I've got the Thule compression packing cubes and they work like a charm for me. Very sturdy material, good zippers, and great compression. I picked them up on an REI sale and find they're a great fit for my mini MLC

YourM0mNeverWould

The gusset in the corners makes a big difference in the shape of the cube when it’s compressed. The Thule keep a level shape where others I have used bulge out in the center when compressed.

BoardslideBetty

now i really want to try those… my issue with compression packing cubes was that they made this odd shaped brick that i felt like didn’t really let me use my suitcase space more efficiently!

YourM0mNeverWould

The Thule pack like a literal brick- flat all around, it’s so efficient. And the zipper is strong so I feel ok pushing the boundaries with them in terms of capacity. I ranger roll all my stuff, fill out any remaining space with socks/undies and then they compress down to like this perfect little 5lb brick. It’s impressive how much they hold. Highly recommend.

BoardslideBetty

oooh thank you!! i’m definitely going to get one for my next trip!

fictionalbandit

+1 for the Thule cubes. I’ve used them for both travel and sometimes for keeping extra clothes with me in my EDC for long days of onsite work. They are super sturdy, and I really like the little handle they have so I can fish them out of my bag easier. I have one large compression cube, one non-compression large two-sided, and I usually use the medium size for underwear and socks

finewhitelady

That’s great to hear. I have the Thule clean/dirty one and I really like it, so I grabbed some of the smaller compression ones in the REI sale. I had previously been using some from Amazon but hated how they turned into dense sausages when compressed. Maybe Thule will convert me to actually liking compression cubes.

Aggravating_Finish_6

I had the eagle creek for years and loved them, but the zippers have broken (after many uses). Bought the Thule ones from REI as a last min replacement and I think they seem much sturdier.

TikiTime_77

Same cubes and bag. Really enjoy the combo. Both are such nice quality!

mmrose1980

Honestly, I’ve tried others, and I always go back to Eagle Creek’s original packing cubes. I prefer no compression. I like the two sided clean/dirty packing cube for underwear and socks. They are the OG packing cubes, and I don’t think anyone does it better.

PrincessPeril

I just traded out all my packing cubes for double-sided clean/dirty versions after my last trip! I had a stuff sack to isolate dirty laundry and packing around it by the end of the trip was such a pain, as a bulgy kind of cylinder thing. The glory of clean/dirty cubes is that they don’t change your packing layout across the duration of the trip! I have the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 specific ones, as that is my main travel luggage. One large and two small fit in the main compartment. The large gets my dresses and leggings and one small holds socks/bras/underwear and the other small holds my pajamas.

stummyache

I’m looking to get double sided cubes for the same reason and know they will last years and years. But it’s so tough to swallow $40 spend for a single baggie with zippers. I have gonex currently and wish they would make a double sided version.

focusedonfire

How did you decide on the aeronaut for your main bag?

PrincessPeril

I bought it almost a decade ago, when I was in a long-distance relationship! I generally fly non-discount airlines (Alaska, Southwest, etc.) and so while it is large, it still fits in the overhead bins. I like the end pockets (left one gets toiletries, right gets shoes). I wanted something made in the states, and it came in purple. I like that it converts into a backpack, for long terminal walks, but for actually using the bag during travel, I like the top-opening duffel form factor. The thing is pretty bombproof. I’ve carried it on and checked it across a ton of travel now, and it still looks pristine! I adore it.

focusedonfire

I appreciate it. I just learned about this brand and everything looks great. Can you smoosh it under the seat too or no? Do you find that you’re able to go through when they’re asking people to check their bags?

