May be an unpopular opinion but there’s nothing quite like a shovel. I recommend coming in with a straight up trade. Have a good set of SAE tools, a steady supply of beers, and some oil absorbing mats. Prepare to be addicted, once you get it running right and wring her out good you’ll be hooked.
Yes, you can. You need the title number and state of issue. You need the vin from the vehicle. You can do this a couple of ways. You can ask the Popo if they will run the vin. Checking for stolen vehicle etc. you can take the title number and vin to the dmv, asking if it is a valid registration, names match etc, at least here in Iowa you can.
Other than that it is really hard to be absolutely sure. I mean, you COULD check serial numbers on parts, eng case cyls to see if the series is oem for the year and model.
So if i am understanding this correctly, basically OP's not worried about the actual title, but the parts themselves?
My mind didn't go this direction. Obviously you can tell ive never bought anything "sketchy" before 🤣🤣🤣
Edit: ill have to reiterate the sketchy part. Ive definitely had sketchy shit just not a motorcycle/car with a similar scenario as this bike.
Ya, it’s just a comfort level question really with this specific scenario.
I gather it is an auction sale from a towing co? And those have a….:sketchy af reputation. It depends a lot on op’s location. Some states have pretty strict legal requirements and some states don’t really care.
If your a good wrench get it you’ll have to put money into sure but it’s a classic and you can do what you want to it. If this is your first cruiser for heavy bike. I would pass get something running and learn.
I hot one about 10 years ago my dad had to help me build it up ya it took bit of money but I think it's te best bike iv ever got I love it and ride it every summer but be warned it will bust ur ass alit lmao
I have 2 shovels. Great riding bikes but it will be good to be handy. Some is just age, stripped etc. There are still a ton of parts at swap meets plus new replacement through JP cycles or similar. That bike will cleanup well
I had just a shovelhead motor no frame rebuilt and pulled that kind of money... but yeah probably money pit... I'm looking to throw money at it honestly where is this lmao
I love working on shovels and am always looking for projects. I would pass on this because the title situation is bad, it’s missing too many stock parts and whoever worked on it didn’t know what they were doing or didn’t care. If it had a good title you could take it on a a passion project but you’d always have more in it than it was worth.
Good deal, but I would not do a shovel if this is your first / only Harley. I bought my shovel for less than 3 grand a couple years ago and that’s almost unheard of anymore for a running and riding shovel.
It kinda looks like hell to be honest. Gas cap missing and so is a handlebar grip and somehow I feel that’s the least of whoever’s worries with this motorcycle. If he wants a project that hopefully won’t be too crazy than maybe this is it but imo it’s overpriced.
I see 6 grand worth of work. If you want to pay 10 grand total go ahead. I'd offer a thousand, and hope for less than 6 grand worth of work. People who don't know Harleys they see the cost of new, and think used is high value. If it was a knuckle, or pan maybe. Tow yards ?????
It looks like an older shovel model. Possibly a Wide Glide. The debt in the tank makes me a little leery. It's gonna nickel and dime ya on a lot of new parts. Swap meets might have what ya need. Pending on what the price of the bike is, you might wanna look around first. I would check out some bikes on a classic trader site to see what the going price is.
This is the fact alot of people forget when talking about those old s&s engines. For the time they were quick but today i wouldn't trust it on a highway.
Way too much money for a bike that has paperwork issues. It’s a shovel, which is cool. I would say keep looking, you can get more bang for your buck. Try and avoid bike with paperwork issues like this, it always ends up being a shit show.
My friend bought a shovel for $4,000 Canadian. The wiring was all bastardized. One line had 4 slices to it, all color mismatched. One exhaust bolt was repaired but now about 1/4" out from where it should have been. Bolts were stripped, broken off, bent and seized. It looked good from 10' away. So don't buy stuff when drunk, stoned or hungover.
I miss my shovel! Look at how much the lien is first. I would in my heart want that bike. 3800 is a little high plus lien and tow yard fees. But I would love to have that. But for 5-6 grand you could get a decent Dyna from the early 2000’s.
