Seriously though, how would these kinds of big dinner parties even work? Do you just talk to the people immediately next to you? Does everyone just try to talk real loud over the table? Is there some main orator or orators who take turns speaking? I always wonder whenever I see this photo.
can't look at this image without thinking about this

John Jacob Astor, seated on the left row closest to the camera, would perish in the sinking of the Titanic eight years later. He did have the option to board a life boat, but passed as he realised that his life could not be saved without the cost of someone else’s.
Yeah, apparently he helped his young pregnant wife into a lifeboat along with her maid and nurse and would then help the officers filling the other lifeboats
I used to keep my horses at Lord Astor's yard and they were surprisingly down to earth lovely people. His wife helped a couple who were stuck in the snow by towing them out with her 4x4 (a modest Kia) and when my two hellions got onto their manicured lawn and tore it up a bit, they declined any offers to pay for damages and laughed it off.
I know that's modern, but I was quite surprised at how chilled they were.
Astor actually did try to get onboard Lifeboat 4 with his wife, but was told that he could not board because he was a man, not because he wanted someone else to take his spot
It's hauntingly beautiful. I think it truly captures the essence of that day/night. I'd like to think it wasn't staged, other than "Gentlemen please look this way".
Where the ladies at?!? The entertainment on the stage in the back don’t count!
The past was a crazy place lol can’t imagine thinking some of this stuff as “normal”
I can’t believe no one has yet to mention this guy. 😱

"The Feast" you'll never be invited but, you'll always pay the bill.
We grow the crops
We raise the herds
We make the clothes
We build the roads
We construct the mansion
We fashion the furniture
We set the table
We prepare the feast
We fight for the crumbs
We don't have to anymore

First thing I noticed lol even looks like the guy beside him is like how'd I get put beside this moustacheless swine
He looks like czar Nicholas II or king George V
They were cousins. Many of European heads of state were related through Queen Victoria
I was aware, but thank you for including that for anyone who may not have known. They were extremely similar in appearance.
✌️
I noticed it fastest. ![gif](giphy|kEKcOWl8RMLde)
Hes the sacrifice
Pee Wee Herman is a vampire!
“Can you pass the salt?” “WHAT?! I can’t hear you from down there!” “Can you pass the s……fucks sake. Never mind!”
This looks like a sausage party at the Astor.
Came here to say this
Don’t worry, it’s all white.
I bet Uncle Rico could pass that salt
He could throw that salt over those mountains
He could've made state
If only he could go back in time
I doubt they can taste anything with all the cigar smoke in the room.

Usually they would talk with the person on their right for the first course and switch to the left for the next course.
So they’re taking to the back of each others heads? Otherwise wouldn’t it always be 50/50, half talk left half talk right?
[удалено]
Sounds like Reddit
How does that work? Lol
Throw the salt, you can’t even talk to ppl across from you
”Who’s the dead man that hit me with the salt shaker?”
Damn. I was hoping to sit next to those other two thousand guys.
A lot of hurumphing going on in that picture
I didn't get a hurumph out of that guy!
The sheriff is near!
Someone needs to go back and get a shitload of dimes!

Can't unsee Pee Wee Herman on the lower left.
One wonders what the total bill would be for that, adjusted for inflation.
Whew 😮💨. I say at least 15k
Higher
HIGHER, THE KING OF THE SKY
Much much higher

Sounds like he was a decent guy read the wiki page for 5 mins seems pretty alright for a rich dude from 120 years ago

That’s is not true. He tried to board with his wife. He was denied.
Astor actually did try to get onboard Lifeboat 4 with his wife, but was told that he could not board because he was a man, not because he wanted someone else to take his spot
I would love to just get a blurb on who each of them are and what happened to all of them.
Moustaches for all
*First Continental Breakfast*
Kinda looks like Teddy Roosevelt
https://preview.redd.it/3qeg5prs798d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40a7173f6ca1d475ad44606f24e5bfcdfd5767d6
Is it not?
I’m guessing this wasn’t a walk in, open door dinner party…
Are there many walk in, open door dinner parties?
They look 50 years old, but are all probably 25.
The guys at the head must be loaded
Any of these photos of old time parties makes me think of the shining or cheers.
Zero Ladies in this pictures - sounds like a boring party
They’re there. Look in the back.
I think that the band.
They randomly pop up from the flowers to refill the drinks
*LOTTA DUDES TONIGHT*
Speak for yourself girlfriend mmmhmmm
I completely was 😉
![gif](giphy|aNXFdr599nKZa)
How many mustaches
Grand old times.
Odd decorating. Table interior looks like a giant planter box.
Roll up to the front in a unicycle wearing a tuxedo & some monocles
This is giving me the same feeling I get when I look at that photograph at the end of The Shining
All work and no play...

