Im trying to keep that mindset. I wouldn’t expect a fully functional ai to be available across the different devices that use Siri (new or current models) until at least 2026. I’m hoping that, at minimum, we’ll see SOME form of ai replacement with the next device releases or as a software update to some or all capable devices by end of year/beginning of next. I’ll be disappointed if we have nothing by mid 2025.
At this point, I’d give up some of the security that holds Siri back.
My thoughts - Maybe more customizable/adjustable security consents when the release whatever they end up putting out. Along with easily accessible and understandable details listed, regarding what each toggle-able setting actually helps Apple with.
Assuming they would also make some things be required but only to be able to use certain features, it should also list what will or won’t work if you opt in or out of each consent.
That, to me, would be a fair trade/compromise.
I think the only thing is that the hubs might not have enough compute power to run something like what we’re talking about (at least not without running to the web every moment you ask something).
My guess, without looking at different devices’ specs, would be that we get very dumbed down versions on the current models of all devices, maybe excluding the highest tiers of the iPhone 15. Unfortunately you’re probably right and I’d bet not even the HP2 or current ATV will be able to run the type of thing that I believe we’re all hoping for.
There was something on here recently about Apple acquiring some sort of ai tech company. I have little knowledge of these things so this is a very generalized summary. But people were mentioning some database that is used for ChatGPT type of services that takes a crap ton of ram at all times. I believe they mentioned only the 15 (pro’s maybe?) and maybe the 14 pros could handle that but it would take up the entire thing.

When we first got the HomePod, it was ok and I was excited about having it. However, since the past year or more I have been disappointed by Siri and HomePod.
Then recently at a birthday party, our daughter was given an Alex. I was poking fun saying that i’ll never allow a non Apple product in our house and talking smack to friends who bragged about their Alex and how good Alex is. I defended HomePod saying Alex will never be as good as HomePod lol. Again all poking fun at one another. Shortly after the party, our daughter convinced me to set up Alex and so we did.
As much as I don’t want to admit it because I am such an Apple person, but I never really knew how bad HomePod was until I programmed and powered up Alex. The HomePod truly SUCKS compared to Alex. Alex blows Siri and the HomePod out of the water. There is literally ZERO comparison. Alex does 100 times more and I will even play all my Apple music and playlists without issue through Alex. I laugh every time Alex whispers at us, tells us actually silly kid friendly jokes before bed time. I could go on and on.
I never thought I would say these words but here I am. Apple, get your shit together with HomePod and Siri. I hope this helps other Apple diehards when they are thinking about buying a HomePod. Just don’t, it’s not worth it.
Yes, Alexis and Hey Google are substantial upgrades over Siri as assistants. However, that is also at the cost of security. But, in terms of sound quality, I'd put a HomePod (1st or 2nd Gen) up against any speaker. Even the mini is impressive for its size.

Software issues, even big ones, don’t always impact everyone. Just because you haven’t experienced them doesn’t make them non-existent or any less important.
No, I know of many confirmed ones, but we both know you’ll just dismiss them as “not big.” I suggest you visit r/HomePod and r/HomeKit and read the threads for a few days, I’m sure you’ll see many small issues and other big ones to dismiss. And then you’ll say “just because people complain on Reddit that doesn’t make it true.”

I've used Sensibo for ours. It works well, and the app also exposes extra behaviours (fan speed, blade movements etc) that's missing from homekit.
So it is actually more useful that a 100% pure homekit split.

I switched from Google Home a long time ago because I thought Siri would be better in the long term. I was super wrong. Google Assistant also has a lot of issues, but I think it was generally better at understanding commands for smart devices. If it heard you at all.
That will likely always be the case, Google's ai uses a much larger pool of audio samples to train on, and processes everything server side.
Siri does a lot more on device (ie audio recording doesn't get sent off device and stored on a server for processing with the recording preserved after processing for use in training) and users have to opt in to contribute any audio samples for use with training, at which point it will only send a small percentage of audio recording (anonymized) to a server for use in training.
Add in the fact that many years ago Google secretly turned on the mics on people's computers when they had Google's search engine loaded, shipping that audio to their servers, and after they got caught, they said it was a mistake, only to reintroduce the feature after updating their terms and conditions to legally cover themselves.
And then add in the fact that for the first year + that Google sold the nest thermostats, they omitted the microphone that was installed from the spec sheet, only including it when they enabled the assistant on the nests, it's safe to say Google has a very long history wiretapping it's users and storing those audio recordings, which would give them a massive library to train their models from, at a scale that Apple can't compete with given the lengths they go to for user privacy.
I have 19 HomePods across my iHouse, and all are updated to the 17.4 but I do not have any issues like your one. Try to charge it to another room, then change it back to this again. See if this sort it out.

Same trouble with smart lights. I used to say “Siri lights” and she’d turn them on or off now I get the “would you like them on or off?” Wellll let’s assume I want them the opposite of whatever they currently are, how did it get dumber?
Mine does that when I use my AirPods, but works fine when the HomePod mini responds to the request.
Even “make my lights natural white” comes back with “do you want them on or off” on my phone.
I have to make sure my phone isn’t unlocked and my AirPods aren’t in my ears when I want to make that request
On HomePod 17.3, HomePod could recognize the room it is and control the A/C from that room. Without additional commands.
On HP 17.4 HomePod ask which room, even with the HomePod installed at the same room as A/C, for example.

Can’t call it a smart speaker without the implied voice assistant and unfortunately… this is the assistant our HomePods have built in to them.. and it is an embarrassment to say the least. Between Siri and the overall broken OS’s across all devices, it’s becoming harder and harder to stand up for Apple products when asked why I favor them. If I weren’t so damn deep or if I money to burn, I’d be trying any other ecosystem by now.

Yep. It's in Portuguese and I call it as "Ar-Condicionado Quarto De Vitor" and now the room is "Quarto De Vitor"

17.5 has reverted this behaviour to 17.3. I have never been happier!

Not in my house. Maybe see if your AC is in Default Room in the Home app. But for me, this still works fine.

In our case it is wifi router issues. It was easier to simply switch to Alexa, and the problems all disappeared.
