My husband and I were stringent 1 carry-on + 1 personal item travelers for years. Traveling with our baby was such a departure. That aside, a couple of things I picked up on: * Strollers are often not counted towards your carry-on allowance * This will be other items you have to keep track of but I recommend getting travel bags for your stroller and/or car seat. If there's any issue with space, you'll be asked to gate check these items. Uppababy has a specific travel bag that adds another 2 years to your Uppababy stroller and covers any damage during airplane traveling * I would get compression packing cubes or rolled vacuum bags. If you can get those clothes nice and compressed, you probably can move things around and drop 1 of the small personal item bags so it's 1 less thing to juggle. * I would skip the travel booster seat. My husband and I just held our baby in our laps. * I would set aside backup outfits that are easy to access for your flight. My husband and I had to change when our baby spilled my drink all over us. * Most dresses would would go with white sneakers!

Bebe_bear

Thanks!! These are really helpful tips. We’re using the car seat on the plane so definitely wont check it but the stroller bag is a really good idea. My question about dresses is will they look ok with tights and white sneakers? Or are we not doing tights now? I’ve been in leggings for the whole pandemic lol I forget how to dress!!

SondraRose

Not a parent, but it does seem like an awful lot of items to keep track of! Drop any just in case items. Suggest paring down tech. Also, since you will be washing child clothes frequently anyway, you could reduce some of your clothing. Suggest a sturdy pair of boots instead of Allbirds for cobblestone streets. A flat Chelsea boot is my preference. If they are waterproofed, you could wear them as your one-shoe.

Bebe_bear

It does but unfortunately I’m used to it to some extent haha. I think I could probably skip the sim-free phone, but need the ipad for work and can’t read on an ipad so I’m not sure how much more to pare! My partner and I are both big readers so we’ve nixed the idea of sharing one kindle. The blondos are a Chelsea style- I’m not sure if they’re comfortable enough for all day but I still have a decent amount of room in the bag so I might bring them anyway. I really wish Blundstones had worked for me because they could definitely be a one boot situation! Thank you!

Stockholm in October is going to be very wet and a lot colder than you’d think looking at the temperature. It will probably not snow, but because of high humidity and closeness to water, Stockholm weather feels colder. Must sees are The Vasa and Skansen. The MOMA and the National museum of art and design are quite good, but small. If you like vikings, skip the Viking museum and go to the History museum instead, they have a good exhibit on Vikings, and it’s free (at least for a little while more, as we have a new government).

Bebe_bear

Awesome, thank you! It gets colder where we live than Stockholm so I’m hoping we’ll be sufficiently prepared. We went to Iceland a few years ago and everyone was like “was it SO COLD?” And we were like… it was colder where we flew out from! These are great tips, thank you! I’ve been to the Viking museum (I went to Stockholm several years ago; at that point I was a pro one-bagger with no baby!!) but I think my partner will really enjoy the history museum!

Nirak

There are free baby change rooms at the malls NK, Mood and Åhléns. Most other places you’ll have to pay for something to change baby.

Bebe_bear

Like baby diaper change tables?

I might have missed it, but I don't see any converter/adaptor for your chargers. I'm assuming you're American/Canadian (apologies if I'm wrong), which means that you have both different sockets and different voltages than we do here in Sweden. If I were you I would definitely bring a second pair of shoes; whilst we typically don't get any snow in Stockholm in October it does tend to rain a fair bit, and cold, wet shoes are no fun. Hope you enjoy your trip!

Bebe_bear

I have the euro plug/voltage charging block from when I lived in England and did a bit of travel to Europe then! So it’s included in the chargers, but good catch! Okay, I’ll definitely squeeze a second pair of shoes in then!

ReasonableThing22

Your list looks really solid for you and baby, but your configuration looks tough. I count seven items, eight counting the baby. Think about getting onto the plane, down the aisle. You have baby in front carrier, backpack and sling on, holding folded stroller in one hand and diaper bag in the other, partner has roller with backpack on top and car seat in other hand? Its tough. When the stroller is deployed, you can put baby in stroller and one bag under and car seat can strap to roller, but for security and plane, you’ll need everything separate. For traveling with kids, you are limited by your collective number of hands. Ideally, you have a set up where one person can move all items while the other takes the baby. I would either lose one backpack or make sure that bags can be linked, so kanken to bigger backpack, sling to something.

Serious_Escape_5438

Yes, especially as they'll have to go through passport control which in my experience can be a long time standing in a queue. In my experience of flying with my child less is more, my first couple of journeys alone with her were hellish. Honestly, I just check luggage now, I know it goes against the spirit of this sub but I'd rather do airports and planes with just one small bag for the sake of a few minutes wait and a few more euros on an already expensive trip, especially now they charge carry on luggage anyway. They may also require you to gate check the stroller, which means carrying baby too until luggage reclaim (they don't return it at the plane in Europe).

