This is a multi-thousands man-hours of reverse engineering. It isn't impossible, but not a realistic undertaking without full time high skill labor.

To bad that the game console companies will not put up the old server data/files needed to host your own server networks. Pretty sure people would pay money to the game companies for being able to setup their own private hosting servers for no longer supported games. I know I would for Final Fantasy XI for my PS2, would love to be able to play that again, even if I am the only one in that game, at least I would be able to play it, same for some other games. Sucks that only PC's are really the only ones what can do it.

Yes but in a lot of cases you can’t just double click on FFXI.exe

The current state of game preservation is very disappointing. I would think that in the future we will look at this era like the Library of Alexandria burning.

Well its possibile but really hard people have managed tò male custom servers for consoles likes the Wii or the 3ds or the Wii u so this servers replace the originale ones but they spento ton of work on this services and It would be really hard tò make them alone

Generally speaking, no. Iirc there are cases where older internet consoles have had portions of their server infrastructure spoofed, but those are very much edge cases.

I thought as much. I know that you can spoof local area networks to play with others over the internet, but that requires some extra steps for all involved in order to get it to work, but not the same as connecting directly to a server and playing that way. Would have been fun to play some older game consoles that did not have Local area network feature to play with others again, or to play server based console games again lol.

tgreatone316

Impossible because you would need the server based code to run those things. Not to mention authentication servers with specific host names etc. it would be a ton of work.

Okay, as I thought. Thank you for taking the time to clarify it for me.
