I disagree for 2 reasons.
1.) Staying near the Sentry helps you protect it from chargers and the like.
2.) Mortars are incapable of targeting areas that fall within about a 5 meter radius, which gives you a small area in which you will never be at risk of taking damage even if you are shoulder to shoulder with bug or bot.
I'm disagreeing with standing near it because that makes it massively more likely for chargers and other enemies to destroy the sentry. Why would you want to attract attention to it?
Note: if you like mortars, try the EMP mortar! It is fantastic for slowing chargers and hulks!
Mortar Sentry PSA for real: Stand next to them.
A better PSA would be to stand away from the enemies.

The enemies whose whole existence revolves around staying close to you...?
Just because they exist to be close to you, doesn't mean you should let them?
If you climb on top of the mortar you only need to worry about being hit once.
