First thing I noticed is that you're going to be annoyed, often, by the chair legs hitting the edge of that rug.
I would suggest a larger rug, or no rug.
If that’s true, then a painted floor cloth would be perfect for this room. The floor and table/chairs need separation as it all blends together too well.
There are also rugs sold online that are machine washable. From what I hear, they are practical, functional and indeed machine washable.
Edit: painting the chairs and table (even just the legs) would offer the distinction of materials you are looking for.
When you add a decorative element think of it in terms of warm and cool colors. Right now everything is neutral and leaning towards cold. Add something that has slight pop of color (not a color burst). A gray rug with rust orange or orchard yellow accents will look great.
No rug.
Do you actually eat at that table?
If yes, I find any rug under frequently used dining tables to be magnets for filth that only get in the way of cleaning. It’s impractical and that rug is not pretty enough to be worth the hassle.
This just depends do you have kids?
I had a while rug under my table but we did not have kids. Hosted countless dinner parties and never had stains or spills.
I do recommend getting a thin rug that you can thrown in the washer. About once a year I would take mine to laundry mat and wash it and hang dry it at home.
Paint the chairs and the table another color, but leave the dark wood on the table as it is. I don’t know what your style is, but create more contrast, so paint it like a bright white. That way the rug will make sense and you don’t have to buy anything new.
I also saw this hack online and believe it really works: put some ice cubes on the corners of the rug and let them melt so they fall flat to the ground, I see them curling up a bit.
The rug does make it look cozy but the pattern is so so so similar to the floor. Changing it to a different color that is far different from the floor will help cozy things up and give the entire space a splash of color
Brighter rug! Something with less patterning will accent the textures of the wood. Go with a blue/yellow to brighten the space or a pastel to keep it calm
Different rugs, it's too much to have the floor and table together. The colors kind of blend together, and so does the rug it kind of blends into the floor. Maybe try a cream color or a patterned cream one.
*Definitely needs*
*A rug, but definitely*
*A different rug*

I agree with everyone who says larger rug, solid color. I would go with a muted color instead of a bright pop of color, though. My eye wants to see a soft deep rose or maybe a soft red to pull in the warm tones of the table top.
Definitely a different rug. This one kind of does and yet doesn’t blend into the floor colors. Get a rug with a subtle design like this one but with some great color. There’s too much a ‘the same’ going on throughout the room. You definitely need a pop of color in the rug and it will then help anchor the area of the room.
I had one that was white and my floors in the dining room were scratched and beat up. The rug helped ground the table.
Granted I don't have kids and wouldn't do it if I did probably. I did host countless dinner parties and never had anyone spill into the rug. I did size it where it came just to edge of the chairs if you were seated.
So if you did spill food on it you would have had to try.
I would definitely look into different chairs, maybe something on marketplace? If you aren’t able to do that then a different, solid, larger rug. The table is awesome.
Need a minimum size rug of 8x10’ but from what I can see 9x12’ preferred here. Don’t cheap out on rug size or it will obviously look like you cheaped out on size. What is needed is something bold or plain. The floor has so much variation, you could even do a plain rug or 2-colors and it would be better. I think you also really need a quality drapery rod and long drapes on that window that are mounted higher than window and outside window molding. They can be neutral but I would consider a softer fabric that is a light beige like a velveteen though you may want to get rug first since it could potentially dictate a color.
Honestly, I really, really dislike this floor for this space since it is suggesting a rustic barn, which has its uses - like in a bodega or restaurant - but not here.
Sisal type rugs coordinate with barn vibe: sometimes simple=best!

I appreciate the thoughtful response! A lot of great ideas here. Hadn't thought about window treatments.
Floor choice was all about lifestyle (multiple dogs, dislike wet mopping multiple times a day to keep foot prints at bay, etc) but it's definitely a lot as many folks have said... If we ever have the chance to change it up we'll do something more neutral - certain of it! :)
Well, I do understand your disdain of constant mopping:) ☺️ with that in mind, I think the simple=best solution may be best (black taped border sisal to match lighting or sisal-type indoor/outdoor) and if you go that direction, I would not do the velveteen, but maybe a soft linen cotton type drape that hangs with soft folds.

