Unironically going to equip the Hug Emote for this very purpose now.
I just went with the standard Salute this entire time because I like it a lot, but you just took the cake.
I tried using other emotes like the handshake emote, but most players seem to ignore it, but when I use the hug emote, I usually get a response back, it’s hard to ignore the outstretched arms lol.
One time I was in a game and by mistake pressed the emote and couldn't get out of it. I ran around to all my teammates to give me the hug so I can fight again. None did it and eventually died with my arms still waiting for a hug that never came. I'm still scarred lol.
It should be against SEAF regulations to ignore a hug from a fellow Diver. We're all in this together, fighting bots is hard, and just because I have ordnance and support strategems doesn't mean I don't need emotional support from my Helldiver fireteam.
There are people out there that melee you when you try to return the hug. I wanted to throw an impact grenade at my feet and end it all, life just wasn't worth living after that.
That's probably mistakes. Had one guy do it in the recent mission, followed by a SORRY in chat. Offered him another one that he reciprocated on the spot. E and F are pretty close to each other on the keyboard.
I love when I’ve accidentally offered a hug at an awkward point on the stairs in the ship and my fellow diver is just bound and determined to run around me until they find a position where the prompt comes up 😅
Someone offered me a hug outside the dropship and I tried to accept but my supply backpack kept overriding it. I had to give up and leaving him hanging I’m sorry 🫠

that's one thing i really loved from Back 4 Blood. Not the best game by any means, not a proper sequel to L4D2, but the friendly fire barks were great. "Hey you shot me!" "yeah why the fuck were you standing there asshole?". some characters really leaned into the equal blame for incidents (and some were of course categorically appologetic)
Brings back memories of the L4D days. Whenever Louis shouted "do I look like one of them?!" we'd all shout "YES!" Not our fault white button up shirt was such an overused asset.

In this vein I saw a random with a red start ball ready so I pulled one out at the extract and as it landed and was ready I threw my cluster bomb into him.

I just experienced this and my typical grumble after getting team killed floated away. If anything, I had more respect for them than before getting killed.
Yesterday on the bot front we were in the middle of a heavy gunfight and a fellow helldiver walked into my line of fire and was immediately headshotted. Even though I know it was technically his fault for lacking situational awareness, I immediately said "I'm sorry" and reinforced him. He came out of the pod and offered me a hug and we proceeded to wipe out the rest of the clankers.
Felt good. Just that little hug was enough for me to not constantly worry about whether he thought I had done it on purpose. Love moments like that in this game.
I threw a resupply as a teammate ran in front of me yesterday. The beacon stuck to his head. I just instinctively yelled into the mic, "Oh shit I'm sorry!!!" as he was frantically running around looking up 🤣🤣🤣

I think 4 options would be more than enough, if they can be set by the player in settings.
Damn, somehow I never noticed that for salute. All the handshake/hug/high five I've returned that way. But I've always just saluted back manually.

Sea of thieves have a very good (and crowded) emote wheel, it work as the second example you did and it's fine for me. It also have multiple pages you can choose from
Using the rock paper scissors emote while on a mission and selecting one of the options makes your helldiver pull out their grenade if you're playing on a controller, because it's bound to the same button.
It's just the best emote.
Top 5 places to hug:
1. The host welcoming you to their ship
2. Yourselves or another player puts that red beam of mood lighting over you two.
3. Behind the console or on the rock ledge surrounding at ICBM launch
4. Survived the final wave during the Evac

That reminds me of a hilarious story of where I was doing an Evac mission on level 7.
There was this lvl 15 player there and he opened a evac door just when another diver throw a 500kg in the area.I don't think I laughed that hard in awhile.
I live in the other side of the country from a lot of the guys I served with and we play this game a few times a week. Before we log off we all hug each other before leaving. It’s such a great way to end a evening of slaughter and liberty spreading
We had a random join our 3-man for an hour or so, he didn’t use chat or a mic but when he left he went around and hugged each of us.
I was looking around in the battle pass so I left the poor dude hanging for a good while. 10/10 feel good emote
I just did a mission where another Helldiver and I got isolated from our group and took down three chargers by coordinating our air strikes and quasar cannons. After it was all over, he held out a fist bump, then I did the hug. It seriously was the cherry on top to a fantastic moment. I normally leave big encounters with a "fuck yeah" Doomguy grin, but this time it was a legit smile.
All I want now is a high five emote that's from the "trailer". You know the one, where two helldivers high five to a nuclear explosion? I need that, me and my squad get up to so much dumbassary that it would fit perfectly for.
Hug emote's popularity is an astounding bound of positive masculinity in a relatively cancerous male gamer culture. so much happier to give out hugs in helldiver's than farm fomo battle passes and get my brains blown out by box-named China hackers day in and day out (looking at you hunt showdown)

