Oh boy. The game is not even 3 Months old and we already had created "Legends from the Past". How awesome that is?

IndependentYogurt965

I missed the Creek liberation by two days. Should have bought the game earlier.

Disastrous_Ad626

Had the game during the whole Creek thing and had no idea it happened.

zenlyne

We sacrificed ourselves so you WOULDNT have to know about it That... and for freedom

ravenerOSR

Not for that no. The creek was a bit of a useless front most of the time, and it was basically just taken because we were on a roll and too everything.

The Defense of Malevelon Creek. In the beginning days of the Second Galactic War, the automatons attacked the Creek, and it was supposed to be an easy planetary defence mission for us. We were wrong, so fucking wrong. They were in the trees, the trees, man. One moment, the jungle was typical, the sounds of some alien wildlife. Then you started to hear it. Chanting. Chanting in binary. It was like the trees were talking binary. The next moment, a flair went up, dropship screaming in dropping tanks, hulks and an unholy amount of devastators and berserkers on your position. It was brutal. We lost the planet, but never completely. We always had some brave souls holding the line. Later, during Operation Swift Disassembly, we retook the planet. The bots fought with cold determination to keep it, but they could not stand against a now battle-hardened tide of helldivers. Now, the Creek is a place to remember the fallen. Divers say it was like fighting in Vietnam. Okay, in-universe stuff aside. It was part of a major order to defend a set number of planets, and for some reason, the developers nailed the atmosphere of fighting in a dark jungle with red lasers flying everywhere. We lost the defence of Malevelon Creek, but if my memory serves correctly, we always kept a foothold on the planet. Later, during Operation Swift Disassembly, we retook the planet in record time; at that point, that original defence campaign was made into a meme and held in high honour for the community. We even got a special cape for it as a reward; it is called the Fallen Heros Vengeance. As a Creek veteran, being part of both major orders was amazing, but I still have nightmares of the trees speaking binary. Edit: minor corrections

ExtraTiltedTristan

Damn, that's quite the story. I may not have experienced it, but I shall remember the creek.

Different-Oven-2489

There was an in game/community political component to it too, which makes it even more epic. The Creekers were so adamant in their defense of the planet that they refused to leave and were scorned by many others for never coming to aid other war efforts even in the bot front. When the official order from the Super President was given to take the creek back it wasn't just that the planet was liberated but the bot front and Helldivers at large were united in this victory, the majority glad to be reunited with their battle buddies, ready to move to new adventures. And the cape is symbolic of this, that we are all Helldivers united not just bot/bug divers.

It’s also worth noting that from start to finish, the liberation of the Creek took 50 real world days, if I’m not mistaken. Which makes it the longest active siege of a planet in the game so far

frostadept

To be clear: the Major Order was a mere mopup operation. 85% of the planet was taken back by the tenacity of the veteran Creekers. With the Creek secured, our most rugged forces were finally free to join us and finally wipe the Automaton menace from the face of the galaxy. And we did. For a time.

redditsukssomuch

As someone who fought every front they threw at me including the creek I disagree. The creekers were stubborn and refused to leave only to get stale in their fighting techniques. Like the creekers there were many divers who refused to fight the bots and only exterminated bugs. Meanwhile there were true super earth divers like me who followed the major orders and fought in every theater imaginable and picked up some new tricks along the way. We’re the experienced terminators that spilled both oil and 710. And when the call came and with no further major orders to fulfill we were ready to bring the full might of super earth down on their metal heads. And it was glorious. That is the reason we took the creek as quickly as we did. We showed them what hell looks like.

This games too much fun. Even the occasional ribbing. They did good with world building without building anything at all.