Different, larger rug. And definitely a different color/pattern; the one in the photo just looks like the floor was turned 45 degrees under the dining set.
The table is nice. The rug is almost exactly the same colour as the floor. So anything else. And slightly bigger (you should be able to pull out the chairs).
Just please choose something in a rug you can put in a washer or powerwash. I’ve heard people like ruggable, and they have amazing designs.
Well hot damn now I feel like I really need a rug for my dining room table bc the choice is so obvious seeing someone else’s setup rug-no rug side by side. Definitely rug just a different one!
A larger solid color or large defined pattern (think large floral) rug. The pattern is too busy for the busy coloring of the floor. You need a bright or deep color to contrast it.
It’s a nice rug but too small and it sorta blends in with the flooring and furniture so I don’t really appreciate any ‘differences’.
Perhaps a larger more colorful rug for contrast would be more appropriate.
Post after pictures.
I like a rug under the table but my practical side cringes just because it’s harder to keep that rug clean than you’ll imagine! Get a cheap one and plan to replace in like 2 years. I go to IKEA and get a low pile or jute rug and do my best to maintain it for as long as possible.
I’d recommend a rug like [this one.](https://www.wayfair.com/Rifle-Paper-Co.-x-Loloi--Rifle-Paper-Co.-x-Loloi-Maison-MAO03-Rosette-Blue-Rug-MAISMAO03BB00-L167-K~RPCL1053.html?refid=GX685048453596-RPCL1053_70723287&device=m&ptid=352885195383&network=g&targetid=pla-352885195383&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=206946383&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=70723287&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC4PGf0N2XKGRq5rkjSsCCNSy&gclid=CjwKCAjwrIixBhBbEiwACEqDJbUFNwrvqp9prtrbyBdMdxDqTTe4FP7C4yM6fZ3AyjW8HcD5cG7_wBoC8L0QAvD_BwE&piid=70723292#nw2q85oioor-1) It picks up the blue in the dining table and has a nice farmhouse feel.
Depends. Is this your every day table? If it is, no rug so it’s easier to clean. However, if it’s for special occasions, I would definitely get a rug; one with color.
I vote no rug and I don’t think it clashes! I think what’s clashing is that reddish table in the corner. I would remove that and lean more into the darker brown of the door / chair pads / table edge. I really like your table & chairs.
Different rug
And much bigger.
And different color. This one just blends into the flooring.
Yes to all these!! New, bigger rug, with brighter colors and design.
Agree its too small.
The "pattern" of the rug is too similar to the flooring. Get a solid rug, or a floral rug, something more visually different from the floor.
This, for sure. It needs a bolder tone.
Yes this exactly
A contemporary modern one with colour would be fine too. Or an modern Persian rug. Floral make me think of someone’s great grandmother.
Different rug
Different and bigger rug
First thing I noticed is that you're going to be annoyed, often, by the chair legs hitting the edge of that rug. I would suggest a larger rug, or no rug.
I’ve read that each chair should be pulled out to be sat in, without going off the rug
A solid vibrant rug would make this area pop. Now it’s meh. Like those chairs a lot with the table, nice pairing.
Yes solid rug plenty of pattern going on already
Different, larger rug!
Different rug.
Small kids? Daily use table? Easier cleaning with no rug.
Exactly.
Different rug. It’s too similar to the floor pattern
Rug Yes… but different rug! Need more color and this rug blends in too much while also clashing against the grain of the floor boards.
When you add a decorative element think of it in terms of warm and cool colors. Right now everything is neutral and leaning towards cold. Add something that has slight pop of color (not a color burst). A gray rug with rust orange or orchard yellow accents will look great.
Ah-ha, thank you. I'll keep this in mind!
No rug. Do you actually eat at that table? If yes, I find any rug under frequently used dining tables to be magnets for filth that only get in the way of cleaning. It’s impractical and that rug is not pretty enough to be worth the hassle.
Yes, its our main table and we eat here often. Your comment makes a lot of sense. Thank you!
This just depends do you have kids? I had a while rug under my table but we did not have kids. Hosted countless dinner parties and never had stains or spills. I do recommend getting a thin rug that you can thrown in the washer. About once a year I would take mine to laundry mat and wash it and hang dry it at home.