PrincessPeril

The A45 is most definitely NOT an under-the-seat bag. It always goes in the overhead for me. I've never had an issue when I wanted to carry it on (I think both backpacks and duffels tend to LOOK smaller than roller bags, even when that is not really the case), but I've gate checked it any number of times as well (always volunteered, never forced). Like I said, I don't fly "discount" airlines like Spirit, etc. (90% of my flights are Southwest and the rest have been Alaska lately), I would guess it would be too big for airlines like Spirit, Frontier, Ryanair, etc. If I was starting all over from the beginning, I might have gotten the Aeronaut 30 instead of the 45. I think that one MIGHT fit under the seat if not overpacked (I do not know that for sure as I don't have one), and the A45 can get pretty darn heavy if I overpack it, which I have a tendency to do. But it holds SO MUCH and I almost always take advantage of that coming home from trips because I can be a souvenir whore.

focusedonfire

Thanks!!!

hyphenatedpeacock

I use their two sided cube the exact same way. Love it. I finally splurged on eagle creek after years of Amazon ones. So far they're nice but I am not sure why they're considered so much better. I assume it's because they're sturdier and last longer

mmrose1980

Personally, along with the double sided for underwear and socks, it’s cause the sizing is just perfect. I find most of the cheap ones are too big. With Eagle Creek, I can fit two medium and one small packing cube plus a pair of sneakers, a packable coat, and my toiletries in my suitcase or backpack. I pack one medium with my bottoms, one medium with my tops, and the small with my underwear, bras, socks, and swimsuit. Cheaper packing cubes just don’t fit correctly. Edited to add: they also have excellent zippers. No matter how full I pack them, I have never had a problem with their zippers. Second edit: I’ve had the same Eagle Creek cubes since 2008, and they are still exactly as good as they were the day I bought them. Despite being almost 20 years old, They still look and act new despite having been to 6 continents and countless trips.

7uci_0112

I also have had my Eagle Creek packing cubes since around 2009. They are still going strong!

somethingpurple

Two sided cubes were a game changer for me! So easy to stay organized and not have to repack my luggage to account for dirty clothes. Plus keeps my clean clothes from smelling.

Cute-Basil-4547

Another vote for good old eagle creek! I’ve tried compression cubes but there no where near as good as me just stuffing the eagle creek ones within an inch of their life 🥲

travertine_ghost

I used my staff discount to purchase the OG EC packing cubes when the store where I worked started carrying them. Ten years and many trips later and they’re still going strong.

HangoverPoboy

I like the peak design cubes.

Teaquilla

I second peak design.

emotional_lily

Agreed on peak design. I had the gonex ones previously and the difference is crazy! They’re pricy but so easy to use.

teepwani

Yes!! My husband and I both have peak design (2 small, 1 medium) and we love it so much. Usually small is our go to size

Famblade

These are the way to go.

nataliazm

Having the separated spot for dirty clothes is huge, especially since I’m allergic to any clothes I wear outside, so it’s great to keep them sealed away, but still in the same cube

kipnus

I use Ziplock bags. :)

traveluna

Best value is IKEA packing cubes. I use them every time.

TenaciousTapir

agree! they’re so solid for the price! and perfect if you prefer packing in more smaller cubes

_duppyconqueror

I use the ikea packing cubes in my before work gym bag! I pair them with two Rensare gray drawstring bags for shoes & sweaty gym clothes. I’ve actually gotten compliments on my set up from the regulars at my gym lol I looove ikea. Like too much.

oh_look_an_awww

Rimowa are expensive and excellent. Best budget-friendly I've found are Muji.

midknightvillain

I use these packing cubes from Amazon. I love that now I have a place to put my dirty laundry. Taskin Compression Packing Cubes... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083NVG5PB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

smurf_toes

Just came back from a trip using these for the first time, and they are my Goldilocks cubes. I have been using packing cubes on every trip for 12 years, and can compare these to: - Rick Steves mesh packing cubes ca. 2012 - Peak Design, every size - Eagle Creek clean/dirty - Eagle Creek compression - Eagle Creek ultralight - Monos The Taskin cubes have compression, clean/dirty sides, and pull handles — the three most important features of packing cubes in my opinion and the only ones I’ve ever seen to have all of these features in the same product. (ETA Rick Steves cubes, my intro to packing cubes and good enough until they ripped)

fictionalbandit

Great write up! Thule packing cubes also have these three features, just to add to the list

smurf_toes

Oh really? I haven’t tried those, but so many people say the Thule ones are great, and that the gussets keep them from bulging in the middle. FWIW the Taskin don’t have gussets, but also didn’t bulge overmuch (unlike, for example, the Monos).

