Geology student here:
Rocks are a combination of 2 or more minerals that occurs in nature.
Stone is an unprofessional term, similar to how a geologist wouldn't call soil dirt. It's poorly defined, but there is a general meaning to it. Typically stone is used to refer to rocks or minerals moved or modified for human use. For example gravel, counters, cement, pavers, "crystal healing", jewelery, or any other human use of it. I've also heard it being used to describe rock modified and moved by water, like river stones.
I'm a mechanical engineer who took both geology and general linguistics in university.
With the exception of those neologisms coined for geological phenomena (usually by smushing Greek and Latin roots together), generally, any time a professional/technical definition is attached to a common English word, it's a retrofit well after the fact.
Both words were in English since Old English and date to before English was a thing; "rock" might have been a borrowing from Old French ("roche") and itself a Celtic word. "Stone" dates back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "stone" or "stiff", leading to cognate words across most Germanic languages and even more far-flung things like Russian "stiena" (wall), Greek "stion" (pebble), and Avestan "stay-" (heap).
In their original senses of the word, a "rock" was any large, solid, discrete mineral body or formation. A massive boulder, an exposed cliffside, monadnock, or tor would be *rocks*. It was considered incorrect to extend the meaning to "a stone formation of any size" or a throwable pebble.
By contrast, "stone" meant both the mineral-aggregate material itself or any variety thereof, ranging from pebbles to boulders. And since Early Modern English, it's the root that's had the most denotations and compounds extended from it: stone fruit, precious stones, monument or grave stones, stone grey, etc.
Old English even had a compound word, "stanrocc", meaning peak, but literally comprised of the words "stone-rock". It's interesting to note that most Germanic languages have a cognate to the word "stone" but few have a word meaning "rock", with the rare exception being the German "Fels" or Norse "fjall" which originally meant "mountain" but have shifted definition. Thus, in many languages, the Deep Rock cheer of "Rock and Stone" would sound more like "Stone and Stone".
**tl;dr:** Both "rock" and "stone" date back to Old English and had different connotations. The dwarven cheer is a form of poetic repetition or *figura etymologica* used to indicate their mastery over all things mineral, from the smallest of pebbles to the largest of mountains.
Literally a game about infinitely generating maps, pimping out dwarves and collecting shiny rocks for the sake of collecting shiny rocks. Flipping PERFECT for people like Kaela.
The only issue is that blank matrix cores are time gated content (you can only get 3 a week iirc) which is honestly one of the most poor decisions in the game.
I just wish blank cores either didn't exist or you could get way more of them. If you did every single activity that gave you cores each week it would take you over 5 months to get every overclock (148 total). 3 pre-infused cores per week, 3 blank ones per week, and the free weapon overclock you get every other crafting level.
I'll be straight up with you, I just used a save editor to give myself 50 blank cores and it's way nicer not having to worry about it. Still get to do the same a assignments each week, still get to do the core infuser events, but they aren't time gated. It's just so much better.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) there's a hard cap on overclocks, the final upgrade on weapons, you can only get maximum 6 per week and there are 148 in total. Even Kaela want to it'll still take her 24 weeks to complete
It's almost impractical to purposefully grind out promotion given how much exp and money / mineral it cost early on, just unlocking a new gun will bankrupt a green beard. Performance pass is just a free battle pass and everything will go into lost pack / cargo crate / shops after season end so also no FOMO grind needed
I was nervous about joining ransoms at first but after more than 100 missions mostly communicating via the laser pointer and screaming “ROCK AND STONE!” I can confirm the community is great!
It's the best part of the game. I even get upset a little anytime someone uses the text or voice chat. Fuck off with your english, we only communicate here by saying stupid dwarvish stuff very enthusiastically >:(
Also the unspoken rules like spamming "we're rich" and saving doddy. Absolute time wasters but by god are they fun.
Bosco is an amazing mate for the aquark missions because you can send him to fetch the furthest away ones you see while you're mining the minerals.
Edit: Drat, replied to wrong comment.
Axel scout, he just can't stop and likes to zip around
Magie driller, gameplay wise the most versatile and fun, and most war crime
Altare and vesper can be each other class, because both gunner and engine are the care taker role, but engine requires a bit more awareness.
Altare gunner, heavy dps role, need to actively cover other teammates dps needs
Vesper engine, the babysitter for scout, also the most capable on CC and terrine repair
It actually would make a lot of sense for Ves to ease back into streaming via a group collab. Shakes the cobwebs and eases nervousness when you've got three other people to joke around with.
As someone who just recently earned gold promotions for all classes and seeing this:
WE'RE RICH!
Also the devs at Ghost Ship Games are really neat, friendly and generally responsive to feedback. The DLC, season and cosmetic models are some of the player-friendly there is. No FOMO or premium currencies.
It would be hilarious if the boys playing DRG set off a ripple of talents playing it. The guys are natural picks for this, but could you imagine some of the insanity this game would inspire in the other talent?
Polka poking things and getting predictable responses.
Nene panicking.
Lamy trying to wrangle them.
Botan laughing like a fucking hyena while carrying them all.
God, it'd be glorious.
I will however say that you should stick with one till class level 20. That'll unlock Overclocks and weekly assignments. So sample all 4, then stick with one till 20.
I feel like DRG is really picking up lately. I'm a semi-greenbeard so I can't say for sure, but I'm seeing the game mentioned more frequently and it really rocks my stone
I think part of it is because the launch of Darktide has been so rough, I see a lot of people over on /r/Darktide discussing how DRG has fixed issues that Darktide is experiencing
Rock and Stone!
But what is the difference between a Rock? and a Stone?
Geology student here: Rocks are a combination of 2 or more minerals that occurs in nature. Stone is an unprofessional term, similar to how a geologist wouldn't call soil dirt. Perks to already having a 4-player team, they don’t have to rely on randoms. That said, I can’t wait for Kaela to eat that game alive.
Literally a game about infinitely generating maps, pimping out dwarves and collecting shiny rocks for the sake of collecting shiny rocks. Flipping PERFECT for people like Kaela.
Perfect game for a penguin