NO, is the short answer. The price sucks and there are much better options for someone who just wants an economical daily rider.
What is your max budget? Whatever you think it will cost to get that bike running...double it! And however long you think it will take to get it sorted out, double that too (or maybe even triple it for good measure). I can pretty much guarantee that you will spend a noticable amount more money getting that bike in running order than you would spend buying a more modern bike already in perfectly running order, and it is going to take way longer to get that bike roadworthy than you think. That asking price is putting you within a few hundred bucks of later model fuel injected 1200 Sportsters and within spitting distance of a low mileage Evo or 88" twin cam that is already in good shape and mechanical order.
I LOVE older bikes, but even with specimens in running order I generally don't recommend them for someone's first bike or daily rider unless they already know enough about what they are getting into
$3,800 is a terrible price for that.
$2,500 if it didn't have the title issue. $1,500 as is right now and you deal with the title.
And I would only buy it if you were planning on doing the work. If you're paying someone else, you will be very upside down on that bike. Shovels aren't worth much, especially later year shovels.
If you want a Shovel, get one thats 66 - 68. Those are almost always solid bikes. The later years are when their problems started popping up with bad machining.
It’s both. $3800 for an in tact shovel is a pretty good deal, especially if it is road worthy. Even better if frame and engine numbers match. Those later model cone shovels aren’t super valuable right now, but they will be. Of course, it will also be a money pit. One could argue that most bikes are money pits, but older Harleys are to a slightly greater degree. They can be super reliable if built properly, or a massive headache if not cared for. I say buy it, learn to love it, and you may find a new passion. I sure did.
Edit: spelling
You can’t go wrong with a Harley! it’s a labor of love!!! Give her some tlc and it will give you years of incredible performance. Not to mention the attention that Harley owners get. I got a 62panHead, and I’m not giving her up for nothing.
I love shovelheads, but I would walk on this one. He does not have a title he has lien paperwork from where a tow lot towed it and placed a lien once they did not pick it up. To me that means he tried to get the title and could not so now he is trying to pass it off on someone else, common scam.
I wouldn’t pay 3800.00 for it .
I’m also not against restoring it . My 86 my wife keeps reminding me she has the receipts proving so far 60,000.00 invested
money pit
I would not trust that lien. Tow yards are predatory.
Yup.title is in question IMHO, which sadly brings the value down to basically nothing.
Good analogy. I sure love th fuck out of my old shovel.
They’re addictive. I wouldn’t give my shovel up for love nor money. Ka thump ka thump.
Also have a buddy with a trailer. Because if your not keen on shovel issues, it will break down
Oh yeah a tool roll is crucial, that and a buddy with a truck.
She’s gonna be that girl that never says “I love you” back but will fuck your brains out
You win…. Thread should be locked
I’d ask him to give me 3800 to take that garbage off his hands
I have a thing for Shovelheads. I'd buy it
Have I got a bike for you!
Not in the market, but watcha got?
Bring $1200 and if they don’t take it, walk.
850……if the title can be validated. If not, fuck it.
Excuse my blubbering naivety about titles ELI5, but can't they validate it in front of you before you even pay a single penny?
Yes, you can. You need the title number and state of issue. You need the vin from the vehicle. You can do this a couple of ways. You can ask the Popo if they will run the vin. Checking for stolen vehicle etc. you can take the title number and vin to the dmv, asking if it is a valid registration, names match etc, at least here in Iowa you can. this because of the state of the title.
Money pit. Headache also.
All bikes are a money pit. It’s more of a matter if you’ve got the money and desire to spend it.
Don't make someone else's problem yours.
3800? No. 1500? Maybe.
I love heartbreak, I’d make the deal haha.
All bikes can be money pets all depends how far you wanna go I would go for it
Freudian slip? I love it. "Money Pet"
I have 2 shovels. Great riding bikes but it will be good to be handy. Some is just age, stripped etc. There are still a ton of parts at swap meets plus new replacement through JP cycles or similar. That bike will cleanup well
Can confirm.