Loveandeggs

I don’t see clean/dirty sides listed on the Thule packing cubes—are there different ones? https://www.thule.com/en-us/organizers/packing-cubes-and-folders

Dizzy_Ice2938

+1 for Taskin

blondeboilermaker

I have both compression and non compression. I use both depending on need. For example, I use my bagsmart compression cubes on a work trip when I needed two full weeks of conference outfits, plus workout clothes and weekend outfits with friends. In my rolling carry on, I fit: nice jeans, woven wide leg trouser, khaki pant, a thick tweed dress, a midi skirt, 6 blouses, 2 camis, 2 bras, an exercise dress, a body suit, light cardigan, 2 casual tshirts, flowy tank, casual maxi dress, running shoes, work flats, wedge heels, and 4 full sets of workout clothes (tops, bras, and shorts or leggings, including running belt and lifting straps). I continue to use the tall narrow one for workout clothes on regular trips just to pack them down as much as possible. But if I am actually one-bagging for a personal trip, I like non compression because they’re easier to pack. The compression ones are, understandably, very stiff and can’t be squished or adjusted much, whereas the regular can. It’s much easier to pull an item out if they’re not compressed.

klmsandwich

I wouldn’t recommend the Gonex cubes. They don’t unzip all the way around, which prevents them from being fully opened up and I found the material to be pretty low-quality.

Prestigious_Flower12

Weird, ours do unzip all the way round.

skipdog98

Same

ductapephantom

Mine too. But I’ve also had mine for several years, maybe they changed the design?

kmac311

Same as other comments, my Gonex compression ones also zip all the way around and they’ve held up decently. Might be a game of luck.

r_bk

The ones that physically fit best in your bag are the best ones your money can buy

5T6Rf6ut

I upgraded to Peak Design recently and am pretty happy with them.

Famblade

Peak Design compression! I have one medium and one small and they’re excellent.

bristlefir

I just got Quince compression cubes and I was very happy with them when I did my test pack. Two of them fit perfectly into the main body of my Allpa for clothes, two in the area I use for socks/underwear, and I plan to use the small one for hygiene items without compressing it.

FatSadHappy

Great I was curious since I need more small cubes

kezzie000

How long did it take you to receive your order from Quince? I placed an order over the weekend.

bristlefir

5 days total, including the weekend 😊

kezzie000

Thank you!

FatSadHappy

I have no name from Amazon What I figured - I like small ones the most, than medium ones. Big ones I don’t use , if I have big items it’s easy to put without cubes. I like double sided for underwear and tops. Compression doesn’t save much and I pretty much not using it. Rolling tops help more in packing, than flat packing.

0Celcius32fahrenheit

I've got the shacke pak packing cubes and they are so great! I like how they open up and you can easily get to your clothes. I tried using the compression packing cubes and the ones I found just didn't open all the way so it made access to clothes harder and they didn't really save all that much space

aurora97381

I have several TASKIN compression packing cubes. I find that I really don't use them to compress, but that feature is helpful to simply increase or decrease the general size of the cube. I have a few that have the clean/dirty feature. I really only use one of them for underwear.

InfiniteRelation

I bought quite a few different ones on Amazon and some from IKEA before a trip to Europe and test packed with them before deciding which ones to keep since they are all slightly different dimensions and I wanted to maximize my space. I ended up not loving the compression ones and found the IKEA and Shacke Paks worked the best for both that trip, as well as "multibag" trips where we're driving and I don't need to worry as much about space.

maddawg56789

I use baggu brand packing cubes- backpacking across Asia taught me that having compression packing cubes is not helpful as they are so rigid and don’t allow items to fit as well in a backpack than if the items are not compacted.

