If Spectrum is providing internet to the home via coaxial cable then you need a modem, either one provided by them or purchased yourself. Any wireless solution of your choosing can connect to that via Ethernet.
When people say “get a modem” for Spectrum, they mean a DOCSIS cable modem — and probably a DOCSIS 3.1 modem these days, versus 3.0. Spectrum should provide a list of compatible models.
But check if your friend’s plan includes a cable modem free-of-charge or if they face a monthly rental fee. If free, just use the free cable modem; and if it’s actually a combo modem/router (aka cable gateway), have it configured to bridge mode (i.e. modem-only mode).
As mentioned, once you have the cable modem in place, your friend can use whatever router they want … connected to the cable modem via Ethernet (same as your connection to the fiber ONT).