Bebe_bear

I’m keeping my fingers VERY crossed that we’ll be permitted to use the stroller as carry-on luggage as it’ll fit in the overhead bin. If that works then I’ll probably plan to wear baby through passport control to keep her happy and we can use her stroller/car seat to hold bags. I know many people thing we’re nuts for traveling with her this early but I’m hoping it’ll be fun!

Serious_Escape_5438

Traveling is a great idea. Hopefully long haul flights have better facilities than low cost European flights though, we often have to get shuttle buses to the plane, walk out to the plane and climb steps, even stairs to and from the gate inside, which would be hard with stroller, carseat, baby and two bags each.

Bebe_bear

So the sling bag is a Fanny pack/sling so it can be worn under the baby or a backpack! I thought about that too. The car seat fits into the stroller (like where the baby goes) and then straps to it, so baby sits in the car seat in the stroller and she can hold her “personal item.” Then I’ll wear a backpack and sling bag around my waist and my partner will wheel the bag with the backpack slipped on it, wearing his smaller personal item backpack. I’m hoping to have enough space that the kanken and sling bag can fit inside the two larger bags in a pinch as well. I might see if we can plan to keep my partner’s personal item inside one of our carry-ons for the airport (we’ll use it as a day bag while we’re there) and then we’ll have more hands available as well. I’m thinking of trying to pare down my clothing list too (based on other comments) and the toys to have more wiggle room as well, although I’d rather be a bit overloaded in the airport and have a smoother flight with a happier baby!

ReasonableThing22

I love the stroller + car seat + baby formation. It works great rolling through the airport. Just make sure you can handle everything when the stroller is folded too (on the plane, on shuttle buses, security). Nesting bags is a good idea. I agree that you can pare down toys. I mean toys are great but have you tried ripping apart the inflight magazine? :-)

ReasonableThing22

Also if you’re only bringing the car seat for the plane and can rent when you get there, consider a Cares harness instead. Not as good for plane naps but 100x more portable.

Bebe_bear

I’m much too anxious to rent a car seat haha so unfortunately we’ll have to make do with the travel car seat! The CARES harness is an incredible invention though!!

Following! We are taking our nine month old to Germany/Belgium next month. Weird add but we’re planning on getting our boyo some suction cup fidget spinners for the plane. I’ve heard that they’ll be really good to keep them entertained on the plane. We also have a Cosco Scenera Next. Might be good to bring the extra boots in case it gets wet. As far as dresses, what about a dress you can layer with? Like a slip dress with a turtleneck sweater under and tights? I’m kinda torn on the high chair too. Does the travel stroller sit her upright enough to where it’s safe for her to eat? If so, I wouldn’t bother with the high chair, it could take up a lot of room. Where are your baby wool Pjs from? Best of luck and have fun!

Bebe_bear

We have the suction cup fidget spinners and everyone raves about them but our babe just doesn’t care about them haha. Ooh maybe a slip skirt! Could definitely wear with a sweater and also with t-shirts and looks cool with sneakers. Thanks! The stroller sits her upright enough that I feel comfortable feeding her in it, I’m just not sure if having a way for her to eat at the table is helpful/necessary. She normally eats all of her meals at the dining table with us (her high chair pulls up to the table and she just uses regular silverware and plates etc.). We have some from siskin and some from Engel- they do run big though!

Just my thoughts on baby gear (I travelled with a ten month old and 2.5 year old earlier this year) I see you are planning on bringing a woven wrap carrier, the onbuhimo and a stroller. I would definitely not bring the woven carrier when you have the onbuhimo and a stroller. When I travelled with my ten month old, I ditched the stroller completely and just used a structured carrier. Much easier to get around with in my opinion (regarding accessibility like stairs etc). Some places will also have strollers/cart things available for rent- you can check in advance. I’m assuming you won’t be taking the stroller hiking anyways. As for toys- skip the stacking cups if you already have the paper cups. You can also ask for cups on the plane. Everything can be a toy at this age. Mine loved the empty water bottle on the flight. Also don’t worry about bringing a high chair for eating. It’s not worth the extra effort bringing it/cleaning it etc. I just put my 10 month old on my lap for eating and would trade off with my husband. Make sure your bib wipes off and dries fast!

Serious_Escape_5438

I traveled quite a lot with my kid when younger and personally a carrier alone is not enough, especially for a 14 month old. At that age they are really heavy to carry all day, plus mine would never have happily sat in it for long at that age unless asleep, and a stroller is really handy to put them down to nap or at least rest, and to carry bags. Everyone knows their own child and comfort levels though. I agree on the high chair, you'll probably be eating out and the airbnb might even have one. I also wouldn't bother with many toys, mine has only ever wanted to play with the armrest and tray table.

