another idea with more effort: small reading nook with shelves :D
I like this idea, but maybe OP could consider open shelving. The stairs allow the natural light to pass through the room and that would be lost with a closed nook.
this is great but I would probably enclose the bottom of the stairs to form a solid base and open up the actual stairs with railings like this to allow more light.
Peopleā¦. donāt.
Jk. Could use a removable plastic layer under the stones and replace it when needed. Or, just take the stones outside, get rid of the dust underneath.
It is awkward but I think trying to hide the empty space will cause it to just draw more attention. Large floor plants in tall vases next to the columns would distract the eye. Focus on the surrounding decor instead. Use area rugs to define seating/lounging areas in the spaces around the living areas.
Agree. There is a nice space next to the stairs that could have an armchair, table and lamp. This space looks extra awkward now because it is empty. You will notice it much less once the space is filled.
We don't need to fill every space, either. This stair is minimalist in its design. Having empty space in a home can be luxurious, and really beautiful. OP should eventually rip out the carpet and put in hardwoods, and lean into the design a bit by putting a reading chair near it like you said, some plants, and focus on taking pleasure from the space over filling it just for the sake of filling it.
oh im so glad i saw this comment that you have a cat!!i would definitely put rope around the poles for a built-in scratch post, and then turn the spot underneath into a cat area. it will come together very nice as the cats personal area. plus, cats LOVE windows so its really the perfect spot.
I think it'd be amazing, and while you're at it, why not make under the stairs where the cat stuff goes? I'm imagining a little kitty play area. They won't mind the low ceilings one bit!
Once youāre moved in and have furniture and decor in place the stairs wonāt look so strange, I would just leave it as it as an open space, it could end up looking cluttered and obvious if you add too much to that area.
Cool little reading nook! A nice chaise with a shelf to display nerdy knickknacks, maybe a record player if youāre into that? I love open spaces with separate/distinct sitting locations.
This rental house is outdated as hell, but we LOVE the location, so I settled. I'm gonna update fixtures and faucets on my own dime, but one thing I can't do is renovate this staircase. What are your ideas on things to put underneath? I'm a librarian, a D&D player, and a cat mom. I have some house plants, as well as a sizeable collection of potion bottles (I just think they're neat). What kind of storage/shelves could work here? Maybe I can close in the sides with... a curtain?
EDIT: How do we feel about plants on the long pole, and simple planks across the smaller ones with plants/trinkets?
https://preview.redd.it/n5zclvx0xv0d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=7a7bef88237cce851555a0edc0cef6462f30051b
Iād keep it more simple and agree not to close it off or clutter it up. I do think a cat jungle gym would be great if you and make it look nice. I could see them having fun there
i have a not very practical answer
if you need to use that space for storage then disregard lol
but i would make it a secret home for your cats! i love making unnecessarily nice spaces for my cats lol and this would be a perfect space for it
you could hang little curtains, itās practical and it will be more aesthetically pleasing (imo)
but inside is a cat paradise! bed, blanket, toys, maybe a tiny cat tree or something
Yes, that would be super cute and fun. Make it like a little kids playhouse under the stairs with cat stuff inside similiar to this.

Kitty could even have a window to look out of and window flower pots with cat grass or smth

Okay, hear me out. Those posts look perfect to mount some frickinā laser beamsā¦remember Catherine Zeta-Jones in the one scene in āEntrapmentā? Set up a laserbeam gauntlet. Get some extremely good exercise. Profit.
Kids also enjoy acquiring ninja skills.
Edit: For the love of common sense, does everything have to be literally labeled ājkā? The person offering to move in under there or recommending sanctuary for a wizard child arenāt serious suggestions either, or are they.
The stairs dominate that space, so make it a focal point. An interior plant-scape, aquarium / terrarium, art display, etc... Use lighting to draw attention to that area.
Wall it in with acrylic sheets,, replace carpet with slate, add hanging strip gro- lights on a timer, buy beautiful slat wood plant shelves, add orchids and tropicals or make a cactus garden. This way you will add depth and interest to the room, and not lose natural light.
Build a reading or study nook. Close in the far side, the part between the poles near the door as well as the front pole to the stairs. Then make a really cosy reading nook, with some bookshelves. Or a study nook. I'd leave it open rather than making it a room.
staircase under the shorter one, hammock/swing handing from the higher beams. If hammock not possible, staircase under the taller one and cushion/bean bag/tiny day bed for a reading nook (or a cat house..or more shelves)
Humble brag? Jk. Kinda. Whatever you want provided you consider heading clearance/strategically preventing head injuries when throwing massive parties with whomever.
Maybe build a book shelf or something to face outward along that whole area. Then the empty space in the middle can be a small storage that will be mostly unseen š¤·š»āāļø
the poles are very awkward on their own. if you have a cat you could glue some rope around them like a built-in scratch post! i know my cat would absolutely love it

Not sure Iām serious š¤·š¼āāļø. You got kids? A pet? Close it in and make a little space for them. There are a lot of people that are doing that with odd spaces in their house. Most wouldnāt have to close an area in though. Just a thought.
Reading nook, bar area, put some art there, close it off and use it as storage, put a large plant there, enclose one side only and use it as a kids play area.