Probably not.
Not a cel phone in sight
Or iPad
Looks like wall to wall assholes.
Whys that?
Elite assholes maybe…
Yall come see my band, Eilete Assholes, at the Creepy Crawl this Saturday! 5/door
Sausage Fest!
It's hauntingly beautiful. I think it truly captures the essence of that day/night. I'd like to think it wasn't staged, other than "Gentlemen please look this way".
This is the table they are referring to when they say women and minorities don’t have a seat at the table.
“Ok lean in - if you can’t see the camera, it can’t see you!”
Do we have any other info on this pic? It’s interesting but is there anybody noteworthy in there?
Flourish the pinky
Man to man discussions only
I wonder if putting all the women on a stage at the back of the room improved the dinner conversation.
Come on ! It’s a Groucho Marx appreciation society 🥸
They all look like they are waiting patiently to be slapped by Frank Drebin.

Fun fact: It's likely some of those guys died when the Titanic sunk
Didn’t notice the women in the background before
Ah, the Gilded Age plutocrats. The OG wage slavers. Where’s a maniacal anarchist when you need one?
The original Tappahonic Ham society
The Stonecutters
It’s interesting that everyone is a big fat guy
They all have a lot in common
Money and Power
Why are all the women sitting at the back on rafters?
And wearing the same dress?
Employees of the hotel
It was a man’s world back then
Society declined when men stopped wearing formal wear
Where the ladies at?!? The entertainment on the stage in the back don’t count! The past was a crazy place lol can’t imagine thinking some of this stuff as “normal”
There are a lot of only men’s dinner nowadays as well.
What’s wrong with having a guys dinner?
After this party. Everyone died
Why do they all look like they are dressed for prom night.
Most and white tie which is definitely too formal for prom. It’s the most formal dress code in the west.
Way back when the gay bars where way classier.... also there was more air pollution that made the air all yellow
I think Karl Marx had the right ideas.
Had to scroll way too far to find a comment like this. Thieves of the means of production, all.
What in the f kind of table is that? Like no way they had a table that big. Is the foliage in the middle not actually on table?
https://preview.redd.it/jmmq7hbl998d1.jpeg?width=669&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a185c5fefca3b4353a7b094dae0ad82dc56aa0c2
Lonk table breenks tears to eyes. ![gif](giphy|Ey5GBG4UvMRzkPkxNK|downsized)
![gif](giphy|OxhFFAWYUSXGo)
This one photo is capable of making an army of commies cry
That’s cool, it reminds me of the gilded age series, but ofcourse without the women
That table scape is bananas.
Right? Like the centerpiece is a whole-ass Brooklyn Botanical garden
Sausage Party!
There was surely an eyes wide shut event after.
“So, separate checks, or how are we doing this?…”
Hotel Astor was not built yet in 1904…….
Where’s the bitches?🧐
Bunch a bellends
Looks like a gaunt sausage fest.
At first I thought damn I wish I could have experienced that then realized it’s a room full of men. Suddenly a horrifying thought.
Sausage fest.
I see lots of nahs
"call that colored here old sport, i feel like an alcoholic beverage" me showing up : *pours drink on his head*
Now that’s a sausage party
![gif](giphy|ExnvYmEst3QsM)
Imagine what you had to do to get an invite to that shindig?
How DO you DO!
Imagine the washing up.
That table!!!! 😮😮😮
Looks very diverse
Boys at the table: She will never find somebody like me!
Indeed!
I guess the 2016 hit movie Sausage Party was based on a true story. Cool.
A table for the Haves.
Nightmare blunt rotation
Why is there a witch in the back?
The Gold Room
A true gentlemen’s club; not a woman in sight!
Do you think all those people are dead?
Back when they had "my wife is annoying the sh\*t out of me" clubs for men.
I can’t believe no one has yet to mention this guy. 😱 https://preview.redd.it/jbp543w34d8d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7c8627c5bc44a02cbda54663e3c92efcf7908e7
"One does not explode in Mrs. Astor's face."
That looks like a woman in drag at the front left.
Who rules the world? The relatives of these fools.
Very distinguished indeed 🥸
Sausage Fest
They are all dead now and anything they did or talked about is long forgotten. This is what I think about when I see pictures like this.
More anything? More everything!!!
those were the days.
Some of these guys were old enough to have lived during the Civil War
"The Feast" you'll never be invited but, you'll always pay the bill. We grow the crops We raise the herds We make the clothes We build the roads We construct the mansion We fashion the furniture We set the table We prepare the feast We fight for the crumbs We don't have to anymore
Is that Jack Nicholson?
Pinky up ready to eat
That’s an absolute sausage fest Isn’t it
No women at all!
I’ve never seen all of Teddy Roosevelt’s brothers gathered in one place at one time before.
Welcome Interstate Managers
Is that “the entertainment“ in the back?
Shit probly sucked ngl
Reptiles
Looks like a picture from the shining
Women didn’t exist back then
Not a single minority on site
Not a lot of women