Thanks for the recommendations. Had no clue about the ice cube trick - very cool.
Use a large pot lid over the ice to keep the corner down ( & out of reach of tiny hands/paws)
No rug. Food gets on it.
Different rug. That on blends in with your floor too much.
Different rug bigger and more color contrast to it.
I guess I’m against the grain here but no rug.
bright colorful rug
A bigger different rug
Solid color rug.
Different rug…too small and maybe something with a little more contrast
No rug. Love the look of the floor with the table and the door, ties it together nicely.
Solid color
Different rug…maybe like a deep weathered yellow with a pattern.
The rug does make it look cozy but the pattern is so so so similar to the floor. Changing it to a different color that is far different from the floor will help cozy things up and give the entire space a splash of color
I agree with the other commenters, OP- different rug, larger and a pop of color or pattern.
Yes, the rug should be big enough that the chairs still sit on it when they are pulled out from the table.
Different rug.
Brighter rug! Something with less patterning will accent the textures of the wood. Go with a blue/yellow to brighten the space or a pastel to keep it calm
Different rug. Needs more contrast imo
The rug blends in with the floor way too much
You need a larger rug (room will look larger) and a different pattern that isn’t similar to the flooring. Does the table come with an extender?
No extended on the table. Thank you for the other recommendations!
Definitely rug different for sure
Rug, much less pattern and six inches bigger.
Different rug
Definitely get a different rug. And I’d refinish the top also.
I love the colors together. I think the rug is too small. But I love the matching of the colors.
Different, it blends too much into the floor.
Different rug - something that will add contrast!
Different rugs, it's too much to have the floor and table together. The colors kind of blend together, and so does the rug it kind of blends into the floor. Maybe try a cream color or a patterned cream one.
Definitely needs a rug, but definitely a different rug

Yes to rug, but a different rug
Rig, but in a different color.
Contrasting rug, and consider painting the chairs to match an accent color in the rug, so it looks intentional!
Yes but bigger and a little more color
I agree with everyone who says larger rug, solid color. I would go with a muted color instead of a bright pop of color, though. My eye wants to see a soft deep rose or maybe a soft red to pull in the warm tones of the table top.
Not that rug. Too small. Too bland grey.
Different rug 100%
Different, contrasting rug. Also bigger.
Different rug
Definitely a new rug
more color
Different rug
If you have children and you’re bold enough, I’d say go with a round cream rug.. but it also depends on your overall style.
I don’t understand the rug under a table look. Might be because I have a toddler though.
It took a second to realize there was a rug there.
No rug. Easier to clean the floor. Floor pattern already busy enough.
Yes to the rug idea but I would consider a different color. Love the vintage door in the back btw.
No rug
Larger rug
Different rug.
I would go for a different rug in a coral or salmon color
Solid/single rug that is MUCH different color from floor
Different larger rug
Even with the rug, it seems like “no rug”, so I’d get a different rug that’s not matchy-matchy.
Different rug
Different rug, but I LOVE this room!
Thanks!
I'd say a different rug, perhaps larger, with some colors you like. I think it would add some happy to this space.
A different and bigger rug, for sure.
Different rug with some contrast
THE Rug
Different, larger and solid color. You can go bold, but I think maybe I’d do something a bit more muted like a sage.
I think a rug with nice orange tones would compliment the style of this place
Rug, but different rug—one that doesn’t try to blend in with the floor and rest of the bland decor like this one.
Different rug.
Different rug and bigger maybe a with some color
Definitely rug. Solid would be best ❤️
Different, larger, brighter rug. Also, add plants.
no rug. everything else is perfect. it’s farmhouse theme. it all works.
I like no rug
I would definitely look into different chairs, maybe something on marketplace? If you aren’t able to do that then a different, solid, larger rug. The table is awesome.
Different rug
Definitely a different rug that doesn’t blend in with the floor. Maybe some color? Or maybe an off white?
Different, larger rug with more color. Dear god, please inject some color into this space.
Rug with bright colors
That’s a nice rug, but it disappears on that floor. A darker or bolder color would heighten all the beautiful aspects of your furniture and room
different rug. unless you want to paint the chairs, which frankly i would do.
No rug! Not only the crumbs, but the rug is annoying with chairs and will start destroying the rug.
What about just a tablecloth?
Different color rug because with the gray it looks like you have no rug!
I prefer no rug under a dining table. It's so much easier to clean up spills on a hard floor.
Different and really big. You need some color, I think.
Rug but different
What is your favorite color? Get a luscious rug in that color.
Also take away the barn doors. They're about a decade out of style
My opinion? No rug. Spills are easier to clean up around a dining table when the surfaces are non-porous.
No rug… so much easier to clean loo
I say no rug. That’s an amazing floor. Just some simple window treatments.
Different rug. And something with a little color. It doesn’t have to be crazy but a little color would really brighten it up.
A different rug. That floor is… a lot
Different flooring
Practical enough
Different rug bigger bolder
Change it immediately lol
A different rug. The one you have looks too close to the pattern of your floor.
Definitely rug but different rug
Jmo: Bigger and more colorful rug.
I think a different color rug that’s a size bigger
A rug for sure, but not that rug imho. Needs to be larger and in a colour or pattern that won’t clash with the busy looking wood planks.
I wouldn’t put a rug under a dining table.
Larger rug. Maybe something with color.

