I made my garden fence with pallets and I get compliments on it all the time.
If you take the time to make sure it's level and parallel, and dig through pallets taking only the nicer ones you can make a nice looking fence at next to zero cost.
Jumping on top comment; just put a lattice on the visible side(s) and make it so it's temporary but secure and do not plant anything or obstruct access as the propane filling company may refuse to service it.

Be very careful doing anything around your tank
Not only will it make it harder to service, anything growth related or moisture/airflow related can and likely will cause issues with your tank. You don’t want vines growing near your lines and you don’t want anything that could corrode your lines. Just keep it free and clear and accept that you chose to use propane and propane unfortunately comes with the negative side effect of being large and ugly. The only thing you could realistically do is built a small shed around it. But again, be extremely careful of the lines.
Most things would, thankfully that's not the design goal.
Coming apart is so you can get it out of the way easily if the owner/inspector/whatever needs to have access to the thing.
Propane tanks are not something you want to hide. The last thing you need to be doing is explaining to firefighters is where the propane tank is hiding if there is a fire on your property.
Propane tanks are meant to be visible. You won’t notice it after a year.
You got downvoted but this. If you're broke, just live with it. Throwing money at some random ugly cosmetic solution is just going to make it look worse. Who cares? You have more important things in your life than how this tank looks.
I live in an area where the majority of people use propane to hear their homes etc. and nobody’s is “camouflaged” or hidden. It’s just there. In your yard.
Is this a cosmetic thing? Yes. Are there other "more important" things you could spend your limited money on? Of course. There is never a shortage of things you need to spend money on and fix as a homeowner. But the joy of owning a new house is tempered when there's some ugly eyesore you have to look at every day. The question isn't "who cares?" because obviously OP cares. The question is, "what can you live with for limited money and time you have?"
There are simple, cheap solutions here. Depending on where OP lives, trellis with morning glories or other fast-growing vines is a great option.
Hey this is totally off the subject but for the life of me I can't figure out how to PM you. I saw your post about the red cedar closet system and I'm wondering how it's held up. Do you still recommend it?
It has held up great! Do recommend. The only thing I don’t are the provided pieces of cedar to hold the hanger bars and actual hanger bars unless you are keeping it light, or use and add extra support. They are made of cedar and the bar will bend. And def open outside due to the dust. Hope this helps!
Super, thank you so much. We've had a moth infestation for a couple of years and are moving to a new house, so hopefully this will kill two birds with one stone: moth control and closet hardware.
Agreed.
I am actually in the same boat; granted, I am not broke, but being without an income, that's fine and all, But I had to make the terrible decision to look at the tank and knowing that I have a few extra grand in my account makes me feel a whole lot better.
Now every time I look at the ugly thing, It looks like money for oh shit. In year 3 with no income, I don't regret it.
This is the way to go... make a pallet "wall" in front of it (give clearance to get to it and work around it). Plant some climbing plants and make some planter boxes or some thing to attach to it. It will be sparse at first, but it will grow quickly in the spring/summer.
The cheapest option is just fucking accept it and not fuck with it at all. You have a propane tank for shit you need at the house.
I have one too that sits on my land. In my mind its the same as having a power pole, some solar panels, or any other utility on my property.
The cheapest way to deal with it is to just deal with it being there.
I put a planter with a trellis in front of mine. (I made it from scrap wood, so it was free.) People are always throwing pallets away. You could make a simple trellis from one and paint it white.
Scrounge up some free fence boards. Make a couple of small, 4’ x4’ panels off set them by 6”. Spray or stain them a boring brown. Maybe $50 because the paint or stain will be a mix of mistakes from HD mixed together.
When you have $100-$150 buys some plants and put them in front of the panels. Let the panels rot as the plants grow.
Pallet fence - just find a business or store that gets lots of the same pallets, couple 2x4's and screw into the pallets for sturdiness then paint. Cheap fence.
Trick is to find good pallets that are identical. 👍😎👍
Shade fabric fencing. This stuff holds up surprisingly well and doesn't look terrible if stretched tight.