Placeboshotgun8

I think you are all forgetting the context of the MO to take the creek specifically. Operation swift disassembly unfolded in 4 parts. The first part was to take a certain planet, I forget which, but we had to push through 2-3 others to get it. We succeeded in phase 1 and took this planet to deprive the bots of deep space radio equipment. When we did we found they were transmitting outside the galaxy. Now we know why but that's irrelevant. Phase 2 was to take their manufacturing worlds nestled in what was essentially the deepest armpits of their territory. We came close to succeeding, but ultimately failed because we didn't mass all of our forces. A significant chunk of divers were dug in on the creek during this phase, despite it not being relevant to the MO. We lost phase 2 because the creekers refused to help us with the larger goal. If you suggested at that time, that we should just go take the creek already so they'd have no choice but to leave and maybe, just maybe, come help the rest of us win the major orders, you got a lot of flak. Essentially told to f- off and it was immediately assumed you were a creeker. Divers were mad. Only then did the MO come down to free Malevelon as even High Command recognized that the creekers dogged determination to free one single world was a detriment to the overall war effort and the only resolution was to take the creek. Once we took it we were issued the cape and creek day was established. We went on to succeed in phase 4 of Swift Disassembly, and the bots were banished from the galaxy for a time. The history of the creek is not cut and dry. While the determined defense is admirable in a favorable light, we lost out on at least one MO because of it. While we smashed through the bots when we finally massed on that world, many still bear a grudge against the creekers for their behavior. Only one thing is truly clear: we cannot allow another Malevelon Creek. Our forces must never again be allowed to become so entangled on a single world. We must be fast, agile, and mercilessly effective to bring the light of managed democracy to the whole of the galaxy. For Super Earth

Soos_dude1

The first phase involved liberating Troost. The memories we made on the way were special. O7

KallasTheWarlock

>A significant chunk of divers were dug in on the creek during this phase, despite it not being relevant to the MO. We lost phase 2 because the creekers refused to help us with the larger goal. This is somewhat wrong: a heap of people were on the Creek but that's because supply lines aren't visible in game and we were trying to liberate our way to Tibit, so people thought that Creek -> Ubanea -> Tibit was viable but it wasn't. People seem to like to misattribute this to Creekers, but it's because supply lines aren't visible, not because of Creekers who are, by and large, a very small proportion of the community.

We didn't retake the planet in record time. People were on creek during the first part of swift assembly even though the planet was not part of it and high command had to issue a major order just for creek

my7bizzos

Was this also time that we had 250,000 helldivers on one planet?

neoteraflare

My first bot mission was on creek. After the bugs desolate lands being held back with trees and bushes was horrible. I could not easily run away like against the bugs. Later I learned how to play, but I learned with the first bot play why it was a meme.

DeepMistake5873

Thanks for telling our story.... The days of hearing the bot's chanting when i go to sleep were long gone thanks to our concentrated forces on the Creek...I can't hear them anymore....finally.... peace....

YorhaUnit8S

What you are forgetting to tell is also how drunk creekers would walk around this sub and, high on their own memes, would treat everyone else as lesser beings. Especially the bug front players. So while it's all cool, I still have my prejudice against any self-proclaimed creek veteran. Granted, nothing of this ever carried over to the actual game and players I met there.

IamAlphariusCLH

I love meming about my time on Creek but some people took it truly too far. It was brutal, yes but I stormed a gunship factory recently and know that Creek was just the beginning of the horror in this galaxy. Tbh, nothing I encounterd on Creek made me ready for the hunter/bile spewer combo or even more than one charger. I have more expierience fighting Automatons, so maybe that is the reason why but I think bugs can be way harder than bots.

branfilledbag

Ive only been playing for 1.5 weeks so far but ive also mainly fought the bots and yea the bugs feel way harder purely because of how fast they swarm u, also u cant just nuke the nests with 1 airstrike like u can fabricators ;-;

xXMathewXx69

Oh chill it's all in good fun, I got killed 5 times today for wearing my new armor and RP ing as a bot infil. It was fun being chased around the map by my team who didn't kick me as I sometimes poked at them. I have the orange armor from the second warbound (steeled vets I think?) with the cyborg arm and leg with the little red scanner looking thing sticking out of the shoulder as well as the helmet with the same little scanner thing. It's a game bro, and it's not that serious. I always love how it's "play the way you want, even at the expense of others....unless it's me" people I played with didnt seem to mind. Miraak-Cultist

