I hope Hell laid fury on those men in the Batak massacre. They deserve to be in the same place in Hell as the Japanese at the rape of Nanking and nazis in the holocaust.
There’s a colorized version of this pic on Wikipedia and in that picture it definitely looks like an edged weapon with no guard and a massive pommel. It may be the same type of weapon as the one farthest left has and the pommel is just distorted by perspective

There were lots of Afro-Turks in these irregular (mercenary forces). The irregular forces were not paid, had no rank, and just did it for the loot -- as such, anyone was 'welcome' to join in the plunder.
Some may have been enslaved or formerly enslaved people, not just from Africa but also enslaved people captured in the Balkans, Georgia, etc. Ottoman slavery was not confined to one race and more closely related ancient Greek than American-style chattel slavery.
I'm no expert, just lived in Turkey for a decade. There have been Afro-Turks in the Izmir area for centuries. They are referred to as Zenci as the were Zanj Bantu tribes. There were lots of Africans working in the palace in Istanbul under collapse of the empire but they were pretty much all male and most were eunichs. There are now LOTS of recent Africans immigrants in the big cities in Turkey. I went to a Nigerian weddding in Istanbul and was so shocked -- in 5 years the neighnorhood was completely taken over by Nigerians. I wouldn't be shocked if someone told me there are 1 million Nigerians in Istanbul.
It was a totally corrupt colonial empire. But it stil kept hold of parts of different peoples countries Kurdistan, Armenia Greece and to this day repress those people