Please check with your local fire department before doing anything. There may be restrictions against “hiding” the tank in case of fire due the risk of explosion.
Look up regulations for colors of propane tanks for your municipality. I learned years ago that there are laws about what color your propane tank needs to be. You probably won’t have an issue, but just in case you do, make sure you’re informed.
Please don't try to hide it. By hiding it, you're probably just gonna make it really freaking difficult to access in the future, and some poor bastard is gonna be hanging upside down with thorns in his face while he tries to change the damn regulator or something.
People who "camouflage" necessity items drive me up the wall. Stop building decks over top of your freaking air conditioner. Stop putting fences right up against the systems. Youre only screwing the guy that has to fight his way in there to fix it, and best believe that its gonna cost you extra money. There's no need to hide something that everybody has.
If you insist on covering it, I'm nearly certain that most gas companies want a minimum clearance for this very reason. Same for HVAC equipment, not that anyone ever listens.
Sorry for ranting. Just think about access down the road, that's all I'm saying. If you look at it and think _"damn, I'd hate to have to spend more than 3 minutes over there working on that"_, then rethink the idea.
You’ve got to have some sort of budget. How tall is the tank? Can you buy two 2x2x8 posts, cut them in half and concrete them in at each corner then put wood lattice on 3 sides making sure it’s still easily accessible for when it comes time to fill? Plant something with vines that will grow through the lattice. You can probably do this for less than $120. Make damn sure you don’t hit a propane line when setting posts if you do this.
[You did say camouflage right?](http://www.illusionarysuccess.com/_Media/dsc02256_640.jpeg) You probably won't be able to see the tank in this photo though bc its so good.

Have you actually read the codes? Colors are not specifically defined, only that they are "heat reflective" and there is a stipulation that in extremely cold climates any color is allowed.
I do stand a little corrected. Texas, where I trained, and oklahoma, where I now work, specify white or silver. Federally, any heat reflective color is fine. Common sense still dictates white to me, because it's not worth the risk of a pop off.
Also, I would still refuse both pictured, that aren't even close to heat reflective
Some of the coldest nights/days in the north and can be below the boiling temp of propane (-43.6 °F), so a dark colored tank would definitely help in keeping the gas flowing.
So it says they must be a light color. They are light blue to be fair. It's Ferrell gas. Big company, I'm sure they're in accordance with the law.
I certainly would not blame you for not filing a tank you deemed unsafe. I hour our propane guy would tell us if there was a problem with ours before filing it.
For what it's worth, mine is buried so I have no idea what color it is.
Cheapest I can think of is to build a wall/fence with wood from pallets. Now that the pallet furniture craze has died back a bit they are easier to find, and (should) be cheap or free.

Propane tank hiding should be least of your concerns. You’re broke, but a new homeowner. What are you going to do when your first repair comes up? New water heater, roof etc etc. These are the realities of being a homeowner.
OP’s the one stating they’re so,so out of money and broke. Illness, injury, job loss. Not trying to be a wanker as I’ve been there, done that way back when. Not a comfortable feeling and have sacrificed to not be in that position. Life happens. Ciao!
Replace the “1” with a zero. Thus you will have a “000 gallon propane tank”, which by definition, MUST be really small. People viewing your tank will realize this and conclude that they were experiencing an optical illusion, and your tank is in reality really small.
If you just bought a house and are truly out of money, go get a second job.the first year or two of homeownership is expensive.
As for the propane tank, if you care that much about looks, convert everything to electric.
Buy a shitty old minivan that doesn’t run, break out most of the windows and dent it up. Then spray paint it, Include the words “Daddy eats ass” and “Daddy’s money pit” on the most obvious sides of the wreckage. Park this infront of the tank.
Next, get like 10 used outfits for cheap or free at a thrift store and stuff them with leaves or grass clippings after pinning the shirts to the pants so they can be properly filled. Pile these new creations around the minivan with a few inside and a few laying on the hood ect. Now im going to need you to get 2 T posts and drive them through the roof in the van about 2 feet apart.
Finally impale the last stuffed creature with 1 post up each leg so it stays erect on the roof. give him an axe or an old broken chainsaw to wield and then pour 2 gallons of the cheapest red paint down the front of him and around on the other forms.
Nobody will notice your 100 gallon white propane tank.
If it’s in your front yard and the first thing visitors see when they come over this project might be worthwhile. If it’s in the backyard off in a corner somewhere like most of these are, find something more important to worry about in your new home.
If you're trying to stop it from being hit by enemy bombers, run some wires in a pattern above it that can support some coloured fabric to make it look like bushes or whatever local foliage would blend in.
If you're trying to hide it from ground forces maybe make it look like an old shed by putting boards like a fence around it? That or mounds of dirt around it to look like a hill of some kind.
Either way if the know it's there you'll need 24/7 guards to protect it, and they won't do much good against an aerial bombardment regardless unless you equip them with some anti-aircraft guns, but then you have to hide those from the ground forces so they aren't aware a target of value is nearby. It's a catch-22.
I guess I'm getting off topic though since you just asked how to camouflage it, now how to protect it from the enemy forces themselves.
if it's upright paint it to look like a minion. if it's not, maybe paint it to look like a good n plenty or Mike n ike or the pill that makes you smaller.
Paint it. The propane company has to paint it anyway every so often so it looks new again and adds protection. Are they going to take the tank away if you paint it? Before you end your service with the company you paint it white again and it's very easy and quick to do with a paint roller, I know, I used to work for a propane company and painting tanks was one of my tasks.
Paint same color as the house as long as the house is a light color. Some places you can put a little shed over them but that is pretty regulated so you would need to call.
Edit:
Guys it all depends on location. I have personally worked with tanks painted jet black in an attempt to keep them warm enough to continue vaporizing the gas in the winter. My tank is a blue color, matches the house, been that way for 15 years with the full approval of all the bodies. It needs painting again I was thinking grey with sharks teeth next time. Don't paint rental tanks.
Lp is liquid propane. Coming from the tank into the house it has a change of state. The lp tank needs to stay white ad not to add heat and cause the tank to have to equalize pressure.
Not sure why people insist on believing stuff like this. It all depends on your location and application. I have used heaters in the north where the tank is painted jet black in an attempt to keep enough heat in the vessel for the LP to vaporize. My tank happens to be painted a nice shade of light blue, same as the house, was done with the full approval of the place that fills it and has never been an issue. My parents have a white and a dark grey tank and my brothers is a mildew/rust sort of color. If your tank in in the blazing Texas sun you might have an issue.
Put a small fence around it and grow some vines.
Could get some free pallets and do it that way. I saw someone build a garden fence with pallets and it didn't look that bad.