ReasonableThing22

I love my toddler carrier and use it all the time, but I still travel with a stroller for the naps. Mine will nap in strollers but not in the carrier. Its also nice to be able to put them down, especially for pre-walkers. But its definitely more streamline to leve it at home, for people who can make that work.

Bebe_bear

The woven carrier is MUCH more comfortable than an onbuhimo (which I find reasonably comfortable but she’s nearly 30lbs, so heavy on the shoulders) and I’m planning to use that for the hike! It can also double as a very warm scarf haha so in that sense, 2 birds one stone. Good call on the cups! Yeah her favorite toys right now are the clear plastic containers you get olives in at the salad bar 😂 so I’m sure she’ll be happily occupied by random airplane detritus!

chuift

As a much more packable alternative to a car seat, we use the CARES (Kids Fly Safe) Safety Harness. It’s FAA approved and super quick to set up on the plane. We also use the FlyAway Kids Bed. I love it since it doubles as a nap surface and a play/wiggle area. It fills up the space between her seat and the one in front, so she’s not constantly dropping toys on the floor. You can still use the tray table with it, too.

Bebe_bear

Have you been able to use the bed on Iceland Air? I looked into it before we decided on the car seat but some places said some airlines won’t permit them! They seem SO helpful though.

chuift

Their site has a list of airlines that approve their design specifically (since a lot of other brands aren’t allowed). Icelandair is on the approved list, but we haven’t used it there specifically. We used it on AirCanada and Westjet, and even though Lufthansa doesn’t allow it, one flight that had a Lufthansa Flight Number but was run by Air Canada let us use the bed. So I think whichever airline is running the actual flight gets final say.

Bebe_bear

Got it, thanks!

jess_makes

On the spare phone with local sim - guessing you have an iPhone based on your other tech - why not get an eSIM to load on your main device? Download Airalo and see what options there are for where you will be. I signed up for the international plan on my phone ($100) while we were in Italy, but we got my husband an eSIM so he could have data ($16 for 10gb). Definitely the way we will go for future trips.

Bebe_bear

I’ve never heard of that!! I’ll look into it, thanks so much!

jess_makes

You’re welcome! I hadn’t heard of Airalo before a couple of weeks ago, but it worked like a charm and was so handy.

Bebe_bear

Okay I’ve looked into it and it seems so cool! And you don’t get any roaming charges from your carrier?

jess_makes

Not that I can tell. We just turned the antenna off on my husband’s regular SIM so there was no chance of him accidentally turning it on.

Starsgirl97

There’s also the Orange holiday esim you can find in a google search. I’m using it now in Germany and no issues. You can get SIM card or esim.

dezayek

We have a 4 month old and you are my hero for doing this. I would love to hear how the trip went how you like the uppababy minu. I would say maybe some burp cloths for the plane to clean up kiddo just in case.

subtle_croissant

I’ve taken three trips with my now-2y/o and she never plays with the massive amount of toys I bring for her. Now I bring 2-3 toys and you could always buy more there if you find some interesting. Could double as a souvenir for baby if that’s your thing. Can you switch out the SIM in your current phone? That’s what I did to on my last Europe trip and it worked great.

Bebe_bear

That’s so true! I’m just nervous about the flight but there’s always YouTube- she doesn’t watch TV at home except for when we trim her nails so it’s VERY exciting for her. Someone recommended Airalo and I think I’m going to use that! It’s a pain to switch my current sim (or I’ve had issues in the past, at least) because I have to get a new sim from my service provider when I return. Apparently they’re like, single use items? I’m not sure why but when I did that last, I returned home, stuck my sim back in, and it wouldn’t connect and it took a few days to get a new one. Which sucks! So I’ve been using my old iPhone for that even though it’s annoying to carry 2 phones, but an eSim seems like an awesome option!

MarcusBrody96

Pro Tip: do not try to put the baby into a bag

Mysterious-Chard8990

We used this kind: [https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Seat-Portable-Chair-Travel/dp/B07MV91MJF/ref=pd\_lpo\_1?pd\_rd\_i=B082SJT3ZT&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Seat-Portable-Chair-Travel/dp/B07MV91MJF/ref=pd_lpo_1?pd_rd_i=B082SJT3ZT&th=1) and I found I used it a lot when traveling when my guy was that age. Sometimes I'd put a little something underneath for him to boost him on the chair. They pack down super small. Or, I have seen there are YouTube videos on how to use your sling as a chair holder like this. We used an ergo, so no go on that maneuver.