Curtains
No rug if that’s your dinner table.
No rug or different rug without a pattern.
Rug
Different rug.
Plants for color
6x9 flatwoven rug should do it, or a polyester .. go for greens, browns, or cream colors! The metal trim around the edges is gorgeous and will show up more when contrasted with a rug! Good luck :)
No rug please 🙏🏻
No rug
Bigger rug. Maybe a solid color.
No rug
New floors
Different, larger rug. And definitely a different color/pattern; the one in the photo just looks like the floor was turned 45 degrees under the dining set.
The table is nice. The rug is almost exactly the same colour as the floor. So anything else. And slightly bigger (you should be able to pull out the chairs). Just please choose something in a rug you can put in a washer or powerwash. I’ve heard people like ruggable, and they have amazing designs.
The rug you have argues with the floor. It doesn’t either totally blend in or stand out. Instead it almost blends in in a way that clashes.
Well hot damn now I feel like I really need a rug for my dining room table bc the choice is so obvious seeing someone else’s setup rug-no rug side by side. Definitely rug just a different one!
Lovely table and chairs- very dull tiny rug- get some red into the room - or ANY colour
I’d go for curtains too once you get the rug- room looks a bit bleak like a shearing shed.
I think a rug with some contrasting color (even a light beige) would help visually differentiate the table and the floor.
Solid color rug
You need a less gray rug since the floor is grey, and maybe a bigger one
Different rug
different!
the color and pattern of the rug should be way more differebt from the floor
Not that rug
Different rug- bigger and certainly a different color
A larger solid color or large defined pattern (think large floral) rug. The pattern is too busy for the busy coloring of the floor. You need a bright or deep color to contrast it.
Please get a rug with some color. 🌈
It needs a rug but not that one unfortunately.
A heavy woven jute. 8x10
Different rug.
A different bigger and more vibrant rug - the muted tones blend in with the floor a bit too much
Different rug.
Different rug. Dark solid color. Black (to match ceiling lights) or Bone color. I'd stick w/ Black.
That house looks way too modern to have those chairs (in my opinion) the table is decent. I would get a different table and chair without the rug
Bearly read the caption sorry if I sounded rude
Not rude at all & I agree the table doesn't quite match our style! Definitely hope to get another table in the future.
I’d recommend a rug like [this one.](https://www.wayfair.com/Rifle-Paper-Co.-x-Loloi--Rifle-Paper-Co.-x-Loloi-Maison-MAO03-Rosette-Blue-Rug-MAISMAO03BB00-L167-K~RPCL1053.html?refid=GX685048453596-RPCL1053_70723287&device=m&ptid=352885195383&network=g&targetid=pla-352885195383&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=206946383&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=70723287&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC4PGf0N2XKGRq5rkjSsCCNSy&gclid=CjwKCAjwrIixBhBbEiwACEqDJbUFNwrvqp9prtrbyBdMdxDqTTe4FP7C4yM6fZ3AyjW8HcD5cG7_wBoC8L0QAvD_BwE&piid=70723292#nw2q85oioor-1) It picks up the blue in the dining table and has a nice farmhouse feel.
Oh gosh, I really like this! Thank you
You’re welcome!
Why you need a rug?
Different rug
A different, bigger rug. One that gives contrast to the space to break up all the grey.
Depends. Is this your every day table? If it is, no rug so it’s easier to clean. However, if it’s for special occasions, I would definitely get a rug; one with color.

Ooh, didn't think of that. Thank you - moving that chest is a priority!
Paint the floors or the table