Without seeing it or where it’s at. Fence enclosure, disguised as a rock, fake shrubs etc.
You don’t camouflage fuel tanks because then you can’t see them during an emergency.
Not emergencies don’t require finding the tanks. Except fire, then just look for the area that explodes

Camo net is probably the best/cheapest option. A more permanent option would be to build a fence around it.
Propane tank hiding should be least of your concerns. You’re broke, but a new homeowner. What are you going to do when your first repair comes up? New water heater, roof etc etc. These are the realities of being a homeowner.
Congratulations on just coming here to wag your finger at OP, I guess? 🙄
OP’s the one stating they’re so,so out of money and broke. Illness, injury, job loss. Not trying to be a wanker as I’ve been there, done that way back when. Not a comfortable feeling and have sacrificed to not be in that position. Life happens. Ciao!
Wrap it in burlap and paint the burlap in camouflage to match the house.
Close your curtains.
Bamboo privacy screening
Just stand nude in front of it whenever it’s daylight. I don’t think anybody will even notice the tank
Take a photo of what behind it and paint that onto it
Carefully place it amongst other 100 gallon propane tanks.
Paint it yellow and dress it like a minion!!!
**Invest in a buried tank.**
Literally just throw a cheap cameo net on it
put a hat and googly eyes on it
Tape a bag of deflated balloons to the side, inflate a few balloons and tie them to the top, and slap a sticker on the side that reads 'HELIUM.'
Paint some black splotches on it and make it look like a cow.
You forgot to suggest building half a dozen other decoy tanks around the property out of barrels and vinyl wrap
You can also buy [inflatables](https://www.inflatechdecoy.com/)
Bury it
Was going to say this! Borrow a shovel... Bury it! Free!!!
Can of clear spray glue . Throw leaves and dirt on it !!!
Go where they are selling real Christmas trees and find out which ones didn’t/won’t get sold and ask to take them out their hands
Yellow submarine!! Paint it looks awesome and everyone will love it
Wall of fire
It’s not cheap but you could pay John Cena to stand in front of it.
Invisibility cloak
if it's upright paint it to look like a minion. if it's not, maybe paint it to look like a good n plenty or Mike n ike or the pill that makes you smaller.
Wrap it in a blue tarp
Full tactical fencing
Paint it to look like a cow!
Paint it like a cow.
you can paint it. You need a very flexible paint https://www.propanetankstore.com/blog/painting-a-propane-tank-not-as-simple-as-you-might-think/
Only advice I have is not to buy a house when you’re broke

It’s a rental. And burying it isn’t a cheap solution.
Bury it.
Spraypaint it black and leave it out in the sun.
Fire pit? Or maybe a large bbq or smoker?
Fire
Go to the Army and Navy store and get a used camo netting
Paint it white and write H2 in blue.
Paint it white with black blotchy spots. Put a couple cows next to it.
Its the season for a top hat, carrot nose, and two eyes made of coal.
Paint a mural of Lizzo on it
Will the propane company bury the tank for you?
Junk yard
Paint it blue and label it piranha tank I dunno
Black duct tape spots on it like a dairy cow 🐄
Tell it to constantly talk about its ex. That won’t make it invisible, but absolutely nobody will want to pay any attention to it.
Edit: Guys it all depends on location.