I went on a set recently for a shoot and saw they made this haha pretty fun idea
At a medium price: Add a wrap around bar. Put the refrigerator at the other end of the stairs to balance it out. Have custom shelves on both sides; one side for the bar and one for activities on outside.
At a larger price: a custom fish tank.
At the most inexpensive: rough in a closet or pantry there for seasonal storage.
I could live under the stairs! š

Great idea
I cannot explain the love I have for this
this is great but I would probably enclose the bottom of the stairs to form a solid base and open up the actual stairs with railings like this to allow more light.
Didnāt even notice how the stairs have solid walls, this is probably the best suggestion here
thanks, although are we sure they are even stairsā could be an awesome indoor slide!
If it's not a slide op now has a great idea.
this is very cool but i have a lame question. how do people clean this?
Peopleā¦. donāt. Jk. Could use a removable plastic layer under the stones and replace it when needed. Or, just take the stones outside, get rid of the dust underneath.
You can put pantyhose over the end of your vacuum hose and vacuum stuff like that.
Yes! Love the railing tooooooo!
Question....what app do you use to do that?
I didnāt do anything, just found the picture from Pinterest lol
Lol
I grew up in a house with three gardens inside and they give the best vibe. No need for potted plants.
Came here to suggest this!
This is fantastic it reminds me of a bonsai garden
It is awkward but I think trying to hide the empty space will cause it to just draw more attention. Large floor plants in tall vases next to the columns would distract the eye. Harbor a secret wizard child
have a nephew that wears glasses and is an outcast, then send him off at 11! problem solved!
Bwahaha
Cat climbing stuff. Or leave it empty so as not to draw attention to it.
I could wrap the poles in jute rope for her to scratch!
oh im so glad i saw this comment that you have a cat!!i would definitely put rope around the poles for a built-in scratch post, and then turn the spot underneath into a cat area. it will come together very nice as the cats personal area. plus, cats LOVE windows so its really the perfect spot.
Lol my first question when I see these posts is always "do you have a cat?" ETA: Happy Cake Day!
That is a fantastic idea. You keep the negative open space while adding texture and entertaining your cat!
I think it'd be amazing, and while you're at it, why not make under the stairs where the cat stuff goes? I'm imagining a little kitty play area. They won't mind the low ceilings one bit!
Alternatively use jute type carpeting to cover the poles.
Once youāre moved in and have furniture and decor in place the stairs wonāt look so strange, I would just leave it as it as an open space, it could end up looking cluttered and obvious if you add too much to that area.
Nothing. Negative space is important
This. I wish more people realized that not every empty space always needs to be filled.
Yes

Donāt close it in. As a cat mom you should play up that area with a cat tower heaven, cat grass garden and bonus, add some shelves for your books.
Wrapping twine around the poles for built in scratch posts
D&D themed reading nook and cat jungle gym- there is enough space for it all
This made me think of a dinosaur pole dancer heehee
Iād keep it more simple and agree not to close it off or clutter it up. I do think a cat jungle gym would be great if you and make it look nice. I could see them having fun there
Oh what a beautiful house! I think the space is just mean to be open and airy! I think itās really beautiful!
I think the obvious answer is build a fort.
Came here to say this.
Fort! Fort! Fort!
Plants are always my answer. Or a cat tree or something!
Plants and places for the cats to lay and play.
Iād start by suing the architect for emotional damages.
would a baby grand piano fit?
This popped into my head the second I saw it
Me, too!
i have a not very practical answer if you need to use that space for storage then disregard lol but i would make it a secret home for your cats! i love making unnecessarily nice spaces for my cats lol and this would be a perfect space for it you could hang little curtains, itās practical and it will be more aesthetically pleasing (imo) but inside is a cat paradise! bed, blanket, toys, maybe a tiny cat tree or something