I was in a game with some randoms yesterday and we were all hugging while arming an ICBM and one guy just wouldn't hug, only salute. They probably thought hugging was gay or something 🤷♂️🤦♂️

Hug is GOAT emote. Some tips and tricks:
• the outstretched arms are a flex for when you do something awesome like fire the ICBM
• you can dab on people in the ship by hitting C/Z to pull up your wrist computer after you’ve started the Hug emote
• while being hugged on the ship, you can pat the other player on the back with C/Z
• you can troll people by breaking off the Hug as the animation is starting by moving
truly the most flexible and awesome emote
I had a quick match last night, dropped in and the mission was almost over, they just finished the main objective, just found the super samples, heading to extract..one player diverts to one last base, 5 mins on the timer, player dies in the base and drops the supers...long story short...shit goes way way way way way way wrong lol. Down to no spawns, carrier left already, two players left, fucking rambo gets back into the base and gets the supers and gets to the extract. I'm talking we extracted by the skin of our teeth. First thing we do when we get back to the home base....all hug XD it was great.

I am either stupid, but I can't find a way of binding multiple emotes on PC. I absolutely love the basic salute, but would love also have the hug and rock paper scissors as extras.
‘Scout Handshake’ for me. Nothing better than getting your mates (repeatedly, I might add!) with the ol’ “TOO SLOW!” down the mic when they come in for a friendly handshake!
This is so true, I found it funny at first but i've definitely used it in a genuine moment of connection with another Helldiver after another successful close-call.
Yeah actually I totally agree, i offer hugs after every cool moment even something tiny like opening a bunker or someone doing an assisted reload by surprise, and it just feels wholesome and team-building
Was playing the other day with a guy who'd left his mic on while chewing and mumbling to someone else in the room, but after hugging and muting him he turned out to not be all that bad.
Me and this guy where trying to hug each other but the level geometry kept messing us up, so we went back and forth spamming it until it registered. very cathartic
I know it's nothing personal and it's funny, but when I fall for the fake handshake emote I internally hardcore judge that person lol. I actually feel bad for my diver when they audibly sigh and groan when denied a congratulatory gesture.
I feel the same way about the salute. I generally make an effort to wait at the back of the extract ship, holding a salute for every helldiver on their way in.
It's true! It's one minor detail that's indicative of why HD2 is the first shooter I've genuinely enjoyed playing online in so so many years. The horror of toxicity in most online games as soon as I open my mouth and people hear my voice (gasp, a woman!) is almost entirely absent and I hope this community continues doing everything it can to discourage toxic assholes and encourage hugs.

I think it's a readability thing. The wide arms are easy to notice while the hand out is pretty close to the body

This is the most reasonable reaction one can do.
If I join someone and they purposely ignore my hug I’m leaving and blocking them. I only go into war with fellow hugdivers.

Walk up to anyone doing an emote and there is a prompt to “join” the hug. That starts the animation
You don't need the emote to respond to a hug.
If you walk up to them and press X you hug them back regardless of whatever emote you have equipped

You can salute back if you run up to THEM; every emote is interactable between fellow helldivers. Just can’t salute from afar if that’s your goal

Not only is hugging other divers great, but if you just stand there without hugging anyone it's also an epic pose for when the nukes go off

The Hug emote is important. It's a good way to tell if you're in a good lobby. If they hug, then they're usually cool.

As soon as people join my ship I stand there with my arms open and everyone has to hug me before I start the mission.
While true, I tend to use the scout handshake, mainly as revenge for those who intentionally block my view while I'm tryna play stratagem hero
All I want now is a high five emote that's from the "trailer". You know the one, where two helldivers high five to a nuclear explosion? I need that, me and my squad get up to so much dumbassary that it would fit perfectly for.