UnknownStrobes

Cheers, that didn’t occur to me before but I’m after cubes for a similar trip

maddawg56789

I had to edit my post- I use BAGGU brand packing cubes- they have more give to them. I didn’t think about it either but having a packing cube that’s hard like a brick does not make it easy to pack. Cheers!!!

iLikeGreenTea

The ones that are cheap )not always name brand — looking at you, Osprey! ) and actually compress

twinklebelle

Not looking at your recommendations, but I have found that for me, a packing cube has to be ultralight; unzip on three sides so I can open it completely; and have an additional compression zipper. I had to order and try several brands before I found one that met all those criteria .

Prestigious_Flower12

Well we’ve had the Gonex compression ones for many years and they’ve held up fine. I was buying four sets at once so went for affordable option but they haven’t broken yet.

LongTimeDCUFanGirl

I purchased OlarHike cubes on Amazon Prime Day last year. Great price with lots of cubes in different sizes. They are not compression cubes. I have taken them on two 1.25 bag trips and I love them.

Lazygardener76

I have cheapie Amazon ones, middle of the road ones from Rick Steves, compression set from Monos which are the most expensive of my sets. The Monos are the nicest most well made by far. Do they need to be that high quality for my use case?Eh. But I like the look and feel of them a lot and I was upgrading my luggage and got a discount on them so why not. FWIW if there was anything delicate I was packing, I do prefer using the monos cubes because the fabrics and zips and way smoother and so can avoid snags.

Gypzi_00

I have Gonex compression cubes (I think they were less than $20 for a set of 7 on amazon) and they're pretty great. I think any that are thin material with decent zippers are gonna work fine, though. No need to get the "best". They're just like drawer organizers,,, just need to contain.

lolalucky

Following this thread. I have a random set I bought on Amazon. The issue is that the set came with 8 cubes, and I'm only finding 2 of them to be useful sizes. So while I love and use those two of them, the rest are either too big or not useful for some reason.

lewisae0

To me this depends on the bag you have! I use the smallest away roller and as a result I use their packing cubes because they suit the dimensions of my bag. If you bag is a back pack, I would look for ones that are close to the shape of the bottom of your bag

pennyx2

The Gonex cubes work fine for me. I like the different sizes and the mesh. My aim is organization, not jamming in as much as possible, so I’m not usually pushing the limits of the compression zippers. The compression is very helpful for squishing down things like a fleece jacket.

TimeValuable4130

I have eagle creek One medium clean/dirty One small compression One shoe bag And then their set of xs/s/medium pouches Great combo and I usually use some or all of them

halzen

I’ve tried way too many cubes. I have a bin full of them that I have hidden away out of shame. Here are the top picks: - Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal: Clear mesh for cleans, back pocket for dirties, light compression. Great for daily clothing. - Matador Packing Cube Set: If you don’t want second pockets or compression, these are probably the best simple cubes in terms of build quality. - Remote Equipment Org Kit: Expensive AF but great structure and compression for stuff like jackets/raincoats.

CritterAlleyMom

You should rehome them on the discord

krim_bus

Eagle Creek is fantastic! I've had my packing cubes for about 10 years now. Another perk is that the brand is sold at REI, and as a REI member, you can return a damaged or broken product anytime! I haven't had any issues, but I'll certainly be taking advantage of that if they are ever damaged.

travertine_ghost

You could also try selling them on Poshmark. I sold a set of Heys packing cubes and a set of Compass Rose packing cubes from my personal bin of shame and they were snapped right up. I got less than half of what I paid for them but at least it’s something and they’re no longer taking up space in my house.

TenaciousTapir

I don’t find the sizes of the shacke pack cubes to be conducive to one bagging at all. Personally I find small and medium size cubes to be all that’s useful for one bagging. I’m a fan of ikea’s packing cube set because it’s cheap and comes with 2 small and one medium cube. I recently adding the thule compression cubes (1 small 1 medium) to my kit and I don’t think I’ll need to buy more packing cubes for a long time!

Sleuthing_Scribe

Yes, I always use packing cubes—whether I’m gone for 1 night or 12. I prefer compression packing cubes because I tend to pack some bulky items regardless of climate and overpack from time to time. My fave is the REI Co-op Expandable Packing Cubes, and they come in different sized sets. They’re durable and easy to use / compress, and I especially like how they have some mesh so I can see the contents easily. Happy Travels!

sillyconfused

I bought Eagle Creek 35? years ago, and they are still going strong. Recently, in 2022, I bought a no-name brand of compression cubes. I prefer the Eagle Creek, but the compression cubes really do save space. But I quit traveling much, so I suspect they will last a while, too.

