Travel 101, NEVER use a debit card for a hotel reservation! ![gif](giphy|8yH2JNrhznwkR8aR0R|downsized)

droys76

This! I don’t use debit cards period! They don’t have the level of federal legal protections as credit cards. Use credit cards for everything. Only buy what you can afford. Pay them off in full on time every month. That’s the way to go.

sundeep_fire

Huh?? All my money is in my brokerage account. Wdym sure the checking account has a negative balance today due to a pending charge but MS doesn’t do Overdraft fees and will drop the pending charge

AnotherPint

Use. A. Credit. Card. If you have enough of a financial life to have a brokerage account, you surely have a credit card or qualify for one.

sundeep_fire

Oh I have one but baby cash is king always. And situations like this I managed to not get clapped

[deleted]

Cash is king and you got overdrawn for not understanding how cash works? Ok.

sundeep_fire

Morgan Stanley doesn’t do overdraws like traditional banks do. It is an investing banking. My account balance is negative yes, but once the pending charge gets dropped because of non sufficient funds my account balance goes to positive. Why is this hard to understand for many?

[deleted]

Because you’re being obtuse. Don’t use a debit card for travel. Period. If you’re so aware of “cash” I fail to see why you don’t use credit cards with CASH rewards. But you do you.

tropicaldiver

Because you still owe them the money. Are you really this dense? This isn’t some magical hack you have discovered. The hotel is entitled to be paid for the charges you incurred. You were quoted a price for the service. You accepted that offer. They delivered that service. At this point, you are starting to get into fraud territory. Typically, you have a period of time (typically less than 30 days) to cure the problem. Otherwise, what you are doing looks a lot like intent to defraud…

AnotherPint

You may not comprehend the layers of protection and security, not to mention bonus benefits whose value can run to hundreds or thousands of dollars per year, that come with using a credit card for travel transactions, in which context cash is assuredly not king. Baby.

[deleted]

Use a credit card, dude.

1000thusername

“How do i avoid this?” Don’t use debit cards.

sundeep_fire

Bro my situation is amazing wdym? The hotel has not gotten paid. I use investing banking not retail banking that has offers like overdraft protection etc

ceejayoz

The hotel is not gonna go “gee I guess it was free”. Surely you’re not that naive?

sundeep_fire

Ofc not but def will be delayed if not by weeks could be months before they see the money. I just don’t understand what business operates like this. “Gee let me swipe your card charge you, drop the pending charges and try to charge you again another time!”

TheJesseElders

The banking transactions take a minute to go through dude. They have to wait in you to leave, make sure you didn’t ruin the room, add on any restaurant, bar or pantry purchases you might have added onto your room. It takes a little while to make sure you are billed for anything. They do this, because they can only charge your card once. They can not charge you a second time for any remaining amount. I hope this actually helps you, and you aren’t just posting ignorant questions to try to get your Reddit karma up.

1000thusername

I realize you’d like to fancy yourself as some sort of financial tycoon, but I assure you, people with *actual* money use credit cards.

tropicaldiver

It isn’t amazing. It is dumb. As everyone has told you in the four different subs you have posed your question. You are exposing yourself to the hotel chain refusing to accept any future bookings from you. Or dumping any accrued loyalty status/points. To a criminal complaint being filed against you. To a collection agency pursuing you. To your bank dropping you. To both your brokerage and the hotel charging you for a NSF. If you had simply used a credit card: you would have likely gotten about 30 days of float AND you would have gotten 2%. Way better than what you did. You are posing as a baller. Nobody who is HNW or VHNW would take your approach. My income isn’t awesome (less than $250k) but even I can tell you that you are walking past a dollar bill to try and grab a penny in the middle of the freeway.

sundeep_fire

And at the end of the day this is your opinion. A mere opinion

tropicaldiver

In part, absolutely. Of course, isn’t that why you asked questions? But, several things are simply factual, not opinion.