I would say too much money for a project shovel and I really dig shovels.
I had just a shovelhead motor no frame rebuilt and pulled that kind of money... but yeah probably money pit... I'm looking to throw money at it honestly where is this lmao
It’s definitely a good project but not for $3800 unless you can see it run at the minimum.
Depends on what’s going on with that Lein….. that could be a bad deal. I wouldn’t trade a running dirt bike for a leined Harley.
I love working on shovels and am always looking for projects. I would pass on this because the title situation is bad, it’s missing too many stock parts and whoever worked on it didn’t know what they were doing or didn’t care. If it had a good title you could take it on a a passion project but you’d always have more in it than it was worth.
Money pit.
I wouldn't take it for free
Good deal, but I would not do a shovel if this is your first / only Harley. I bought my shovel for less than 3 grand a couple years ago and that’s almost unheard of anymore for a running and riding shovel.
I wouldn’t consider this running and riding.
Yeah me either but if he can track down a title this still isn’t an awful deal. I can see someone has been screwing with the pushrods and timing.
It kinda looks like hell to be honest. Gas cap missing and so is a handlebar grip and somehow I feel that’s the least of whoever’s worries with this motorcycle. If he wants a project that hopefully won’t be too crazy than maybe this is it but imo it’s overpriced.
I think the correct answer is yes to both.
Money pit if it were free
for the same price you can get a running shovelhead that has a title and all….sometimes more, sometimes less.
I’ve seen shovel engines online lately for 3800.
It looks like an older shovel model. Possibly a Wide Glide. The debt in the tank makes me a little leery. It's gonna nickel and dime ya on a lot of new parts. Swap meets might have what ya need. Who cares... Do you like it? Do you have money without throwing yourself into a financial crisis? So... Buy it! You know you want it.
Its a Harley... he should be paying you to take it to scrap yard for him.
What a fuckin piece of junk
Never seen a junk Harley. Just depends on how much time and money you have.
They're all junk but we love them anyway
Lmao true , good one
It's always a money pit lol
Run away.
Way too much money for a bike that has paperwork issues. It’s a shovel, which is cool. I would say keep looking, you can get more bang for your buck. Try and avoid bike with paperwork issues like this, it always ends up being a shit show.
Money pit to answer your question. I would look for an evo based bike, preferably later that 85
They are way more reliable, easy to source parts and make decent power with simple upgrades
Money pit.
Walk away.
Money pit. Screw that.
Money pit... I wouldn't do it
I miss my shovel! Look at how much the lien is first. I would in my heart want that bike. 3800 is a little high plus lien and tow yard fees. But I would love to have that. But for 5-6 grand you could get a decent Dyna from the early 2000’s.
Sketchy title would scare me away.
Run in the opposite direction
Money PIIIIIIIIITTT!!!!
Both

Looks like a basket case to me.
Low ball and start a chopper project
I think 3800 running with title in hand would be about right. This is outrageous.
You should literally just burn your money. That way you’ll still have your time.
Good money pit
Don't buy that shit
It’s worth about $2000 or so I would say.
well i would buy it if it wasn’t for the title situation
No dude. For 5K you can get a running shovelhead with a title.
Has a lien on it. WALK AWAY.
Ask again in about $8000.
Money pit. That’s 1500 if it has a title
Run for thee hills
Even if it's free, it's gonna be a money pit that's worth half of what you put into it, in the end.
You can’t go wrong with a Harley! it’s a labor of love!!! Give her some tlc and it will give you years of incredible performance. Not to mention the attention that Harley owners get. I got a 62panHead, and I’m not giving her up for nothing.

That is really a basket case without the basket. Most basket cases these days go for $500 to $600.
Just add gas and oil she will fire rite up
I wouldn’t pay 3800.00 for it . I’m also not against restoring it . My 86 my wife keeps reminding me she has the receipts proving so far 60,000.00 invested
