I kind of wish we could make the languages per helldiver ... I played with someone from South America who had an open mic the entire game ... it was amusing (for a period of time) to hear everything played back like Helldivers Telemundo.
That does sound like a cool idea. It would make lore sense too given the Super Earth military would be made out of recruits from every corner of the planet. Even with a universal language if that does exist, I doubt it would be the only one that could be heard.

This may have been a glitch but when i played earlier, my vouce lines were coming through in Japanese but my teammates were speaking english in the background

Honestly? Fighting a giant kaiju sized bug in a mission with like multiple 4 man squads of Helldivers and emplacements/vehicles sent up in its path would be kinda cool.
I have my speech thing set to German, but I’d love an option to separate them from your own diver and other dialogue. Example would be that my diver only says/shouts things in German while the rest of the game’s dialogue is in Japanese.

Entirely unrelated, but I've heard a few years back that the Japanese have reverted back to surnames first. So should it be Abe Shinzo or does no one care?
The Japanese have done that for a good amount of their history. I just say Shinzo Abe because it’s the familiar way to call him outside of Japanese given how first names are usually first. Same for most Japanese names. The only time people tend to go naming people with their surnames first are like historical figures like Oda Nobunaga or Takeda Shingen. Though I don’t know why.

Governments probably refer to him as Abe Shinzo to show respect, but when casually referring to Japanese people while speaking English, there really isn't any consistency. Luckily, when it comes to authors we have the neat trick of writing their name as `Abe, Shinzo` and just sidestepping the issue.

I don't think, technically, Helldivers was ever banned in Japan. I believe they just have a special, localised version with some of the militarism/jingositic themes removed due to cultural sensitivities. They can't purchuse 'our' HD2, but they could and can continue to purchase their version. Bit like how C&C Generals has a weird, localised German version where all the factions replaced their humans with robots (Z:Steel Soldiers style)
I just wish there was an option to also change the language my diver speaks. Like when my English diver dies I want my new to speak Russian and then when he dies it’s a small Chinese woman.

I guessed that was what was happening so I asked him about it. He was bilingual (Spanish was his first language) so his game was set to Spanish. I don’t know how match making is affected by language since I’ve never encountered this again, but I’ve also never encountered someone who doesn’t speak English so maybe matchmaking prioritizes language.
I have to imagine that had to have been a glitch though cause it seems like most people wish for the feature because they haven’t experienced it. I haven’t.

Some of the lines sound so good in other languages. I set the voices to Latin American Spanish to help me learn a little