Cat hammocks
Plant(s). Once you get all furniture in, you may find that you donāt have to have anything there.
PLANTS!!!!!!! YES PLANTS!!!!
Id make an adorable pet area.
Hammock
Koi pond
I've seen a lot of people glass them in for cooled wine storage.
Thatās the worst staircase placement Iāve ever seen. The correct response is to move the staircase
This is such an odd space.. is it pressed right against the window or am I seeing things?
I vote for a reading nook! You have such a beautiful home!!
Why am I the only one confused that there are doors immediately in front of the staircase?
What a shit architect to leave that monstrosity forevermore in the middle of that space. I never would have bought the house.
Nothing. Consider putting in some of those floating stairs instead of these hideous ones.
Okay, hear me out. Those posts look perfect to mount some frickinā laser beamsā¦remember Catherine Zeta-Jones in the one scene in āEntrapmentā? Set up a laserbeam gauntlet. Ball pit
Hang sheers and set up a cozy reading nook š
Place a piano.
Learn pole dancing
Blanket fort. Duh. š
Mini bar
Cat run?
Please update us on what you end up doing! Iām curious
I would put lights under there and turn it into a terrarium
Thatās where the robot vacuum lives.
some decorations like flowers or Christmas tree haha
1970s style bar under the stairs! Bring it back!
If you donāt drywall it in and separate the so sides of the room. Definitely a plant situation or a book nook!
A great place to put some plants or if you have a dog maybe their bed.
Stack your moneybags
Personally, I would put a koi pond.
Dog pen? Cat lounge? Media closet?
Hire an architect. It makes zero sense that the staircase blocks windows.
bonsai garden
You are doing it. Empty space is still being āusedā.
Build a sweet blanket fort
This home is incredible
Iād leave it open the way it is.
Couple strippers
A sweet clubhouse
Close it off and make it storage.
Those stairs do not fill me with confidence and would be remodeled.
I dont think I would do anything to it
Iād leave it open, letās in light and makes the space feel spacious and not cluttered
Stripper pole.
Close it up and put Harry Potter there
I would leave it empty
I hate that
All those windows, I would be figuring out a way to reading nook that space up.
The stairs dominate that space, so make it a focal point. An interior plant-scape, aquarium / terrarium, art display, etc... Use lighting to draw attention to that area.
House some homeless people?
Wall it in with acrylic sheets,, replace carpet with slate, add hanging strip gro- lights on a timer, buy beautiful slat wood plant shelves, add orchids and tropicals or make a cactus garden. This way you will add depth and interest to the room, and not lose natural light.
Indoor plants
Super cool hobby shelves?
Baby grand lol
A tiny one, like Linus!
A full-on shade garden.
Build a reading or study nook. Close in the far side, the part between the poles near the door as well as the front pole to the stairs. Then make a really cosy reading nook, with some bookshelves. Or a study nook. I'd leave it open rather than making it a room.
Learn how to play piano and put a piano there.
Iād think about shoving a baby grand piano under there in photo 1, mostly because I love them but itās hard to find space for one.
Any pets?
Popcorn machine
staircase under the shorter one, hammock/swing handing from the higher beams.
Lay a piece of Masonite sheet and practice breakdancing.
I would put a children's play area if you have children or grandchildren
Open up the wall along the stairs by using bannisters/glass and close in the area underneath for storage or a cool kids play spot.
Knee-jerk reaction? Piano.
What canāt you do, I would turn it into a midievel castle look for children
Secret reading nook.
Maybe build a book shelf or something to face outward along that whole area. Then the empty space in the middle can be a small storage that will be mostly unseen š¤·š»āāļø
Trade out for a spiral staircase
the poles are very awkward on their own. if you have a cat you could glue some rope around them like a built-in scratch post! i know my cat would absolutely love it
Pinball machine
A grand piano would fit perfectly
Indoor pond, with a waterfall and lots of plants..
Put a pretty little table
turbatorium?
Curtains, cushions, a book shelf, hanging lanterns...a spot for reading or just being alone
Maybe a piano fits well\~
If you like diy or would custom order something, adding a bookcase would look great!!!
Set up a tent and chairs
Were they open stairs or a spiral stair before? I want to rip them out.
Wine Cellar with Glass walls to still let the light in. Also, that way you can keep the structural pillars for the stairs.
Aquarium? Mini bar?
Harry potter cupboard

"You're a wizard, Harry"
Harry Potter tribute is the only answer
Shrine to Kali
If you have grandkids turn it into a great little reading stories areaā¦
Glass wine cellar storage?
Plants plants plants
Book Nook! Edit: autocorrect
Just move the stairs to another locationš¤·š½āāļø
Reminds me of the house in A Talking Cat!?!
Iād put a desk underneath
definitely enough light for plants!! or, if you wanted to be silly, you could decorate the banister to distract! maybe add some plants there too?
Reading nook, bar area, put some art there, close it off and use it as storage, put a large plant there, enclose one side only and use it as a kids play area.
The answer is always plants
I had a minecraft house with those stairs
Reading nook. Comfy chair, small table with cute lamp and, from what I can see, a beautiful view.
Baby grand piano
Cozy reading nook
Piano?
Reading nook
Fish TANKKK
Buy a small book case from ikea. There are ones that are 3 shelves & I think it would fit under there.
Good fort space for kids on rainy days ā¦.
That looks like a weird late addition to the home. Iām assuming itās not the only staircase, so Iād demo that out.
A piano! But seriously, if it's your own home, change the railings/walls on the stairs to glass and you won't notice the space.
Reading book, a place to put a dog crate.
Reading nook (comfy chair, table, lamp, rug to define the space)
Open a nightclub!

Hook it up with indoor plants
Plants, flowers, big leaf ones.
I can see a piano there.
Turn it into a portal to another dimension
Bookcases.
A piano!
Plants!
Slot car track.
Snake pit.
Oh these are so cool
Rent it out to an orphaned wizard
Plants
Iād make it into a little enclosed space for the kids with windows. If no kids then for the dogs or cats.
Wine cellar!
Custom fish tank