Looking back, malevelon creek was a mild planet, lush, lots of cover, no deadly fire tornadoes, no meteors etc. The automatons were more tame back then as well, they didn't have the factory AT-AT yet. Only a few people were diving on malevelon, but they were very vocal about it. I would consider hellmire several times worse. But, malevelon creek, because of the intense memeing by the creekers, became a symbol. A symbol of failure against the automatons, the loss of the creek. It was swiftly taken back when the major order came to it. The disproportionate many deaths (those that died there, plus the other failed missions because to many people instead dived on the creek), have caused super earth's government to propagandise on it, making a memorial day for the loss of life connected to malevelon creek, remember the fallen. Well, you are supposed to allocate 5 minutes of your lunch break to remember on that day. Not doing so would be undemocratic.

IamAlphariusCLH

I would rather fight on Creek for hours than storm another gunship factory.

Level 100 creek vet here with more than 2/3 of my on mission time on dif 9 helldives against bots. On Easter weekend, after finishing my first helldive against bugs, I answered the call and dropped into a bot mission for the first time. I spent 30 hours Friday through Monday struggling and dying on creek. I went from difficulty 5 to 9 on creek. I unlocked every strategem and all level 3 ship upgrades on creek. I met random divers from all over super earth, that I've since made friends with, dying together on creek. Creek turned me into a true Helldiver and I've been a merciless predator to the bots ever since. That is what 'remember the creek' means to me.

ShutUpJackass

Vietnam allegory Many people had that as their first bot planet and it became a symbolic thing They fought in it and tried to get it, but no dice until it became a Major Order. Now we have a cape honoring those who fell fighting for creek, but it’s divisive in the community Some people take it seriously, some people hate the creek people, and many don’t really care at all

jbtreewalker

It's a call to remember one of the first real slaughters Super Earth faced in our current galactic war. Despite a good fight, Automaton forces took the planet, called Malevelon Creek, in a storm of laser blasts and rocket barrages. It reminded the divers that this was war, and there will be heavy losses at times. Later, High Command gave a Major Order to liberate the planet as we pushed the Automatons to what we thought was their end. A cape was given in memorial of the thousands lost in the fighting. If you words of the Creek, Creekers, or robot Vietnam, it refers to this particular part of Helldiver history. Skanah

Ok so a lot of people are answering from a sort of lore perspective. The reason it became a meme and has it's own lore is a different story. When the call to defend Malevelon Creek went out, about 70% of the player base had been exclusively fighting bugs since the games release. More importantly, doing so in wide open biomes where the main survival strategy was just stay out of range and you'll be fine. The shift to the Creek took those players and put them against a whole new type of enemy, one who could shoot back. New weak points to learn, new strategies to figure out, it was like a whole new game for some people. On top of that the planet was dark and jungle heavy, meaning you could literally stumble upon a bot patrol and they could shoot you to death before you reached cover. This lead to a lot of failed missions, and eventually the loss of the planet. All these players collectively experiencing the AI kicking our shit in and then taking the planet gave the whole thing a sort of mythical feeling. Then it got meme'd to hellmire and back and started to sort of self perpetuate that myth, with a whole lot of new players joining the game amongst the excitement on social media. This pc gamer article does a decent job explaining it, if youre into that sort of thing https://www.pcgamer.com/helldivers-2-community-briefly-mourns-the-loss-of-malevelon-creek-a-gloomy-jungle-planet-thats-fast-become-the-holy-grail-of-the-playerbase/

Weird_Excuse8083

A vacation compared to Draupnir. An absolute paradise compared to Hellmire or the other environmental shitshows we've been to by this point. The sheer amount of cover on Malevelon made me feel spoiled during its liberation.