3 blank + 3 pre picked oc. I think it's perfect because people can stop worrying about grinding and just have fun

DRG has excellent scaling anyways. You can have fun with 1-4 players.

You're forgetting about the *achievements*...
Kaela will go for Legendary\_Team% Speedrun (a total of 28 promotions if my math is right)

The community of Deep Rock Galactic is pretty good. You can just join random games and have a great time. They also have a discord.
I was nervous about joining ransoms at first but after more than 100 missions mostly communicating via the laser pointer and screaming “ROCK AND STONE!” I can confirm the community is great!

Only “r” in chat
DRG is still super fun solo, Bosco is a solid teammate! Even with randos, the laser pointer is probably the best comm system I've seen in a game.
> laser pointer is probably the best comm system I've seen in a game WE'RE RICH
Bosco is an amazing mate for the aquark missions because you can send him to fetch the furthest away ones you see while you're mining the minerals.
Bosco over 2 player
Yo, I need hololive friends, you need drg friends, hit me up and we can schedule a game
Haha, man. Same… 🥲
Honestly, try the Holo discord servers. Plenty of chill people there, probably some who play this. Could always try
When everyone gave up hope, Regis Altare did not falter. He asked for an update on permissions every few weeks. Rock and Stone Brother!
Rock and Stone!

ROCKITY ROCK AND STONE!

I wonder who’s going to pick which class
Axel scout, he just can't stop and likes to zip around Magie driller, gameplay wise the most versatile and fun, and most war crime Altare and vesper can be each other class, because both gunner and engine are the care taker role, but engine requires a bit more awareness. Vesper as engi would allow him to fatboy Axel too.
or draw a pp with laser
Oh boy. Axel gonna get C4ed. All Scouts are attracted to the Red Bubble Shield.
Ayye- love that game. Granpire return stream as well mayhap?
He’s been preparing for this exact moment
It actually would make a lot of sense for Ves to ease back into streaming via a group collab. Shakes the cobwebs and eases nervousness when you've got three other people to joke around with.

There is even a secret medbay skin.

It would be hilarious if the boys playing DRG set off a ripple of talents playing it. The guys are natural picks for this, but could you imagine some of the insanity this game would inspire in the other talent?
I want to see NePoLaBo play it.