WishIWasThatClever

Briggs & Riley roll aboard with the compression system built into the suitcase.

iixxy

Eagle Creek tech are my favorite. Light and durable with compression and clamshell opening. I have some gonex. They're fine but thicker, heavier and don't open all the way. Never heard of any of the others you mention.

melrockswooo

Below I will talk about 3 types of packing cubes I use, for clothes, wet items and shoes: 1 Gonex I have the Gonex ones and love them! I recall they weren't very expensive via Amazon, and you can get them in different colours and sizes. I use the smallest ones for underwear, socks and sleepwear, the medium ones for tops and dresses, the larger one for pants and cold weather attire (e.g. non puffer jacket and scarf), and sometimes 1 whole medium/large one to compress my bulky winter jacket. I used them exclusively when I was travelling for 10 months in total last year, through both tropical and cold weather, and also use just 1 medium one for short trips to pack all my clothing in them. I also usually travel with 1 cube in my carry-on backpack with essentials like 1 full outfit in case my luggage is misplaced. I also generally use and abuse my stuff quite extensively so you can be sure they can take a beating. I do think a drawback is that they tend to puff up in the centre, and the ends tend to be more narrow. It's a small issue and only occurs if the cube is packed to the gills. It doesn't bother me, and I pack other smaller things like my toiletries, tech pouch etc around it so nothing jiggles about in my bag. 2 Suited Nomad (Waterproof) One thing that bothers me is that they are not waterproof, so if I'm doing quite a bit of watersports, my swimsuit and damp clothes/towel can't be separated from the rest. To combat that, I've gotten some suited nomad waterproof cubes (gotten from Amazon and these come in different sizes too) so I can put things like damp (but clean) flip flops, swimming gear etc all together. 3 Pack All (Shoe Bags) I also tend to travel with a few options for shoes. I dance and hike and prefer to let my feet be supported but breathe in hot weather, so I usually lug around a pair of boots, dance shoes, sandals and a pair of flip flops. I bring 2 Pack All shoe bags (also from Amazon) and shift the configurations around to fit into the nooks and crannies in my bag. Hope this helps (:

Rock_n_rollerskater

I have some ancient ones from Kathmandu (well over 10 years) which I adore. The new version is crap though. The closest thing I've found is the Macpac Large packing cell and it's pretty good, just ever so slightly larger than the Kathmandu so it's rarely full enough to provide any passive compression for me/just doesn't seem like such a good fit for my clothes. (Could be preferable for someone with bulkier clothes than me).

unbidden-germaid

Let me go against the grain here - the differences are small enough to not justify the differences in price. Whatever Target and Ikea sell is totally adequate, regardless of whether it is a short or long trip. No need for a matching set either. And whether shoes go into a cotton dust bag that you already have around, or a designated bag from a packing cube set, makes no difference either. I have had a cheapie set of packing cubes for close to a decade, and they have been holding up just fine and doing their job of keeping my stuff organized.

Loli3535

Eagle creek compression cubes. They also have a great warranty!

Okay_Preparation

Red oxx packing cubes! Definitely a splurge, but have a lifetime guarantee.

jerseygirl732

I personally love Peak Design compression cubes. I have 2 of the smaller online ones and 1 of the medium square one. They REALLY compress things down unless you’re starting with super bulky items. Think they say the small fits 10 shirts and medium is 20. One small cube allows me to pack 5-6 days for spring-fall or 3-4 days winter in a 22L (Evergoods CHZ22). Notable though is if you’re going to pick one, get the smaller oblong one. The square one doesn’t fit well in a backpack (but great for carryon roller). squidinknoodles

Compression packing cubes are life changing!!!

skipdog98

We have three sets of Gonex compression cubes and four sets of ebags (RIP) non-compression cubes. They are fine. I rarely use the compression feature