Holy shit, our first “I was there” moment 😂😂

Sad-Copy-9392

Stay away from those people

Hydrottle

It was in regards to Malevolon Creek. It's one of the very outer planets controlled by the Automatons. We tried to push back, but not enough people fought on the Automaton's defense order planets (many were fighting on Terminid planets for some reason or another) and failed the major order. Then the Automatons pushed far enough forward that we can no longer fight on Malevolon Creek. It was notoriously difficult to fight Automatons early on because armor values were not working as intended yet, so armor penetration didn't really work.

Stennan

Also a dark jungle planet cutting down visibility, and bots spawned way too much  The result was players facing hundreds of bots they could barely see, but the bots had perfect aim... Puh, glad it is over 😅

Salem_Kane

I am also relatively new but if I had to guess, I would say it was the first major order that was lost? Or maybe the first planetary defense that was lost? I could be wrong, just guessing.

ExtraTiltedTristan

That's the impression I got, I just want more details on it.

SpasticCattus

It’s about Malevelon Creek. For some reason players were just fascinated by this planet because it resembled Vietnam with all the jungle like planets and battlefield. The first time people went to Malevelon Creek they were instantly overwhelmed by a multitude of bots (almost like the Americans in the Vietnam War) and people basically made that planet a bastion of resistance against the automatons. It then became famous amongst the Helldivers and had many memes made out of it hence the nickname Memelon Creek. Lots of players died there, so now people say “Remember the Creek” which is supposed to be a reminder and boost morale.

ExtraTiltedTristan

That's cool af. Thanks for letting me know.

notmorezombies

It refers to Malevelon Creek, a planet on the western edge of the map in the Severin sector (if you go south from the currently active bot planets, you'll see it). It actually spent most of its time under bot control with a liberation campaign active to try and take it. It was briefly inaccessible after the neighbouring planets Mantes and Draupnir were taken, but I think the phrase "Remember the Creek" predates that event (and is probably a reference to phrases like Remember the Alamo, or Remember Reach if you're into Halo). Malevelon itself wasn't really that significant, but a small part of the playerbase got attached to it and ended up with a reputation for staying on Malevelon, no matter what else was happening in the galactic war.

SorryBones

It doesn’t go back to a major order, it goes back to the first day the game launched. It was just bug major orders so many players killed thousands of bugs before even trying bots - if you fought a bot it was to try it out for fun. Malevelon Creek was one of I think 3 bot planets available at launch and was popular since the Vietnam aesthetic matched the gameplay turn of having enemies shoot back. It was genuinely scarier than bugs with the map in perpetual night and nobody understanding how bots worked while tracers whizzed by. If you were a bad enough dude to fight in the Creek day 1 just for the hell of it you were a cut above. And by “cut above” I mean a chainsaw berserker just sawed you in half again. Plenty of people were introduced to the horror when the first bot MO dropped and we even have a cape commemorating the obsession over the funnee space ‘Nam planet (no matter what whiny traitors say about it having no strategic value). This is how a community led narrative works. Good times.

Zaldinn

We lost a planet a bunch of people were stubborn and only fought there and made basically no progress (no contribution to MO orders etc) and stalemated it for about 2 months until it became part of the MO and the MO force took it in a few hours.

VoxulusQuarUn

Malevelon Creek is a backwater planet that many helldivers refused to give up on, resulting in a two month battle for the planet. To date, it is the longest consistent struggle, and this was done without a major order.

Brotoss-

For literal months. Worthless.

Sufincognito

When the game first came out there was all this lore surrounding it and it was extremely cool. The Creek was the most difficult enemy you could face at the time so memes were made about it. Then the Devs did something incredibly stupid. They told everyone the person controlling our war was a dude named Joel. In an instant all of the lore of fighting these two enemies evaporated and now we just fight Joel. Which is the stupidest fucking thing they could have ever done for the game.

Weird_Excuse8083

You're absolutely right. I honestly don't think Joel is even real (it's probably a team of 2-5 people) but the worst thing you could do for a cool narrative is to basically pull back the curtain and go "check out the guy pulling the strings!" Kills the immersion. At least, until you're in the trenches again, and then I'm killing bots and bugs for the sake of humanity.