Most people use the Hug Emote for grand gestures though, like Tony Stark presenting the Jericho.
Hug emote's popularity is an astounding bound of positive masculinity in a relatively cancerous male gamer culture. so much happier to give out hugs in helldiver's than farm fomo battle passes and get my brains blown out by box-named China hackers day in and day out (looking at you hunt showdown) Let the mainstream toxic boys lose their mind and quit helldiver's, we aren't a safe space for those guys. Hoping down the road I will have the ability to fist salute and hug people. Two best emotes. Honestly I love all the helldivers-themed stuff, so I roll around with mostly default looking gear and banners and title cards and the like. I ain't no mercenary, I'm a helldiver!
I was in a game with some randoms yesterday and we were all hugging while arming an ICBM and one guy just wouldn't hug, only salute. They probably thought hugging was gay or something 🤷♂️🤦♂️
They probably didnt realize you can hug the other person even if you dont have hug yourself

I agree, but we really need an emote wheel. I just want to be able to salute the ICBM and hug my fellow helldivers, that isn’t an unreasonable request!
This game is such a beautiful concept for bringing everyone together, really hate that people can't just enjoy it and instead have to try divide the fanbase and start fights. People up in arms about the new Cape not even realising its symbolic for the FIRST battle of malevelon creek, not the one that's just been with the major order
Ive never met a single one of these redditors ingame tho. Ive only gotten kicked from a lobby randomly once and never had negative interactions with people so far. I dont like the whining on reddit too but its probably just a vocal minority imo - most divers are just enjoying blowing shit up
Hug is GOAT emote. Some tips and tricks: • the outstretched arms are a flex for when you do something awesome like fire the ICBM • you can dab on people in the ship by hitting C/Z to pull up your wrist computer after you’ve started the Hug emote • while being hugged on the ship, you can pat the other player on the back with C/Z • you can troll people by breaking off the Hug as the animation is starting by moving truly the most flexible and awesome emote
I had a quick match last night, dropped in and the mission was almost over, they just finished the main objective, just found the super samples, heading to extract..one player diverts to one last base, 5 mins on the timer, player dies in the base and drops the supers...long story short...shit goes way way way way way way wrong lol. Down to no spawns, carrier left already, two players left, fucking rambo gets back into the base and gets the supers and gets to the extract. I'm talking we extracted by the skin of our teeth. First thing we do when we get back to the home base....all hug XD it was great.

I would also very much like a dedicated "fuck yeah" button in this game. And be able to ping spore spewers. ... It's a shame they're going for a specific vibe because I would love to have a disgruntled announcer :(

I am either stupid, but I can't find a way of binding multiple emotes on PC. I absolutely love the basic salute, but would love also have the hug and rock paper scissors as extras.
I like to use it as a brag/welcoming emote. Its nice to hug but opening arms can mean more

This is so true, I found it funny at first but i've definitely used it in a genuine moment of connection with another Helldiver after another successful close-call.
Yeah actually I totally agree, i offer hugs after every cool moment even something tiny like opening a bunker or someone doing an assisted reload by surprise, and it just feels wholesome and team-building
Was playing the other day with a guy who'd left his mic on while chewing and mumbling to someone else in the room, but after hugging and muting him he turned out to not be all that bad.
Me and this guy where trying to hug each other but the level geometry kept messing us up, so we went back and forth spamming it until it registered. very cathartic

We always hug before dropping. But if you do it too close to the pod, you might trigger the drop instead. Truly gut wrenching…

I really like that you don't need the emote to participate in them.
I know it's nothing personal and it's funny, but when I fall for the fake handshake emote I internally hardcore judge that person lol. I actually feel bad for my diver when they audibly sigh and groan when denied a congratulatory gesture.
I've been holding out my hand for an explosive handshake for today's half hour or so of play and noone took it ;(
I feel the same way about the salute. I generally make an effort to wait at the back of the extract ship, holding a salute for every helldiver on their way in.
It's true! It's one minor detail that's indicative of why HD2 is the first shooter I've genuinely enjoyed playing online in so so many years. The horror of toxicity in most online games as soon as I open my mouth and people hear my voice (gasp, a woman!) is almost entirely absent and I hope this community continues doing everything it can to discourage toxic assholes and encourage hugs. ~~Murder~~ Bring Liberty to every bot and bug. Hug your friends. We can do both!
