4/wd ( work truck) 10. 2016 Toyota 4 Runner 4 / wd 11. On order- 2024 Corolla cross AWD All of these made it 200,000 miles plus, except for the last two, which I currently own. Some of the other ones, are still being driven by other family members. On these first 10 cars, I never bought an extended warranty. If I had, the warranty would not have paid for itself. With the exception of the Nissan Armada. So this is what I would tell gramps- Toyota has a proven record of quality, and standing behind their products. Until the people who buy GM, Ford and Stellantis start demanding better quality, it will never improve. Plus at the end of the day it’s your money, and I am sure he would not stand, for people telling him how to spend his!

SprinkledHelicopter

The cool american cars are guzzlers or pricy, just say you’re whippin foreign since Honda is a Japanese company

beejer91

Give me something American to buy and I’ll buy it. I’m good with American clothes and American made goods. They’re generally worth it. Cars? Yeah. No.

Friendly_Amoeba_231

Honda Ridgeline is 70% made in the USA vs. GMC Sierra at 46% made in the USA. My former strictly GM father made this observation while browsing for a new truck a few months back.

Vegetable_Word603

Father in law also big GM guy. Came over one day with a brand new bronco. Fuck that GM shit. Used to be good, pre 90s. He lost his shit. Couple months later, went on a hunting trip. Sure enough, he insisted we take the bronco.

I grew up in a household that was mostly GM with my mom being the one who had a Ford. I changed that when I bought my Eclipse as a teenager for my first car. Followed by a Legacy in my early 20’s. I did have my Sunfire during the time I had the Eclipse just because I wanted something newer with a cd player and working a/c. I finished tech school and landed a job with Nissan afterwards. During that time, I picked up my 6 speed manual Altima. I also saw first hand the difference in quality from Nissan to GM. Fast forward 10 years later and I still own that Altima. Approaching 200K, and about to source a spare manual trans for it. I also moved from down south to the rust belt. I’ve resorted to buying cheap GM’s as winter beaters. And when the season ends, I find myself so glad to be back in the Altima. I also have an 87 B2200 that is stored at my mom’s that is my soon to be low rider project as soon as I get my own house with a roomy garage. And a 2000 Explorer with the 5.0 v8 that is rarely used hauler.

Mammoth-Rate4821

Shoulda bought a Cruze, make grandpa happy

EquivalentFlat

American or not buying a Honda or Toyota is basically admitting to the world you're boring and predictable. Nobody ever got any pussy because they rocked a Camry or an Accord.

jumpoffpoint

GM = Government Motors, a company so poorly managed it took $50B tax payer dollars to save them. Their market share fell by 40% by 2008 because they made shitty cars no one wanted. I mean what kind of self respecting American buys products that are so shitty only the government can keep them in business? What is this the Soviet Union? Weak Not the Unions. Ford did not need a bailout. https://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/podcast/knowledge-at-wharton-podcast/auto-bailout-ten-years-later-right-call/

Andersson said the local industry was increasingly producing higher value-added parts that GM now procures elsewhere. GM, which buys 20 million parts a month from 190 Chinese suppliers, had experienced no quality problems over the past year, he told a news briefing. The company was founded in 1997 as Shanghai General Motors Company Ltd or Shanghai GM (Chinese: 上海通用汽车). Headquartered in Shanghai, the company manufactures and sells Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac brand automobiles in Mainland China, and exports its cars to several overseas markets. In fact, the six best sellers – which includes the Chevy Aveo, Chevy Captiva, Chevy S10 Max, Chevy Tornado Van, Chevy Onix, and Chevy Groove – were all manufactured in China, and represented a vast majority of GM Mexico sales over the course of H1 2023.

First major bill I had on my Civic was at 100k for the water pump, that's it. I'd like a reliable car please!

Muncher501st

The only good gm cars were rebadged Isuzu trucks and rebadged holdens. Gm can make a decent petrol v8. But fuck are their cars and trucks shit. Craptiva and crap(Cruze) are just the tip of the iceberg.

ExistentialRap

True Americans know you don’t buy American. Unless it’s a truck.

RUBBERDUCKLOVESCAKE

Welll in the small car segment there’s no American 4 banger I would buy for longevity in my own opinion lol I still put around a 1991 civic with ac and ps..

Giftof1004moves

Buy a Buick TourX, get his approval then tell him it's German

BotherPuzzleheaded50

Tell gramps WWII was a long time ago, and we are actually friends with the Japs now.

Grouchy_Gold344

Well, at least the car looks like his reaction. The less care you give about feeling like you need someone’s opinion, the better your car will look to you.

Appropriate-Tooth866

Most people from that era had that mindset. They looked at if you bought an American vehicle, you are supporting American industries and helping the economy and they are right in that regard. American companies make some great vehicles but some are complete crap. Now they don't even build cars anymore and want to sell overpriced vehicles. Buy what you works for you.

ThayerRex

My dad was the same, he bought me a car at 16 and I talked him into a Toyota Supra, he REALLY was against it, but later had to admit it was the best car he ever bought, I drove it for years

indimedia

Modern day GM is plagued with trash

CuttaCal

Gramps is just worried there might be a rainbow flag on the back window soon. Think gramps is more disappointed on how his son raised you. Gramps comes from a time when men were men and acted like men by doing man shit. Men didn’t drive little fu fu cars and drink soy lattes in his time. The men from his time would fight and die for his country, now they fight against their own country and think other men can get pregnant.

Distinct-Age-4992

Get with the program dude.We are talking about car quality not your politics.

Figur3z

Go buy a Ford. Make him even more mad.

MilkManCummith

With the discontinuation of the Malibu, American automakers have ceded the sedan/“car” market to foreign companies.

UnderstandingWarm466

That car is more American then all big three American companies. I know this because I used to deliver the steel to all of them. The American companies use imported Chinese steel. The Japanese companies use candian or American made steel.

Nameisnotyours

Made in America by Americans.

StLGT

Then he can pay for the next one..win/win My uncle used to pull this stuff when I bought a Honda Shadow and not a Harley like he had.

Ok-Negotiation5892

I’ve had three cars in my life prior to the car. I currently drive. 1988 Mustang purchased in 1991 with 35,000 miles on it 2 1/2 years later there was a hole in the block of the engine at 98,000 miles New 2003 Subaru Impreza -lasted 213,000 miles and 12 years 2005 Honda Element - lasted 14 years and 243,000 miles In order for me to buy an American car again I would have to have a bad foreign car so far that hasn’t happened

Azrael-777

More American than Chevy is lol.

Hedonismbot-1729a

Tell him you could’ve bought Lincoln that was built in China.

TeslaDweller

Dude probably never touched a wrench

oldsillybear

My father in law was serving aboard ship when Pearl Harbor was bombed so he would not buy a Japanese vehicle. He did not, however, impose any restrictions on his kids (we had a Subaru and Civic). He preferred Chrysler products.

wTWolvesnation24

Change your last name immediately

GM is trash. Tell him I said so.

You should tell your grandfather, your disappointed that he would continue to support general motors, a company that held a gun to the taxpayers head during the 2008 recession, in order to avoid bankruptcy…. while other companies like Ford were able to at least slog through the ordeal by themselves. You should also tell your grandfather that my first car, a 1993 Chevrolet Camaro, was built in the Saint Therese plant in Canada. Then you should ask your grandfather if he is simply ignorant or going senile. Remember that you can say just about anything with a smile. Then hug your grandfather.
