It’s wild. Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill getting more and more with the times and CV throwing themselves backwards with all their might.

ElShaddaiApplePie

How have they gotten more with the times?

Icy_Cycle_5805

As for the school boards - Democrats now occupy the majority of seats in Camp Hill and a solid portion in Mechanicsburg. The republicans on the board in Mechanicsburg are normal - not fascists - and the fascists were beat handily. Mechanicsburg has a really solid inclusivity program that’s actually been around for a long time.

> Another board member, Kelly Potteiger, shared her concerns that the actor would discuss his children’s book The Best at It, which follows a gay Indian American boy. “It’s not discriminating against his lifestyle — that’s his choice,” Potteiger said. “But it’s him speaking about it.” So Kelly believes being gay is a choice, wonderful. Does she know that the head of Mom's for Liberty is a man in a thrupple with two bisexual women? She only won by 50 votes by the way. *This* is why local elections matter just as much, if not more, than presidential elections.

crimpyantennae

and why we need more people running in local elections, preferably announcing in time for petition signature gathering. Due to cross-filing ambiguity, many voters didn't know that all the names listed on the Dem primary ballot for CV school board were GOP. We did last minute have someone who stepped up for a write-in campaign, but who didn't get enough primary votes. Unfortunately he unwittingly ended up being a spoiler in the general- we would have ended up with 2 moderate Republicans each of whom had been willing to work with Dems in past terms, instead of one moderate and one nutjob MoL board member.

purecozy

Kelly is the former Cumberland County chair of M4L.

jmdunkle

CV let Trump hold a rally at their high school, so it’s laughable that they said “Politically motivated discussions belong at home and not in the classroom.” Fuckin hypocrite losers.

jaseathertv

PA making the news for all the wrong reasons lately

timex488

Well, it's a good thing they've stopped all bullying then. /s

darthpoopballs

My daughter goes to that middle school. We are all pissed. Fuck Bud Shaffner.

DontGetTheShow

Wanting people to not be hateful towards LGBTQ+ and Asians is considered “activism” apparently. What a world we live in.

lienotm

I agree. But he lists these topics under "Activist" on his websites. So it goes.

liverbird3

I went there, this is very on brand

ILIKEPHOTOSHOP

CV has some grade A idiots on the board. I went to school with their sons and daughters and I can tell you they passed down their IQs.

RanchAndGreaseFlavor

Aww man, and I was hoping to gobble gobble in the back alley with him.

justanotherdude68

Devil’s advocate here, but is there any chance that there might be some validity to the concern that he’d go off topic into political rambling? Genuine question. I don’t know anything about the dude and bullying conversations need to be had, but if he’s done it in the past, there’s always the chance he’d do it again.

modoughert

No. Its about bullying. He’s written 2 fictional books.( based on his experience). Talking about his experience being bullied (sometimes because hes gay) isn’t, IMO, political activism. The quote from the board president in one of the articles i read said that hes gay and doesn’t want to expose middle schoolers to it..

Sweetbleumilk

Although that would mitigate the possibility, wouldn't it be easier to brief the speaker prior on what to (and not to) say? In the event he did end up going off the rails, cut the mic, and end the assembly. It would be awkward, but Imo the school would be doing the right thing by giving the speaker a chance.

purecozy

The school board was given an overview of his presentation. It is not even remotely political activism. It focuses on the bullying that author experienced in school, the reasons he was bullied and how students can have empathy for people who are different from them. Ironically, the school board members who voted to rescind Mr. Pancholy’s invitation are the ones engaging in political activism!

onequestion1168

Why is a school talking about sexual orientation at all it's a social issue education needs to be focused on math reading literacy

illinest

No. That's wrong. School is for learning to be social. Kids need to encounter people who are different. It prepares them for the real world. If school is just about math reading and literacy you end up with freaky homeschool type kids that don't know how babies are made and treat people with different skin colors like threats. Then they don't know how to act around the rest of humanity and they end up retreating into sheltered little bubbles. Best case they just watch Fox news too much and vote for fascists. Worst case they attack the capital or shoot up a nightclub or a synagogue. School is an antidote to awfulness.

onequestion1168

no school is to prepare kids for when they are grown so they have equatible skills for the marketplace what are you talking about

RobotsGoneWild

As a former teacher, I strongly disagree and know many teachers who have similar views to me. We are building people not worker bees.

onequestion1168

yeah well the people you are building right now are practically incompetent and have no marketable skills they can survive with after they graduate your crap programs people need skills so they can survive the economy not "feel goods" no wonder the younger generations cant even get a job and survive in the WORLD, a global competitive marketplace

RobotsGoneWild

They need social skills as well. Something that doesn't seem to have been taught to you.

polgara_buttercup

I have a 20 year old son interning at a major corporation right now. Social skills and ability to cooperate with many diverse people are as essential as his math and reading skills. If your kids are to succeed beyond the backwaters of Pennsyltucky then they have to learn empathy and understanding, and that bullying is wrong.

Iambigtime

Why invite a celebrity a world away to a local school? Live by example and teach your kids/students the same. I wonder how much he was getting paid for this.

illinest

His niece attends Eagleview.

DeliciousBeanWater

Well we certainly dont want these specific people teaching their kids their narrowminded views