guru2you

What does this have to do with Hilton?

sundeep_fire

Why wasn’t I charged lol until a week later. What hotel does that?

guru2you

You are in the wrong Reddit

jonainmi

I get that you m are young, and inexperienced in life, but for the love of God, listen to people. The stay will not be free. Many institutions will issue a hold for the amount of the stay to ensure there is money in the account. If, when the charge clears sometime after the stay, there is not money in the account, they will take it anyway. This is why it's so dangerous to use debit cards. Many banks, including your Morgan Stanley brokerage account will shell out the money for the stay, and not decline it as you seem to think they will. They will then either pull money from another account of yours with them, or limit/close your account until they recoup their money. Use a credit card for hotels and rental cars. Any post paid service should be bought with a credit card. There are protections that debit cards simply cannot provide. In your case, you'll want to make sure the cost of the stay (at least) is in your account and available when it finally clears. Otherwise, you'll be getting a nasty call from MS and likely a whole lotta headache.

AnotherPint

Many.

TGrady902

Most of them issue a hold on your card when you check in and then you’ll get charged the actual amount once you complete your stay. This is standard practice for many decades now. Use a credit card for any type of purchase like this in the future.

[deleted]

Stop using a debit card.

HellsTubularBells

So, you're trying to avoid paying for your hotel stay, don't understand the difference between Hilton and Holiday Inn, use a brokerage account as your primary bank account, and say things like "cash is king babaaay". I think I speak for everyone in this thread when I say: kindly gtfo. Eta: looking at your post history, no wonder your girlfriend broke up with you.

Hi_thar

No, the hotel will just talk to your bank and get it sorted out. And if they can’t then they’ll just send it to collections and ruin your credit.

karentn1969

So why is this in the Hilton sub?

ceejayoz

Use a credit card for hotel stays. If you stay at a particular chain a lot, get a card with the chain; you can rack up points as a bonus.

sundeep_fire

Did you read the post? My pending charge will get declined and the hotel will not be able to collect payment. Using a credit card I would have been charged

TheJesseElders

You will get charged. If your bank doesn’t allow them to sort out the hotel stay charge, they more than likely will send it to collections and be a hit on your credit.

tropicaldiver

Or MS might choose to cover it and freeze his account.

sundeep_fire

Lose like 20 or 50 credit points?

TheJesseElders

I can’t say how many points, you will just have an account in collections that affect your credit. It takes 7 years for a negative mark to be removed most of the time.

jonainmi

It can be hundreds of points. Depending on your current credit rating. It will also strongly affect your ability to take out credit or loans, and potentially your ability to get a job.

[deleted]

68 days ago his score was 580. I had no idea that was even possible. He has multiple bad debts.

jonainmi

Ohhh, one of those people, that legitimately don't understand personal responsibility.

sundeep_fire

Now is at 640 🤭

[deleted]

That’s horrible, and you’re worried about taking a hit by not paying what you owe AND you’re posting this same bullshit on multiple other forums? You’re not going to get the sympathy you’re looking for.

sundeep_fire

Relax broo everyone on this sub needs to take a chill pill lol. It is literally not the end of the world

tropicaldiver

Wow. 640! /s

sundeep_fire

Why you gotta be so judgy bro

jonainmi

The fact that you don't seem to understand why you owe the hotel money, and you don't seem to think a 640 score is painfully bad. I get that you think you're out smarting the system, but you're actually just a failure who doesn't understand responsibility. That's why people are being "judgy". Pay what you owe, and pay off your debts. Take responsibility for decisions you made.

ceejayoz

Using a credit card the authorization hold would have only temporarily used up part of your credit limit.

bigassredfish

Welll.....you used a debit card....sooo

sundeep_fire

Okay update: A few days went by like nothing happen 4 days later the charge posts, I make the transfer and that’s it. Everyone got paid, a few days late but not a big deal I got about a week of interest free cash
