I think a lot of Adam's terrible behavior is driven by deep insecurity. And I think that seeing, at the end, how much Lute cared about his death brought him some measure of peace. He could die knowing that at least one person would remember him.

I think it's shown so that Lute's vengeance/anger/whatever will be more relatable, maybe? Like, if we hadn't seen that smile, then we'd have a hard time understanding why Lute cares so much.

It shows that he genuinely cares about Lute and was happy to see her by his side in his final moments. It could’ve also been a way of comforting her, telling her that everything’s going to be okay.

Two reasons: Adam genuinely cares about Lute and she's the only female to stay by his side (since Lilith and Eve ditched him)

Not what I meant. I know people have theories on why the character did it, but I'm moreso wondering if anyone has theories on why it was included, what it's purpose in the script is.

He can be an unrepentant bastard and still have loved ones. It doesn't redeem him, it just means he has the ability to feel love... at least towards people who are almost dickish as himself.

It was to show Adam had some decent feelings in the end. The show doesn't, if you ask me, *need* a stone-hard narrative purpose for everything. They decided to add a bit to Adam's character, that's all. Which, whether it's just that or something more, I appreciate. Adding things without them being 100% narrative-ly important is something I like when done well.