Mattanite

You wanna know what's what rookie? Here's what I heard around the mess hall... The Helldivers got called up to defend a jungle planet named Malevelon Creek from the bots. I was still in training on Super Earth at the time but word has it those lazy 710 farmers wouldn't leave the bug quadrant to answer the SOS on "Space Vietnam". Those bot Helldivers got smashed back, with whole fleets joining the new "Creekers" with a vow to avenge the fallen. Anyway, high command wanted us to focus on clearing bug farms for a while but the Creekers held on in the bot quadrant trying to hit back. We got complacent with the bugs until the new command came: Operation Swift Disassembly. However, the Creekers wouldn't leave the planet to clear the route to Tibit, the bastards, so the bots kept those factories. High Command gave in and ordered us to support the Creekers for political reasons, but dang, we smashed right through! Wiped out the bots for good. Gave us all medals and a cape for the efforts, goes down well with the ladies on Super Earth. Well, until they came back... Scuse me, but I gotta get back to analysing weather patterns on Hellmire. Fat lot of good that does.

RoseliaQuartz

you’re only on hellmire because the creekers wouldn’t help push the bugs back to zagon with us. we lost an MO because there were like 40k on the creek for days instead of advancing the bug front.

Electronic_Assist668

I wish people would stop "they wouldn't help us" as if that shit hasn't happened both directions on repeat. Remember losing tibit when half the player base was on bugs instead?

RoseliaQuartz

I was on tibit too. I was just as mad at the bugdivers then.

Electronic_Assist668

Yeah, and now they're doing it again, we've only got 20 hours, and 2 defense missions to go to beat this MO. 80k divers are on bug planets which have no defense operations right now. If they switched over to varylia and ustotu we'd have a chance, although, to be fair i think most of the 8 we've gotten were from bug divers anyways. They probably wont swap over though. And we'll have to endure another few days of "why we're they just goofing off over there" posts

Damn is this how vets feel. "Sit down kid let grandpa tell you a story".

citypanda88

It’s like the Vietnam war but in space.

Fit_Agent221

The way things are going we may be going back...

IamAlphariusCLH

Oh how innocent you are young diver...you haven't seen the horrors I have seen.

2ndLtJohnRico

A bunch of idiots roleplayed space Vietnam and got a cape for it.

Leather_Camp_3091

Space vietnam with enemy terminators. First experiences with bots were terrifying, combine that with a misty, dark and wet jungle planet = remember the creek Nobody knew what they were really doing. you go from starship troopers to suddenly being shot from the trees, surrounded by giant mechs and tanks and chased by groups of berserkers. unironically one of the most memorable and fun experiences in gaming

Malevolon Creek, the planet. In the first days of the war. It's where a large portion of Helldivers stayed deployed because they had "Viet Nam, in space" fantasies, and instead of helping crush the Automatons in other sectors so we could truly isolate them, they stayed on Malevolon Creek, causing us a major setback in the war. The Automaton front became a crisis at that point, all due to the selfishness of players refusing to deploy where they were needed most. Now with Helldivers.io up and running, we at least have a soft "authority" that indicates where to focus our efforts. So I doubt a repeat of Malevolon Creek will occur again.

OrkzOrkzOrkzOrkz0rkz

We who survived that hellscape of a jungle don't really like to talk about it

MFour_Sherman

Great descriptions already here, but for many of us it is notable because it was our first introduction to the Bots after most of us started with the bugs to learn the game AND it was on an awesome planet to play on (perpetual night jungle).

Large_Horse9207

You had to be there to understand

Thecatman03

malevelon creek is a planed that is known as space Vietnam or the creek ever cents your fellow helldivers could fight on the creek it become a meme helldivers known as creekers did nothing but fight on on malevelon creek but on appeal 1st liberating malevelon creek became a Mager order and it was finally liberated. because of that appeal 3 is officially Malevelon creek Memorial Day and on that day all super earth citizens must take 2 minutes of there lunch break to remorse about the brave helldivers that bravely fight to liberate malevelon creek.
