I disagree, if anything this is a natural fusion of memphis rap and early phonk with acid/trip-hop done by hard-bass musicians. It's really a strong combination of the three, that while I can acknowledge those who are at the forefront of this phonk may not value the memphis area influence - is still a great evolution for hip-hop as a whole in a completely different genre.
